Maybe Zak is helping out in the nursery (Jedi day care?)
The Jedi seem volunteer and service-oriented such that an older youngling like Zak might be expected to help care for the younger ones.
Plus, it would give him exposure to the Silver Jedi. Right now, he only knows about the Republic Jedi (and we see in this thread what kind of example THEY set)
