Where should she grab for a proper throw… well… he had not intended for her to grab him, so it did not really matter. She reached out for his shirt, but as she hesitated, Jacob grabbed the girl by the wrist and put his hip into hers and just bent. It would have been enough to lift the girl off her feet with ease, not because he was strong, but because it was a simple matter of balance and physics.

Then he set her down.

“So when you grabbed my shirt, you were reacting to what I already did, but if you would have rolled as you hit the mat, instead of when you hit the mat, you would have rolled me too.”

Jacob took a step back.

“You think you can mimic that?”

He did not wait for an answer before approaching her, trying to grab her so that she could use his arm as something to grab.

“Grab, pivot, toss.”

Objective II: Wartime Training

Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion as Jacob guided her hand, his hip having been the last thing she would’ve thought of grabbing onto in an attempt to throw him—or anyone really. "Wait, how is that gonna hel—w-whoa!" She felt her balance shift as the ranger dent without warning, prompting her claw-like nails to extend in order to secure her grip even as Mahsa gave a little hop on one leg to try and stay with her center of gravity.

She immediately released her hold on Jacob the very second both of her feet were back on solid ground, the cheerful yellows in her hair gravitating now to darker amber hues. "S-Sorry, I d-didn’t mean to… are y-you alright?" The instinct to survive had been drilled into her since before the young Kazelrrian could breathe, and Mahsa could only hope the fabric of his clothes had been thick enough to prevent her claws from reaching his skin.

Roll before I hit the mat… A faint nod was her response when Jacob asked if she could mimic that, though the uncertainty Mahsa felt was plain to see in her face. He closed the distance then before taking a firm hold of her robes and, thinking this was his way of volunteering, Mahsa went ahead with the revised motions.

One hand took a firm hold of the robe on his shoulder, the other reaching for a spot close to his hip, before the girl gave it her best attempt to pivot and try to toss the larger boy. Toss and roll… toss and roll!

Besides a few key endorsements, it seemed that discussion on PARA had come to a close.

Alicio sent soft, welcoming smiles to the senators from Giju and Abregado-rae, respectively. It was good to have the support of Herglic space. In addition, Alicio knew Kel. Their ideals lined up near-perfectly on most issues, and this bill seemed to be no different. "Thank you, Senator Gruhn, Senator Se'taav. PARA requires diligent implementation. With caretakers such as you, Kel, I have no doubt it will succeed."

Waiting a moment to see if anyone else wished to have their voices heard, the Senator from Alderaan nodded, his face considerably less severe than what he'd entered the new chamber with. "If that's all... It's time to christen our new governing house, the proper way."

"I motion we put the Pan Alliance Relief Act to a vote."

Maybe Jacob should have warned Mahsa about what he was planning. That would have saved the searing pain that came from sharp claws digging into his shoulder. He winced, but followed though with the plan as he intended. When he put the girl down he reached to his shoulder. The fabric was torn, but it had spared the skin from breaking too badly. Jacob felt the scratch marks, but from what he could tell by looking at his fingers, it was nothing too serious.

“Nothing bacta can’t fix,” he said with a smile. “I’m okay, though… you keep surprising me. Between the hair color change thing, and now retractable claws…”

Yeah, being a Jedi was cool. Even just the number of people he had met with so many unique qualities. It was not the mundane life of being a Ranger. Sure there were fun parts on that side of his life as well, but the Jedi brought a diversity to life that the rangers did not. Jacob had made enough of that observation to know that would be one thing that made his time with the Jedi different, aside from using the force.

It was Mahsa’s turn to try, and the redhead gave her a reassuring smile before she attempted it. Her technique was not too bad. Her hand went to the right place, but her timing was off… again…

Jacob’s feet did not even lift up off the mat. Maybe she needed to get her hip closer. She seemed a little nervous, or afraid she may hurt him again. They were never going to make progress if that was the case. Jacob went out on a limb.

“You can’t be afraid to hurt. Trust me… I used to train like this everyday. I am used to being tossed around. I don’t know… just pretend like I am some bad guy that is trying to kidnap you or something.”

Jacob took a step back.

“Try again.”

Valery nodded, "I'm sure the locals on Kashyyyk are also paying attention to what's happening in the Galaxy. The heightening risk of getting attacked might make them more willing to join forces." It was just an assumption because it was possible that they'd rather keep away the Alliance as well, fearing that it'd only bring the enemy closer.

But with how ruthless this Empire was, they'd never be safe for long.

A sigh followed, after which she ran a hand through her hair, "Yeah, we don't have as much time as I'd like, but we do need to pick carefully. If we choose the wrong location, we could even make things worse." She turned to her friend and offered a faint smile, "I'll ask the Council to meet very soon and we can discuss it. We'll have some time before then to come up with options, so hopefully, it'll smoothen out the meeting."

cLlprTU.png
Objective II: Wartime Training

Something was wrong, she could tell as much early into her attempt. Despite her attempt to mimic the movements Jacob had shown Mahsa hadn't been able to lift even one foot off the ground for the boy. It reminded the girl of how small and weak she was, and the irritation that gnawed at her as Mahsa finally aborted that try displayed in vibrant red strands among the curtain of white that was her hair.

“You can’t be afraid to hurt.” He was right, Mahsa knew as much, but that didn’t make things any easier. Friendly sparring had never been a thing back in the Cage, and she worried that old habits meant to ensure her survival could wound her own peers beyond the acceptable point of their matches.

A small chortle escaped her when she heard Jacob’s pretend scenario, the red hues in her hair shifting towards merry yellows to reflect her amusement. "You don’t look like a bad guy though." Then again she’d thought the same of the Sullustan chef and his wife back in Atrisia—

The thought was instantly pushed back as Jacob called for her to try again, a small nod given in response before the Kazelrrian took a deep breath to steel her resolve. I can do this…! The distance between them was closed quickly as her hands moved to grab Jacob like before, the girl mentally going over the steps in her mind in an attempt to keep her timing from slipping this third time around.

Jacob let out a sigh as this time he did not even move at all. She should have been able to throw him easily enough. Maybe she was trying too much with her upper body strength. He looked at the girl. That would definitely be a problem.

“You gotta pivot, I think you’re trying to use your arms to throw me. Use physics instead. Get me off balance.”

Jacob moved closer, as though he were an instructor. He knew how to handle this because he had seen it done many times before. His hands went right to her hips as they stood there completely failing a simple flip.

“Gotta get right in there, and now bend, but use your legs, and hips, not your arms.”

The boy did not even think about how that might look, or the responses that might bring. They were training… right… besides, Jacob was innocent to a lot of things. His naivety could not be any more obvious than in the current moment he found himself in.

cLlprTU.png
Objective II: Wartime Training

She hadn’t thought it possible. After all, she had managed to throw him—even if the attempt had fallen apart halfway through—before, so why did it feel like an impossible feat now?

Frustration returned in flecks of red that mingled with the white strands of hair, the initial sunshine hues now dulled and almost gone. ”… that felt worse than before." She’d finally given up the attempt after a couple of tries, bottom lip jutting out slightly in the early stages of a pout.

Mahsa listened as the redhead offered pointers of his own, but the light frown on her face remained. She had been trying to throw him off balance, but it was impossible to pivot when the boy felt like an immovable object in her grasp.

The distance between them was cut short as Jacob moved in to show Mahsa where exactly she should grasp his hip, her own hand moving to mimic the hold and compare. "Okay, so here… right?" A glance was given up to the taller Jacob to confirm, before those golden eyes shifted down to pay attention as he instructed where and how to flex her hips and bend her knees.

There wasn’t any time to feel flustered, not when her mind was currently so focused on the task at hand. Mahsa wanted to learn this, in part to ensure she hadn’t just wasted Jacob’s time, but mostly because the girl really wanted to surprise Ayhan Ayhan if the chance to spar with the Firronthix presented itself.

Expectations always came with an amount of pressure, and the Kazelrrian could feel it in the way her heart beated just a bit faster than before as she readied herself for another attempt. Two consecutive failures had certainly knocked the wind out of her sails, but the determination had yet to leave her gaze.

"I’m gonna try again." With her hold on his hip already secured, all that was left was to grab onto Jacob’s shoulder, the girl taking a deep breath to compose herself before going for it.

Knock him off balance… Doubt crossed her mind as she questioned her ability, before it was promptly pushed out as her leg shifted with her movements—attempting to sweep the closest leg of the boy to destabilize Jacob—before the flexed her hips and bend her knees to try and throw him.

She was flustered, Jacob could feel it, but Mahsa was also determined. That was a good sign. There was nothing that perseverance could not overcome, especially when it came to learning something new. If she could push past this, then the next time something got in her way, she would push past that as well.

He grinned, then, in an instant, felt himself going over the top of her.

His back hit the mat with a thud that echoed in the chamber. It was followed by laughter. Jacob could not help but laugh that the girl had finally succeeded. It only took placing her hips in the right place. It was largely exciting to feel as though he helped someone learn something that they did not think was possible or that they could do.

“And if you can flip me, you can flip almost anyone in here. There are some species which are far too dense, but most of them don’t end up facing off with Jedi either.”

He sat up and crossed his legs again. Their spar was likely done, but that did not mean they had to stop getting to know each other. In a way this was what Jacob came to the arena for. He wanted to make new friends.

“So, you been here long?”

cLlprTU.png
Objective II: Wartime Training

She felt his body shift with her movements, and when the boy’s heavier weight rested atop her Mahsa feared a repeat of their sparring session. She committed to the bit however, unwilling to break the flow of her movements, and her perseverance finally paid off when she heard the solid slam of Jacob’s back against the matted floor.

"I d-did it…?" A faint whisper escaped her as her eyes took in the results of her hard work and Jacob’s immeasurable patience, gazing down at the redhead who was currently chuckling his heart out. Her own rump landed on the mat a moment later, the young girl staring from the boy to her empty hands and back, before a wide smile finally brightened her complexion.

"I did it!!!"

Her joy vividly reflected in the varying shades of merry yellows that colored the bottom half of her hair, the excitement Mahsa currently felt radiating outwardly and flooding the minds of those closest to them without the Kazelrrian consciously noticing it.

It hurt to grin so strongly and for so long, evident by the way her hands reached to lightly press against her cheeks, but the smile on her face refused to lessen for now. "Really, really?" She would’ve never thought it possible to topple over an opponent bigger and heavier than herself, but Jacob had proven to her it wasn’t impossible as Mahsa had originally thought.

Watch out, Ayhan Ayhan ! A determined look crossed her face then, her hands balled into tight fists close to her chest, before Jacob’s voice snapped the girl from her fantasy of surprising the FIrronthix in combat one day.

"H-Huh... a-ah, yeah… kinda I guess?" There was a moment of silence as the girl did some mental math, shifting back to a sitting butterfly position as the fingers on her hands helped Mahsa keep track of her count. "We came to the Temple about… half a year now, I think."

Give or take a few weeks perhaps, but that sounded about right for the girl. "What about you, Jacob?" He’d mentioned being relatively new before, maybe he’d joined about the same time as Zaiya Ceti Zaiya Ceti ?

“I have been at the temple for exactly three months now.”

Of course that did not mean he had just met his father three months ago, or learned he was force sensitive. It had just taken the general three years to realize the boy needed to be among the Jedi. If his grandfather would have had his way, Jacob would have never gone to the Jedi. That also meant the boy would have never been trained as a Ranger. At least his mother had been able to convince her father to let Jacob go, that he would be okay.

“That is about long enough to learn the basic concepts of the first form. It was why I did not recognize your second. I assumed we all were learning the same thing.”

He winced as the pain in his back reminded him about the dangers of making an assumption.

“I guess I learned differently.”

Rather than frown, Jacob smiled. He really did not want the girl to feel guilty that he was in pain. It was not her fault after all. The hit she landed was clean and fair. Jacob was certainly mature enough to learn from his mistakes and not get lost wallowing in them. A good soldier did not have the time to do anything but improve.

He would not make the same mistake twice.

“So you have a master then, I take it?”

cLlprTU.png
Objective II: Wartime Training

Three months… that meant he’d been here longer than Zaiya then, and about half the time that she currently held. "The Temple is a pretty impressive place, right?" She’d been in absolute awe upon first arriving, surprised at the care the Jedi had for the younglings and the freedoms they were willing to afford their padawans.

"The s-ship is pretty cool too," It was clear the designers had gone through great lengths and costs to make it a safe home away from home as the war waged, but the sleek corridors and rooms devoid of any scuff marks or history paled against the story rich areas of the building back in Coruscant in her eyes. "B-But I hope we can go back to the Temple s-soon."

She didn’t miss the wince that crossed Jacob’s face or the way he’d shifted a bit, certain that the mark she’d left on his back was the main cause of it. An apologetic smile was given to the redhead, before the girl nodded softly. "That’s about how long it took me to learn Shii-Cho too." A somewhat rapid pace compared to other padawans, but expected considering the girl’s extensive combat experience… the Jedi’s teachings allowed her to refine the crude movements she’d learned to survive.

"I d-do, her name is Ioti Jigora." Mahsa hadn’t expected to catch the attention of one of them so quickly, but she’d soon found herself under the guidance of a particular Echani—the third apprentice to be raised by the woman. "W-What about you, Jacob?"

The temple, impressive? Jacob just nodded. The building had been a marvel of something which had stood for quite some time. History had recorded Coruscant changing hands many times, and it amazed him how quickly the Jedi were able to establish a new temple wherever they went. That was how it seemed in his short 13 years of life at least. Now the ship, Mahsa was correct in how cool it was.

“It is certainly some of the best tech I have seen.”

Jacob had seen quite a bit. The Rangers had to rely on technology to compensate for their lack of force use when facing off against Sith. Not that Jacob had ever done such a thing. He knew the Jedi and the Galactic Alliance had impressive capabilities when it came to what they could produce, but the ship they were on was certainly a grand testament to the best of what they had to offer.

He shrugged. Jacob was not in any hurry to get back to the temple. In truth, he could live about anywhere, and with the Galactic Alliance relocating their capitol to Fondor, it was likely the New Jedi Order would establish a new temple there. It would be the strategic thing to do, as well as spread their learning centers throughout their territory.

Thinking like that was the reason the redhead was going to be a guardian. Jacob had been raised to think like a soldier, to have a tactical mind. His dreams of what life would be like in the future did not deviate from that. Ideally, he would one day be the greatest tactician the order had ever seen, at least the greatest of his generation, if he had to settle.

“I don’t have a master yet,” he admitted. “I have just been learning through classes, and spars like this.”

He left off the fact he devoured whatever training manuals and holocrons he could get his hands on. Though, he was also certain a master would take him on at some point. Jacob would not thrive without one. He did offer the white haired girl a smile. Her nerves seemed to be calming somewhat, and he was finally relaxing.

“You seem pretty adept with a lightsaber. Did it come naturally to you?”

cLlprTU.png
Objective II: Wartime Training

She nodded in agreement to his words, even with her limited knowledge Mahsa was able to appreciate what an advanced piece of technology the ship was… and the work that must have gone into building such a beast, especially given the circumstances that surrounded them all. She appreciated it as much as any other person aboard, even if her preference would always be for the natural world.

"O-Oh, I see…" Mahsa was unsure if this could be a sore topic for the boy, so she was hesitant to dig into it any further as she offered a small encouragement. "I-I’m sure you’ll get a m-master soon."

Besides, it sounded like Jacob was doing well on his own for now. Being able to self-study wasn’t a skill that many possessed and, thankfully so, there was an almost endless trove of knowledge available in the archives and the library for the minds curious enough to seek them out.

"Uuhm, k-kinda…?" Was it truly a natural skill, or had her body simply acclimated quickly to the efficiency of a newfound weapon? The Kazelrrian wasn’t sure which of those statements was the truth behind some of the skills she’d displayed today, though she didn’t feel as adept as the boy made her sound.

"I still struggle w-with Soresu." She was unsure as to why, but the movements of that Form didn’t seem to flow as naturally as the ones for Makashi and Ataru did. Her master had reassured her that it would come to her in time, but even after weeks of studying Mahsa didn’t feel she’d gotten any better at it.

Aurelio La Valette Aurelio La Valette

Had that last flurry of blows he held at bay really been his opponent holding back? Impressive. And problematic. The mere force behind the blows now hammering away at Jaidan's guard was not, in and of itself, that much of a problem. He'd dealt with bigger and harder hitting opponents many times before. But this was raw power married with precision. Aurelio had clearly trained to the point of knowing how to apply just enough brute force to be overpowering in his momentum without over-committing himself to a swing and sacrificing balance. In other words, the current exchange left Aurelio firmly in control of the engagement, and that was a problem.

As for how Jaidan might go about shifting the momentum back in his favor...well, there were actually an array of choices, all potentially viable. But they were pretty much all mutually exclusive, and he had to pick one immediately or court "death".

The first option he considered and immediately rejected was to mirror Aurelio's approach. Meet the larger man blow for blow, and push directly upstream against his offensive. He was familiar with Form V, of course. He'd faced it often enough in training, and experimented with making it his own default once before deciding on a different path. It was, in many ways, an ideal all around performer, an outgrowth of Soresu which incorporated a solid guard while encouraging a far more proactive and expedient approach to conflict resolution. He'd even obtained permission to handle the weapon of a few accomplished practitioners, and gleaned some valuable insights...enough, perhaps, to give Aurelio a nasty shock with another rapid tonal shift which he could capitalize on if he moved quickly enough. But from what he'd learned of this man, he suspected Aurelio would recover too quickly for that approach to really pay off, and Jaidan would just be matching styles with someone who was better at it. Worse still, Jaidan would have to draw on the Force to contend with brute strength here, a resource just as available to Aurelio, and the resulting escalation would have Jaidan depleting his reserves at a far greater rate.

No, interesting as the prospect was and curious as he was to see what the bigger man would make of it, it was foolish to play to another man's strengths. Alternatively, he could just keep doing exactly what he was now. It was hardly the most exciting option, and would only achieve a sort of stasis in the near term, but he could maintain this defense for some time. Yes, Aurelio had dialed up the intensity, but he'd also shifted his focus. The fact that these attacks were aimed at his blade, a target away from his body, meant that he had a bit more breathing room as far as he chose to defend himself. With the proper footwork and distance control, a boon of his cross-training in Form II, simply keeping himself in the fight was still manageable. And prolonging this fight could potentially work to his advantage. It meant more time to study Aurelio's technique, while at the same time testing the depths of his endurance...and potentially his patience, if Jaidan was continuously outwardly unbothered by the onslaught.

Or he could go for a balance between those two extremes, and really employ his finesse to answer Aurelio's strength. He assumed the large man's strategy in attacking the weapon rather than the man wielding it was to wear him down before moving in to attack a depleted opponent, and there was merit to that, but Jaidan also perceived a vulnerability it opened. He could switch back to a one-handed grip, allow one of those power strokes to blow right through his guard, and still be safe so long as the blade was held away from his body. And while Aurelio's movements were controlled power, they were still full-bodied, two handed strikes. Following up a strike like that with more of the same was mechanically far slower than a simple flip of the wrist, which is all Jaidan would require to bring his own blade back up into attack position, theoretically inside Aurelio's guard. It would mean returning to something Aurelio had already seen, thus showing him a pattern he could plan around, but that kind of smooth flow back and forth between serene defense and sudden offense was where his strength lay.

They could all work, admittedly with varying degrees of likelihood. But ultimately, suppressing the smile he'd allowed himself just before this little match began, he decided to gamble on a fourth approach. He did so with some regret, for in truth, he was rather enjoying himself. It felt good to give these old skills he'd worked so hard to gain a proper dusting off, against an opponent with a different approach who, win or lose, would give him a nice and proper challenge. But they were here to train for real war, and their enemies would not confine themselves purely to conventional tactics, so neither would he.

He opened, seemingly, with the first and weakest plan. Squaring up his stance, he began putting some real force into his swings, meeting Aurelio's assault and fighting him for ever inch. Her didn't fake the effort, he couldn't fake the speed of the exchange. To put the proper needed force into this, he even drew a bit on THE Force, now attacking with both a speed and a strength which his initial appearance had not suggested. He would give himself this last bit of satisfaction, indulge his curiosity, and see if Aurelio had expected to find a creditable performance of his own style used against him.

And then...a bit of play acting. Jaidan let the grip on his hilt slacken just a little. Nothing too obvious. It didn't take much with this kind of strength at work. A great and resounding crack sounded as the two blades met, and then Jaidan's lightsaber went spinning off to the side out of his hand...just before the open palm of his left hand came up and produced a brilliant white light that totally obscured everything while a great keening whistle like a tea kettle boiling into a megaphone rent the air. It would do no real harm; it was a simple sensory illusion, its utility based entirely in its capacity to surprise and disorient while Jaidan backed off a couple steps. Hopefully it would give him the moment he needed to reach out with his other now free hand and summon his innocuous walking staff over from the corner where he'd left it atop his robe.

New weapon in hand, he now brought it down in a great, two-handed overhead swing.

Jacob shrugged. Whether he got a master soon or not, that didn't matter he supposed. What mattered was that he did the best he could with the circumstances he was given. Just because his father would not teach him did not make him any less a Jedi. He understood the reasoning behind it, and he respected it. Jacob wanted a father not a master. JJ would never be both. He would default to one or the other. Maybe they would not be such a bad thing.

"You already know three forms?"

Forms one, two, and three, that was pretty impressive. It also gave Jacob hope that the first form would not be difficult to master. Once he had the feel for his lightsaber down, he would move on to other forms, something more fluid, an extension of his own natural movement.

That was the thing about combat. It needed to feel natural.

"Maybe it doesn't feel natural, like your body is not supposed to move that way. From what I've read the forms are not meant for everyone, even if they build on each other."

He smiled.

"It's okay to struggle with one, because maybe you'll master the next. Sometimes a concept just needs to be a concept."

That was his military training talking. It was not meant to be profound wisdom. Jacob was still thirteen, but at least the advice was meant to be helpful.

"I mean… I'm still learning the first form so…"

He shrugged again.

"So what are we supposed to do now?"

Objective II: Wartime Training

"A-Ah, not q-quite…" A faint blush covered her cheeks as she tried to mend whatever idea Jacob had gotten about her knowledge or skills. "They’re just the ones my master has been f-focusing on for now."

Mahsa had only become comfortable enough with Shii-Cho recently, and even then there were times that the girl drastically deviated from the taught steps and approaches of the first form. In contrast she found every Soresu lesson she had always ended with a headache, the movements of the form clashing drastically with the natural fighting style Mahsa had adapted to over her time in the Cage.

"M-Mhmm, that’s pretty much it." Jacob nailed the issue on the head easily, and Ataru had been a recent addition by the Echani after Mahsa’s lessons with the Force had progressed further. It was still too early to tell, but so far Mahsa had found that form to be fun... so she was certainly eager to learn more about it instead of the good ol’ and reliable Form III.

"Yeah, no one can be good at everything… r-right?" She hoped that was the case at least, being perfect at everything sounded exhausting and—quite frankly—something Mahsa couldn’t see herself ever achieving.

"So what are we supposed to do now?"
"I uuhm, that’s a good q-question…?"

She was reminded that their sparring match had technically finished a while ago, golden eyes quietly sweeping over to the spot where Vera Noble Vera Noble and Zaiya Ceti Zaiya Ceti were still having their own match. It had turned into a lesson of sorts from what the Kazelrrian had managed to pick up, something that would be good for the Lovalla no doubt, which meant Mahsa wasn’t inclined to interrupt them any time soon.

"Oh, I think Aris is done…?" She had expected to see him and Braze Braze together, confusion coloring her words before she shrugged it off as the girl got back to her feet. A hand was offered towards Jacob to help him stand, before Mahsa pointed over at the Epicanthix. "C’mon, you can meet Vera’s brother while they finish their match."

Jacob was new like Zaiya after all, it would probably be nice for him to meet more of his peers now that they had the chance.

Aris was in the arena still, by himself now, calmly holding his lightsaber as he.. Did drills. It was a pretty normal thing for him to do, swinging his blade again and again in a simple overhead strike. They were the typical strikes taught to all the younglings, for him to work on. Which wasn't tiring or doing much for him at this point. Just repetitive motions he was long used to making. He needed to change it up, but, he just hadn't thought on how.

Or even to to begin with.

A wild thrill surged through Aurelio as his opponent matched him blow for blow. It had been a long time since anyone could keep up with his swings. Aurelio would be lying if he didn't admit that at first sight, he doubted Jaidan's ability to pull off such a feat. Yet, with the Force, such feats were always possible.

With a hearty laugh and a tightened grip on his saber, Aurelio put more force into his swings, curious to see how long Jaidan could sustain this level of combat. However, his momentum was abruptly halted by a sudden, blinding light that momentarily disoriented him.

Blinking rapidly to clear his vision, Aurelio realized it was too late to fully react. The next thing he saw was a downward swing of what appeared to be a walking stick. With no time to intercept with his saber, Aurelio instinctively raised his forearm to block the blow.
