Can Kylo Ren be redeemed? [Spoilers 4 TFA!]

[member="Triam Akovin"]

I just looked back at what I said and I realized it sounded incredibly douchey, I'm sorry!

Anyway, we kinda started talking about Rey, and in my post I was saying that it's possible that a past-Force spirit was communicating with her after she touched the lightsaber THROUGH the midichlorians. Which tbh I don't think it takes away any of the mystery of the Force at all, since the Midichlorians aren't the force itself to my knowledge. They are more of a conduit and a way of measuring it IMO. I think it helps because it explains why some people could use the force and some couldn't in the OT, why some didn't even believe in it etc.

[member="Farr Benisho"] Wasn't really douchey, you just had a different opinion, and over looked the jokey aspect of it :p

Though I don't think that a force spirit needs to communicate with her through midichlorians when he/she could just say... use the force? Which is another thing that bothers me about midichlorians - How do spirits even exist in the force if there is nothing being used as a conduit for their force energy, as you said the midichlorians acted as? It just makes something messier, that should have stayed a relative mystery. It didn't need further explanation, it simple was, and that was okay.

I like to think that Rey just has some kind of affinity for pychometry like Quinlin Voss, as mentioned earlier.

Still, I think that Kylo Ren, for the sake of diverging from the typical star wars storyline, should not be redeemed. That is my conclusion.

"In a way, such a turning from one's nature is cowardly, a betrayal of the self... Redemption is a form of spiritual collapse, a fall few recover from."

But yes, I'm sure it will probably happen.

To make a somewhat more serious post -

The problem is that they have illustrated Kylo Ren from the very beginning to be a "torn" character. He was obviously very emotionally conflicted throughout the whole movie and killing Han was a great struggle for him. So they've set him up to be someone who could potentially be redeemed, and this is only going to become greater as the series goes on because I'm sure it will eventually be revealed that Rey and Kylo are somehow related (cousins, most likely). They obviously did this to mimic Darth Vader's story of redemption.

The thing is, it won't work. Kylo killing Han was not equivalent to Vader killing Obi-Wan, even though this is obviously what they were going for due to Episode VII's lock-step imitation of Episode IV. But unlike Obi-Wan, who became a beloved character essentially because he died, Han Solo was one of the most popular characters, if not the most, in the entire saga. As such, I doubt that most fans *want* to see Kylo get redeemed after this. The fact that he killed Han just directs too much bad blood towards Kylo. This goes for the characters as well. Luke and Leia basically barely knew Obi-Wan at the time of his death. He was just some weird old monk who was helping them out. Finn and Rey might not have known Han Solo very well, but how would Luke and Leia feel about Han's murderer being "redeemed"? I doubt they'd accept that.

Not only that, but Kylo Ren is no Darth Vader to begin with. As I said, from the beginning Kylo has been illustrated as an emotionally deranged "emo kid" basically, which is why so many people reacted negatively to his character. By contrast, Darth Vader started off as a stone cold badass and earned the adoration of millions. In fact, there were no doubt many kids who actually rooted for Darth Vader over everyone else in Episode IV, because he was the coolest character! It was only later that his personal story got revealed.

In short, redeeming Kylo Ren won't work. Disney had two choices - make him a deranged psychopath that is completely beyond the pale or a militant badass who has fallen victim to his ideals and is open to redemption. Instead they tried to combine the two by copying the Vader story with an extra twist, and it failed.

This...so much this.

I just hope Disney hears the fans on this one, they've been pretty receptive to what the fans want so far at least with Rebels and such, or maybe that's just Dave Filoni.

As long as they build him up to be an awesome evil first meh why not.
Vader was 'redeemed' because he fulfilled the prophecy, he restored the balance, a balance that has started to slid to and fro again. The Galaxy still hated him, he didn't turn into an angel over night. In fact you'd probably find that in most people's opinions Vader died during the Death Star II's destruction, a duel with Luke would not be public knowledge.

With Kylo I think it'll be a series of darker paths. Basically from the start we've always had bad guys who are... Boom hi I am strong lets fight...oh no you cut me in half and I fell down a pit, its okay though Dave Filoni loves me...
Having a villain they can build up over three movies is a godsend. It will make that final moment all the more sweeter and if he does come back to the light then like Vader it will be knowledge only to those who are involved to the utmost personal level. The Galaxy will still think he is an ego. He won't loose the fringe cut overnight.
