How do you name your character?

[member="Jack Mirrikh"]
Admittedly, I did not intentionally reference anything in my post. But if it makes me cool we can pretend I did.
As for my signature, I'm not currently aware of the origins of most of the images I used for it. The background is fan art for the horror game Kholat, the gif on the right was found by searching "sniper gif", and the image on the left was found by searching for "sci fi sniper".

I kind of just sit around and wait for a name to come to me that's random enough to sound science fantasy-ish. Every so often I'll use a real name that comes to me when I'm thinking about a character concept.

Nubica Felidae

We are well and truly forked...
Most of my characters are animal's names initially. Maja was the exception as most of her names are Darth Zannah inspired (her 'real name' is Pluvia for example).

Nubica Felidae includes two variations for a lion. Which fitted the character I wanted. Ater Nochetis? A highly venomous snake.

Melori Raaf? Melori is the name of the little raven.

They tend to work that way.

Darth names are either Latin or Sith. Timoris means the owner of fear in Latin. Zilti means rain in Sith.

Shards are easy. They don't require a surname, so I just have to come up with a first name that fits the character. For Iron Knights, it's a lightsaber crystal. For NFUs, something vaguely droid-y.

Thurion Heavenshield:
  • "Thurion" I got from playing Warcraft III, in which there is a character called Malfurion, or Furion. It's pronounced the same (fury-on), only spelled differently.
  • "Heavenshield" I just made up as my stereotypical Paladin name when playing games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. It has since been my go-to hero name.
  • I then used the name in Star Wars: The Old Republic for my Jedi Knight character, after which I learned about this site and made a young version of him.
Thyrian Ashborn:
  • I wanted Thurion's brother to have a similar name, so I just altered the spelling into "Thyrian", pronounced (tyrian).
  • "Ashborn" was based on him being literally reborn from the remains of his charred corpse by Sith alchemists and scientists.
Thrand Dawnbringer:
  • This one I made up on the spot while making the father of the two brothers. I wanted to keep the same formula, so "Thrand" just came to mind.
  • "Dawnbringer" was much the same, made up on the spot. All three surnames are gifted by their peers, as is Valkyri tradition, so there was no overarching family name to consider.
Nina Heavenshield:
  • The adopted daughter of Thurion, "Nina" just came from me and her initial writer, [member="Kyra Sol"], brainstorming cute names for little girls.
  • While she now shares the same surname as her father, before they met she was of the Vi'dreya family, and the much younger half-sister of [member="Kära Vi'dreya"].

So yeah, when it comes down to it I just go by what I think sounds good when you say it aloud. :)

Malik is actually Arabic for King. I came up with the name Malek originally but I always use that name so I wanted to use something close to it instead.

Krest was from a random name generator on Wow. It's been my favored named for characters since I found it 6 or so years ago.

Ferus was a name given by Vulcanus. I didn't actually name her.

Most names of characters I use are from random name generators though. I can't think up my own.

for all my characters, both on site and in table top rp (there are a lot more on table top rp :D) I just pick a concept and form a name around it.

James Justice, I wanted to be a criminal who was basically a vigilante. So the name "James" applies. Its a Hebrew name meaning "supplanter" so I thought that worked, especially because he is pretty lawless and will seize most anything, the only ethics he has you can spread on a cracker. However, he is the "people's criminal" so he fights with a cause, so his last name is "Justice." Then "Captain" came a long because I had a friend who we called "Captain Justice," he was my favorite theater teacher!

Akio Diachi I looked up the Japanese names for "warrior" and decided the two that worked the best together. That was again, off of his concept.

On table top RP I have a character who is a half-orc fighter. He wields the ax like no one else in the universe. He is a vigilante who is ugly as anything like Azog. Of of that I named him Zorog Ironaxxe.

Kind how I roll ;)

Zarack - Zack. (First name that came to mind).

Karrus - Kieran (Name of a former role-playing character from Jedi Knight Academy).

Zorathi - This was the surname of a side-character that I role-played in Jedi Knight Academy for a community holding a mission set.

Danger Arceaneau came from "Dangeruese" from a character in a book. I wanted a smuggler type char, and Arceaneau basically means "a family of gunsmiths "

And I just love the fact her nickname is Danger. Really suits her.

Moira Vu Noi was a name I made up. Moira I just loved the name, Vu Noi just rolled off the tongue well.

My darth name of Isolda was given to me by her master at her knighthood by Darth Apparatus.

Firstly I like to figure out what kinda person I am making. The name needs to fit the face, I feel.

Jerrick Shado was my first RP character ever, and I was going with something sci-fiy and Star Wars like.

My ex fiance, and I decided we were going to name our first son Jerrick, Jarred, and Derrick put together. Shado comes from a alter of my middle name, Shade.

So thus, Jerrick Shado.

Romeo Sin was my next character, I enjoyed the name Romeo, and the story of Romeo and Juliet. Sin came from the idea that Romeo and Juliet were committing a sin, and when I put the two together is just sounded cool to me, and I knew this was going to be my Dark Jedi.

For other characters, I tend to take a letter, and begin with that for their first name, then try to figure out what real names can be altered in a way to make it feel more Star Wars. Then I pick another letter, and start figuring out how to make the last name roll well with the first name.

There you have it.

The secret behind my first two most successful characters' names.

I first come on these boards with a totally new character. Iella E'ron. I basically came up with the name which took a while until I thought it sounded nice to say. I RPed her only for some time.

But before her I had Coci. On other boards I had killed her off, she was then a NFU and a very good one. But I missed her and so decided to bring her back here, this time as a Jedi and different from before. The first part of the name was inspired by my favourite perfume, you might be able to guess it, the surname made up pretty much. Heavenshield now, because over her history here she has married. No guesses to who! :p

Theodred (Theo) was discussed with Thruion and we both liked the idea of sticking with the 'Th' tradition of the family. And I must say it suits him.

All other alts are made up by me.

Vazela

OOC Writer Account
When I think of something evil and twisted incarnate, I think of the name [member="Vilox Pazela"]. Just the way the name rolls off the tongue sounds twisted, to me at least. I came up with Darth Vazela because V-azela.

[member="Darth Ayra"] was a name given to me by another Sith writer I used to roleplay with, when we did a Rule of Two on another site. As a testimony to that particular writer, the name stuck. I came up with [member="Alicia Drey"] because I thought the two names went well together.

[member="Ella Nova"] sounds like a name a Jedi would have. I also wanted to play on the idea of lighting up the darkness. Supernovas can be quite bright, you know?

[member="Malus"] I don't really remember how I came up with this. His surname is meant to be Bligh, but I decided to make him on a Chiss on Chaos because I am quite a fan of Admiral Thrawn.

[member="Dianna LaCroix"] is NFSW in the explanation, but for those in the know, know.

[member="Vupua"] I was playing a lot of SW:TOR and I had to come up with a name for my Sith Sorcerer. A random name generator produced Vupua and I decided I liked it.

Am I the only one who kind of thinks this is funny?

As for my name, Tachon was kind of a toss around. I forget how I came up with it, something to do with Archon and Tachyon and playing around with powerful sounds. Zur is a common Zabraki surname, and -Ksi is an IC/backstory thing.
