In the heart of the Shadow Temple, under the dim glow of ancient luminaries, the vast sparring arena pulsated with anticipation. This was no ordinary training ground; it was a crucible of skill and a testament to the warrior spirit of the Jedi Order. The high, vaulted ceiling arched over the arena like the canopy of a primordial forest, and the buzz of eager young Jedi hung in the air. They had gathered to Learn from the Master—Caltin Vanagor—prepare them for the intricate dance of the martial art known as Broken Gate.

Caltin, a name spoken in reverent whispers throughout the galaxy, entered the arena with an assured grace. A Jedi Master of exceptional repute and famed as a “one-man wrecking crew,” he had helped liberate worlds from tyranny and righted countless wrongs. But today, he stood not as a warrior of might but as a teacher bent on imparting wisdom to the next generation.

The young Jedi, those who had arrived already, stood hopeful yet nervous, finding solace in his presence. Some had heard tales of him single-handedly taking on battalions of droids and emerging relatively unscathed; others revered him for his compassion and patience. There was also the story of his cybernetic eyes, his affinity for powerful lightning, also surviving his head being literally scalped. Here, though, they would learn the importance of humility and discipline through Broken Gate.

Caltin took a position at the center of the arena, Training Droids lining the outer walls, and his gaze swept over his audience, his piercing emerald eyes locking onto each apprentice. Welcome, young Jedi, he spoke, his voice deep and resonant, echoing against the walls. Today, we will explore Broken Gate—a martial art that teaches both offense and defense in perfect harmony. Harmony, that is a word you need to remember, as this is not going to teach you “fighting”. If you are here to “throw hands”... fee free and go to the dining hall, help yourself to as much food and drink as you like and wait for the next transport, there will be no hard feelings.

The assembled students shifted, their anticipation crackling in the air like static electricity. Caltin began to move, demonstrating a fluid sequence that illuminated the essence of Broken Gate. The motions flowed through him like water—each strike and block shaped by the targeted application of strength and finesse. He flowed through imaginary foes, and with each movement, he appeared to weave a tapestry of invisible threads that painted a masterpiece of combat.

This, he began, is not just about fighting; it is about understanding the deeper rhythm of conflict. Every external strike you deliver must mirror the internal peace you hold. Broken Gate teaches us to break through the barriers of our own limitations while simultaneously respecting those of others.

As he resumed his stance, the young Jedi could feel the weight of his words. Each lesson was laden with meaning, and they were enwrapped in the aura of something greater than mere combat.

Now, he continued, let us delve into the teachings of Broken Gate more thoroughly. He turned his gaze toward each padawan, his voice softening. This art is rooted in three fundamental principles: Intention, Breathing, and Connection.

As he spoke the first tenet, Caltin lifted his hand and demonstrated a simple strike with precision—a glowing beam of energy erupting from the hilt of his lightsaber. The image was striking; with his movements, he illustrated how intention defined purpose. When you strike with purpose, you create openings in your opponent’s defenses. However, intention must never be rooted in anger. It must flow from the depths of your connection to the Force.

With every word, Caltin drew the apprentices into the heart of his lesson. He moved amidst them, demonstrating his prowess, but also inviting them to feel the energy that sparked from his presence alone.

Next is Breathing. A Jedi’s true strength lies not only in their limbs but in mastering the breath that fuels those motions. Your breathing cultivates focus and clarity. It calms the storm within when conflicts rage around you. He paused, allowing them all to follow his example—slow, deliberate inhales and exhales that matched the rhythm of their hearts.

As the young Jedi practiced, individual struggles flickered across their faces. Some mastered the technique swiftly, while others stumbled. This, Caltin knew, was part of their journey. It was critical for them to confront their limitations and push through the barriers they self-imposed.

Finally, Caltin leaned closer to the young apprentices, his expression earnest. Connection—this is at the core of Broken Gate. It is the understanding that you are part of something far greater than yourself. When connected with your opponent, you see not the enemy before you but the challenges they face. In their weakness lies your strength, and in your kindness lies their redemption.

He beckoned two apprentices forward, eager to embrace the teachings. As they engaged in a friendly spar, their movements mirrored Caltin’s earlier demonstration, albeit a little more awkwardly. Observing closely, he guided them with gentle advice and corrections. As they battled, the audience watched, their collective breaths suspended, each of them enraptured by the display of skill intertwined with compassion.

Time passed, the light casting elongated shadows across the arena. The lesson unfolded with fervor, and one apprentice, Aeliana, struggled against her partner. She faltered, frustration painting her features. Caltin stepped in, graceful as a wisp of wind.

Aeliana, he said softly as he placed a hand on her shoulder, remember the principle of Breathing. It grounds you in clarity. When you give in to frustration, you lose connection—not just with your opponent but with your own discipline.

Caltin demonstrated a flow of basic movements, embodying the spirit of Broken Gate, and Aeliana watched with eyes wide in realization. She closed her eyes, inhaled deeply, and tuned into the rhythm of the arena. Moments later, they resumed the spar, and with newfound clarity and connection, she impressed those around her, weaving seamlessly through strikes.

You know what? Let me demonstrate the core of what Broken Gate is about. Jedi are about “defense”, are we not? This art uses your momentum, size, and skills against you. Looking over towards one of the walls, and finding a particular Knight standing watch. Come on over and attack me.

dc-injustice-2-mobile-black-adam-reveal-trailer-dc-izfr7cxbg_82bm.2560.png

That individual was none other than Connel Vanagor, who was in full gear. He laughed. That’s what you wanted me to hang out for?? Alright.

Connel knew what his father wanted and moved in at a fast attack, grabbing a strong hold of Caltin’s shoulder. The big man grabbed his hand, pulled the Knight over his body to the floor and moved into a controlling position moving or “locking” the arm at the joint in full extension.

With the right training, and in the right situation, you can incapacitate an opponent non-lethally, even without throwing a punch. Getting up to a standing position. He looked around, as Connel was playfully adjusting his arm from a seated position. Let’s start with some basic loosening up, what I showed you earlier. We’ll move into this slowly and then get into “velocities”.

In the shadow of the temple, Caltin Vanagor stood, a silent sentinel of knowledge, having infused their spirits with an indomitable light. The arena, once a mere ground of competition, had transformed into a forge for heroes—warriors not just of combat, but of peace.

When Azurine had heard the Old Man was teaching a martial arts class of all things, she knew instantly she had to attend. It was not an opportunity she planned on missing, even if she had to blow off some other things to get there. Though she had to push through the weakness that had started in her muscles, and she hoped that the dark bags under her eyes and the slight discoloration of her skin wasn't as noticeable as she feared it was, she stood at the Shadow Temple ready to give everything she had.

What she hadn't expected was for this class to be focused on defense. Rather than make her want to leave, it only further piqued her curiosity. Iridonian Martial Arts was so very focused on being as brutal as possible, even when it was being fluid and defensive. A wide grin spread across her face at the realization of just how much she could take away from this. She knew this wouldn't necessarily be easy for her, given how it seemed to be an elemental opposite of all the training she'd had in her lifetime, which only made her more interested as the time ticked by. Her attention was intently focused on every word Master Caltin spoke.

Despite how eager she was, she held her tongue until she finally found a moment to ask her questions after the demonstration itself. "So what's the history behind these techniques?" She asked quickly, knowing that the history of a combat art was just as important to learning and understang it as the movements themselves.

Roman approached the sparring arena, his heart thrumming with excitement. Today was different. Today, Master Caltin, a venerated figure whose teachings combined wisdom and combat prowess, would be demonstrating the form known as Broken Gate, a hand-to-hand technique that emphasized defense over aggression.

Roman's enthusiasm for martial arts had blossomed during his training, especially after their recent invasion on Tython. Roman had a healthy respect for Master Caltin and after successfully navigating his flying class on various ships within the temple's expansive grounds, he knew that this session would deepen his understanding of a combat style that resonated with him. The defensive nature of Broken Gate intrigued him, it held a certain grace, a fluid elegance, which to Roman, felt more akin to an art form than mere fighting.

As he stood around the arena, Roman's gaze sharpened on the duo occupying the center of the circle. Master Caltin moved with a confidence that was both fluid and imposing, effortlessly demonstrating each aspect of the technique against a practice partner he recognized from their fleeting encounter on the moon of Bogan. It was reassuring to see that the man had emerged relatively unscathed from their brief previous encounter.

Just then, a voice interrupted his contemplation, filling the air with a curious question about the history of the Broken Gate technique. Roman turned his attention towards an Iridonian woman standing nearby. She was new, Roman hadn't recognized her from anywhere. Roman sensed a faint aura of determination and curiosity emanating from her. He studied her for a moment longer, intrigued yet unacquainted, before returning his focus to the demonstration.

Master Caltin's voice echoed in the arena as he prepared to field the inquiry about the technique, and Roman felt a thrill pass through him. He had come here not only to observe but to absorb the wisdom and insights that would help him grow. But as he glanced back at the Iridonian, he made a mental note to watch her progress throughout the class. Perhaps in doing so, he might learn more about her.

When word spread around about another form of martial art being taught by a different master, Caelan immediately had interest. Even though he was learning one from Azzie already, he knew that knowing more could be of benefit. He wanted to be a master of many things. He wanted to know everything he could about combat so that he could meet the expectations of the Master he idolized and then exceed them, becoming even greater than they were. Not for his own benefit. Not for his own legend. No, he did it for Arhiaa and for his people.

So when he wandered in and saw Azzie there, he wasn't really surprised. He even spotted Roman in the room. He lifted a hand in greeting to the both of them. The former he definitely knew better than the latter, but he was aware of Roman's connection to his adoptive sister now, so he figured he should probably be polite with him whenever they were in the same vicinity. Not that he wouldn't be polite, but he was obligated to be more so.

He stood near the both of them and listened as the Master who was teaching them spoke, and utilized another Jedi to demonstrate what he was intending to teach them. Caelan paid very close attention to everything the master said and did, almost completely ignoring everyone else. So much so, he almost didn't hear Azzie ask her question, but he did hear it, and he was curious as well about what the answer would be. Regardless, he settled for starting the warm up exercises that the man had instructed them to do, before catching Roman watching Azzie.

"Her name is Azurine Varek," he whispered to him after moving closer. "She's teaching me Iridonian Martial Arts. Very skilled."

Today, we will explore Broken Gate—a martial art that teaches both offense and defense in perfect harmony.... This,is not just about fighting; it is about understanding the deeper rhythm of conflict. Every external strike you deliver must mirror the internal peace you hold. Broken Gate teaches us to break through the barriers of our own limitations while simultaneously respecting those of others.

Zaiya leaned forward, datapad in hand, eyes wide as she absorbed every word. She'd arrived early, snagging a front spot, determined to focus. She had even dressed in consideration for sparring, opting to dress in a way that would leave her arms free and have as few restrictions as possible to ensure she kept good form. The extent of the shimmering constellations of mottled spots and stripes was free to be seen, igniting over her rosy golden skin in a star map of colorful glowing ombres and hues. A few others had joined, some familiar faces scattered around the room, but right now, Zaiya had her attention locked on the lesson.

This particular style fascinated her. The idea of finding balance, of grounding each move in internal peace, resonated deeply with her -- though a flicker of worry stirred. Each strike was meant to carry harmony. But what if she hadn't mastered her emotions enough? She was still training with Master Iris, learning to control herself, especially when her bioluminescence gave her feelings away for anyone to see. The display of color and luminence felt beautiful, something she really enjoyed showing off; it was just… inconvenient when others could tell she was embarrassed or frustrated. Out on a mission, she didn't want her emotions to be an open book for anyone to read.

With a deep, calming breath, Zaiya turned her attention back to the spar between Master Vanagor and Knight Vanagor, watching their practiced movements flow. They radiated a calm focus, each breath in sync, each strike balanced and nonlethal. Her datapad flashed with notes: Harmony, breathing techniques, grounding in clarity… and a way to incapacitate without harm.

Even better, she thought, eyes gleaming as she watched the graceful exchange. This was Jedi skill at its finest. And with any luck, it'd be one more step toward finding her own balance -- on the inside and out.

And learn more ways to keep up with His Highness.

The training didn't seem to stop, as it shouldn't. Aiden heard word of the class focusing the martial arts and form called the Broken Gate. Through all of his readings and time spent in the archives that fact that he missed this, showed more of his naïve side. Something he missed or wasn't paying enough attention. Perhaps some hidden technique, that only a few have learned. Nevertheless this was something need for the Jedi Padawan. They never stopped learning, and they day that they decided to stop.

Ignorance would prevail that day.

Caltin Vanagor Caltin Vanagor was hosting the class and he was held in high esteem by Aiden. His wisdom and even martial prowess overall was indeed something to strive for. Like the flying lessons before which Aiden took with Master Vanagor. He was quite eager to join and learn as much as he could. Fortunately he arrived on time, unlike the last lesson. He noted a few that were there from previous classes that he had.

He gave a small smile and nod towards those that were assembled. In particular Zaiya and Roman, while doing the same with the rest. He had seen them but never had the pleasure to completely meet them yet. Today seemed like that perfect time, perhaps within the lesson as interactions would take place.

The introduction began and Aiden listened attentively to the descrption of the form and further more instruction on its values. And soon seeing that come full circle as Master Vanagor demonstrated against a fellow Jedi and the precision and timing of each move with quite amazing.

Raphael stepped back from the forge that he'd been working at, for the last few hours. He'd already gotten one blade made from some of the songsteel, he'd been allowed to keep, and now he was working on a second. But the work, in this case, was much harder than he'd thought. It wasn't like working with a lightsaber and crystal. Those parts had already been machined, more or less, and he simply needed to put them together. In comparison, making a whole new blade, an entire weapon, from the songsteel that was already able to absorb heat... Well, Raphael was barely able to stand how much heat that he needed to use. The sweat practically evaporated off of him.

The durasteel warped again, as he hammered away at it and, in a moment of frustration at his lack of progress, Raphael sighed and sat down the tools. Looking over the warped durasteel, he began to wonder what was wrong with his work. He'd been able to get it right with the last sword, when combining the songsteel and the durasteel for the handle... He'd give it a while... and then come back.

Raphael changed from his smock and tunic into his jacket and shirt, again and he went on a walk.

As he was doing so, he heard a very familiar voice, coming from a sparring ring. He chuckled. Of course it was Caltin. Raphael remembered from the very first time, when he'd helped out the Alliance... While part of the coquers and honors said to conquer curiosity... well, he couldn't help himself and he needed to do something other than hammer out more songsteel, before he lost his mind... Thus, slowly, as things were picking up, Raphael slowly made his way inside and readied himself for what he'd heard about being called the "Broken Gate".

The idea of visiting the Shadow Temple had been alluring from the moment he heard about the lesson; the thought of learning from the Jedi Master, whose stature seemed as though it could rival one of the towering trees here on Kashyyyk was exciting. Not to mention, the idea of escaping the surroundings of Coruscant that never slept was a pleasant thought. While he enjoyed everything the capital planet had to offer and was satisfied with what he was learning at the academy, he occasionally yearned for something far beyond the busy city life.

The padawan found himself near some of the others who had arrived for the lesson as well, though there was still a small enough distance to leave him isolated. It didn’t take much for Lysander to lose his train of thought, and the briefest of conversations could steer his focus in a different direction altogether.

His training apparel was crafted from the finest of lightweight materials, draping over his athletic flame, ones that allowed for more fluid movement when he so often practiced his lightsaber forms. Both pants and tunic were of a deep indigo, as though it was a subtle nod to his lineage, the very hue a reflection of the beautiful lakes one might find on Naboo. A leather belt complemented the look, showcasing his curved-hilt lightsaber, hinting at his preferred form, Makashi, known for its elegance that naturally suited his demeanor.

While Lysander mainly desired wisdom to primarily handle situations with both empathy and understanding, he also wanted the strength to be able to confront any situation should it be necessary. The very color of his blade suggested such a path. And he was certain that Caltin Vanagor Caltin Vanagor would be the right teacher for this. He was eager to absorb any knowledge he could.

When the giant spoke of creating openings in the opponent's defense through purpose, it did vaguely remind him of Makashi, though he was certain it was meant to deliver a much more meaningful message. As he spoke about breathing, he slowly inhaled a deep breath, followed by an exhale, grounding himself in the moment. It felt natural, since the boy was already sitting on the ground in the lotus position. He also noticed that it did help with his focus, no doubt something that took constant effort to maintain. After a moment of self-reflection upon the word connection, he slowly pushed himself up from the ground.

Naturally, he found himself twisting his torso, seeking mobility in his hips. His arms swung freely. Emerald orbs flicked towards the Zabrak girl that posed a question, confident that he recognized her to be the same one from a trip to Ilum where they searched for a kyber crystal. From there, his gaze slowly shifted to some of the other students while taking in the surroundings, along with a warm and welcoming smile that rested upon his youthful features.

Combat was something Aris lived and breathed. There was nothing more natural to the boy, nothing that had his interest more. His goal to become a battlemaster, it was born from this interest. So, naturally, he'd be here. He stood off to the side, hands clasped behind his back as he listened to Master Vanagor. The rhythm of battle. It felt very Epicanthic already, but he doubted they were the same.

And, well, he kept his focus ahead because he could already tell who else was here. Try as he might to hide it, he knew her just by her heartbeat alone. And now the back of his neck was burning an ever faint shade of red in his blush. He'd admitted a lot to her.

He wasn't sure what else to say about it yet. But he knew he wasn't going to interrupt her learning, at least.

Ryana stood there listening to caltin explain broken gate she came here so pip and buster could have play connel had convinced her to come and learn this fighting style. From connels description and the sounds of it this wasn't going to be the best fit for her the wilders pyrokinesis was a better fit drawing on her emotions of love and wanting to protect people this a non-lethal fighting style had its uses but on most battlefields against most of the alliances enemies non lethal wouldn't work.

She knew that way of thinking was against the jedi code and the general views of the jedi and her way of thinking was painted by her past. But she knew evil when she saw it and the best way to deal with evil was to destroy it in her opinion but connel suggested she be here so there she stood listening and watching.

Having seen what he needed to see, the big man knew who would do well with this, and who was going to struggle. Most of them seemed to be almost defeated at learning this, as if they seemed more interested in “throwing hands” than learning something that could save their lives. That was an unfortunate sign of the times, and he would not hold it against them, not their fault. What he did not like was speaking out of turn… and who else was the one to do so but “Ice Cream.”

Okay, One thing about me that not all of you know yet. I always give plenty of time for questions to ask, I only ask that you wait until I call for them. Alright? Now, to answer your question, this dates back to the earliest days of the Order. When lightsabers were not entirely reliable, a Jedi needed to be able to control a crowd. He waved over at Connel, who at this point was finishing pulling up his flightsuit, a classic “X-Wing” style flightsuit.

Laughing Master! I have to go! He did not protest though, Connel knew, again, what his father needed from him and went to “shoot” on the bigger man, dropping his head and charging. Caltin sidestepped and grasped the younger Vanagor’s side.

dc-injustice-2-mobile-black-adam-reveal-trailer-dc-izfr7cxbg_82bm.2560.png

Yes, this does consist of strikes, but there are throws… He said as he used leverage and his obvious strength to throw Connel to the ground with a thud and an “ooof” from the younger. ... and stomps… He said as he now had his left foot resting on Connel’s chest.[/COLOR] Stepping back and helping his son up, Caltin mouthed the words “thank you, fantastic work” to him as the younger went back to where he was with a nod. Knight Vanagor… thank you…

Connel just held up a hand in acknowledgment as he looked to the astromech next to him who was balancing a flight helmet on “his” head. With a wink to Ryana, he headed out. Caltin took this moment to walk among everyone.

Forgive my curtness a few moments ago. However, “Self Defense” and “Combat” are subjects that I take very seriously. I will not teach you how to be better fighters. I will not teach you how to hit harder, but what I teach you will, some you ever have to use it, one day save your life.

Making his way back to the center

Pair up. It is time for “velocities” now, this practice is normally done with lightsabers but it is good to use here as well. One of you will be “the attacker” and one will be “the defender”...

When you are paired up… the first “attacker” will attack from above… do so at a walking pace, nice and slow… and the “defender” will sidestep, grab that closest arm and pull it over your body and stop.

Then you will switch and the “defender” will attack and vice versa.

The new “attacker” will shoot on the defender much like Knight Vanagor did towards the midsection of the defender again at a walking pace. The defender will sidestep, grab the opposite hip and the shoulder closest to you and pull enough to shift their weight and stop.

Then switch again.

Then repeat this, but at a little faster pace…

Then repeat the whole thing again a little faster…

… then a little faster…

… a little faster…

… get the idea?

Looking around, he asked. Any questions?

It was time for velocities practice. Zaiya skimmed her notes one last time, committing them to memory before powering off her datapad and slipping it back into her satchel. As she did, she felt that familiar, tingling warmth through the Force, filling her with an ever-growing familiar awareness.

She didn't even have to look to know he was there. It made sense that Aris would be here too. Two years ago, when they'd first met, he'd shared his dream: to become a Jedi Battlemaster, mastering every fighting form and weapon skill he could.

Her heart skipped a beat, and Zaiya's face flamed a bright shimmering coral over her mottled stripes on her cheeks. Even now, she recalled what he told her. There were still things to go through, but she knew that would take time… and well, figuring things out. First things first. She came here for a reason. Not only to train but also to feel as if she was the strongest she could be. She took a calming breath and deliberately activated her mental shields, working on the techniques that Master Iris and Domxite had been teaching her -- to let her emotions flow but not overwhelm her, to keep her colors from bleeding through too brightly in a way she didn't want them to go. It was progress. At least her empathy wasn't spilling over like before, and touching others no longer left a lingering emotional resonance.

Stay calm, Zaiya. Breathe. Focus on harmony, grounding, clarity.

With a quick inhale, she stood up, the toned muscle and sinew she'd earned the past few years giving a subtle flex as she adjusted her topknot to keep her thick, multicolored hair out of the way. Strands of vibrant magenta, cobalt, and teal cascaded over her shoulders before she secured them all back tightly. The knot held, leaving her neck and shoulders bare, like a canvas alive with the shifting colors of her emotions. A palette of rosy gold hues blended into constellations of bioluminescent spots, each ripple hinting at the nerves she was trying to steady.

Alright, she thought, squaring her stance. Time to focus... and find a partner.

With a mix of anticipation and nerves electrifying the air, Roman Vossari stood tall, scanning the room as he awaited his chance to engage in the "velocities".

"Azurine…" he muttered under his breath as Caelan approached him. The name rolled off his tongue like a warning. "Remind me not to get on her bad side then." Roman chuckled softly, the humor providing a relief from the intensity that frequently filled these instuctions.

As Caltin continued to explain the nuances of the exercise, Roman's attention drifted around the room.. He noted the various expressions of determination across the faces of his fellow Padawans. Most of them were familiar, friends forged in the fires of training and camaraderie, but one boy caught his eye. The blonde-haired Padawan radiated an undeniable confidence, his posture regal and poised. Roman felt a flicker of intrigue, here was someone he hadn't yet met, but who reminded him of a younger reflection of himself.

When the moment came for Caltin to call for pairs, Roman seized the opportunity to approach the boy. "Roman Vossari." he introduced himself, extending a hand for a handshake. "Would you like to be my partner for this exercise?" His voice held a mix of enthusiasm and cordiality.

"You can pick first." Roman said, stepping back a little. "Do you want to be the attacker, or would you rather defend?"

Azurine stood in silence for a moment, a little bit confused as to why she was being called out. She'd waited until the demonstration was over, at least she thought. She'd meant absolutely no disrespect, especially not to a man she'd followed —and managed to save the life of— into battle. However, she wasn't a meek child, so his response didn't exactly make her feel embarrassed. It just made her chuckle a little bit under her breath. She should have known the old man would be such a stickler after what she knew of him from Tython, but at least she knew now to be a bit more careful. She couldn't help but poke a little fun, though, flashing him a bit of a sly grin (hoping it wouldn't be marred by the bags under eyes and the palness of her skin) and saluting exactly how she had back then when he'd laid his ground rules for her, "Yes, Master!"

She scribbled a few notes on a small datapad when he explained the history, knowing she would very likely read up on it in the library as well. Waiting for the instructions to end and listening intently, she caught Caelan and Roman out of the corner of her eye watching her. She found herself moving over, only catching the latter part of what he'd said.

"... not to get on her bad side then."

She immediately went over to put Caelan in a surpise, but gentle and clearly playful, headlock, ruffling his hair with her free hand, "I hope you're not talking chit, little lion cub," she joked, grinning at them both, "I heard about what you did on Onderon. I knew you had it in you!" She was clearly proud of him, and hoped the encouragement would help with moving forward today as well. Turning her attention to Roman, she gave a quick nod and a two finger salute, "You're Annie's guy, right? Well, as long as you treat her right, you and I will get along just fine, don't worry. Talk later, yeah?"

And with that, she was gone, violet eyes scanning the room once again to find a partner. And for a moment, they locked directly with Zaiya's. Perfect, she'd wanted to get to know her better anyway since she was clearly so important to Aris. Just like with Roman, anyone who was that important to someone she was close to was important to her as well, so it was about time they made a connection.

"Hey Zaiya! Want to partner up with me on this one?" She asked, heading over with a playful fire in her eyes. Her aura definitely gave off her genuine desire to just enjoy whatever came of it.

"I would advise you don't," he said in agreement with Roman's sentiment.

And then he was busy paying attention to what the Master and Knight were showing them about attacking and throwing. Velocities, he called it. This made sense to him. It was all about using the attacker's momentum against them. If they attacked, you moved to the side and used their body as a level to "toss" them off balance. It was definitely a different style from what Azzie had been teaching him, but he could see the merits of it. Learning all of this would just make him a more formidable fighter.

But before he could pick someone out to spar with, he found himself in a headlock. Which was impressive since she was shorter than him.

"Cut it out, short stack. I just told him your name and that you were teaching me Iridonian martial arts. And I failed on Onderon, so let's not bring that up."

His mood went south real quick when she mentioned Onderon. He'd staved off one attacker, and done a fair bit of damage to another, but he'd also suffered a broken arm, and the Queen had been killed. That, to him, was failure. He reached up and pushed her hands away. Proud as she might be, for him it was not something to be proud of, but something to learn from. That being said, he needed to find a partner, and since Azzie was moving towards someone else, and Roman was doing the same, he needed to pick a different partner.

Looking around the room, he spotted a handful of people he didn't yet know, but settled on Aiden Porte Aiden Porte and headed over towards him. Offering his hand as he approached, he did his best to smile despite his internal disappointment with himself.

"Hello. I'm Caelan Valoren. Would you like to partner up?"

Lysander listened carefully to the exchange between the two Jedi before witnessing the Master effortlessly put the other on the ground. It was then he learned the name of one, Knight Vanagor, who also made a gesture with one of his eyes right before leaving. Time seemed to freeze for the Padawan; curiosity bubbled within, eyes widening. He leaned forward, turning his head in an attempt to catch the Twi'lek's reaction, hoping it would help him learn more about the dynamics of whatever was going on.

But just as the instruction continued not even a second later, he didn't want to be noticed, and quickly readjusted his posture.

The message was clear: slow at first, then gradually increase the speed. He understood the importance of this progression, to help build instinct. Or so he thought. That much reminded him of memorizing different lightsaber sequences.

Rolling both shoulders and extending his arms, Lysander tried to imagine grabbing someone's arm during this ‘velocity’ drill. Excitement buzzed through him. He began shifting his weight from one foot to the other. Every bounce was full of energy.

He felt a rush of warmth when receiving an unexpected invitation from another who appeared to be a few years older. "Let's do it!" With a slight nod of his head, he accepted the handshake. His own grip was firm. "Lysander von Ascania," he replied with a joyful tone. Tilting his head back to meet the teenager’s gaze, he could also feel positivity radiating from the taller Padawan’s friendly demeanor. "It’s nice to meet you, Roman." There was a brief pause as he contemplated the options. “I don’t mind attacking first,” he continued. A hint of a smile played at the corners of his mouth.

He began to distance himself before turning to face his partner, eyes scanning the room to see some who were also partnering up and others still searching. This meant they would probably be the first in the room to engage in the drill. While he wasn’t shy, he didn’t want to be the center of attention in case he made a mistake. But with a final nod, and just as instructed, he would attempt to mimic what he saw earlier from Vanagor. At a walking pace, he lowered his head as though he were charging, aiming for Roman’s midsection as he drew closer.

"Hey Zaiya! Want to partner up with me on this one?"

It was a good thing Zaiya had thought to put up her mental and empathic shields earlier, or her flustered reaction might've radiated out in all directions. Instead, only a faint ripple of pale greys and soft yellows drifted over her skin -- subtle enough that only someone who knew her well might catch it.

She turned her gaze purposefully to where she'd spotted Azurine Varek Azurine Varek . A fresh wave of embarrassment flared in her mind as she remembered what she'd confessed to Aris about her feelings toward the Iridonian girl. It had only fueled her determination to get better at hand to hand combat.

"Good morning, Azzie. How are you doing?" Zaiya greeted, forcing a small, friendly smile. You wanted this, she reminded herself. Who better to spar with than Azurine, after all?

"Alright, let's get started," she said, feeling a surge of focus as citrine hues dappled with cobalt spread down her cheeks and arms, determination blazing through her.

"Do you want to be the attacker or the defender?" Zaiya asked, keeping her gaze steady and very intentionally not glancing over at Aris Noble Aris Noble . No distractions -- she'd need all her focus if she wanted to show she could hold her own.

As Lysander lowered his head and lunged forward, Roman slowly executed the move just as Caltin had showed. There was something invigorating about the newness of this form, the fresh energy coursing through the room as the various pairs began to engage in their drills. With a swift step to the left, he sidestepped Lysander's advance, the young boy's exuberance palpable as he movedtoward Roman's midsection.

Roman reached out, grasping Lysander's closest arm with a steady grip. With a quick pivot of his body, he pulled the arm over his own body, effectively executing the maneuver. There was a satisfaction in executing the move as Caltin had instructed, a sense of the flow of combat that was infectious.

"Nice!" Roman said, his voice upbeat, though he could sense a hint of hesitation in his partner's initial attack. He was determined to keep the energy high and to encourage Lysander. As they prepared to switch roles, the air buzzed with a competitive spirit that seemed to amplify with each pairing, and Roman was eager to rise to the challenge. He had tried to partner up early, hoping to sharpen his skills before the rest of the class figured out who they wanted to partner with just in case Caltin called for a competition towards the end of the day.

After several rounds of practice, as the speed increased, Roman remembered something as he rolled with Lysander, curiosity glimmering in his eyes. "Von Ascania?" he inquired. "Any relation to Cora?" He thought back to his recent mission to Ukatis, when him and Cora had shared stories and bonded over their similar upbringings. "I didn't know she had any siblings or cousins training here."

Aiden watched the exchange between father and son. Movements and such were seemingly perfect in his opinion. Those coming from Master Vanagor, Aiden sympathized with Connel as he was getting thrown around like he was doll. Granted it was all to show what the form was about. Still, Aiden knew he volunteering to be the practice dummy. Unless he was instructed too....

Thus it came time to find a partner. Aiden wasn't too concerned with who his sparring partner was. He glanced around briefly and that was when Caelan was heading his way.

"Hello. I'm Caelan Valoren. Would you like to partner up?"

Aiden showed a small smile and nodded his head. "Good to meet you Caelan, my name is Aiden Porte." The Jedi padawan said extending his hand outwards to shake his. "That sounds like a solid plan. You can be the attacker first."

The Jedi Padawan took a slow deep breath, his mind going over everything that was heard and seen from Master Vanagor today. Trying at best to not look like a total fool, while waiting for Caelan's advance.
