Company tier up tweaks

Streamlining Companies:[
  • Removing development thread requirements from general company rules.
  • Streamlining and revamping Tier Up templates by removing "Misc threads and Major projects development requirements," and instead replace with an "Company Expansion system" that provides similar missions much like those found in Restricted Materials. ( this includes OR clauses)

Tier Upgrade Requirements

Use the following template for your Tier Up requests. Simply select the Tier Up template in the spoiler below for the level you desire and fill in the requirements therein. As always, these numbers are flexible, they are just a general guideline.

Passive Company Expansion Objectives

  • Defend your company, another company, or a faction from a hostile attack
  • Invest in another company or faction

Sponsorship is essentially when a sufficiently large major faction or a Tier 6 Company decides to back your company's endeavors specifically. This can either be by them giving you a large, direct annual subsidy, signing a long-term contract, and other things that would tie the government of that faction or that conglomerate and your company close together. This may be supplemented by a substantial expansion in another way,

Tier V to Tier VI
  • Sign a contract with another two different major factions OR Tier 5+ companies.
  • Display growth through three passive expansions of your company.
  • Display growth through three active expansions of your company.
  • Successfully complete a project of immense proportions.

My main issue with this is that this basically adds more work instead of less work. Which, I think, goes against the point of this entire Factory upheaval?

Right now you can do literally anything as a misc thread as long as it features your company in some prominent way. Expansion of locations, development of items/locations, contracts, business meetings... the sky is literally the limit here. But with this proposal you basically shoe-horn people into doing specific actions, which will be situational and not always available. The task of tier-upping becomes more daunting, instead of less. You box people in with restrictions, instead of letting themselves decide what they want to do with their company tier-up to help grow their company.

This way we aren't making the tier system less tedious and less work, we are just taking their freedom away and forcing them to do one specific thing for each round.

I don't think this will help make the company game more accessible. I actually think it might make it even more intimidating than before.

Full disclosure: I feel very strongly about this, because the company system has been one of my favorite ways to write on Chaos and looking at this now I legitimately got the feeling that it would hamper my process more instead of easing it.

Proposal

I am typing this out mostly because I need to go to my lectures in a few and don't want to forget this.

If the point of this exercise is to draw in more people to start using the company system and making the system less of a burden on our writers this is what we could do that is an easy fix.

  • Reduce the general development necessary for the 'sizeable/major/immense'-project by 50%. Instead of 100, 200, 300, make it [50, 100 and 150] or [50, 100 and 200].
  • Add an alternative option to a major faction sponsorship with a T5+ corporate sponsorship. This way company writers are not at the mercy of frequently unwilling major factions and make it easier for specific-aligned companies to keep doing their thing. Instead of having to compromise just to be able to move through the tiers.
  • Maybe remove one misc thread from the requirements in each tier-up. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 instead of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - though I am not that wild about this one, because misc threads are literally not the issue here.

Okay, but that literally does not fix the problems the users are facing. I have been doing the company stuff for a long time and talked with a lot of people, from newbies to other writers like me... misc threads have never been the issue of the tier up system.

So, sure, we can replace it with fixed missions, but it will just turn into a silly time sink and make it even less likely regular people will tier their company up.

I would remove the terminology "in a thread"

Set goals for expansion and let them provide evidence however they want.

  • Restricted Missions
  • Company Expansion Objectives
That's the terminology I like.

I can see Tai's issue with removing the natural growth of a company. I think we'll need to put some "OR"s in and stay fairly high level

At the moment I'm struggling to come up with more as most of my first thoughts are in the opening post.

[member="Tai Fa"]

How would you describe most of the misc threads you do for expansion as? Can you think of some overarching descriptions that could become challenges? Mostly they're building new business links with customers and suppliers aren't they?

I can remove the post limits to the major project. That's fine and allow it to be a general sort of project.

Rhys has a good idea of it. My intention is to make a massive list of examples that people may pick and choose from.

So please, any ideas on what the bulk of your misc threads are as a suggestion so that we may add it.

Tier I to Tier II
  • Sign a contract with at least one faction or organization (May be NPC).
  • Make at least three minor-production products.
  • Complete two miscellaneous threads.
  • Display growth through passive expansion of your company.
Create a new location submission for headquarters or branches; OR in a public auction sell shares of your company stock; OR Contact a media organization to advertise your company's services or products

[*]Display growth through active expansion of your company.
  • Buyout, merge with, or absorb another company; OR assist in a dominion, invasion, rebellion, or skirmish where your company's services or products are utilized to fulfill an objective; OR create a skirmish against another company to commit corporate sabotage
You can then add more of these passive or active growth missions/expansion quests/whatever you want to call them per tier, and still gives the same kind of direction/guidance while also allowing companies to still show natural growth.

Obviously we could even go as far as to create Passive or Active expansion objective options (in a table or something) as a pool of choices and simply list off tier promotions like so:

Or some other variation of the above two.

I guess I don't see the point thus far? Whereas before you could have 'two miscellaneous threads' which could mean anything, be left up to the judges, and allowed utter freedom, now we have a static list? Or am I misunderstanding? Before I delve into trying to help expand or critique I want to make sure I understand this fully. My heads been buried in pharmacology all day.

Part of removing development threads, as directed from the top of staff down, was that miscellaneous threads have to go. We are, basically, asking for any kind of random RP as long as it includes the company (currently) with no clear direction of what we want. It's freedom of choice for the writer, yes, but it's what we're asking for and why that is the problem.

More or less, we're asking for someone to just churn out RP and we don't care what it is or what's inside of it (hence miscellaneous). It's exactly the same as judging a submission and asking someone to provide a development thread because you're (and I don't literally mean you) not comfortable with the submission and need the development to assure you that they have "earned" it or provided development to warrant whatever it is they're submitting. A miscellaneous thread is to show random, miscellaneous, examples of the company being used in role-play, and doesn't even need to show growth or expansion of the company. It's analogous to asking for random development threads.

The idea behind what we're doing is to still have some form of structured examples of growth from the company's writers while also trying to give them as much freedom as we can, within the constraints of asking for missions/objectives/etc, so as to not turn company tier growth into a Restricted Material-esque list of objectives for each tier promotion.

All use of development thread and post counts are removed, and I have added the formatting of expansion objectives (or whatever you want to call it), in the example above. Feel free to utilize and add more expansion objectives as necessary.
