"I couldn't tell anyone. If word reached out to Pak and his gang they would've destroyed everything we loved." Explaining himself was hard right now between the slurping and the soda pop. "That's what they did anyways when my brother couldn't pay them for protection. I left them to die and I lost you in the process too. It wasn't worth it."

There was that thousand yard stare again that Ar'ekk always seemed to have when things had gone terribly wrong, a glance that stayed after all these years and that Tava could recognize instantly by laying her pearly amber eyes on him. So many sacrifices in the search for a better life ultimately came back to bite him a decade later, not only losing his family and the girl he swore to protect forever but his own life. Beneath the perfectly fine face laid the remnants of his life as a Jedi, scars going all across the right side of his face only covered thanks to synthflesh and a cybernetic arm to compensate the lost limb during the Malachor V war.

Too many sacrifices for nothing.

"Don't be." His hand reached out to solely touch her exposed shoulder and caressed her skin with his thumb, giving some relief in exchange. The pain had been supressed long ago and with that the mourning finished to only learn to live with it. "I love you too."

"After Malachor V and the war waged there we were beaten so I had to seek refuge somewhere I could disappear quickly. Nar Shaddaa was my last destination before eventually touching ground on Lithios. I saved the life of a very known Hutt there that became a target for some Mandalorians, I was in his palace one night and they were there to kill him until I stopped that and in return offered me riches. Of course, I accepted his offer because I had no other choice, you know? With that came The Hawk's Circle and the operation grew bigger but everything I once swore to never become was coming true. I stopped that and destroyed everything we've built to get away. Me and..."

Oh.

——————————————————————

They did destroy everything we loved. Eventually. But he knew that, so she didn't say. There were other things though. Things he didn't know and it was likely she would never tell him all of it. Tava just couldn't and she sucked in a breath. Nimble fingers went through her hair out of nervous habit and her eyes slammed shut. I'm still lost. "I've always been lost, Ar'ekk."

There was a lot of truth to that. Tava Del Nove was always a wanderer, always searching for home. Every time she thought she found it, whatever it was, slipped through her fingers. [member="Arekk"] had been the closest thing and in the short proximity between them, the darkly mop headed woman, felt home. Smelt it. And it didn't have anything to do with the building.

Chest tight, heart thudding so loud, she could swear her ears were going to bleed. She flinched when he touched her, eyes still closed. Tears glittered on her lash-line, threatening to spill over her cheeks. Why are you telling me that... Don't tell me that... Not daring to squeeze a blink for fear that she would begin crying and never stop, Tava peeled her lids open.

The rest of what he explained sunk in a little at a time and upon hearing Nar Shaddaa, her big brown eyes widened. Nostrils flared and the first of her tears came, in a single stream along her nose. It was there, written all over her face- she knew- and her diminutive frame shuddered at it. Jealousy simmered there, one she could do nothing about. That time was...gone. Tava stood with a shaky breath, feet silent as she made her way to the kitchen. From there, a clank of glass and the rattle of a lid twisting off.

No one ever wanted to hear their place had been taken. Let alone see it too.

When she emerged again, the only thing changed was a full bottle of Reserve in her hand and moist cheeks. Tava didn't even bother with glasses.

She was silent as she lifted the bottle to her lips, "They made him fight, you know..." Tava swallowed a mouthful of the potent liquid a few shades lighter than her eyes and tears and the weight of her sank into the couch again.

"They burned the house down. Sodden gave them hell, I'm sure of it."

Ar'ekk hated seeing Tava crying, seeing the tears rolling down her soft cheeks made his heart ache almost as if he had been suffering a cardiac arrest right there and then. She didn't deserve him back in her life again after disappearing for a decade nor allowing him into her personal life again. It wasn't fair and the slicer didn't deserve it by anything in the galaxy. Even though all the things he had been saying stung like a thousand needles prickling on your skin, he swore that he'd tell nothing but the truth to the Coruscanti girl.

He'd never lie to her. That was a promise made long ago but that still remained to this date.

"I'm sorry I did this to you. All of it." His palm quickly moved away from her shoulder and instead refocused on his soda pop, swirling the liquid and letting it travel down his esophagus. "To this date I still blame myself for not telling you. I should have but I didn't, you thought I was dead all this time. You didn't deserve that and everything that happened."

Crying was never his forte and this wouldn't be the occasion though deep inside he was broken in a thousand pieces, voice cracking a little yet recomposing itself just enough to not let Tava notice what he was feeling. They shared a lot of things together and emotions was the number key thing between the two, crying on eachother's shoulder and healing with nothing but the special bond they had.

"Please, don't do that." He practically begged to her while pointing at the liquor bottle, seeing more of himself in Tava. "That's not the answer. Drowning your sorrows. It's worthless, trust me..."

——————————————————————

The things she had to do to survive. The things she witnessed. One hand fell to her lap, flat of her palm rubbing idly on her thigh while balancing the bottle on the other. "They did burn the house down," brown eyes looked into the bottle and Sodden wouldn't talk to her after that. Her only guess was that perhaps it was of the thought, that Tava was in on it. The woman snorted at the notion, her head shaking at the memories.

After taking albeit a much smaller sip, her voice dropped, "They got Drax too..." almost a whisper, maybe on account of Rena not being far off, "...oh, Ar'ekk... you wouldn't have recognized him. He was...he was...in so much pain and I couldn't...maybe if I would've, oh, but I couldn't save him." It had been a long time ago now, but it was still fresh in her memory, as was having to end her furry companion's misery. Tava looked to [member="Arekk"] then, the skin around her eyes having gone a little swollen, wet with tears. "Darla had just had their puppies..." she laughed bitterly, hand shaking enough that she set the bottle down. "I was only able to save Rena and the rest...they're in the pits...or worse."

Pit was just another word, underworld term, for arena. "Heh...I'd be dead if it weren't for her, Pak would have saw to that." The large canines were thought to be a mixed breed because of importing exotics. Because of their size and coat, they appeared to be a hybrid of the Loth-wolf, or at the very least, a distant cousin that mixed with the common wild dog. "They use them for fighting, often to the death..." Small hands balled into fists. The mangy beasts were all the girl had left in the universe...

Until now.

"It's not the answer, but it comes a very close second," tentatively, Tava reached for him., grazing the sleeve of his jacket.

"If I could've gotten my hands around their necks..." The flaring of his nostrils and the sudden change of demeanor in Ar'ekk gave way to the obvious rage that had taken him just thinking about what happened and what Tava was telling him. "Savages. Poor Drax didn't deserve that, he was more loyal than any of those fething pricks."

His hand turned into a fist that expressed the anger flowing through his veins as the story unfolded, memories coming in like an angry hurricane destroying everything in its path. Images of their burned down house and nobody to expect him in return despite having dreamed of just spending time with loved ones like it should have been. Everything was ripped apart in a Coruscant minute and there was nothing he could've done except staying.

"Rena definitely loves you, I can feel Drax around too. He never left us." He said with a faint smile, leaving his empty food container aside and the fizzy pop with it. "Thankfully they're in a place where they are loved equally."

Countless of nights were spent alone and in the dark thinking of a better life, many what ifs clouded his mind and disallowed him to move on. Reuniting with Tava was the key thing he had been expecting for over ten years that would eventually lead him to rethink all of his choices and become the better man he couldn't be during his absence. There had to be a way to make up for all the lost time and rebuild what was lost.

"What is the answer?" Ar'ekk asked pretending to be oblivious, glances clashing with hers momentarily as she tentatively reached out for him, giving her that signature smile again.

——————————————————————

"No," she shook her head, "then they would have had killed you too, [member="Arekk"] ..." Women and their roller coaster emotions. "Stars, no...I couldn't have bore it," the hand that had reached, changed direction and swept gently across his cheek. Pax had done it out of spite, as he was unable to reach or find the elusive man before. They shared that in common, but nothing more. She'd sooner be spaced out of an airlock than be in the same room with that man. Tava had though, to survive. At least, until she met Boon.

That was an adventure all in itself, reminding her of the years with her mother and the ace slicer. Only it was darker, more lucrative. Higher stakes, more chits. That was the name of the game.

A wide smile touched her lips at the mention of Drax, "I thought so," being the superstitious type after all. "I just lack.. your sensitivity. See, even the Force knows I'm bad and the Galaxy as a whole is probably better off for it." The laugh was genuine, but didn't last long.

"Oh, but if I knew that answer..." Tava stood, turning to head in the direction of the view and the balcony. "Do you know that answer?"

"I wish I had. But you are right about that."

No revenge was worth dying for as it wouldn't bring your loved ones back and instead could doom you for the eternity to come. That was a price that Ar'ekk wasn't willing to pay and was gladful to not have succumbed to that natural instinct of just murdering everyone involved in cold blood, he had the means to do that but instead took the smart choice.

The soft touch of her hands stroking his cheek made him feel like that teenager again, a warm and fuzzy feeling on his stomach told him to feel like that much so.

"Hah, come on. Don't stay stuff like that now." The laugh was shared with one of his own. "But no, I don't. I wish I did."

Maybe the answer was closer than they expected.

——————————————————————

"It's true and you know it," Tava half-snorted, half-laughed and turned, pressing her back against the cool glass upon reaching the veranda. "Can you imagine me with Force powers, Ar'ekk?" The notion was ridiculous and her barely turned up lips exclaimed as much. She watched him from across the room with the city and all its lights behind her. "The stars know, half the city would be burned by now...besides that, I can barely control my own emotions...let alone be privvy to the privacy of another's."

The rain picked up and massive drops splooshed and splashed making it sound like there were a street war in the distance. There probably was. Lightening crackled and thunder rolled, the clouds appearing as if they belonged in a club when they lit up in colors of bright white, blue, and purple. Both hands slid around her waist, hugging the light swell of hips and Del Nove's head canted to the side.

There was so much time lost between them, yet so little space now. The slicer didn't move though, but instead continued to gaze at him. Perhaps afraid if she looked away, [member="Arekk"] would disappear again. The Galaxy would just swallow him whole. Her lower lip was suddenly tugged, chewed nervously upon by fairly white teeth.

"So, how did you get that scar?"

"You would definitely wreak havoc." Ar'ekk replied with the same half-snort, even thinking of the idea made him giggle, arms spread on the couch as he laid eyes on her. "But I wouldn't let it consume you. That stuff takes time, lots of time. Spent years stuck inside a temple before I could do anything."

Nobody would disappear, not anymore. If he ever did that then Tava would never forgive him and that was something the former Jedi was not going to allow to happen. There was time to catch up and make up for the lost time because that's all they had... time. His gaze fell upon the Coruscanti and suddenly released a relieved sigh, almost as if seeing her brought him that inner peace that loved to fade away from his grasp at moments.

"This one? Well..." He was beginning to giggle before even telling the story. "You ever had constant drunk fights at your local nightclub? Turns out that fighting a pit champion with ten glasses of Savareen brandy in your system isn't a very good idea. I got my butt handed back to me."

Typical Ar'ekk. Some people never change...

——————————————————————

Curiosity sparkled in her amber pools as she listened to him. The shock was still there though. Tava would have never dreamed... That was a lie. She had dreamed of a moment like this and it took what seemed to be a lifetime for it to become reality. The woman wanted to pinch herself, just to be sure. Nevertheless, when the duo-haired Firrerro woke this morning, [member="Arekk"] had not been in those plans. The turn of events was a welcome one though. One she didn't know she needed.

It was a gamble everyday... a silent plea that lurked in the very back of her mind to the universe. "You always did have a way with bumping elbows with the wrong people." There were times Tava thought she was one of those people. The type that left black smut, or a mark upon the soul of anything she got too close to. Where she was lucky monetarily, extremely lucky at times, unfortunately the same could not be said for the other aspect of her life. "Will you tell me of your time at the temple, Ar'ekk?"

In this happenstance though, a very different feeling hung in the air and against the havoc of storms in her mind, her heart.

Hope.

"I was originally planned to train with the Grandmaster of the Silver Jedi but it was decided better to send me with another master from the Galactic Republic." He explained with honesty and expressing himself with many hand gestures. "So I was in Yutan in no time to train. The routine was as expected from a very serious doctrine like the Jedi's, wake up early for meditation and lessons. Lots of reading and physical acclimatation. Took me over a year to pass my first two trials to become a Padawan. I couldn't be a youngling due to my age of course."

The bond between master and student became one of a father and his son, [member="Tugoro Taidarious"] was the most loyal and incredible person that Ar'ekk could've ever met. If it wasn't for his teachings and wisdom Ar'ekk would've fallen in the hands of the dark side and who knows what he could be doing nowadays instead of living a very quiet life, sort of, like today. He owed him everything.

"Tuogoro, my master, was very strict but I appreciated that." A smile surfaced every now and then as the story unfolded. "We went on a handful of missions together and with that the years passed by in the blink of an eye until the One Sith struck the temple and destroyed completely. We fled in different directions to only end up in the same planet unbeknownst to each other, eventually reuniting by surprise. We decided to continue our training either way and I managed to become a Jedi Knight thanks to him."

Those were some good times that he certainly appreciated and remembered fondly.

——————————————————————

With a small giggle out of no where, she commented, "Do you make a habit of reuniting with people by surprise?"

Given the circumstances, it was a little comical and lightened the heavier mood. "Tell me about him. I want to know everything..." pausing, Tava pushed from the window and walked slowly to the fireplace, "...everything that I missed." A slender digit passed over a button that blended in, igniting the flames and turning on the exhaust fan. From there, the native gambler slid on the arm of an over-sized chair directly across from him.

"I give you my word, that I will try my very best to not over react again," the smile that stole her face was akin to one she often gave him when they were but teenagers. "...I have just missed so much, Ar'ekk..." It was taking every bit of her not to reach out or curl up in his lap. To let everything just fade away to nothing, like it didn't matter or it didn't exist. Nothing except for [member="Arekk"] and her. Tava swallowed, pressing her palms together and tucking them betwixt her legs when she crossed one over the other.

Soft, but bright sienna pools searched his scruffy face, "I don't want to miss anymore...if there is something I must do...if there's..."

"Maybe." He countered with almost immediately, grinning.

Ar'ekk laid back on the couch and extended his legs after getting tired of being in the same position for a couple of minutes, his full stomach didn't help the case much either. Hazel-blue eyes followed Tava as she moved around the place to finally find her spot on the over-sized chair nearby, the warmth of the fireplace quickly making the apartment feel cozier than it already was.

"There's not much to tell about him, unfortunately. We lost contact two years ago or so." The slicer explained with a somber tone. "But I'm sure he's alright, tough man that is. Last I knew he was on Dantooine with another group of Jedi. Obviously our paths are not the same so I could not join him."

He offered the girl an affectionate warm smile that just screamed "Don't worry about a single thing" to her, that everything would be alright. Eventually, Ar'ekk reached into the bags of food and retrieved another box of noodles and fizzy pop to devour but left them aside for a moment to speak with Tava. He did not want to interrupt let alone keep his eyes off from the person he had missed so much.

"You don't have to anymore. I'm right in front of you."

——————————————————————

"Are you..." she glanced sideways, letting her hair hide half of her face while her eyes held the flames. A part of her was still in disbelief, wondering if she might be dreaming. If someone had dosed her up for torture with the surest way to get information out of her? Just dangle [member="Arekk"] in front of the slicer. Take it away and promise to give it back in exchange. Tava shifted, lost in thought.

The face of the criminal that was partly in shadow looked weary, a little confused and she stole a glance at the bottle she'd put down. Just a step away. Liquid earthen pools flickered to him from under her dark lashes. "Was he nice to you? Did he hurt you? Why did your path change?" she said suddenly, breaking the silence.

After a moment longer, she reached her hands out to him, feeling too far away though they shared the space. "Ar'ekk..." low, near a mumble. Whispers. A plea.

"He became the father figure I never had." The slicer slash gambler made sure to make that clear, reassuring Tava that nothing bad happened between the two. "But his life was devoted to the Jedi and I had already deviated from that path. That life wasn't for me but being independent. You know me better than anyone else."

Ar'ekk's hazel-blue eyes could only remain on the Coruscanti's liquid earthen pools and would not dare to look in any other direction, feeling completely captivated by her beautiful face and inbetween transporting him back to their teenager days. Times where they had nothing else but each other and held to that dearly, swearing that one day they were going to leave together and live a complete life.

Was that too much to ask now? Maybe too late? He hoped not.

"What's troubling you, myo vupee?" Ever since they were kids that Ar'ekk loved calling Tava that, "My love" in Huttese. It was a very affectionate word that somehow he still remembered after all these years. "Tell me."

Hands stroked hers gently but enough to never let go, eyes looking out for Tava's with intensity ready to hear what she had to say. He was there for her and wouldn't go for nothing.

——————————————————————

A father figure? Soft lips pursed and slid into an easy smile, happy for him. He did well enough as a child and a teen for not having that figure. A little rough around the edges, but a good guy. Tava knew him...well. Or, she had and wanted to believe what he said about knowing him better. It was naive to, in her experience. Oh, but she wanted to.

Searching his bright eyes once more, her hand came to rest on his cheek, thumb swiping back and forth. "Do I really?" There were still so many things she didn't know and the curiosity shown on her features. Tava slid forward, enough to press her knees to his and have their noses a few hairs from touching, "Ar'ekk, do I...do I really?"

The woman's heart was in her throat, pulse erratic. Myo vupee. Small nostrils on her nose flared and she swallowed, running her tongue across lips that were suddenly dry. She was torn between telling him what he had not brought up yet, what he too was avoiding perhaps. Dropping her head, letting it almost fall into his lap, Tava heaved a sigh.

Finally, having decided that she wouldn't begin their new relationship -whatever that was- with lies, Tava's saccharine voice lowered, "Ar'ekk...I...I saw you on Nar Shaddaa some time ago... Who was she?" There it was, all raw emotion and even though she was slightly bent over, the past love of [member="Arekk"] stilled. It was all in the past, she told herself. A past...she was robbed of, endured... all without her other half. There were an awful lot of whys. She'd rather have the choice of being the fool instead of being played for one.

Why? Because there was no choice in her love for him. It would always be there, until the end of her days. There had to be something she could chose. Right?

"Of course you do." That's if you go back a decade ago, she knew things about him that nobody else did. Countless of nights crying and laughing together were proof of that. "Though the last few years are still a mistery... you still do."

Hazel-blue eyes fluttered with the touch of her fingertips against his rough skin, breathing becoming slightly shallow and returning a piercing glance while their space grew shorter as Tava scooted closer with him. Only a few inches separated them from what they had been thinking about for so long. Ar'ekk was unable to keep his eyes off her, it was inevitable.

And with that came that question that continued to sting to this very date, the truth about his lost loved one. The other half that had succumbed thanks to the awful choices Ar'ekk made once he involved himself with the underworld.

"Tava. Are you sure you want to know?" She deserved an explanation after so long, even asking that seemed like a stupid thing and he felt that way too. Lying to her was out of the question because that was the promise the slicer made to the girl and swore to keep until the end of their days. "She was my girlfriend."

Releasing a quick sigh, Ar'ekk prepared to have this conversation and tell Tava nothing but the truth no matter how hard it was to hear. If they were to believe in something and pour their hearts into it then honesty would be the key to all.

"Her name was Jyn. Jyn Sol. The girl that saved me from the claws of darkness and died because of it. Murdered in cold blood on the streets of Lithios by the same people that once swore eternal loyalty to me. Took her from my grasp and left her unrecognizable that I wasn't even able to give her a funeral. I was going to marry her."

It was all out and if the Coruscanti girl wanted to know more then he would happily oblige without skipping any details.

"She's the reason I am still breathing and didn't end inside a coffin. That was her."

——————————————————————

No, she wasn't sure she wanted to know. In part because she loved [member="Arekk"] and in part because as his best friend, Tava was supposed to be happy for him. Right? That's how it was supposed to work. It wasn't as easy as all that. The world was cruel and reality just the same. She eyed the bottle again from her hunched position. This was different, or it had been. No matter how bad it got, how lost she was...

Frack it, Tava. Frack it, feck it. Just keep moving, stay busy.

Work. She had thrown herself in the business of bettering her life and the cost was never too high. You just sink your teeth in and chew- even the sinewy bits and the bone. Tava could do all that. But ask her to face ghosts? Revisit that broken girl on the Smuggler's Moon? Del Nove reeled, attempting to grasp at the life she built for herself, the walls she erected. It crumbled with one look from those blue-hazel eyes.

Perhaps in the way of things, he did help her survive after all. The pain he inadvertently caused propelled a young, albeit not innocent Tava into the woman she needed to be in order to survive The Underworld. "Jyn," she said her name clearly as if in rebellion, using the pain to grasp at the survivor she was. It wasn't Sol's fault and she could hardly blame the woman for falling in love with him, but the slicer needed an internal target aside from Boon. Why did he always have to be right?

"I'm...sorry you lost her," glancing up only a moment, Tava rolled her shoulders and straightened, "lost your chance at happiness. No one deserves to die like that." Her hand came to swipe at her face, possibly discarding remnants of tears. Sienna brows knitted together and she had a hard time looking up at him. "She sounds wonderful...I'm...I'm grateful to her for your life."

"I learned to live with the pain and she would want me to keep moving which is what I'm trying to do."

The cards had been played on the table and that was everything Ar'ekk could tell to Tava about his past and well kept secrets. What happened had happened and there was nothing left to do but embrace the harshest of truths, His love for Jyn would be there always but the moment to say goodbye and keep living your life had to come one day. The feelings for Tava had never changed either, they were both the same old teenagers that looked at each other the same way but after telling her this would that change?

"That's all I have." The slicer explained as he sunk deeper into the couch, feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the whole thing. "After two years you have to move on."

Maybe the Coruscanti girl had lovers of her own and Ar'ekk knew that if she was in love with someone else then he'd accept that because there was no way the man had control over that after a decade of not seeing each other. Perhaps he was even stepping on toes while in her apartment and the idea of being together, whatever that meant, was nothing but a mere mirage.

"You don't have a boyfriend, right?" He said in jest with that same stupid smug smile on his face, she was probably sick of it already. "Because if you do then I don't want to be a burden..."

Who are you kidding? He would be as pissed as she was at him.

——————————————————————

"Ar'ekk Daesharacor," she found his eyes, narrowed her own, "...what kind of woman do you take me for?" Okay, to be fair they had come across one another while she was dressed on another man's arm. It wasn't what it looked like though. That was something else she had to share and tell him. Tava wasn't so much hostile as she was shocked and unable to remove the expression of it from her face. Eventually though, the woman regained composure.

All she said in response to that was, "No, I don't have a boyfriend," face serious, long lashes blinking a few times, "I have many." Contacts. Tava had contacts of various sorts and Rena. Also, Boon to an irritating degree. That man chafed her, but he'd saved her. The half of a puffcake that had be left earlier was then plucked by two fingers and disappeared in her mouth shortly after. While chewing, she watched [member="Arekk"] and then, reached nearing the whiskey again. Her hand paused atop it, "You're not a burden."

Instead, at the last minute, Tava opted for the moon fruit fizzy pop and polished of the contents left and winked. With a little bit of a sway, she leaned back mirroring the former Jedi, and sunk into the plush confines of the chair. There was something else, she thought as she propped her feet up on the coffee table.

"What about you, Ar'ekk, since you've moved on, who is the lucky girl?"
