Did the fish take the bait? [GR dom for Manaan]

Objective E - "patrolling"
Post 5/20

Manaan city was bustling in activity. With the many Republic representatives visiting the merchants of Manaan smelled an opportunity and thus markets had opened up on the fly and as a bonus it drew many natives to the city as well.

Curious eyes followed the visitors and haggling voices were heard all over as Mantic moved to the crowd. He had sensed the presence of his padawans somewhere but the myriad of people made it hard yo navigate.
Besides, he knew he had to stop baby sitting them and allow them to spread their wings. He loved teaching however and to realize that some of his students was ready to fly sat deep inside.

Sighing a smile he made his way to the corner of the main square to get a better overlook over the area in front of the governmental centre where the negotiations were taking place.

He had heard that the republic had sent some pretty important people here for the occasion. The supreme commander [member="Ali Hadrix"] - the minister of intelligence [member="Faith Balor-Organa"] and senators [member="Jack Sparrow"] and [member="Alyesa Organa"]

Hopefully they would reach an agreement in the near future. But everyone were prepared for that this might take time.

Dressed in a simple black bikini, Sofia met her private swimming instructor by the pool. As much as she would had liked to show up and learned to swim in her military uniform, that would have made her look rather odd.

"Hi," she greeted the woman simply. The woman returned her greeting and began the lesson.

The first thing Sofia's instructor had her do was to get her to swim a lap in order for the instructor to see her swimming ability.

"You have poor form," the instructor critiqued Sofia. "No wonder you couldn't swim very far no matter how hard you tried. You haven't even got the basics right." The instructor then had Sofia assume her form as if she was swimming and proceed to correct it.

"Ok, much better. Now try swimming again, this time keeping to the form that I have just showed you." The instructor requested.

Ali ignored the woman's comments regarding the Republic's failures against the One Sith. If she wanted to use that as reason to withhold assistance to the Republic, that was her prerogative. Instead she focused on the kolto fields, which were indeed in the Republic's viewfinder. She nodded as Organa spoke, confirming to the Assembly what the woman was suggesting to be true. "Absolutely," Ali said firmly, her clear voice rang through the hall shortly, followed by silence. "The kolto fields are essential to the war effort; they assist in the healing of our wounded soldiers...and the innocents that are caught in the destruction the Sith seek to bring upon the Galaxy." Ali took a moment to make eye contact with several of the Selkath representatives, allowing her implications to settle in before continuing.
"The Republic did not start this war. The Republic does not continue it. The Republic is not the only target of the Sith. They want sole control of the Galaxy." Ali allowed the exasperation to show on her features momentarily. "Your kolto fields are your planet's primary source of income. You would not deny a paying customer anymore than you would deny a dying civilian access to kolto for survival and healing, would you not? Unless I have judged the Selkath poorly," Ali added. "The Republic is the reason independent worlds like yours remain free; not because of our sacrifice, but because we present a larger target that draws the Sith's attention. Once we are swept aside, worlds like Manaan will be next. Alongside the Republic, Manaan might fall. Without us, she will."

Corvus smiled. “No harm done. To me at least,” she would have preferred to have held her breath rather than talk, but then she remembered the ankle bracelet she carried with her - a gift from a Silver Jedi Master.

Fishing it out of her pocket, she placed it on an ankle. Instantly the device filtered anything noxious — which included the rather pungent smell.

“I’m looking for a power source. You haven’t happened to have spotted one on your travels have you?”

"I imagine it was as smooth as riding a bantha trying to play hopscotch."

"That bad, huh?"

Gir could briefly hear the bothan breathing, but Commander Arr'krell was otherwise uncharacteristically quiet for a few seconds.

"It's not something I looking forward to doing again, but this should be the last time we're moving it, right?"

"So we hope."

"Indeed."

"Commander, I'm going to be joining you on the station shortly. I imagine Colonel Quta will be on his way as well."

"What have you heard of him? I mean, the stuff not in the files. I trust you did your customary screening..."

Gir briefly closed his eyes as he thought of the blue and green mottled selkath. On paper, Quta seemed entirely average. Gir could find nothing in his file that showed him being particularly successful in any endeavor during his career with the Manaan Defense Corp and the federal Republic before that. The most revealing document was an officer record brief that painted the selkath as very reserved to everyone except his closest friends. But that same report also praised the espirit de corp in a unit that Quta had established where previous soldier satisfaction had not been high. It was a curious juxtaposition which made Gir all the more curious to meet him.

"I don't have any particular insights on him yet," replied Gir, "as hard as that is to believe. But everything that I've been able to find on him suggests that he'll be capable of leading his troops."

"I'm just hoping that I won't have to go to the pool to find him all the time..."

Gir grinned. I forgot how much Besk hates water...He spared a glance at the big blue world in front of him. That's something of an unfortunate posting for him then...

Gir gently pulled up on the yoke of his personal shuttle, causing his ship to gently climb up towards towards one of Manaan One's hangar bays. Buthis was not the only craft heading towards it. Gir's eye fell upon an older RAET painted in a speckled blue pattern that he recognized as the markings of the local defense force. He toggled a button on his HUD, bringing up the ship's information. That seems likely that its Quta's ship...and it looks like he's brought a platoon of his troops already...Besk's voice flowed through his comlink as Gir's ship entered the station hangar bay.

"You have impeccable timing...sir. It looks like we'll meet Quta together."

"I'll admit that I was hoping to arrive a bit earlier than him," said the admiral, "but it looks like we'll be taking the tour together."

Besk snorted, "I suppose it'll save me some time."

A gentle tremor reverberated through the admiral's craft as he set it down next a quartet of red-striped RAETs belonging to the Federal marines attached to the station.

"I'll see you in a moment Commander."

Gir unbuckled himself even before he had fully powered down the ship. While he began to go through the power-down checklist by rote, his mind wandered to the possibilities of the upcoming tour. On its face, it would be a simple affair of simple sight-seeing and familiarization for both Gir and Quta. Yet Gir knew that almost immediately that it would simultaneously be the start of the politics between the local Sekath defenders and their federal cohorts. While the politics wasn't necessary a bad thing, Gir guessed that he would be a wild card that might have throw off the balance of both Quta and Arr'krell as they began to get a feeling for the other's personalities and lines of thought. The blonde man strolled down the shuttle's ramp to find Command Arr'krell and a pair of armor-encased Republic marines waiting for him. The bothan offered him an almost friendly smile.

"Welcome aboard, Admiral Quee..."

Illyana had been standing in the senate room quietly watching them as they spoke. She was barely paying attention she was mostly just hoping nothing bad happened. The young padawan mentallly sighed she was here mostly for show, but if a fight broke out who the heck was she suppose to protect? Everyone? no one? As she continued to think she looked to [member="Ali Hadrix"] who was currently speaking she was talking about the kolto fields and the Sith.

The square was a large one. He failed to spot any of his padawans. But he felt [member="Illyana Nightshade"] - she was here somewhere, although he had to bite his lip not to reach out and track her. She was a skiled padawan and he knew he was not here to watch over her. In fact, she was here to watch over others. she had a mission on her own.

Sighing he looked around. So far everything seemed to go rather smooth on the square at least. One could have expected a crime wave or something such but as for now there was nothing of that kind.
The news, broadcast via a public holo-platform did however tell about a pirate group that had been said to operate from a small asteroid belt near by. Could they be connected with the usurper somehow?

there was so much that was wrong in the galaxy and so little one single person could understand. Would he ever be in a position to truly claim to understand it all? The force was supposed to be mysterious but in Mantics eyes the human mind outranked the force on that arena many times over.

"Good work men, pleasure overseeing your mission today. Apollo out." At that Jaccer would disconnect the comm link between him and the sixty men. With the dropships, and the soldiers inside returned to the command ship, the mission was officially over. The troops would be allowed to relax for the rest of the Republic's time at Manaan and afterwards they could return home to their families and normal lives.

However, for Jaccer, who currently aboard the Orion Corporation frigate, his day of work would continue. It was now up to the frigate's crew to get out of this system and back to the company's HQ without being detected by the vast naval fleets of the Galactic Republic and those opposing them. This task would be much easier than expected. It seemed that the ships who were already in contact with the enemy would either not notice the unidentified ship, or just ignore it altogether. The risk of being found out wasn't life-threatening either, the Lieutenant wasn't doubtful that he could just talk his way out of it if any situation would arise.

After dodging several blockades set up by the Republic and the pro-usurper forces alike, the frigate would be out of the system and away from the battle. "Captain, take us home." Soon after the ship would jump into hyperspace, beginning the journey home. Even though Jaccer's night would be over after this, the Orion Corporation staff would work into the night, evaluating and re-evaluating the readings and effectiveness of the Xythan force shields. The R&D process of these shields was put into overdrive in a hope to make them viable for mass-production and distribution in the coming year.

The dive suit was tight, but flexible. Ben stood on the other side of a large door as the pressure in the compartment came into equilibrium with that of the outside. Kono had stopped just outside the mining facility, and Ben was tasked with entering through a small hole in the ceiling which had corroded with age and disrepair. This facility had been abandoned in favor of new kolto extraction facilities on the floor on Manaan; it was not the kolto nor the technology used in it's procurement which interested Kono and his team of researchers, Ben reasoned. So what is it? Why am I down here?

Well, mapping he could do without knowing his objective. The suit gave off a sonar pulse every 90 seconds; this pulse would transmit Ben's location and also help Kono construct a three-dimensional map of the facility as Ben explored it. Just like the echolocation techniques used by the bats back on Lothal. The pressure-chamber slowly filled with water and Ben began to slow his breathing, centering himself in the Force. All around him, water was rising. Ben did not much care for swimming, and he especially did not care for a mission into which he could not carry his lightsaber.

The commlink in his helmet clicked loudly before Kono's voice flooded Ben's ears. "Testing. Testing. Do you copy, Ben?"

"Loud and clear, Dr. Kono." Ben noted that the Selkath's almost frenetic excitement had sobered considerably. There was clearly something serious going on here, but Ben could not figure out what reason Kono would have for keeping it from him. Perhaps he was paranoid, but then again, he was a Jedi. The chamber had now filled with water, and Ben could feel the suit adjusting around him to compensate for the pressure. It was time.

The cabin door opened, and Ben launched himself toward the opening, kicking his legs to propel him.

Sofia's strokes were gradually improving. She was not a strong swimmer but at least now she was an adept swimmer. After a day of swimming, she always felt very tired and ready to fall asleep the moment her head hit a bed. Unfortunately, this was not to be. A little before she could fall asleep, her wrist mounted DataPad indicating that someone was trying to contact her through the use of commlink.

Reluctantly, Sofia accept the call. It was her private investigator; he had contacted her to inform her that someone she was looking for - a former Sith soldier who had witnessed and participated in the destruction of Sofia's home town was in Manaan and had wanted to meet her. No matter how tired she was she had to see him. She needed to know the name of the person behind the slaughter so that she could finally avenge her friends or family.

It was strange that a former member of the Sith army would want to speak with her. Perhaps they wanted to capture her but how useful could a private in the Republic army could be to them? She was not privy to any sensitive information. There was only one way to find out. She had to go.

Post 3/20

False bravado and speeches she had heard before from the people who stood in positions that Ali now held. Alyesa listened intently for a moment before raising her hand up slightly, standing to address the Supreme Commander directly. “Civilians and innocents of war are different than a government who is driving a war machine – you can claim all that you will, but you are no different than the One Sith when it comes to this particular matter.” She wouldn’t bring up Alderaan in terms of resources and how they were nearly drained and depleted without a cent of restitution from the Republic – that was public knowledge. Of course, that might have been because of previous administration, but what made this one so different than the one prior? What made them so different than Lasedri?

“Tell me something, Ms. Hadrix.” She tapped a finger upon the table before her. “What makes you different than the Prime Minister who held the mantle before you? What would convince the people of Manaan that their resources, their lifeblood is worth sacrificing and giving to the Republic for a third time?” She gestured towards the woman before her. “You make a bold case, one which has been made here before. The One Sith and their domination over the Galaxy and how the Republic must be the righteous defenders!” Alyesa raised her voice as she moved from her chair and placed herself directly across the table. “These are things these Selkath have heard before, things I have heard before – very things I tried to convince others and myself that was the truth, so tell me…” Her tone changed, a bit softer than before. “What makes the Republic different than it was before?”

It wasn’t a lie, she stood before the Senate dozens of times, and was a proud patriot of everything the Republic did. She stood before billions and spoke of the One Sith warmachine and how they would not stop the resolve of the Republic – then they came to her homeworld and crushed it in a single blow. Alyesa stood like many before her, upon a hallowed battleground – she felt abandoned and bitter. She took her case before the Senate only to watch everything she worked hard on crumble around her and eventually be blackballed by the very Prime Minister she was second in command to – the woman she supported and worked for.

That bitterness turned to anger, and when she was gone from the spotlight – she took time to reflect but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t get over the anger held for the Republic. Would that change? Over time it might, maybe not. Her planet was held in Republic territory – with the ever looming threat of the One Sith at the border of course. This was different though, she knew these people – when she first started out in her political career and was unable to become a Junior Senator for Alderaan and needed a place to plant her roots, Manaan was there for her. She felt a certain obligation to ensure that they had some sense of security as they went about their daily lives.

Ali laughed. Out loud, in full view of the Selkath Assembly and its allied representatives. It was neither a long laugh, nor a loud one, but it was enough to express the derision Ali felt toward the woman attempting to stall her advance toward an agreement with the Selkath regarding their kolto. She planted her palms against the long, narrow table and stood, locking eyes with Organa and allowing her sardonic smile to fade into firmly pursed lips. "No more speeches then." She noted aloud, glancing at others in the Assembly before turning her gaze back on Alyesa and shrugging.
"The corporations Lasedri nationalized may have avoided such had they not been price-gouging the Republic taxpayers for product for years during war time. The recompense she collected from them by force is more than the Senate could have hoped to achieve through taxation in years. I could care less about their interests, as long as the machine we call society keeps moving ahead and people's lives are stable. In that, I am no different than the former Prime Minister. The difference between the Republic and the Sith, Miss Organa, is while we will never forcefully annex this world and enslave its people, neither are we responsible for helping them if they choose to remain independent. I want to care about your planet, but I have to care about the Republic first. So here are the facts. No speeches, I promise."

Ali keyed her datatablet; the image of the Galaxy reappeared and focused in on Manaan, a small blue world resting just South of Sith territory. "Here is Manaan, the Selkath homeworld," Ali explained unnecessarily. "You are a planet located just beyond the reach of the Sith in a very lonely part of the Galaxy." Ali used a light pen to accentuate the absence of organized governments and military forces in the region. "We are the nearest friendly force to the borders of your system, unless you count the Hutt Cartels, which I would not, and the value of your kolto is...immense." Ali pointed to the nearest Sith-held world. "This is Amar, a Sith world of great strength; located very close to your planet, which is essentially a diamond left on a park bench in the middle of Nar Shaddaa...waiting to be taken, and too easy a prize to resist." Ali straightened and held her gaze with Alyesa; although her words had spoken to the Selkath, her eyes had never left Organa. Now, however, she separated them, and looked about the chamber.
"One of two things will happen. You will join the Republic, we will make an arrangement to transport a sustainable supply of kolto in exchange for payment at a war time markup of no more than five percent. In exchange you will receive a bonafide flotilla and mobile garrison to ensure the protection of your people and your product, and when the Sith invade, we will do what we can to fend them off."

Ali turned off the holoprojector, causing the lighting in the chamber to dim somewhat. Perfect for instilling the atmosphere I want, Ali reflected before she concluded. "Or, we will leave here today with no agreement and when the Sith invade Manaan and enslave your people and strip its oceans bare of kolto, I will ignore your pleas for help and wait until the Sith are too occupied throwing your people into concentration camps before I even consider launching a counteroffensive to free your world." Ali left her words to hang darkly in the air as she took her seat and locked eyes with Organa once more, hoping to gauge her reaction. She had been harsh, she knew, but every word the absolute truth. She could not view Manaan for its culture or its society, she had to view it for its possible contribution to the war effort. Such was life in war time. By the Force, Ali thought to herself, I miss Peace.

Sofia was at her stipulated location but the private inspector was not there nor was the man. There was no sign of the two men she was waiting for even after an hour and a half but that did not deter her, she had to know who was responsible for the massacre. An hour passed, and another. The sky was darkening but Sofia still waited alone. Annoyed over being stood up, she returned to her hotel as there was nothing much she could have done about the situation.

Laying in her bed, Sofia wondered what happened to the pair. It was very uncharacteristic of her private investigator to behave in this manner. Maybe something had happened to them. Sofia closed her eyes resolving to track down her private investigator and the former Sith soldier who participated in the atrocities. She needed answers. She needed closure and more than anything else, she needed revenge. Sofia knew it would not bring back her mother, father or younger sister but it was better than doing nothing.

As the admiral stepped into the presence of Commander Arr'krell and the two marines, Quta's ship popped through the magcon field to almost list onto its landing spot. The admiral wasn't entirely sure if that maneuver was an intentional minimalist grace achieved by its pilot, or just plain carelessness. Gir took in a deep breath of the station's comparatively fresh air as he contemplated those thoughts. It could be a cultural or personal statement as well, I suppose...As gases leaked out of the selkath's ship, he found himself walking in step with Arr'krell's retinue. Besk began to mumble just loud enough for Gir to hear.

"I'm going to give his pilot flying lessons, I think."

Gir raised an eyebrow, "Why's that?"

"He burned up part of my deck."

A wry grin creased Gir's face, "I'm sure the maintenance droids will be ill-tempered after having to scrub them yet again..."

"That's not the point, and you know it...sir. It's attention to detail, especially when you're first meeting your counterpart, and quite possibly your superior, in relation to you of course."

"We have to remember, Quta isn't his pilot."

"Unless he actually flew it..." interjected Besk.

Further conversation halted as the selkath soldiers began to descend from their starship. He had seen the holos of the species before, but never one in person. While he had expected to have most of his attention drawn to their faces, he find his eyes frequently staring at their feet, wondering how such thick were adapted to an oceanic existence. His eyes met that of the lead Selkath, who offered what Gir guessed was a pleasant smile.

"Admiral Quee and Commander Besk, I presume," murmured Colonel Quta, "I trust your journey to our world was not entirely unenjoyable."

"Well..."

Gir's eyes darted to Besk's face. While the bothan's fur rippled, which Gir knew to be a sign of his true feelings about the trip to the world, the bothan managed to reveal no displeasure in his face, though Gir felt a slight sting of annoyance in the undertone of the bothan's voice. Still something that only someone who really knows him will detect...

"It certainly wasn't my worse trip," said the bothan, "but nothing like the admiral's here, isn't that right sir?"

Gir blinked at the deflection, "My trip was reasonably pleasant..."

Sofia had called up the Private Investigator's offices only to be informed that the man had not yet returned from his trip to Manaan by his secretary. The woman sounded worried when Sofia had contacted the offices. It was very out of character for the man to disappear without a word. 'Something must have happened to him,' Sofia thought. She was no Jedi but she could sense it.

Dressed in a set of civilian clothing, Sofia headed out of her hotel room. She could not draw attention to herself. Her first course as action was to visit the investigator's hotel. Luckily it was only a short walk away from her own.

When she arrived at the hotel, she showed the reception a picture of the man and gave them his name. "Did this man check in yesterday?' She inquired.

"Yes, he did." The receptionist replied. "Are you by any chance Miss Annesley? A man who left the room yesterday gave us a description which matches you perfectly and told us to give you keys to the room should you visit."

"Yes, I am." Sofia replied, taking the keys the walked towards the elevator.

It did not take long for the elevator to arrive. Sofia entered and pressed the number five. A few seconds later, the elevator arrived at her floor. Sofia exited the elevator and walked towards room 508.

"Have them increase to 80% capacity and turn 90 degrees in V formation. Lets see if they can hold what has been promised."

"Yes Sir!" the response cam quickly. "You might need to strap yourself in Colonel."

The test run had just begun but it sure looked promising.

The bodies of the Private Inspector and a man Sofia had never seen been for laid on the floor of the room. The spots where the blood had touched the carpet turned brown in colour. As the shock subsided, Sofia began to inspect the room. Although the two had a professional relationship, Sofia had grown to see him as an older brother to her over the years.

Sofia tried not to cry as she contacted the authorities. "He-hello, I'd like to report a murder." she sobbed as she told the person on the other side the location. She burst into tears as she awaited the police's arrival. After a few minutes of sobbing, Sofia got a hold of herself and started to look around the room. There were signs of a struggle and they were murdered was all she could tell from inspecting a crime scene. She was not a soldier, she was a detective. As much as she wanted to solve the murder herself, she couldn't and could only leave it in the capable hands of the detectives that were soon to arrive on scene.

The boats made another sharp turn and threw up waves meters high. Inside the crafts the republi marines sensed the shift but not as badly as they had thought. The preassure of the movement was there but the hydraulics controlling the cabin like areas did a swift job in easening the preassure despite the extreme speed the crafts produced.

“Initiate weapon testing. Short range weapons, rife” Weiss ordered.

Moments later the muffled sound of rapidly firing plasma was heard. It came from al around them.

“Initiate weapon testing two. Heavy weapon. Fire canon.”

The crafts shook lightly but again not as much as one might have thought. The laser canon fired repeatedly without the craft loosing any speed.

Weiss watched the monitor in front of him. The boats still held a perfect V formation.

Kark, this was a good freakin boat…

Our forces have begun the assault on the city and we are tasked with protecting them from any and all hostile forces from space. PLease form up on the Formidable and follow us in. we will take up a defensive position above the city itself and hold the line."

Reshmar finished and waited for the human to responde. He knew the man from before his command in the Republic. He had served with him once when the Republic has assisted him and the Mon Calamari Defense Fleet with a pirate issue. Holt had been assigned to be his second in the joint operations force. He wa a good commander and Reshmar was glad to see he was the one who responded.

"Also captain, break off a ship to investigate some reports of activity along the asteroid belts edge. I have a feeling were being watched at the very least."
Reshmar said as he typed in a set of commands then nodded to someone off screen.
