Neat rows of gardening tables were organized so that they encircled a main podium, little more than a raised mound of soil that the already tall form of Professor Madrona stood upon. The atmosphere of the lab was muggy, with ample moisture to maintain the plants within, and much warmer than the chilly desert outside.

The first day of class was always a little unnerving, particularly with an instructor as uncanny as the neti. She waited, un-moving and statuesque in the center of the greenhouse, as students gathered and found their seats. The tables had roughly five seats around each of them, though students formed groups smaller or larger than that based on social preferences and with no additional feedback from their seemingly inanimate professor.

Despite her lack of motion, it seemed as if those large strange blue-green eyes followed each of them wherever they went. And indeed, they were being watched no matter where they might stray within the greenhouse, though perhaps not by the source they immediately suspected and instead by watchers more nefarious and tiny. As their various timepieces struck Korriban noon, the neti suddenly animated.

"Welcome to my class, students. All of you are here to learn more about galactic botany- whether to serve as scientists, assassins with a cunning appreciation for poisons, or perhaps just to round out your other skills."

She swayed, sweeping her eyes across the gathered acolytes and turning in an almost unnatural looking 360 degree bend of her long neck. The smile that crept across her features did not reach her eyes, long fingered hands gestured to the tables and their contents.

"Laid before you are two varieties of plants. Your datapads have been sent the relevant field-guide. For your first class, you must work together to identify the two different plants before you. After doing so, you must carefully extract the venom and the acid from these distinct specimen respectively. You will be graded on identification, extraction, and preservation of components. The use of alchemy is strongly encouraged with one of these two species, so be sure to read carefully. Your groups may be no larger than six students, as I want all of you to get some hands on practice."

The woman un-wound herself for the bizarre twist she'd undergone in observing them all. A'Mia clasped her hands behind her back and looked at them all expectantly.

"Proceed! I am available for questions, of course."

Lysander’s gaze followed the towering figure of A’Mia as she addressed the class; there was a touch of disdain flickering in his emerald orbs.
The Neti was always easy to spot, her presence akin to a giant brooding tree. Without the familiar faces of Captain Haro Aven Haro Aven and Lieutenant Naamino Zuukamano Naamino Zuukamano , he almost felt out of place here at the Kor'ethyr Academy, just as he had back at the Jedi enclaves on Coruscant and Naboo.

Wiping a bead of sweat from his brow, the acolyte could feel the mugginess of the greenhouse clinging to him like a shadow; immaculate blonde hair already plastered to his forehead. The knuckles on both of the boy's hands bore fresh scrapes, signs of the morning sparring session. A bruise under his left eye would add yet another mark from training— the same one permanently scarred by Naamino's horn. Despite his natural inclination toward grappling, he'd been putting more effort lately into improving his stand up game, and today was a certainly a humbling reminder of the long journey ahead.

He was dressed simply in a black tunic and leggings, along with matching boots; the vibrant robes of Derriphan had been left behind in his dorm. His gaze drifted to his roommate, Varin, making a mental note to bridge the gap between them besides just being acquaintances. Surely, someone that hadn’t tried to murder him in his sleep couldn’t be so bad.

Her final words were met with a raised brow from the boy. A trace of tension still simmered beneath the serene facade as his mind carried the memories of her assault on his sister back on Woostri. With that came the moment he hurled dark energy at one of her Sithspawns. Part of him still wondered if she ever knew it was him.

With the datapad in his grasp, though making no attempt to start the task at hand, he stepped away from the table, separating the distance between them. Clasping both hands behind his back, the acolyte's gaze darted up to her. "Hello, Professor A'Mia," he began, shooting a brief glance towards the other acolytes before returning his attention to the Neti. A whisper heavy with sarcasm then slipped from his lips. "You appear much improved since the detention you decided to give me.”

There was a slight tug at the corner of his mouth as he scanned the greenhouse, as if searching for something more secret, perhaps even more medicinal. "I was wondering if you had anything here to help with physical pain.. You know, something that might offer an aspiring scientist or assassin an opportunity to unwind after a long day of studying.. and perhaps recover just a bit faster."

A deliberate pause followed, allowing the words to settle. Then a note of sincerity crept into Lysander’s tone. "What say you, Professor? I’d greatly appreciate it if you could grant me this one.. favor.”

Kivah let out a yawn and languidly stretched as class began, making sure to work her jaw as her lips pulled back from her teeth. It was very relaxed and animalistic, something she'd practiced after leaving home but now did without thinking. The heat and humidity reminded her of Ran Dom Kuun where she'd grown up and she'd pretended to be lulled into a doze with an arm propping up her head while waiting for the class to begin. Now that it had, she tilted her cahir upright and looked towards the plants. Right, not quite the easy credit she'd expected. Made sense they were looking at Sith plants and not just the standard galactic angiosperms and gymnosperms. A'Mia was right though. This stuff could be important, life-saving, or taking.

With a quiet half-growl, half-groan, in the back of her throat, she took up the data pad left behind by another student as he went to talk to the teacher. Her eyes flicked over the information as she scrolled through the guide, the Droseraceae was the easy one, the mouth gave it away and the petals probably closed up around prey. She eyed it skeptically. Knowing it was a Sith plant, it probably wasn't that easy. The little berry looking bits were probably full of acid while the other one was venomous. Who even heard of a plant with acid? Why? Actually, that question answered itself with her earlier line of reasoning, food digestion, and maybe to stop prey from getting out as easily. Wait, A'Mia hadn't actually said the two things they were to extract weren't from the same plant.

Rolling her eyes, she checked on some of the other students around her before getting back to the guide. Every planet had so many plants, and there were so many planets. It truly was an endless field of tedium to her. She could feel a headache coming on and started thinking about what would make a quick lunch after this so she could dip out and partake of a more interesting plant she'd picked up on her last run out to Cantonica. At least her old CSA contacts were still talking to her and willing to take her creds.

Varin woke up extremely early that morning. It was only a few days earlier that he went through a memory reading with his master Revna Revna , in hopes to remember parts of his past. Everything was now fresh in his mind, well almost everything. He can only assume some parts were locked tight in his head or she might be withholding information. He can never truly be certain.

Having only a few hours of sleep Varin made his way out of bed getting dressed. His roomate Lysander had returned back to campus grounds, but Varin had been mainly a shut in since he had returned, not leaving much in terms of socializing. He would hope to fix that soon.

He left his dorm room and made his way around campus grounds for a while until more students started showing up. He knew classes would start soon and this was something he sort of looked forward to. He wanted a distraction, NEEDED a distraction. As he made his way around the grounds he noticed two students were deep in a conversation, not aware of what was happening around them. He took this opportunity to quickly snatch a datapad off of one of their persons luckily without being noticed. Stealing datapads, not really something he wanted to resort to but here we are anyways.

He traveled through the academy before he saw a group of students entering a classroom, perfect timing to sneak in the group and hopefully snatch a free lesson from something more interesting than fuel analytics. As luck, or lack thereof would have it, his roomate was in this same class as well. Lysander glanced over at him and Varin tried to look as nonchalant as possible.

The class was headed into a greenhouse, it was hot which was something he was very accustomed to, but it was also very wet which was something he was not accustomed to.

The plant-like professor sprung to life giving out greetings and instruction to which Varin listened to and then realised he surely was unlucky. Of course the class he tries to sneak into has a class activity going on. Attention he did not want drawn to him, but it was too late to turn back now.

He takes his seat closer to a back corner of the room and begins messing with the datapad. Unfortunately he did not take time to study the datapad and had no idea how to use it. So for the most part he sat there randomly pressing buttons trying to look busy. That is until he looked at one of the flowers, it took his attention away from everything and the room felt as if it was blanketed in silence. The flower reminded him of his mother's and sister's garden. The shape, the colors, even the smell he would assume was similar. It was then that he noticed he had pulled out his white crystal and began to rub his thumb over it in slow patterns. His body's way of trying to come back to reality.

Adean's nose twitched in annoyance as the mugginess of the greenhouse set in on her skin. She could practically feel the tips of her hair begin to curl with the humidity, the sleeves of her tunic clinging. If not for the grade and, more importantly, the fear of what would happen should she fail a class, she would've contemplated skipping entirely.

No, that was a lie. The apparent interest Madrona A’Mia Madrona A’Mia had taken in her, even elevating her to house Derriphan after an impromptu test, practically insured that no matter how much she didn't want to be here, she was locked in. She couldn't risk the Neti's interest turning to disappointment. Or worse, suspicion.

A brief yet meticulous glance was cast over the other acolytes as the class began to fill out. Kivah Kivah was a familiar face - not yet an ally though one could argue they shared a bond in ink. The familiarity was nevertheless a boon in a room of unknowns. Perhaps she'd make a point to speak to the Cathar, if only to further solidify her cover while within the Neti's presence.

A lab partner wouldn't hurt, either, she noted as she took in the two specimens. Similar to each other in shape and coloration yet individual in their own rights, there was a very real chance she could power through the course work and theory of the lab if given enough time. The practical part, especially the alchemy...now that would present an issue.

Attention snapped by the movement of Lysander von Ascania Lysander von Ascania approaching their instructor, she took the movement as an invitation to look beyond her own seat. Green eyes slid over her fellow acolytes, partially looking for others in the market for lab partners (and looking remotely competent), while also keeping a keen eye on what work they'd already done, trying to pick up on any edges she could early on.

Leshanna was among the first group of students to enter the greenhouse of her Sponsor, Professor A’Mia, quickly finding a spot amongst the front row of tables near the podium where the Neti stood in stillness and silence, awaiting the rest of the students to gather around. The young acolyte was curious to what the class would be covering today; Xeno-Botany 101 was a fairly new class added to her schedule, something that was added in once she came under the ownership and guidance of A’Mia - not that it truly bothered the young Acolyte; she rather enjoyed her time spent in the gardens and greenhouses with her Sponsor.

The girl watched as others filtered into the hot and humid structure; among the faces she recognized Lysander and, to her surprise, the new boy she’d met only recently - Varin. Other faces she only recognized in passing from other classes, but didn’t really have regular interaction with.

When the time struck high noon, the botanical Professor came to life and welcomed the students to her class, and explained that they were there to learn botany, for one reason or another. A’Mia contorted herself in an almost unnatural and unsettling way, and smiled upon the students as she continued, explaining the nature of the two very different plants laid out before them all on the tables, and that the field guide for each had been sent to their datapads. She informed them all that they would be required to work together in groups to identify the plants, then figure out the best way to extract and preserve whatever components they needed from the plants. They would be graded based on different points, and A’Mia hinted that alchemy would need to be used for one of the specimens.

Once the instructions were handed out, the Neti released the students to form their respective groups, and that she was available for any questions.

Leshanna glanced around to see if anyone might be available to group up, and noticed the familiar face of the Cathar, Kivah, nearby before her attention was drawn to Lysander who had stepped away from the table and was speaking to her Mistress. She’d heard that he, Naamino, and Haro had all received detention together - overseen by Professor A’Mia of all individuals - and so she wasn’t surprised to hear his remarks in regards to that. The girl couldn’t help being nosy, so she eavesdropped on his conversation and his next inquiry made the girl’s eyebrows lift with surprise at his boldness.

Is he for real, right now?! Lesh thought to herself as she watched the interaction a bit longer, trying to see how Professor A’Mia would respond - before she tried to busy herself with the task at hand by pulling out her datapad to look over the field guide that had been sent to her. A brief glance over them both confirmed to her that, yes, she was definitely going to need partners to help with this activity.

Tearing her gaze away from Lysander and A’Mia, Leshanna looked back towards the other students gathered, letting her eyes roam.

“...Anyone need an extra partner in their group?

FqMKEmo.png

Blue-green pupil-less eyes narrowed slightly at the approach of someone already proving himself to be a troublesome student, even amongst Sith. A'Mia regarded the tall blonde, though she still had nearly two feet in height on him, and his daring gave her paused.

"Lysander," she acknowledged slowly.

"An interesting bid for support— unfortunately you'll need to show me proof of concept. Demonstrate first that you might have the makings of a scientist, scholar, or something of the like, that will work hard enough to need a boost after a job well done."

Her voice had been uncharacteristically low and quiet, but as she completed the response it rose to a brighter tone which carried further.

"Unless of course you're feeling so unwell that you need to return to the tank?"

It was a jab and veiled threat all in one, but there had been the potential of boon thrown in with response to his question. He'd first need to impress the Sith Shadow.

This occurred all while A'Mia's newest Sithspawn watched over the other students from discreet vantage points planted in nearby garden beds and tucked between rows of potted flowers on shelves. Adean Castor Adean Castor “Tavis Ordel" was immediately honed in on as a target of interest— the baby-blue daisy nearest where she sat narrowed its petals so as to be discreet and less visible in turn as it kept tabs on her.

Kivah Kivah was a student of note primarily because she was largely unknown to A'Mia, other than watching her very nearly win the first race of the school year. Nearby, the professor's special interest sat— she'd arrived early and was not so subtly listening in to A'Mia be cajoled by Lysander as she prepared for the assignment. Leshanna Leshanna was quick and smart, but the Lord Seer had chosen her because of a latent ability she'd sensed with her. Would the Sight make itself known to her here during this project, or would she need to be pushed much harder to unlock that particular power?

Then there was a new face… a quiet and somewhat shifty boy she didn't recognize. Her eyes told her he was touched by pain and ash— but little else was available to her without additional inspection. As she finished up with the young nobleman, A'Mia spoke directly to the mind of Varin Mortifer Varin Mortifer and issued a soft command.

Group up with some of the others here at the front, you needn't be shy and she punctuated the telepathy communication with a gesture, indicating that he should sit with some of the others she was subtly keeping a closer eye on. To Lysander von Ascania Lysander von Ascania the hand wave might also be taken as dismissal to return to his task.

A'Mia did all this while remaining rooted in place. Her long torso twisted and turned, she sometimes swayed as if in a breeze, but never once did her robed lower half moved from the mound-like speaking platform.

When the response began with his name, he knew disappointment was certain to follow; instinctively, the boy’s eyes were prepared to roll to the back of his head. Still, he stood rooted for a moment longer than necessary, feeling the undercurrent of annoyance simmering from her dismissive gesture.

Gaze narrowing, Lysander inhaled a deep breath and closed his eyes for several seconds. The next time they opened, he glanced up at A'Mia one last time. “Of course, Professor. As always, I'll put forth my best effort.. I wouldn't dare to ever let down the noble House Derriphan," he said, purposefully drawing out the last two words in a clear and obvious mocking tone.

The acolyte turned on his heel with a touch of natural elegance, wasting no time gravitating toward the table in the back corner where Varin was sitting. It seemed like a safe, possibly even strategic choice, in case his focus slipped. Sliding into a seat opposite from him, a subtle nod was then offered. "Hello."

Bringing the datapad before him, it flared to life with a single tap, the glow illuminating his radiant visage. A quirk tugged at the corner of the acolyte's mouth as he opened the camera app to snap a picture of the two plant species. From there, he attached it to a message, one ready to be crafted through the HoloNet for Sibylla Abrantes Sibylla Abrantes .

Hi Sib. I’m learning how to poison people today and somehow you were the first person I thought of.

The message was brief compared to their usual ones, yet it felt fitting for the moment. After hitting the send button and gathering his focus, his attention returned to Varin. The blonde shot him a curious look, leaning slightly across the table to press his datapad's power button. Although he noticed the boy was fixated on something else now, the decision was made to not pry any further.

Pulling up the field guide, Lysander skimmed some of the data in an attempt to identify the plants before him. During the process, his lips parted. “Need any help with the assignment?" A beat later, he continued in a more secretive tone. "The faster we finish this, the sooner we can move on with our day. If the Force wills it, I may just be able to get something out of the Professor’s secret stash.. I suppose I could even share it with you since we’re roommates."

Kivah drummed the fingers of one hand on the table as she looked around the room. So far everybody was keeping to themselves, which didn't fit with the 'work together' part of the task. Not that teamwork was a place the Sith traditionally excelled in, hard to get over several millennia of traditional backstabbing, even the healthy competition of the academy discouraged it. Not that that had stopped a few of them from forming cross-house lines to form a loose sort of friendship. Really a lot of Derraphims, she and Gavin Vel Gavin Vel were the few Ghouls.

Spotting one of those friends, or acquaintances now, she grabbed her stuff and moved through the rows of tables to where Adean Castor Adean Castor was and dumping her bag and 'pad on the table next to the other set of plants. "Ohm eow." She grunted out, Cathar for [Hello you], as she dropped heavily into the seat next to her. "Been awhile, thought we could team up, share what we've got." Taking up the stylus for her borrowed data pad, Kivah pointed to the rounded nodules along the base of the toothy cabbage. "I figure we’ve got digestive acid in here and venom in the teeth. Would be just like the teachers to pull a fast one like that." Even so, she was careful not to touch either plant directly. She did however poke at the teeth with her stylus to watch the leaves try to close up as she pulled her hand back.

"...Anyone need an extra partner in their group?" The call came out over the heads of their classmates and, after looking towards Adean, Kivah shrugged and twisted back to look at Leshanna Leshanna .
"Sure, come one over." Kivah had seen the girl around a few times, but the only notable incident had been the race back when they were all new students. Then, the human had stolen first place out from under her, something Kivah hadn't appreciated. She'd appreciated the airs the girl had put on after crying about killing someone and puking on the track even less, but was willing to give her another chance if she'd grown any. Otherwise well, the Sith had been weeding out weakness for millennia.

The voice stunned Varin, snapping him out of his stupor, he freezes for a moment trying to process what had just happened. Adding another voice to the list of other voices in his head in his current state is a bit of a tasking matter. As he was piecing it all together a student sat just across from him at the table. Speak of the devil, it was Lysander and he definitely seemed to care about his own looks….quite a lot Varin would assume, maybe a little too much. He pulled up his datapad effortlessly navigating its functions before finally speaking after giving a nod.

“Hello”

Lysander offered his help on the assignment, speaking in a normal tone before dropping to a quieter one to speak of a deal. It would seem he really wants to get into this stash of A’mia’s, as to what he wants from it or why Varin could not tell. Looking him up and down he would notice wear and tear on Lysander’s knuckles, bruising on the left eye and what looks to be a mark from a previous engagement. Varin shoots him a puzzled look before speaking.

“Pleasure to finally meet you, I thought I heard some extra movement in the room. Been training hard?” Varin slowly puts the crystal back in his shirt.

He attempts to bypass the datapad password but fails getting a temporary lockout. He growls slightly to himself. “This is why I prefer pen and paper.” He places the datapad on the table and slides it away. The screen may not be salvageable.

“How hard could it be to extract some acid and poison from plants?” He grabs the stylus from the spent datapad and gently pokes the toothy plant. “I guess now's the time I should tell you I’m not very good at desk work." He gently rolls the stylus under one of the teeth. "What do you suggest?”

A mixture of relief and concern tugged at Adean as she was joined by Kivah - relief at being paired with a familiar face, concern at being noticed to begin with. It seemed she'd have a harder time slipping by unnoticed than on Jutrand. But one also had to wonder if that was actually a bad thing. She could use the connections.

She could only assume the unfamiliar phrase was a greeting, one she didn't try repeating. "It has, yes. Not since after the dance, I believe?" That was as far as Adean dared to go when referencing the unsanctioned duel they had both been present for. The recording of the bout was safely encrypted and tucked away among other non-incriminating files. A piece of leverage for a rainy day. But beyond that recording, Adean very much pretended that event didn't exist.

"Yes, fast-acting acid and venom at that, given the plant's size. That, or it feeds quite infrequently." Or both. It could easily be a combination of the theories or something else entirely. "The other plant, I'm not so sure about. These almost look like spores," she gestured to the center of the pastel plant, careful not to get too close. "Though that wouldn't fall in line with acid, I don't think...Let me see if I can find a planet of origin for these."

The call for partners saw her head lift from her datapad, unintentionally catching Kivah's gaze. A third partner certainly couldn't hurt. All the better to disguise any of her own shortcomings, if alchemy really would be necessary. Tavis moved her bag to the back of her chair to make room for the newcomer. "What have you observed so far, uhhh?" Her words drifted off, uncertain of the acolyte's name.

Lesh’s call for partners seemed to catch Kivah’s attention, and the older student turned around and told Leshanna to come and join her and another girl whom Leshanna wasn’t familiar with. Datapad in hand, she stepped up to the table and took her seat opposite to the other gal and beside Kivah.

Appreciate it.” Lesh said to the other two, before she turned her eyes back towards the flowers, listening in to the unnamed gal as she seemed to carry on whatever discussion she’d been having with Kivah before Lesh arrived. The girl pursed her lips as she got smidge closer to the lighter blue hued plant, her eyes narrowed in thought before she turned her attention to the more predatory looking plant with teeth in the center of it.

The unnamed acolyte then asked Leshanna what her observations might be.

Oh! Umm. Hmm, well I suspect the toothy planet is the venomous one; it definitely appears like a predatory plant of some sort. Or maybe…it is a defense mechanism; the teeth point upwards instead of inwards…so if you stuck your hand on it or stepped on it…you’d be pierced by the teeth and thus envenomated.

She turned her attention to the more pale plant. “As for this one…I suspect this one is the acidic one. The stalk is rather…thick, chunky. Reminds me of a cactus, kind of. I wonder if the fleshy bits are acidic. I think maybe the center piece is where the pollen is; these plants have to germinate somehow and pollen is usually the best method. Just…simple observations without knowing too much about either plant.

Leshanna sat back up and offered a small smile to the girl she didn’t know. “My name is Leshanna, by the way. Just Lesh is fine though. I know Kivah here, but I’m not familiar with who you are. What’s your name?

An unnerving stillness fell back over the Professor as Lysander turned away to find a seat beside the odd boy he apparently knew. The total lack of movement she could embody was unlike anything most lifeforms were capable of, it was almost avian but more dramatic still because only her eyes moved. A'Mia merely watched and listened for a while, through many eyes and "ears" as she tested her newest creations in this rather closed environment. She made no sign of being bothered by her student's sass.

Students rearranged a bit, regrouped. Notably though, Varin Mortifer Varin Mortifer was either obstinately ignoring orders or he'd perhaps been distracted by the arrival of his blonde peer. A'Mia wasn't one to have a temper and erred on the side of gathering more information before acting, so she shifted her true eyes to that pair. Varin's stylus was promptly snapped at when the boy poked a fanged plant, and if he didn't hold tight then the botanical would swallow the offending item.

Meanwhile, Kivah Kivah , Adean Castor Adean Castor and Leshanna Leshanna got right to work with one another. A'Mia overheard some good theories and made note to provide feedback to her young ward, perhaps even a note of praise about her initial instincts. The woman also sensed the general level of cunning at the table and was reassured that the clever trio gathered there weren't likely to need much intervention. Immediately in contrast to that, a terrified reedy scream rose from the throat of an unfortunate first year that foolishly poked their light blue plant right in the center blossom while their face was very near the thing. One of A'Mia's long limbs was already snaking around the wailing student as she calmly instructed.

"A reminder to you all that, in addition to asking questions, workshop or lab courses at Kor'ethyr encourage you to make use of the whole classroom. You can see, well all but one of you now, can see there are cabinets lining some of the walls of this greenhouse. They contain tools and safety equipment, in case you haven't brought your own."

She said all this while casually dunking the unfortunate acolyte into a chemical bath. Their pained hollers turned briefly into distressed bubbling, then the neti lifted them back out and sat them down soggily on a bench that seemed placed there specifically for this purpose.

"You, put a few drops of this into their eyes, then get back to your assignment. Let your peer's experience teach you a thing or two," she instructed with her gaze still on the pair of boys seated at the back of the classroom, all while she pressed a vial into the shaking hands of the injured student's lab partner.

"You've all purposefully been provided with incomplete information about these plants because that is the nature of field work at times. You need to be able to collect samples safely from species you may or may not know about."

She then waved a hand as if to say "carry on" and continued to observe.

Plant Details
(Some available on student datapads // some available through observation)

Plant #1
Name: ???
Planet of Origin:
E'ronoh
syMM3uB.jpeg

  • Rattles threateningly when approached or touched
  • The stalks appear armored, and upon closer inspection it is revealed they are covered in detritus (like a botanical version of a decorator crab)
  • There are small cracks in the "armor" formed by the plant, but they'd require finesse to get through to the vulnerable stalk beneath
  • Your classmate was sprayed in the face with fast acting acid when they poked the center flower

Plant #2
Name: Brassia Oleracea Brochinnia
(Hunter Cabbage)
Planet of Origin: ???

RnTRzk8.jpeg

  • Will snap at/ bite/ attempt to swallow whatever moves near enough to be considered prey
  • This botanical is noted as "venomous" and indeed, toxic looking liquid drips from fangs as it moves to bite
  • Little nodes surround the base of these plants, and the leaves appear to have a wide range of motion
  • After one of these plants snaps at your peer's stylus it's base seems to expand a bit and the petals close protectively around the toothy center

A subtle nod was given to his roommate. Lysander felt relaxed. "Yeah, it's been mostly that and getting lost in holotexts as of late," he admitted. He couldn't help but smirk at the locked datapad before his gaze drifted to the toothy plant nearby. The aggressive response summoned a raised brow, registering it as a threat. "Hm. Maybe you could focus on distracting it while I work on getting that venom from our bitey friend. Team effort.. right?"

Not even a second later, his own device would vibrate, a notification from Sibylla Abrantes Sibylla Abrantes flashing on the screen; his eyes narrowed in amusement while reading, and a chuckle threatened to escape the boy's lips, but he quickly suppressed it. Obviously, the Neti would be disapproving of such a sound.

The acolyte's fingers glided across the screen with grace.

Oh, ok. So, you’re going straight for the jugular already?

A student's scream cut through his thoughts, the sound echoing across the greenhouse. He turned just in time to see Professor A'Mia nonchalantly placing the figure into a bath of chemicals. The worst part, though, was that her gazed remained locked onto him and Varin during the process.

Staying true to himself and deciding to chance it, he continued tapping away. Besides, what if this ended up being the last HoloNet message he ever got to send?

So, something just went down during lab and the tree lady keeps giving our table the death stare. Honestly, it's all your fault too. You're such a distraction sometimes. It was obviously a compliment; I just wanted an excuse to message you. Bye.

Having just forfeited this round of verbal sparring, he then noticed the toothy organism becoming defensive; its petals closed around the center like a fortress. "That plant is more sus than the girls here on campus," he mused aloud to Varin in a lowered tone.

Feeling decisive, the blonde suddenly leapt up from his seat and strode toward one of the walls lined with cabinets. The noise made while digging through them was very much calculated; he wanted the Professor to witness how eager he was for the assignment. An array of supplies was gathered: gloves, goggles, a clamp, one syringe, and even a scalpel.

Returning to the table, he laid everything out as if they were preparing to dominate Woostri for a second time. "Maybe we can extract the venom. What do you think? One of us can jab it in the neck with the needle." Just after, he flashed the scalpel with a mischievous grin. His voice lowered even more, near a whisper. “Sith love killing things. People, plants.. planets.. everything. And Professor never said we couldn't just finish it off first. The venom glands would be connected to the fangs, so it can’t be too difficult to locate. What do you think? Should I do it?"

Halfway across the galaxy, a half muffled snort escaped Sibylla’s twitching pursed lips before a quick tap of keys sent the following back.

Lysander von Ascania Lysander von Ascania ’s data pad gave a bold vibration under the aggressive foliage scrutiny of the Sith Neti, Madrona A’Mia Madrona A’Mia .

Oh, so now I'm a distraction and an excuse? Be careful, Lysander. That sounds suspiciously like admiration in disguise -- Though I suspect you enjoy being caught just as much as you enjoy blaming me for it.

Nonetheless, if your tree professor is glaring, I suggest perfect posture and immediate repentance.

Her ear flicked in annoyance as someone's communicator buzzed to announce a message. It'd gone off a few times already and she was surprised it was allowed. Other classes could be pretty strict about distractions like that. At least Adean was giving some good insights and Leshanna wasn't dragging up ancient history. She could appreciate that, the now was more important than a race that no longer mattered. "Yeah, wouldn't want to step on it," she agreed with the girl's observation and turned her attention to the second plant as Lesh explained why she thought it was acidic.

Kivah was opening her mouth to give proper introductions when her tail bristling gave her pause right as someone let out an agonized scream from across the room. "Oh shoot, that one does shoot acid. Good call Lesh." She casually complimented while watching the poor girl getting dunked by the teacher. Tail was back to normal and she had a good idea of how to extract the acid now, so she'd perked up a bit from her earlier lethargy. "Anyways," she lay a hand on Adean's shoulder, "This here is Tavis, met her when we went out to get new ink and she tagged along. And actually, that gives me an idea." Her voice trailed off as she scanned the shelf of safety equipment A'Mia had indicated before bouncing up and going to it as she saw what she wanted.

Returning with a few rubber safety gloves and one of those forcep things used to hold beakers, Kivah got right to work without explaining herself. "Give me a hair tie." She demanded in general, expecting one of them to have one. (Because really, not having one hair tie between three girls would probably spell the planet's doom that Korriban had been dodging for most of its existence.) And stretched the back of a rubber glove over a sample jar before reaching out for an offered elastic to secure it taunt. "Saw this in a biolab once, the glove acts like a skin the teeth can puncture and then we can milk some venom right into the jar. Easy. While one of you does that, I'll hold the leaves open so we can pull it back out." She didn't mention that she'd seen it on a school field trip when she was eight.

A student's scream could be audibly heard from across the classroom as Vari took note of the acidic nature of the blue flower and smirked to himself.

“Sith love killing things. People, plants.. planets.. everything. And Professor never said we couldn't just finish it off first. The venom glands would be connected to the fangs, so it can’t be too difficult to locate. What do you think? Should I do it?"

Varin let that sink in his head a bit as he gave Lysander a bit of a puzzled look. “Killing you say?” He thinks to himself for a moment. Tell him boy, an aspiring sith must always learn this.

As you wish

Varin straightens his posture as if he was training again with his father, an instinctual showing of discipline. “I believe Sith see killing as necessary. I don't believe all Sith love to kill. You look around this school and I know that just about every teacher here and most students here have killed someone. Even jedi kill people, this I know personally…” He stands and walks towards one of the cabinets and grabs a singular glass jar and lid and comes right back to the table.

“Sure killing can happen to put others in line, but a true Sith, a REAL Sith, the only things they love, the only things they crave are power, domination and conquest. To impose themselves over the weak.” He places the jar carefully in front of the acidic flower. “Certainly you could kill that plant and extract its resources just once. But to dominate its will, to force it to give you its resources, that's truly rewarding.”

He grabs the slightly cracked datapad and slowly raises his hand to the blue flower, the flower slowly bends its face into the jar as Varins eyes turn a slight orange. Holding the datapad up in front of the flower for some form of protection, and frustration of the device he then very slowly used a crush ability on the flower portion, agitating the plant coaxing it to defend itself. The plant sprays the acid in its defense and Varin places the datapad closer to it so it absorbs any stray chemicals. Smoke gently and faintly flows off his back as the datapad screen begins to melt, before long some acid is collected in the jar. He releases the creature and turns it away from them promptly capping the jar. “This may not have collected a lot of the sample but it has something.” He looks at Varin, “So what will you do, whatever you decide I will help, wouldn't want you to miss out on some medication.” The datapad now heavily damaged lies on the table.

A polite smile pulled across Tavis' features as she listened to the newcomer's observations, eyes drifting between Lesh, her datapad, and the plants in question before the questions were turned to her. "Oh, yes, call me Ta-"

The sudden scream saw Adean jolt out of her seat, just about ready to bolt until her eyes landed on the unfortunate acolyte. Her secondary instinct was to grab a vial and scramble to collect whatever remaining acid had landed on the table or floor. But no, a tainted sample would hardly work for the assignment at hand. Otherwise, she doubted she'd be the only acolyte who thought of the method.

Sitting back down now, far more aware and on the jumpier side of things, she nearly flinched under the weight of Kivah's hand. At the same time, she couldn't help but find the gesture grounding, if only by a fraction. An unintentional reminder that her facade still seemed to be intact. "Yes, another acolyte invited me to come along. It was a good time."

When Kivah left to gather the supplies she had in mind, Adean returned her nose to her datapad, brow furrowing in consideration. "It is strange that this plant is still functioning in this humidity, given it's from a desert and all," she mused with another gesture towards the vague direction of the light blue plant, now keeping a further distance. "If whatever Kivah's thinking doesn't pan out, we could try hydrating it even more. Or introducing some heat to it." Either method might lose them points in the preservation category, but at least they still had options ahead of them.

With an apologetic smile and a patdown to further emphasize she didn't have a hair tie on her, Tavis considered the plan laid out before them before speaking up once more. "I can hold the jar, I suppose, hold on a sec." It was her turn to scavenge the greenhouse for tools. Her metaphorical shopping list was quite simple - goggles to avoid a repeat of their fellow student, long insulated gloves to offer some protection (or buy them some time) should the acid land anywhere but the sample jar, a heat lamp if they wanted to add more heat to the cold-native subject (perhaps it grew lethargic in the heat?), a bottle stopper to extract from any puddles, and a larger beaker to serve as a larger target zone.

Kivah seemed to agree with her that she wouldn’t want to step on the toothy planet either, and seemed about ready to say something further when a painful screech ripped through the greenhouse and Leshanna’s alert eyes snapped up immediately, her entire body tensing as if ready for conflict - before she noticed her Mistress pick up an unfortunate student and dunk them into a chemical bath a moment later.

It was a reminder that PPE would be smart and wise to have on hand whenever they decided to start messing with the plants before them on the table. Almost unconsciously, Lesh took a very small step away from the plants, giving a little bit of extra space just in case.

She glanced at Kivah with a small half smile when the Cathar remarked that her observations at least had been somewhat on point - she enjoyed hearing the good call remark from the older student. They hadn’t exactly interacted on the best of terms in the past, but Leshanna was more than happy to move beyond that and just exist in the here and now. Kivah had more years and experience to her name than Lesh did, and the younger girl had respect for that.

"
This here is Tavis, met her when we went out to get new ink and she tagged along. And actually, that gives me an idea."

Kivah continued, sharing the other acolyte’s name with Lesh and a small bit about Kivah and Tavis’s history together, and Tavis spoke up then with a follow up remark, before the Cathar turned her attention to some nearby shelves, clearly in thought about something. A moment later, she stepped away to grab some items and equipment, and Tavis chose the moment to make her own observations.

"
It is strange that this plant is still functioning in this humidity, given it's from a desert and all,"

Lesh frowned in thought too at the comment, eyeing the pastel colored plant for a moment. “That is a bit strange…maybe the humidity reduces the potency of its acid? I was thinking maybe it has a sedative effect but- ” she glanced over at the injured student briefly “-maybe not, if it’s still able to project acid. Definitely a defense mechanism.

Lesh returned her thoughtful gaze to her own datapad as Kivah returned with the items and shared her thoughts with the other two girls. "
Saw this in a biolab once, the glove acts like a skin the teeth can puncture and then we can milk some venom right into the jar. Easy. While one of you does that, I'll hold the leaves open so we can pull it back out." Kivah explained further when she returned, and Lesh’s blue eyes brightened as she mentally tracked and nodded in understanding as the other girl remarked that she could hold the jar to help collect the venom from the toothy plant, before Tavis went to grab some other items that would be useful for them.

Certainly worth a try! Tavis just brought up a really good observation though - the lighter colored plant is supposedly from a desert world and here in the greenhouse the conditions are not desert like, but humid. I was just saying that maybe the humidity reduces the potency of the acid. One of these plants needs tinkering with alchemy too, if I understood Professor A’Mia correctly…though I suppose we should just focus on one plant at a time.

Lesh turned her eyes to the darker colored, cabbage looking plant - then at the information on her datapad. “This here is the Hunter Cabbage - or Brassia Oleracea Brochinnia, according to the information we were given. Hmmm…” her frown of concentration and thought returned as she looked at the Hunter Cabbage again, eyeing the small nodes around the base of the planet.

...maybe we don’t need to milk it at all from its fangs. These nodes…I wonder if these are venom sacks? If they are, we could extract venom from the sacks themselves and avoid the risk of being bitten. We could introduce a pipet and let it drip into a collection jar…” She looked back up to Kivah and Tavis. "But totally up to you two what you think is best. We can try Kivah's idea first though!"
