In glorious flame and a burst of electrical static on his targeting computer he saw the three bogeys closing in on him erupt, blinking from view. Now in the trench the young pilot had gripped the controls even tighter. Nils had to remind himself to breath as his oxygen saturation dropped just enough to trigger the vitals monitor for a second. He grinned. :: Thanks for the cover Alpha Lead. ::
Once more toggling the switches on a command panel the ship shuddered as power was re-routed back to the engines. He was rapidly approaching their target. It took all his concentration to focus on dodging protrusions from the hull on the interior of the trench, bobbing and weaving through the fire coming from several turbolaser batteries mounted on the interior of the trench. If he were to accidentally fly above the edge, he'd be ripped apart by the sheer volume of fire. Dipping low beneath a large chunk of the bulkhead he saw two small blips appear on his scanners for a fraction of a second.
*FETH.*
Making a split second decision he pushed the controls forward, hard. His TIE fought him as he forced it deeper into Omega's trench. The increased power to his engines and quick reflexes had been the only thing that saved him. Behind the nimble starfighter two explosions rippled against the hull of the weapon sending shrapnel into the bottom of the gutter. Apparently there were more than just turbolasers down here. He keyed up quickly as his range detector indicated there was a slight turn in the trench before they would have a clear shot at the objective.
:: Alpha Lead, watch out for missiles, just dodged two that came out of nowhere. ::
Despite the stresses he was facing he kept his voice cool, his professionalism still in tact. They were committed now. So close. He could see the bend ahead. In his peripherals he could see the range finder ticking down as he sped towards the corner. Seconds before he'd have to make the slow left turn he flipped the toggle switch one last time, a short sputter rocking the TIE as the engine cut out. His stomach flipped as the engines seemed to die. Had he miscalculated the load on the ships systems? Certainly could have been but... As he tried to rationalize what had happened, where his calculations had gone wrong his ship's twin engines came back online, albeit weakly. He'd transferred nearly all power to his weapons systems. He wouldn't get a much better chance than this and as his craft came streaking around the wide turn he lined up his craft with the end target.
The readout wasn't exactly clear about what it was exactly that they were supposed to be destroying but it was hard to miss the giant bulge in the Omega's hull. Had the situation been less intense he might have commented on the design, locating such a vital part of the weapon so near to the hull, but he hadn't the luxury. Rather than contemplate a soon to be irrelevant hunk of durasteel and focusing crystals, Nils squeezed both triggers on his control sticks, his weapons linked and overcharged. If he wasn't careful he might blow out his weapon's capacitors but he didn't care, at this range all he needed to do was loosen enough deck plating and punch into the crystal chamber. Even if he wasn't able to finish the job himself, Alpha Squadron would swoop in right behind.
Thick red laser beams arced towards the hull plating, rapidly depleting any shields and punching inward towards their mark. As he was nearly completing his strafing run Nils pressed the large red buttons next to his thumbs. With a violent shudder the TIE launched its remaining torpedo complement directly towards the crystal chamber. As he passed over the objective he had to pull up on the controls sending him up into space, outside of the relative safety of the trench. Almost immediately the defense turrets were locking on to him, he'd lost a lot of speed by adjusting power to his weapons.
*Bohica* he thought to himself.
:: Attack Run Complete, Bravo Lead bugging out! ::
He could feel the laser fire eating away at his rear shields, they wouldn't last long if he didn't get out of range.
"BB, hit it!"
The droid squealed, rapidly applying as much power as it could to the rear shields and engines, disabling the weapons completely. He'd be a sitting duck without his weapons but at least he'd be alive. Now it was up to Alpha Leader and the rest of the pilots, he needed to get out while he still could.
