Invasion of Alderaan, faction talk

The Invasion of Alderaan!
cutscene2.jpg
Hello all! :)

Excuse the wall of text but special circumstances and all sorta makes it valid.

Alright we got an unusual invasion coming up. I know lots of folk are experienced with invasions but we also have many new members that has not been part of invasions before. On top of that this invasion is unique in the sense that it hopefully can be concluded without combat but rather at the negotiation table.

NOTE!
This thread is only for writers that want to participate in the invasion on the GR side and wanting to try to contribute to the story. I am fully aware many writers feel this invasion has its drawbacks and I will adress some of them below from an as neutral position as possible. But thats it, no further complaints around this please. Go to the public forums if you have a need to do so. This is also meant as a thread for internal GR discussions. I know loads of writers that are not actively working for the Republic that loves to pop in with your view on things but please let us have a place to discuss our own point of view in here. You may of course contribute as a neutral part but as most know things can easily turn into OOC drama if wrong things are adressed in the wrong place.
Lets be creative and productive in this thread. If you violate this request I will look very sternly at you and most likely not comb my beard for several hours!

Storywise
From a Republic perspective
The Alderaan noble houses has become displeased with the Galactic Republic for many excellent reasons. It lead to that the houses asked for the Republic to back away with their military support on the planet.
The Republic did so leaving the planet alone.
once Alderaan distanced itself from the Republic it invited Mandalorians to come and protect them. Most assume its out of fear that the Republic would force Alderaan to stay in the commonwealth against its will. Mandalorians arrive to Alderaan and set up a blocade as well as install themselves in the planetary defence systems on the planet, next to the Alderaan local defence force.
Now the Mandalorian are the strongest military presence in Alderaan space and on the planet.
The Mandalorians followed this up with having extended an offer to the Alderaan noble houses to join the Mandalorian worlds instead in exchange for protection.

If the Republic would wish to try and keep the planet by force (something we dont see happening atm) we would de facto have to invade the planet in order to defend it. Yes folks, we end up attacking our own planet, again... Accept it and move on.

But Instead of sending a rage attack in response, the Galactic Republic now sends diplomats to Alderaan to try and convince the nobles of Alderaan to not leave the Republic. The Mandalorian will consider any GR military presence as an act of agression and so the GR cant send a fleet or army in for as long as Alderaan dont ask for it. The political field is hot like lava from mustafaar and the military is kept away to avoid a happy trigger ending any chances of getting Alderaan back into the Republic.

How to get involved?

Military/combat folk - Despite all, we got a more detailed description on how to work this out if it turns into a military invasion then as a diplomatic meeting.
Any Military writer are encouraged to read the invasion terms just in case this turns into a hostile take over. Those terms are pretty clear and straight forward.
No one is to Role lay an official GR military force attacking the mandalorians without proper IC sanctions by the senate or military high command. If Alderaan noble houses ask for help the table is turned however and we can consider it defending Republic soil which is standard procedure.

I think its fair to assume that while the GR Military is not engaging with hostilities toward the Mando blocade the Fleet is on high alert ready to jump into position should the invasion-story lead to such a development. As a military character you can use the beginning of the invasion to do some casual on the bridge RP while on stand by or simply sit back and dont write unless the invasion turn into a combat oriented affair.

Diplomats - As a diplomat it means that you as writer will have to swing it a bit and try to contact either Alderaan nobles or Mandalorian diplomats as you go. Naturally you can use this thread for questions or ideas. Hopefully there will be some sort of location/room presented someehwere on Alderaan on perhaps on a neutral location nearby where you can go to and participate.
Maybe [member="Alyesa Organa"] or [member="Faith Balor-Organa"] could help both our factions out a bit here?

We currently lack such directions from the invasion description. Hence, flying toward Alderaan in your first post seem like the way to go if no other option is given.

This is an odd position for the Republic. Sending in the diplomats without much protection is a dangerous act and your character should be aware of the risk it means.
Use your imagination here... the Mandalorians are honorable in general but they are also dark siders with sith lords on key positions. Nothing wrong with that at all and its thats faction privilege. But be aware that stuff may blow up, and if you join this invasion as a diplomat you need to be open minded and accept that you have put your character in a risky spot. Its the frame work that is set by the invasion terms.

Notable OOC rules

No other thread then the actual Invasion thread will determine the outcome of an invasion. I am not saying its fair to you that are trying in other threads, but thats how it works with invasion rules.

However, the story you bring with your from other threads can influence yours and others behaviour/decission during the invasion. So, the negotiations could be very short if you already decided stuff in before hand. Do not assume that your work in other threads will matter unless it is shown in the actual invasion thread that will open on the 6th.

  • The invasion starts the 6th. Thats when the official Invasion thread will be up in the public forums.
  • After two weeks (presumably on the 20th) the invasion ends and the OOC staff from both factions decides which side won. Exactly how to decide on this is not decided so we will just have a friendly discussion trying to discern which way Alderaan leans at that point.
  • Again, if you have not participated in the invasion thread, your efforts may not count toward the outcome of this invasion. Continue any pre-invasion RP that you think matters inside the invasion thread please.

No one has done an invasion like this before and I am sure it will be fun, but we also need to try and follow the talks and figure out how to resolve it as we go.
If you got any questions, lets discuss!

Here is the link to the OOC declaration of the invasion that the Mandalorian faction posted on the 27th of february. LINK
That is where you can find the military terms as well.

Good luck everyone and it sure will be interesting to follow! :)

Appology for anyone I missed.

I will be there.

Do people think it would be alright if I wrote having a bodyguard? Specifically not the normal Senate Guard, but rather some sort of Justice Department Marshal. Specifically a not-military person, and the plan would be to use my portions of the invasion that deal with my bodyguard as part of a development for said Justice Department Marshals.

Aside from that, do people want to point to who they wish to approach on the diplomatic side? Khyros is fine approaching any of the Royal ladies, Queen or Princesses, as well as any Mandalorian commander/diplomat.

Well put. I'd like to be a part of the Republic delegation sent to Alderaan.

Also, is there going to be a cap on the amount of people sent? I can see where having too many people might bog things down ICly, but on the flip side this is a big event and we want to get everyone that wants to involved..

[member="Khyros Sunblade"]

Slipped in there hehe

I'd say it depends. Are they armed? Having armed guards could be seen as an escalation, even if only precautions. We're approaching in good faith and showing up with armed guards may sour things before they start. I think it's the perfect opportunity to get some development done for them, but unfortunately given the sensitive nature of these negotiations, I'd err on the side of caution and say it's best not to. I'm not sure that non-military affiliation would help either, because the presence of force is still there.

If you're insistent on having one, I would write them as an assistant or something of the like. Such a person would not be out of place among the delegation, and it could serve as development for an undercover or clandestine operation by the Ministry of Justice - perhaps in coordination with the Ministry of Intelligence.

As far as who we specifically talk to, I'm open. Someone Mandalorian would probably be best, but anyone is fine.

[member="Gael bar Ammon"]

I definitely understand the point, it is the reason I both posed the question and desire it to not be a Senate Guard (who are ostensibly part of the military).

The thing is, this is a slippery slope in my mind. In a real situation, any mission that a US diplomat goes into would at least have a single bodyguard, if not an entire company of Marines. I don't much mind slipping out of the real from time to time (this being Science Fantasy after all), but I don't know if not having at least one guard for each diplomat would be a good thing.

Devil's advocate on them seeing it as aggression would be that going in with a delegation completely unarmed could be seen as a sign of hubris to the warrior culture of the Mandalorians. It is a no win situation if they want to be persnickety about it. We bring guards, they say it's a provocation. We don't bring guards, they say we have as little respect for their prowess as our former Supreme Commander.

At this point, I don't know how they would respond one way or the other. That should be handled IC anyway.

TL;DR This is really just a shrug of me not knowing what to do about it.

[member="Khyros Sunblade"]

Well, in real situations, I can say with certainty that an entire company of Marines is definitely not mobilized for diplomatic missions or serve as an attache to dignitaries. That's 3-4 platoons of 30+ troops plus equipment and armor which is definitely more than a precaution. I know you're referring to the embassy guards, however that's all they are..guards. Since embassies are technically US soil, that is where they remain. I can't think of any instance in which the Marines would accompany State Department officials, unless it was Afghanistan or some other hostile territory.

I don't think it matters who it is guarding you. It's like swapping out a Marine for a private contractor, and there's only two differences between the two - government affiliation and rules of engagement.

If anything, I'll poke around with a couple Mando higher ups and inquire about the Mandalorian presence to armed guards. That should at the very least give us an idea as to how they might react IC.

The one thing my conservative self would be comfortable with with the information we have now is showing up with an armed entourage, however leaving them with the ship. It's a bit of a show of force at the beginning, but also a show of good faith when we abandon their security to show a genuine willingness and desire for a peaceful solution.

Kay won't be taking part as she has no place in gov't, so I have little say in the matter. But what about bringing an agent from GRIMM in lieu of guards? They are not military as far as I know, and are very well trained for this sort of thing without being intimidating enough to spark a conflict.

Aight. I may drop by just for you Mantic <3

[member="Khyros Sunblade"] [member="Gael bar Ammon"]
I'd advice to wait until the OOC thread is opened up again before deciding on the bodyguard issue.
From my perspective it would be highly likely to have bodyguards on both sides attending the meeting.
Mantic usually goes around escorting senators as part of his service to the republic.
So I would have loved to be one myself in this invasion, but I am going to be careful around it since we dont know how it would be interpreted.

[member="Lady Kay"] [member="Rexus Drath"] - could you check via your negotiation pm about how the mandos feel around this? Meanwhile prepare for both scenarios....

[member="Lady Kay"]

I'd say that you should reapply for a position in the government. Perhaps within the Justice Ministry? Khyros and Kay could work something out if you'd like that approach.

[member="Gael bar Ammon"]

I have a habit of exaggerating things a bit, my apologies. I've served, and I realize how outlandish my statement was.

[member="draco vereen"]

In the OOC, absolutely nothing. IC, they add to the sense that the story is real. I am all about the story, and I'd like to start Deving up the Justice Ministry. Khyros would neither plan, nor condone an Assassination attempt IC, nor would I attempt such OOC. I just want to use every opportunity I have to make a story more believable.

[member="Suravi Teigra"]

I'm just saying. I'm not saying you can't or don't, I'm only trying to offer a little devil's advocate. Personally, I've always had Draco accompanied by at least one guard (normally a pilot since he can't fly), so I'm with you there.

As it stands, Kay is not aware of the new law regarding Force Users and isn't in Republic space. Only her allies from elsewhere have reached out to offer help after she lost everything. [member="Faith Balor-Organa"] was starting an attempt, but that thread has stalled due to another writer's LOA.

And with how badly I've handled negotiations with the Mandos both IC and OOC, I am not the right fit for this. I just offered a suggestion.
