To expound somewhat on the title, hi! I'm kinda new to this particular potion of the interwebs so could anyone provide me with a few pointers to get me moving the in vague direction of "not making an arse out of myself", please?

Welcome to Chaos.
To start, take a look at the general rules and rules for character creation.When you're ready to get started, you can post a character bio here. You're free to use whatever format you wish, but there's a template here if you'd care to use it. (nevermind, I see you've already done that...)
There are very few rules governing in-character (roleplaying) interaction, but you can read those here. If you follow Wheaton's Law, you'll be fine. There are also some guides from other writer's that might help you, such as a guide to creating a new character or writing Player versus Player (PvP) combat, where your Player Character (PC) is fighting another PC.
You may choose to be independent or be part of a faction. Factions are groups of PCs who share a common story, political agenda, or some other character-basis as a common background. These can be Jedi Orders (e.g. The Order of the Silver Jedi), political institutions based upon the Star Wars universe (e.g. The First Order), or entirely original ideas (e.g. The Kathol Outback). The largest factions are known as Major Factions and compete with one another for control of territory on the map.
If you have questions after you've looked at those resources, just post them here if you want.
