Following the events of the saber tourney and shortly after losing his jaw, Braze had thrown himself back into doubling down on his training between assignments. He spent nearly six hours a day working through his all his forms, pushing himself harder than ever.

Today, though, drills weren't enough. He was looking for someone to test his mettle against. Someone with experience. Someone who could offer more than resistance. Someone who could offer insight. His eyes settled on an older man in one of the training halls. Without hesitation, Braze approached. He brought his fist to his open palm and dipped into a respectful bow.

"Excuse me, Master... My name is Braze… May I be so bold as to request a spar with you?"

The voice came filtered through a vocoder, each word stitched together from fractured recordings—old reports, classroom recitations, clipped answers given to instructors back when he still spoke with something closer to innocence. The cadence was off. The inflection wrong in all the subtle ways that mattered.

Garric had just finished up a training session when all of a sudden a young man entered the training hall he was located in. He looked familiar to him, though the mask over his face was new, but he was having trouble recalling his name (since he had only heard it here and there). Upon the request of a sparring match, the old jedi couldn't help but raise his eyebrow with a soft smile, as he responded to the Jedi Knight.

"Well, for starters, my name is Garric Wrennar, a pleasure to meet you Braze. As for a sparring match, are you sure you want to go for a round with an old man like me?"

Garric was definitely playing up his age; he had barely slowed down from when he was younger. But, sometimes, it was nice to see how people responded to an old jedi claiming he would be no good in training. Even if he were as withered as he made himself sound like, he had a feeling this young man would request a spar regardless, He could feel it, the young man's ambition and drive, striving for improvement.

"Age doesn't concern me, Master Wrennar. Only whether or not you can keep up."

Braze offered. He might have smiled if he still could however he was more interested in seeing what tricks the old dogs had.
"If you're too old, I promise to go easy on you."

The Vocoder added though the delivery wasn't as impetuously playful as he would have desired falling flat. He stepped back a few few and moved to draw his hilt and tossed it up in the air before catching it, igniting the blade and flourishing it in to a downwards cut posturing much like a Tapani Saber rake.

Garric let out a chuckle at the young man's words, glad that his intuition was correct. He, himself, took a few steps away before drawing his own saber from the scabbard in his belt. He drew the hilt and ignited the yellow blade, holding it to his side as he kept his left hand on his scabbard.

"Well, that is a very generous offer young man. Since I'd hate to disappoint, I assure you, you can go as difficult on me as you like. I promise you won't get hurt too badly if you decide to go all out, but I can't say the same for you pride, should that be the case."

Even though Braze's words were unable to properly convey their tone, Garric could feel the intent of them. He was always good at reading people's emotions after all. So, he decided to return his own words in a playful tone himself.

"As difficult as I like? Best we keep this to saber blows."

He offered in reply, taking up a mid-guard Makashi stance as he moved, cross-stepping toward his right, beginning briefly to circle the Master. He thrust forward suddenly, as if testing the Master's defense.

The lad was young still very young and spry. He was thin and wiry but he was well built for calisthenics.

He let out another chuckle at the boy's words, remaining prepared in his stance. He noticed the young man's stance was that of Makashi, at a mid-guard. He remained steady as the knight briefly circled him before the young man thrust towards him. Garric smirked as he made a quick turn to face him.

Instead of countering with his lightsaber, he instead pulled his scabbard and placed the end right at the path of Braze's own saber which slotted right in. He then raised his right leg and kicked Braze in the chest to create room between them once more.

"What do you think of my little trick, huh?"

Garric knew he wouldn't be able to pull the same trick twice, so he now discarded his scabbard to the side of the room before assuming a guarded stance.

As the scabbard surged toward him with kinetic energy, Braze quickly realized the trick a little too late, but moved with haste to attempt to counteract the saber lock from the scabbard with an elegant use of Trakata. The chalcedony teal blade flicking out as the boy deftly redirected his blade's hilt, slipping free from the scabbard's impending lock.

Braze hadn't expected such a wicked trick from the seasoned Master. The fluidity of Garric's movements drew his attention entirely towards the locking attempt. Within a heartbeat, Braze instinctively started to step back, yielding ground in a strategic retreat.

As he raised his arm to shield his chest and face, Braze braced himself, but Garric struck with strength. The old man lifted his leg and kicked solidly against Braze's arm in to his chest, the impact launching him backward, his feet skidding across the polished floor.

Looking breathless and startled Braze felt the heat of the moment sharpen his focus. The glow of his chalcedony teal lightsaber pulsed back to life in his grip as he recognized the challenge before him. Not only to maintain his ground but to learn and adapt against Garric's radiant skill.

A short pause followed, the vocoder stuttering through a clipped laugh.

"An old dog with new tricks. Impressive. Mildly annoying. But... impressive."

He began to circle again, slower this time, letting his peripherals do more work while he fixed his gaze on the old man's center mass.

"I see you don't skip leg day either."

He started to flourish his blade in slow, arcing motions as he prowled closer, angling toward Garric's flank.

"Old dog with new tricks, huh? I feel a tad wounded. I've been using that trick of mine since I was just a Knight myself, so I wouldn't call it 'new' exactly."

Garric made little movement as the young man, once again, circled him. All he did was continue to turn himself, to keep the young man in front of him at all times. His stance never dropped and his form never changed.

"As for your 'leg day' comment, as a matter of fact I don't skip leg day. Even so, I mostly rely on force augmentation, even before I was an old man. Believe it or not, when it comes to physicals, I've actually always been in the weaker side of things."

He may have spoken in a such a nonchalant and casual way, but his skill was ever present. He remained on guard for any sort of offence that he may face.

"I suppose no one ever scolded you for such tricks," he mused.

Brash dashed forward without warning, closing the gap in a burst of movement. At the last second, he feinted left and dropped low, his momentum shifting sharply.

Then, with practiced grace, he flourished his blade—arcing it up from below in a rising strike aimed high, turning the low movement into a sudden offensive burst.
He understood the principles behind Soresu well, and knew that waiting out an opponent was often one of the better strategies—something the old man was clearly putting into effect now against Braze's impetuous challenge. How now to break in through the defense...?
