Cautiously, his utility arm emerged, extending to gingerly brush the knuckle of its claws against the crystal's facet. It shimmered brightly, and with a pinch of weariness, the droid guided his arm down to get a gentle hold on one of the gem's clusters. With the absolute bare minimum force necessary, BB-610 chipped a tiny fragment of it, the kyber crystal laying dormant in the palm of his claw.
Normally were the crystals colorless, bleak until bonded with its owner, but the caves of Ilum radiated an array of colors as BB-610 drew closer. It was as though the planet was dancing with him, a childlike spirit possessing the gemstones as they gleefully skipped and twirled with wonder and amazement at a droid earning their trust.
His optic remained fixed on it, its hue beginning to swim. It flirted with blue and green alike, before settling on the bright teal that had beckoned him over, bordering on a gorgeous sea green that complimented the blues of his chassis.
Blue, for the loyalty shown so eagerly by the astromech's devotion to his family. Green, for the growth he'd made to establish a harmony between metal and flesh. BB-610 had worked so tirelessly to prove his worth as a person, not just as a droid, and the kyber crystal that glistened a beautiful turquoise told his story perfectly.
In every sense of the word, he finally felt validated.
He felt so alive. So human. He couldn't sense the energy that laid before him in the same way a Jedi could, but he could feel it. That same protective bond he got towards all of his loved ones.
The caves roared in applause, the heart of Ilum beating in pride. He was making history, but BB-610 was too swept up in emotion to realize it.
The curve of his claw inched closer to its palm, securing a delicate hold on the teal kyber, arm now resting daintily against his chassis. BB-610 turned back to face Valery, the one who had made all of this possible, and while he hadn't the means to form a smile, the sheer joy he felt was palpable.
His optic glistened, his core welling with enough unbridled happiness that he'd have long been reduced to tears were he organic.
«I did it, mom.»
