Disney determines New SW Canon

So long as they don't turn things on their head, I suppose this could be interesting. New lore to learn and what not, although I do hope they refrain from axing too much ;~; I've put a lot of hard work into learning my canon lore.

I don't know. Everyone keeps saying its extremely necessary due to all the canon stuff already out there, but they could easily cut out the garbage like....Force Storm wielding babies someone said? and keep the rest of the comics and novels canon if they did a trilogy surrounding Ben all would be fine!

My question is why does Abrams feel the need to make his own story? There's plenty in the EU to roll with. PLENTY. Don't destroy the best part of Star Wars, improve upon it. Sure, the movies were great, but there's more to Star Wars than six films. There's books. Comics. Series. There's an entire universe for them to play with. Don't mess with something just because you can. I downvote this.

"The Lucasfilm Story Group is a division of Lucasfilm Ltd. founded in 2013[1] that will determine all Star Wars canon. The group, which includes Keeper of the Holocron Leland Chee and Star Wars author Pablo Hidalgo, aims to abolish the current canon hierarchy system and create a single cohesive continuity.[2] The group began as an initiative from Kathleen Kennedy.[1] Lucasfilm Story Group—including Carrie Beck, Diana Williams, Leland Chee and Pablo Hidalgo—participated in the making of Star Wars: The Old Republic: Galactic Starfighter, a digital expansion to the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic, being mentioned in the ending credits." -- Wookieepedia 1/15/2014

Just pulled this from Wiki. Fascinatingly enough, this claims Kathleen Kennedy gave the group the aim of abolishing the hierarchy system. (Movies, then Tv, then books, then games, etc.) It gives no mention to JJ Abrams and the new Movies at all.

If that is so. And the aim is create a single cohesive story? This group could touch everything. Not simply the loose hairs that might conflict with their new films. That means everything, everything. And unfortunately, that means time. We might not see the fruits of their labors for years. At least, published I mean. No doubt Wookieepedia will see updates as they become available to the public.

Anyway. 2 cents.

A number of easily attributable reasons. Primarily, anything that he does that has been done by someone else, royalties would have to be paid. As well, it's long since been known that in the present canon ranking system, movies come on top. Nothing can contradict the movies and remain canon. Thus, you can look at this as a natural extension of that policy; if nothing can contradict the movies and remain canon, then anything that Abrams does becomes canon and anything that conflicts with it will get bumped.

Besides, what this does is cleans up the Star Wars universe and helps make it internally consistent. For example, most people would agree that the Jedi and Sith are pretty much top dogs as far as CQC combat goes, yet Karen Traviss walks in and basically declares that all Mandalorians are totally better than those stinky Jedi. Nothing stops a new author from making a story that completely upends the consistency of the lore, provided it doesn't try and overrule movie canon.

Honestly, this doesn't change the stories that people love. It won't stop people from reading them or referencing them in roleplays. This can really only be a good thing.

Quite honestly, I have always supported the EU and I would actually find myself hating Disney if they tried to destroy it. I understand we have some things that can go, but people such as Revan, Mara Jade, and Cade, events such as the revival of the emperor, the purge at the hands of Nihilis and Sion, all of these things are important to the galaxy for they have shaped it with their actions. By getting rid of this, you take away what people such as myself have worked so hard to grow knowledgeable about. For me, getting rid of much of the EU would be like making Peter Parker get his powers from a shot, or making Wolverine completely conscious of their past. Agreed, it doesn't seem necessary to the universe most of the public knows, but I can see how everything comes together into the universe that I have studied and worked to understand. In my opinion, if you don't understand something in EU, then study it until you do. There is always an explanation and that is why I love it. It ties into itself and destroying one part of the EU unravels another. If they remove the wrong thing, then they may pull the thread that unravels the entire cloth.

According to Lucas, the only real canon things are the movies and Clone Wars show.

For me, the revival of the Emperor was dumb, and the whole Dark Empire trilogy just destroyed the sacrifice of Vadar and Luke's stand against the Emperor. And it's unlikely that Disney is going to mess with any lore regarding the Old Republic. The only events that I'd be worried about would be post ROTJ. And even then, even if they axe a particular story, there's nothing that says that certain characters might not might appearances in the movies.

The new movies they're coming out with seem weird to me, because I honestly don't know how they're going to make a new story without outright taking something out. Over the years, people have gone through almost every year since the end of Return of the Jedi, and there is not a lot of room to make something new with the cast. There is also the issue of the time gap of the actors since the last movie. What are they going to do? Jump about thirty years to make their appearance consistent? That's a lot of material, and a lot to explain if they want to include important pieces of information.

It's like those who edited the Bible or works of Aristotle....things are lost, things are included...things are excluded...things changed
I always wondered about Uncle Owen being referred to as Ben's brother...

Just no.

I thought you'd post that EU would be subject to new ideas, not that they'd start removing what already exists. That's absurd. Why not work with what exists and better it?

I understand your concern. However, I'm not on the committee and can only offer speculations at this time as to their methods. As for new ideas? Yes. Disney has new ideas. We will all understand that more clearly as time passes.

As for working with what exists? I'm not sure you understand the current state of the SW EU from her perspective. The creation of this committee can tell us enough about that. One need only consider the reason for it's creation to understand her methodology. Examine closely the members of the Committee and many things will be revealed.

Sadly. That is all I can offer for now. If you desire more insider information I might recommend you get in-touch with Leland Chee via his Twitter Page. *wink*

Oh I didn't mean you my friend :), came off as a bit harsher than I wanted that. I just hope that bits of canon i've been writing for many, many years stay there. I understand some things went way outside of the scope of starwars too. We'll see how heavy handed they are.

For the twilek planet debate for example, it might finally help clear it up.

Inb4 the Revanchrist is reborn lelelel. I couldn't care tbh, it will still be a good movie with Disney's production quality recently. Lets just hope as many have stated that some the legitimate EU stuff is kept.
