Braving the cold of Rhen Var [The Republic]

VlPER

Victory is mine!
Viper had allowed everyone else to go in, and brought up the rear of the group. After getting back to his feet, he brought out a handy piece of cave equipment that he made himself since he could find a prebuilt one. Withdrawing a simple flashlight, he slip it into a hole he had strategically placed in his hood. Ne he had a makeshift headlamp. Turnng his lightsaber on, he let the tip of the active blade drag along the floor behind them. Periodically he'd stop and put an arrow in the line pointing back the way they came. No sense getting lost.

He was taken aback when...Johnny was it?, yelled for Kana to stop. He said something about "bad mojo", but no real clue as to what it could be down there. As the group moved on, he lingered by the offshoot cave. Johnny was probably right...he should stick with the group. But, something was very tantalizing about this direction. Maybe it was his almost insatiable curiosity. He did tend to ave a problem with being told no and then doing it anyway...but then that usually happened when there was no reason for the no.

This was another one of those examples. The group got farther away, but the cave seemed to call to him. He was left torn with returning to the group, or going in alone...

Edit: After much deliberation, he gave one last look to the departing group, and quietly headed down the other way to see what it was. He did make sure to keep his flashlike forward and his saber activated though. Just in case.

The Aleph super fighter would touch down upon the dense snow and ice of Rhen Var, particularly nearby the mountain-cave that had just been discovered. Thanks to his ship's speed and his superior view from above, the youth had managed to spot a clearing that was suitable to land on before the group had even arrived. The craft's engine would become less audible as it lowered, powering down before the landing gears folded out. Lifting his arms, Tugoro would push upwards on the fighter's hatch, allowing the light from outside to flood into the cockpit. Grabbing a ledge, the Jedi would pull himself atop the fighter's hull, giving him a decent view of the tall mountain. With a determined, but chattering grin, the cold Padawan would begin to make his way towards a specific area.

He had spotted an opening within the mountain, that was not too far away from the entrance everyone else had made there way in from. It had been a small opening, that most likely led to a long drop due to it's positioning. With a few strides and leaps of force enhancing prowess, Tugoro would plant his feet upon the thick snow that was beneath him, allowing him to gaze down the icy tunnel that lead into the mountain's cave. The light managed to illuminate a small portion of the cave, giving him a view of solid ground just below. With a thankful and confident nod, Tugoro would take a single step forward, allowing his robed form to drop swiftly and silently from above. His leather booted feet would impact with the cold stone of the cave as he came to land, one that was softened through a brief expulsion of telekinesis. Coincidentally enough, the Padawan had managed to land in front of [member="viper"], who thought it a good idea to separate from the group. Just as Tugoro had.

Corvus was used to caves. Corellia was famous for its underwater ones and she’d explored enough in her time. But the cold was the challenge here. Even underwater on Corellia, it wasn’t sub-zero.

She was pleased that VlPER was providing light but as their eyes grew accustomed to the darkness she was aware that – like most caves she’d visited – luminous lichen lined the walls where there wasn't ice and provided low light, but it was just enough to see by.

Finally they reached a large cavern that seemed to curve to the right. It must have been eight hundred metres in diameter. Continuing to be wary of her footing – plus Johnny’s foreboding – she kept pace with the group.

As they turned the corner they saw an exit from the section they were in. Unlike the walls they stood beside, the entrance glowed orange. They must all have felt the disturbance in the force by now. After an hour of walking through the caves, they must have found where the crystals were. Corvus reached to her bag involuntarily, making sure she still had the components for her lightsaber.

The disturbance in the Force grew until, in front of the group, a transparent image formed. Like a holocron and definitely not human – but filled with the Force.

“I have been observing you. You have done well to reach this far but I give you a warning. I am not a guardian of the place you seek – I have no power to stop you – but I beseech you to consider your motives before you enter the Solari cave itself.”

“I was once a Jedi. I went by the name of Ulic Qel-Droma and once trained a Padawan not far from here. Sunrider. She was a great student. But that is of no consequence. I was once a good Jedi and at one time a very bad one. This planet represents where I returned to the Light side and also where I finally joined the Force.”

“My body was placed in a tomb a distance from here and protected by some guardians of its own. A young Jedi named Anakin Skywalker defeated them and learned from me about how to defeat the Force Harvester. Another fine young Jedi – no doubt destined to do great things.”

“Without the guardians, my tomb was repeatedly robbed and desecrated. My Force ghost fragmented. The Yuuzhan Vong came and went and I suspect I’m the last remnant of my ghost left.”

“As I say, I am no gatekeeper but I have a sombre message for you. The caves are strong with the Force. Is it Light or is it Dark? That all depends on you.”

“The Force has brought you here. Your path is clearly set out but is fraught with danger. There is a part of yourself in these caves – you may not be seeking it but you will find it."

“Jedi believe they choose a crystal to create a saber. The truth is that the crystal – as an embodiment of the Force – chooses you. At least that is my belief.”

“Choose not the prettiest or the one whose colour reflects what you believe a guardian or a consular should have. I’m not saying don’t choose blue or green or any other colour that is traditional – but trust in the Force.”

“I sense your Master is near and if you need her, she will be there at the appropriate time.”

As the others left Kana turned back towards Johnny Diamonds.

“Alright, JD. Stick close and we’ll see about that bad mojo, alright?” She gestured at him to follow. “I got the glowstick to keep the both of us safe, relax.”

As they entered the curve and the bright light at the end of it illuminated a big section of the cave Kana couldn’t help but open her mind in astonishment.

“Woaaaah.” The ghost appearing got the same reaction. “Woah!”

This was the first time Kana had ever seen something like this. A ghost in the force, as amazing as it was there was something eerie about it just like there still was something eerie about this whole cave. Then it came, the mention of danger. She would have paid more attention to the other message of crystals but no, the danger part was definitely a lot more menacing.

“… Johnny, I… How did you know that?” Kana turned to talk to the others. “I don’t want to alarm you guys, but that ‘bad feeling’ I had isn’t going away.”

he was confused when he saw kana and johnny react since he was not close to the force. reaper looked on his holo map but something was wrong. the map was being a bit glitchi because he started seeing red dots around the area the group was in.

he looked confused and activated his flash light on the rifle and looked around. "this damn map is being a pain in the ass right now, im gone go guard the entrance while you guys keep on looking for the kristall" he started walking out from the cave. when reaper got to the gate entrance he went out and sat down while guarding the entrance and activated his radio just in case something happend.

Viper delved further into the cave. He thought he may have heard some rustling behind him as the trooper left the cave and Padawan Tugoro entered. But Viper didn't go back to check, instead opting to move onward. Not to much farther in, a break in the wall which surrounded him, gave him a glimpse of the cavernous hall the others were in. He gave a quick glance, and was about to move on, when a ghostly shape appeared before them. The sight stopped him dead in his tracks as he wished he had remained with the group, to better see what was going on. He turned his flashlight and saber off so their light would not hinder his view of the ghost.

As the figure began to speak though, the voice was as clear and understandable to him as it would have been, had he remained with the group. The hair on the back of his neck began to stand on end, as the ghostly man gave both his warning, and his suggestion on crystals. And finally the image disappeared. His head turned down toward the path he had been traveling. A worm of doubt began to make its way into the young Jedi's mind.

He should probably go back...but if he stayed with the rest of the group, his chances of finding a good crystal went down dramatically. Everyone would be looking for a good Solari crystal after all. Noticing now the amazing luminescent quality of the lichen attached all over the cave walls, Viper smiled in wonder and amazement at the site. "Truly remarkable, was nature. How grand in its design." He thought to himself.

With a look of determination, Viper pressed forward, alone...

Ever since she had entered the caves, Corvus had been reflecting on the construction of her lightsaber. She had read that it acts as a focusing device, allowing the Jedi to reach a state of attunement with the Force which enhances their combat capabilities.

Other than the occasional altercation, she’d only ever really used training sabers and knew that once crafted, the lightsaber would somehow be attuned to her. She wondered what it would be like to hold her own lightsaber, how different it might feel? Unlike some of the Padawans she knew, she was not interested in a saber of her own in order to run off and fight Sith. No, she saw it as part of her learning path to become a Knight. To her, drawing a saber in earnest was a failing, not something to aspire to.

And she wondered if there was a crystal that was right for her here? For at least the third time in short order, she had failed to live up to her own philosophy. Be mindful of the future, but not at the expense of the moment.

She could see VlPER up ahead and ignored the words of the trooper. She could feel a cool breeze on the back of her neck. A familiar feeling. Too familiar. Abeloth!

Before she could react, an eight-foot long spider dropped from a hole in the ceiling, shooting a thread of silk that covered Corvus’ head. As her hands went up to her face, trying to claw at the finely spun and very strong material, the spider dropped onto her, beginning to coil its long, thin legs around her, encasing her body in a coffin of silk.

At precisely that moment, three more spiders dropped down to the ground, in the middle of the group.

Tugoro had fallen into a crouched position after he landed. Standing up to his full height, the youth would turn to watch Viper, shrugging as he walked on. He wasn't of much interest to the Padawan either way. A strange feeling would begin to vibrate through the force, sending an unpleasant chill up his spine. Something was wrong. Gritting his teeth in annoyance, Tugoro realized his error in judgment, for he should have never left the group. At least he could show up to save the day. Well, he'd try. Kicking off across the rocky surface, Tugoro would break into a full speed sprint, his body turning into a blur as he moved through the darkness. What was happening? The boy was not sure, though he would figure out. Arriving on the scene, the brown haired lad would notice a shimmering blue silhouette, though that did not remain in his focus for long. With his enhanced speed and reflexes, Tugoro hoped to act quickly, allowing the force to flow around him.

Lifting both of his arms, the boy would utilize his telekinesis prowess, causing a stream of force energy to surge forward through the air. The appliance of his powers would act in two ways, as one arm remained extended, the other tucking close to his body. A push and pull would be released, hoping to force the familiar creatures away from [member="Corvus Raaf"], while also attempting to get her away from the spiders, creating an opening for those who wished to attack.

Victory is mine!
Viper's movement forward was again checked by the sudden sounds of battle. His own force sense also began to kick in when Corvus specifically was attacked. He quickly returned to the break in his tunnel to see what was going on. His eyes widened as he saw in the distance, huge spiders descending on the group of Jedi. In his customary manner, Viper dove through the hole and into the main room where the others were without thinking. Smoothly rolling to his feet, Viper's lightsabers ignited to life as he charged toward their newest enemies.

Before he could close the distance, another spider dropped in front of him and blocked his path. Viper had a sometimes bad habit of not having fear for things he probably should. This was another one of those times. In Viper's mind, all he saw was his friends, several of which were unarmed, being attacked by massive bugs for lack of a better term. And this...this...thing was getting in his way. The creature gave a shrill roar and charged.

Viper only saw it as an annoyance though that could be dealt with later. He force jumped up and over the spider, and began to sprint towards his friends. He then saw Tugoro appear out of nowhere in front of him and seemingly coming to the aid of Corvus. A small sigh of relief escaped his lips as he paused to see how he could help the others. His mind raced as he looked for what he had at his disposal. Looking up, he saw the stalagmites and stalactites were all over the cave.

An almost feril grin, flashed across his face. Reaching out with the force, he broke a few of the spires hanging down from the ceiling and sent them crashing down like rocky spears, into the backs of the other spiders. He hoped he actually hit them all. But he would not get to see the effect of his attack, or confirm he hit anything at all, as the spider behind him launched a string of sticky webbing at his feet and began to drag him back.

Viper landed with a thud, having had all the air knocked out of him. He gasped for air and flailed his sabers around wildly trying to keep his attacker at bay while he attempted to recover. His head was spinning like a top. Somewhere along the way, he must have hit a rock with his head on the way down. Fighting to regain focus, one strike did manage to slice the string and stop his being dragged to his doom. It was only a temporary respite though.

For the now infuriated spider, charged his prone form again as he lay on the floor. Defiantly holding a saber out toward the monstrous spider, Viper tried to crawl away and get back to his feet...

”CORVUS! NOOO!!”

Kana’s screaming - a confirmation of [member="Johnny Diamonds"]’ vision - echoed throughout the cave as the spider covered her friend in its silky web. The other spiders descended upon them and for the first time during their little adventure she truly felt afraid. Not of the spiders but for her friends. Kana had already lost enough friends as it was, she wasn’t going to sit idly by as her new friends shared the faith of those before them. Not again.

She aimed her saber at the spider in front of her. Her heart began beating, her teeth gritting. These things were monsters; they had no compassion or feelings and deserved no less. They were Kana’s enemies and they had to die for what they were doing to her friends. Of this she grew more certain for each passing breath.

Then it lunged at her.

Dodging her enemy with a swift attack Kana desiccated the spider’s legs. Kana ignored it’s hissing, it's pained sounds as it staggered away from her and instead seized the opportunity to strike at it once more. With a second slash the rest of the spider’s legs were gone and it lie defenseless on its back.

She slowly began impaling it with her blade. As its squirming intensified she began pulling up towards the rest of its miserable body and before long the squirming died out as with the spider, it was over.

The sound of the ceiling coming down on the rest of the spiders caught Kana by surpris and she threw a glance back at where she had last seen Corvus’ pod but it was gone, Corvus was… safe with the others, and Kana had just…

Her eyes opened wide in horror as she turned the saber off. What had she done? Slowly backing away from the spider’s massacred corpse Kana tripped over a stone and ended up on her butt. Horror was replaced by panic as she pushed herself further away from the body until she found herself hugging the wall. She had just done something horrible because of her attachment to someone. A reaction she hadn’t been in control of and that creature paid the price for it.

Kana felt a new fear slide in. Not of the spiders or her friends, but of herself and what she had done.

while reaper was sitting outside the cave entrance he could hear something going on inside the cave. he thought for himself "whats going on, sounds like something is wrong" he got up and picked up his rifle and started running to the group that were inside the cave. when he got there he saw kana sitting on the ground in panic and he saw part of the celling had collapsed. there were corpses of spiders everywhere and still saw some still alive and one trying to attack Viper. he kicked the spider so it got of Viper and started shooting. he hit in the head then quickly picked up Viper "get kana back in the game while il try to help Tugoro and Corvus". he moved to Tugoro and told him "cover me while im getting Corvus out of there" he ran between the spiders and then grabbed Corvus silk coffin and started dragging her out while shooting at the spiders "Corvus are you still with us!!!??" he only hoped she was still alive and tried to get behind Tugoro.

Corvus was feeling a lot of things simultaneously. Pain was one - primarily from being dragged bodily whilst encased in the silken bodysuit! Embarrassment was another - she should have sensed this - especially having encountered such creatures before. And having ignored the trooper's warning. Sometimes jedi could be blind to anything that wasn't Force derived.

And finally she was beginning to feel frustrated. She cycled through the skills she had at her disposal and none seemed to be relevant to getting her out of the cocoon.

So she relaxed and used her Force Sight. All of the Jedi and the trooper seemed fine. Two spiders dead and two badly injured. No more in the immediate vicinity. Now if only she could talk!

Viper let out a long sigh of relief when the trooper showed up and blew the spider away. Giving the man a relieved smirk he said, "Well, I guess that makes us even trooper." A wide grin flashed across his face for a second while he jumped back to his feet. He really needed to work on being more sure of his footing. That was the second time, he had been unable to get back up quick enough, once knocked down. At this time time had a bit better end result. He thought briefly before casting that topic back into the back of his mind.

Following up the trooper with his blades out, he followed the mans suggestion, and moved toward Kana. Casting a quick glance at the corpses that lay around, a slightly confused expression became apparent on his face as he gazed upon his panicked friend pressed up against the wall. Seemingly trying to back away from a threat that no longer existed.

Deactivating his sabers, he moved next to Kana and said in a soft caring voice. "Hey...Kana...you ok? It's ok, their dead or gone. We beat them back. We're safe." He placed his hands on her shoulders, hoping the touch of a friend would ease her nerves. "Kana, look at me." He said a little more sternly as she continued to focus on the dead spider a few meters away. "Kana. You're ok. You did well." He gave a warm smile for her hoping his reassurance would start to have an affect on the woman.

reaper dragged Corvus to kana and Viper. he put his rifle down on the ground next to him and tried to rip it apart from where Corvus head was.
the web was pretty strong and he would not be able to rip it apart with his hands so instead he took out his knife from his chest plate and started carefully cut of the cocoon so he didnt accidently cut Corvus.

luckily it worked and made a small hole infront of Corvus face then he carefully started ripping it with his hands and get her head free. when he was done and could see her face then he kept on cutting down to the body carefully nothing hitting her.

when he was done reaper looked at Corvus and said "you ok?" he took her hand then pulled her out of the cocoon and lifted her.
he put Corvus down next to kana and and said "rest for a couple of minutes, its not your fault for what just happend, in battle everything can happen." he looked thro the visor of his helmet at Corvus checking she was ok then looked at Viper and Kana. "how i she Viper?"

Kana turned her head away as VlPER approached. His words fell on deaf ears; she was still wrapped up in her own mind. That creature had been massacred without hesitation. At the time all she had been thinking of was to have it suffer at her hands. She wanted it to feel it all as its life slowly faded. She had felt a bloodlust that was only cut short by the roof coming down upon the rest of them. What if she hadn’t been stopped? What then?

“Kana, look at me.”

Her eyes strayed away from her friend before slowly yet hesitantly setting themselves on his nose in order to avoid direct eye contact.

“Kana. You’re ok. You did well.”

She shook her head, he didn’t know.

“N-no, I really didn’t, VlPER.” Kana buried her face in the palms of her hands before slowly dragging them towards her sides. “I just slaughtered that thing in cold blood, I wanted it to suffer.”

"She fine!" He said quickly to the trooper before turning his wrapped attention back to Kana.

Viper frowned and planted a few firm pats to the side of her face to get her attention and get her to focus on him. "Yes. Yes you did." He said confirming his own opinion, and denying hers. "You protected your friends. And you didn't do so by slaughtering helpless beings. You did so, by killing an animal who was just as mercilessly trying to kill you all, and eat you. It wasn't done in cold blood. Not by a long shot."

He paused as he gave thought on her last comment. His tone became soft, and encouraging. "As for wanting something that is attacking you and those you care about to suffer...well. That is only natural. It isn't right. But it's only natural. And we are still only padawans. We still have much to learn. To be a good Jedi though, you can't fall to pieces because you made a mistake. You own up to your mistake, as you have done now. And then you learn to never do it again. Learn to control your feelings, so that they don't control you."

He gave a quick look around the cave before looking back to Kana. In a lowered tone no more than whisper, he decided to confide in her. "You don't know this...but my entire family was slaughtered. Half of them in cold blood." His own words began to get caught in his throat as he averted his own eyes for a moment. "Trust me...wh....when I say, what you did today was not done in cold blood." Returning his eyes to hers, he just stared for a moment and then continued in a whisper. "And...I assure you. It is possible to love and care for someone...or multiple people for that matter. And still maintain control. It just takes work." Viper gave her another warm smile, and rose. As he did, he cast a quick glance toward Corvus as she was being helped out of her cacoon. Turning to Kana, he held out his hand. And in a firm, but still encouraging tone, he asked plainly.

"So are you a Jedi, or are you not?"

[member="Kana Truden"] | [member="Corvus Raaf"] | [member="J.Reaper"] | [member="Tugoro Taidarious"]

Corvus was pleased with the assessment of her health from VlPER and the fact that he and the trooper were talking about her like she wasn’t there.

“Yes, I’m fine,” she said as she rubbed her face with the palms of her hands before standing up. “And thanks trooper – quick thinking.”

She was only then aware that VlPER was with Kana – and although she didn’t look injured – he was acting as though she was.

A cursory glance of their surroundings and Corvus looked back at VlPER and Kana. They seemed fine enough. A few dead arachnids but no other casualties. Using the Force she checked for any other life forms nearby but could sense none.

“Trooper. Could you ask your team to dispose of these,” she waved her hand at the spiders. “And keep an eye out for more. Once we enter the cave up there, we’ll be pretty focused and we’ll rely on you to have our backs.” She put a hand on his armoured shoulder. “And I meant it – good work.”

“OK. We have two choices. Wait and regroup – and risk more of those coming back, or press on into the crystal cave. I vote for the latter. It’s not getting any warmer.”

Corvus was aware that her ring had fallen onto the ground during the altercation and so she picked it up and shoved it back into her pocket.

Reaper looked at the padawan and smiled a bit inside his helmet. then he stood up and said to Corvus " copy that miss, i will take care of those still alive" he picked up his rifle and raised it and started shooting and attacking the last couple of arachnids still alive. he killed about 4 spiders but missed one since he didnt notice that one of the spiders was above him so it jumped on him. reaper hit his head pretty hard on the ground but luckily his helmet helped him. the spider got untop of him, and reaper tried to get his rifle up but the arachnid hit it with one of its legs so he could not shot at it. the arachnid tried to bite him but reaper grabbed the spiders fangs keeping it from biting him and probably killing him. he grabbed his knife and stabbed it in the head then he put his legs under its stomach and kicked it of him. he got up and then charged at spider with the knife stabbing its body and head. when reaper was done he got up and looked at his armor seeing blood all over him, he put his knife back and then walked to the rifle and picked it back up. he put his flash light on checking if the cave was clear. when he could not see anything he activated his holo map checking just in case. he saw red blips disappearing from the map so he smiled in relief that they where pulling back. reaper sat down and leaned to on of the walls and while sitting down he took of his helmet and put it down on his left side then pulled out a pack of smokes from his back pocket and then took out a lighter. reaper took one of the cigaretts and put it in his mouth then lighted it. he inhaled hold it for a couple of seconds then blew out. "hate spiders" he took another drag from the cigarett and blew out.

“Yeah.” Kana grabbed VlPER’s hand and pulled herself up. “We should get out of h-“

Her attention shifted over to the soldier as he battled the spider. She would have acted if not for her body freezing up at both the surprise attack and the spider providing it. She never were afraid of spiders but it seems liked that had changed, funny how things work.

The grueling fight was over soon enough, as the soldier took a victory smoke Kana quietly walked away from the area to put some distance between her and the spiders. Corvus had said the crystal cave was up ahead, it was probably in their best interests to get there before the any other nasty threat comes back to get them.

She had to clear her mind or at least calm down. This was no mindset for her to be in; there were no spiders anymore, no attacks to be afraid of. At least that’s what she told herself to calm her nerves. It worked, if only a little as she found herself at a comfortable difference from where the others were. That is, it was a zone comfortable enough to wait for the others to enter the cave.

Corvus’ advice echoed through her mind still.

”Train yourself to let go... of everything you fear to lose.”

It was words that Kana hadn’t truly understood until now.
