New ways to Dominion

[member="Cryax Bane"]

Definitely, and we're doing something similar on our Rhad dominion.

I was just curious as to getting other factions/groups of players involved; the norm is good and all, still leaves plenty room for imagination, but I'd still like to see new ways for major factions (and even minors) to interact with each other in dominions that isn't just low stakes.

That quote is out of context - it concerns only Dominions being done as a race against another faction. Those usually turn into invasions.
I do apologise :)

Where is the context for that line in the rules for what opposition means?

Label your faction's name, the planet, and the opposing faction (if there is one) in the topic title. Acquisitions will not be awarded in the future if this is not adhered to.
Relates to:

4. If you finish a dominion within 30 minutes of a faction finishing a dominion on the same planet, an Invasion thread for the planet must be initiated to decide ownership of the planet.
Because:

Other factions may not interrupt a faction's Dominion thread.
However, it can relate also to the fact that It is possible for another faction to be in a dominion, but they cannot prevent the attacker winning it.

Why must be restrict our thinking on dominions to simple invasions? I think that's rather narrow-minded, after-all historically Austria and the Habsburgs managed to inherit vast swathes of territory and become one of the most dominant powers in Europe through marriage, election and politicking - most of the time without even firing a shot. Why not, for more peaceful factions, introduce a sort of diplomatic dominion?

Say the Republic wants planet Redshirtous IV of the proud Redshirtian peoples. The Republic can peacefully send a delegation and offer trading rights, protection etc for the planet joining the Republic. This would allow, potentially, allow a entire planet to be taken without the significant resources, damage and bad PR image of a blitzkrieg, if a roleplay judge or someone else NPCs the government as being accepting of the terms. As a down-side, if the Sith also wants the planet, they could send a delegation themselves and either sabotage the Republic's ambassadors, offer better (and more costly) terms or both. Once again, what side the planet ultimately joins could be decided by a roleplay judge or neutral party - or, one side could escalate the conflict into full-blown war leading into a regular invasion.

Just a idea. (and excuse me if we already have this sort of thing.)

People already do that in dominions, a dominion can be roleplayed just about any way, but there are a few things that remain true OOCly that must be met ICly. 100 posts, 5 writers, and a believable story. My original point was to suggest that Dominions could use similar or the same rules as invasions in case two factions wanted to contest over a neutral world, rather than spend time making their 100 posts and then doing an invasion if they finish within 30 minutes of each other.

Dominions aren't that common anymore - the best planets are taken, and the ones which are left are usually grabbed quickly for strategic reasons.

Once the event comes though it might make things easier though.

So rules as they are:

So there is already the hook for opposition in the rules.

You'd need something like: If the faction undertaking the dominion agrees, objectives may be set that enable the opposing faction to prevent successful dominion.

Although actually, I'm not even sure you'd need to add any rules. This could easily be trialled with a Major Faction now, all that would happen is you get agreement with the Faction Admin that they don't update the map if the opposition wins based on the criteria. That way, there's no need to get Staff to tweak rules and you can show this is viable beforehand!
Didn't we just do something like this a week ago?

I don't see any ideas presented that aren't already possible in Dominions, unless I skipped one by accident...

Free your minds, my people. The rules aren't restricting you, you are.

"What if two Major Factions OOCly agreed before hand; would that constitute as enough to get permission for two factions to have an invasion over a neutral world?"

So those are possible?

I wouldn't have a problem with that, no.

And I would advise any other Staff member that it would be a waste of our time to impede any factions who wished to do that, so long as the agreement was made prior between the two parties.
