Private Not Far Enough

"Dee ap-xmasi partu dooah. Mee am do wee shahnit um nopa do Barr aptu!"

Vetru gave a gentle shrug. This was turning into an absolutely farcical situation but perhaps it was a good distraction. There was a Quickfire holdout blaster up his left sleeve. If the rodian turned away there was a small opportunity.

"He says he's a bounty hunter and not a taxi driver," Vetru clarified. He tried to remain as nonchalant as possible whilst watching the rodian very carefully.

Wrenarias clicked her tongue and gave an almost disappointed sigh. It had been a long shot that the rodian would agree, of course; but she'd been hoping that he would have been a bit more open to negotiation. His indignant response was not unexpected, but it was far from her only option.

Her eyes turned casually to the smuggler, a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

"You had a ship. Right?"

The rodian made a particularly derisive noise. He shook his head at the twi'lek and then grabbed Vetru around the arm again.

"He says you're not to talk to his bounty."

Vetru gave an apologetic shrug. He tried not to grin. He wasn't even sure what it was about the situation that amused him. The entire thing was rather farcical.

"How do you think I got here?" Vetru replied.

"I'm talking to the taxi driver." Wrenarias countered back to the rodian, idly twirling the strange baton in her hand.

The entire situation was farcical, but largely because the twi'lek enjoyed stirring the pot every so often. She had to find some sort of entertainment from time to time. Of course she knew damn well that the zabrak had a ship, she also knew that he'd be far more likely to give her a ride if she helped him deal with his bounty hunter problem. As far as she was concerned, it was a win-win for everyone involved--except for the rodian, that was.

But, to be fair, she had given the bounty hunter a chance to take her up on the offer first. His loss.

"Isn't that right?" She asked, looking to Vetru with a perked brow. "You did offer me a ride off world. Didn't you?" A slight stretch of the truth, but depending on the answer she received, she'd know what her next move was going to be.

It was up to Vetru if he wanted her help or not.

Wretched Vampire
Vetru was starting to wonder if she was merely trying to distract the rodian enough that he could make a break for it. He couldn't see how she was going to deal with the bounty hunter with a small metal stick. Perhaps it was actually a pipe bomb and she was going to test his mettle.

The rodian retorted again, this time his tone was sharp. He rattled off a string of expletives. One of them even made Vetru's eyes go wide.

"Well, I am not repeating that...and yes I am offering a ride off world. Or I was. He really does want you to go away now," Vetru said.

That pretty much settled that. There was no point begging with the Rodian, not when she had another ride already lined up -- especially one that didn't come with a language barrier. She didn't speak fluent rodese, but she knew enough to pick up on the general consensus of an adamant "kriff off".

With an exaggerated sigh, Wren tossed her hands into the air and turned as if she was going to simply walk off back to town -- which was behind the Rodian and Vetru. "Fine, fine. I'm going."

All she needed was the forward momentum and the few steps towards their flank. There was a subtle shift in her stance as she sulked off, pivoting midstep to launch herself towards the Rodian, swinging the blunt weapon in her hand towards his head.

Vetru saw where this was going more quickly than the Rodian. He did not know much about the twi'lek, but she was determined to get off this rock. Determined and most definitely not a typical salvage operator.

Whilst Vetru anticipated what was coming next, the rodian was quick to react. The muzzle of the rifle swung around quickly. What this did was provide an opening for Vetru. He lifted his heel up high and slammed it sown into the side of the rodian's knee.

The bounty hunter cried out, his blaster bolt firing off into the sky. There was a thunk as the metal struck the bounty hunter. Vetru had knocked the rodian off balance so Wrenarias' strike lost some of its sting.

The rifle clattered to the ground. Vetru was quick to slam his heel down onto it as the bounty hunter stumbled back, reaching for a knife.

As the rodian stumbled backwards, thrown off balance from the strike he'd just taken, Wren pressed the attack. She didn't want to kill the bounty hunter; he was just a man doing his job after all. That didn't mean, however, that he'd feel the same way about her.

With the rifle out of his hand he was less dangerous, but still a threat. Wrenarias surged forward, aiming to keep the alien off balance as he drew the knife. He swung for her face, specifically her eyes, Wren noted as she ducked to the left to avoid the blade and slammed the hilt into his side. There was a distinct crunch from the blow and the rodian gave a wet gasp -- she'd broken a few ribs.

Following through with the momentum, the twi'lek attempted to force him to the ground, kicking at the knee that Vetru had already struck once. He dropped to dust as his leg gave out beneath him, thrusting his blade towards Wren's exposed abdomen. Forced to twist away or risk disembowelment, Wren whirled away from the rodian, kicking sand into his large, bug-like eyes as she went.

He shouted, turning his head away.

By the time he regained his bearings and turned back to continue the fight, he found a blaster pointed at his face.

"Sure you want to keep going down this road?" Wren demanded, holding the blaster steady.

Any notion of helping went away in short order. With a few well placed strikes she had the rodian on the ground. At this point Vetru would have put a blaster bolt through the hunter, but he supposed the twi'lek wasn't the one being chased down.

"Might want to put a stun round in him anyway," Vetru tentatively suggested. He kept a safe distance from the pair, hands obviously out to his sides to make sure everyone knew he wasn't planning anything.

"And, er, getting off this rock sounds good to me," he added sharply. "Without another ship on our tail."

"Sorry about this." Wren muttered, setting the blaster to stun with a quick flip of a switch on the side of the grip. The distinct retort of blaster fire barked through the air and the bounty hunter fell unconscious to the ground. She genuinely did feel a little bad about the fight, but she had given him a chance.

The short metal staff that she carried condensed back in on itself, contracting until it was only a few inches in length. She tucked it away inside her jacket and then turned to look over her shoulder at Vetru.

"Right. Let's get a move on then. No time to waste, is there?" She asked with a crooked grin.

Vetru didn't feel bad about the stun shot. He made a gesture that was very crude among zabrak towards the prone rodian. Vetru watched the twi'lek slip the baton away.

"Why exactly are you stuck on this rock?" he asked suspiciously. If she was another bounty hunter then this was a very strange con to bring him in.

He led them through the waste through the dark skeletons of ships that had been or would be. The bright crimson of his ship stared to appear as a sliver on the horizon.

"I caught a ride here a few months back, haven't been able to find another one off world yet." She explained with a sardonic smile, following along after the zabrak.

Now that the fighting was over, she seemed more at ease, friendly even. She dusted off her jacket and then adjusted her gloves. "Came here looking for someone... but she wasn't here." She added further information a few moments later, a dejected sigh escaping her lips.

"So, was... a bit of a waste of time, but that's nothing new. Can't exactly wallow in defeat, otherwise I wouldn't ever get anything done." The twi'lek continued, donning a warm smile. "Didn't you come here for something?"

"Yup," he replied jovially. "They can send an encrypted comm over the holonet if they really have to. I'm not sticking around!"

Even if the rodian left it stood to reason that he might not have been the only hunter to know where he was. As soon as they were away he needed to put out feelers to find out what this bounty was about. There were so many incidents over the past year that there was no point trying to guess.

"No touching anything on the Azimuth," he said as they approached. It was obvious up close that he took the time to ensure it kept a clean coat of paint adonized to the hull.

"Enneye," open the ramp.

The twi’lek smirked at Vetru’s insistence that she not touch anything. Chuckling quietly, she raised her hands up to her shoulders with a bemused expression to show that she had no such intention of touching his ship.

“Don’t worry, won’t lay a finger on her. Cross my heart.” She said, tracing one of her index fingers across her chest for emphasis.

Wren followed him up to the ship, sweeping her eyes over the vibrant hull.

“Oh, she’s gorgeous though.”

---

Vetru shot her a sideways glance, smiling out of the corner of his mouth.

"It's alright, you already earned the ride!" he laughed. The ramp hissed closed behind them. The inside of the ship was not as crisp and clean as the outside. Dull bare metal walls and warm lighting made it almost murky. When you were smuggling there was no benefit to bright white walls and crisp lighting that highlighted the hidden compartments.

Enneye twittered loudly as it bobbed in the air beside them. Its lens turned rather pointedly to look at Wrenarias.

"Yes she's coming with us Enneye," Vetru said, accelerating his pace towards the cockpit. "You even get a room…" he added, waving to the door to the left of the cockpit. Two cabins were sat just behind and to either side of the cockpit. In a larger crew they would have been for captain and pilot so they were next door should there be an emergency.

"Where are you heading?" he asked, dropping into the pilot's seat. Three were arranged in a triangle, pilot at the front.

Vetru flicked several switches above his head. There was a low thrum before a high pitched whine. The engines stalled. He moved all the switches back to their starting positions.

He picked a different order of switches and the vessel came to life.

"It does that," he muttered.

---

She paused long enough to peek her head into the room that Vetru pointed out as hers, then moved to follow him into the cockpit. The little Droid, Enneye, hovered alongside them, catching her eye. Wren had an affinity for droids and was quite fond of them.

While he struggled to get the ship's engines running, Wrenarias moved to take one of the open seats and buckled in. Judging by the misfire, this was going to be a rather bumpy lift off.

"You know… I could take a look at that once we're off world. See if I can keep it from doing that?" The offer was genuine and she grinned slightly from behind the pilot.

"Or, y'know, I can just sit here quietly and twiddle my thumbs."

She didn't say where she was headed, because she genuinely didn't know yet.

---

Vetru pulled back on the stick. In contrast to the stuttered start the engines purred as it smoothly lifted away.

"Na, I like it this way," he replied. With his right hand he angled the ship away from the world, his lift danced across the controls and started the navicomp on its calculations.

Nothing bleeped at him. At least not yet. If am ambush was coming it would be before he had the time to make the jump.

---

Wren held her breath as the ship lifted away from the rock of a planet, subtly gripping the armrests of her chair. While she loved machinery and cybernetics, she had a distrust for pilots she didn't know. Call it a survival instinct.

"So… why exactly did you have a guild bounty Hunter on your tail?" She asked, trying to keep her voice as casually conversational as she could.

---

"Is a very good question," he replied. "Not that I've kept entirely clean exactly. More that..i don't remember anything bad enough to deserve being chased all the way out here, you know?"

He hit two buttons and the ship beeped back at him. A small light flashed yellow. When it went green they could jump.

"You know…people normally ask why I like it that way…" Vetru sounded slightly disappointed that she hadn't.

---

She chuckled quietly, shaking her head. "Guess I figured you just like the drama of it."

"Makes it harder to steal too." She mused, glancing around the cockpit.

"Where are you hoping to get to? Won't be long until another Hunter comes looking."

---

Vetru looked mildly crestfallen that her second guess was spot on.

"Well...yes…" he muttered under his breath.

His console lit up. The holographic image of another ship appeared to their right. Vetru looked indifferent.

"Might be the rodian. Might be another Hunter. They've locked on, but they're not going to get close enough."

Vetru placed his hand on a heavy silver lever. As he eased it forwards the engines roared. The distance between themselves and the pursuing ship extended.

"I'm going to Sullust next," he said.

---

Wren looked to the holo-image of the newly appeared ship, frowning slightly. While Vetru might have been confident of their escape, she wasn’t as convinced -- not with how the Azimuth had performed so far. The ship had plenty of personality, for sure, but it seemed as likely to leave her pilot stranded as soaring away to freedom.

“What at Sullust?” She asked absently, watching the distance between the two ships intently.

---

"Don't look so worried," he laughed. "Look!" he reached across Wren and tapped at a bank of back-lit buttons. The number of kilometers between them was brought up in a large holographic. The other ship was not gaining.

"Red ones always go faster," he chuckled. "Since the Alliance collapsed Sullust has a lot of industry under the surface. And volcanoes. Lots of those."

Wren blinked several times at Vetru's remark about 'Red ones always going faster'. She didn't know the man well enough to tell whether or not if was joking. He seemed utterly lackadaisical and carefree, as if nothing that was happening was of any real consequence. The attitude was both concerning and refreshing all at once.

She chuckled softly and forced herself to sit back into the chair, shaking her head.

"I'm not sure that's how it works exactly, but we'll go with that for now. Since the theory seems to be holding up." There was a slight pause and her lips pursed a little, a thought popping into her head.

"So... what happens when someone chasing you also has a red ship?"

"You see many red ships?" he asked. He turned towards her as if it was a very silly suggestion. Without looking at the console he slowly drove the hyperspace jump lever forwards. The pinpricks of distant stars stretched out to infinity and were replaced with the cerulean swirls of hyperspace.

"Wasnt even worth his fuel chasing us," he proclaimed.

"Plenty of traffic comes through Sullust, but after that I might be straying into the Core of its civilisation you actually want to reach?"

The twi'lek exhaled a soft breath as the ship leapt into hyperspace, it was relatively safe there. She ran both her hands over her lekku, trailing fingers along the length of each appendage and pulled them over her shoulders so that she could properly lean into the back of the chair without crushing them.

"Perhaps. I haven't been to the Core in... a long time. What's on Sullust though? I assume you've some sort of job lined up?" She asked with a perked brow.

While she wanted to get up and explore the ship, she stayed put in her chair. Vetru had made it rather clear he didn't want her to touch anything on board; and she was worried about upsetting the guy who was giving her a free ride.

"Plenty of industry on Sullust. This ship can't move any huge cargo but there's always something to take from Sullust to the outer rim. Sometimes it's small expensive components and sometimes it's information. Either way, I've got a few friends there to talk to."

He also had a few people who were not friends who he was going to have to avoid. Vetru preferred not to think about that side of it. It was the same on almost every world he frequented. The trick, he had found, was to make more friends as you crossed people who became enemies.

"So you've got no place in mind? Just anywhere but that dustball you were stuck on?" he asked. Vetru lifted a short lever to lock the controls. He swivelled his chair and stuff up, heading for the galley.

"No, not yet. I'm still working on a few leads." She replied, shaking her head.

The woman quirked her mouth a little to the side, chewing the inside of her cheek. Her situation was difficult to explain, and she didn't feel like she should get into the details with the zabrak. Considering the bounty hunters after him, she reasoned he was prone to getting into trouble. Her hands tucked away inside the pockets of her jacket, making herself as small as she could.

"If you don't want me to stick around after Sullust, I understand though. Thanks for giving me the ride in the first place." She said a moment later with a warm smile.

"Ah, it's not like it uses any more fuel and you brighten the place up," he mused, flashing Wren a subtle smirk and continuing into the ship.

The galley was composed of single round table and benches anchored down with a long strip of rehydrators, fridges, freezers and cupboards along one wall. Clearly the ship was large enough for a crew of six.

"Beer?" he called over his shoulder as he opened the fridge. It had been a long day. Someone had nearly killed him.

Admittedly that was at least one day a week.
