In a competitive PVP setting, how often would you say one of your characters has taken a serious hit

people are afraid to let their character get a boo-boo
that's true

I love PvP and I don't care if my character gets hurt or even gets a limb cut off. My only rule in PvP is don't kill my character, but that's not allowed without permission anyway so it's all good.

If anyone ever wants a PvP, call me ;)

This is the first board I've ever written on where PVP was spontaneous and not planned or storyboarded in advance.

In other boards I've written on, if two (or more) characters were engaged in a combat scene, those writers were either actively discussing the progress of that scene or had previously planned it and the result.

So, I honestly avoid PVP here as much as I possibly can, because I don't like that I'm not in control of my character's future. Not that my character cannot or will not fail, nor that my character cannot and will not die... but I want some control over how that develops, how it adds to the plot, etc. As a result, I join Dominions frequently, but I typically abstain from Invasions or Skirmishes.

Not that I think it's bad, it's just not what I'm used to and not how I care to approach crafting a scene for my characters. Or how I care to go about interacting with other writers.

As long as it makes sense in the over-all story we are aiming for, I am happy to lose PvP or even win. Connor may be a Master, but he's never won a PvP, but in losing it has shaped his story even more and given him emotional and physical scars that go to making him stronger and more resilient. I don't really want to die in this creative galaxy we write in, but I've had so many nasty wounds and injuries, it all makes me think more about how to write Connor in future, and how it affects him which is what a good duel should leave both parties feeling - each battle in the SW universe has lasting effects on both combatants which I find interesting and fun to discover how it changes and moulds them in future.

I don't PvP much, first because I'm not the most confident of writers and feel I'd probably let the other writer down, and because I don't want to do it and then come up against some hulking technological warmonger with 3 lightsabers or a rocket cannon who can just blow everything up or move faster than Superman in a fight. Connor isn't THAT stupid IC and at least aims for confrontations that make sense and he'd have a chance with.

But, as is always the way, we are here to write and have fun - if it becomes something far more personal or vindictive then I won't bother. I want to plug my headphones in and crank up some John Williams music and lose myself in the fun and excitement of a duel I can try and picture as if it was on screen - detail and thought and creativity through words.

One day I hope to win a PvP battle. But only if it's right, not by just "wanting" to. It doesn't make me feel less of a moderate writer if I lose more than win.

:)

Firstly for me its give and take in combat threads. If you never take a hit, nobody wants to write with you because you give your thread partner nothing to write with.

Happy to lose but I only write for story usually, so it makes a lot of my answers neutral. If it makes sense storywise for a character to lose they lose no question, if it makes sense storywise or a nice twist for my character to meet an unfortunate end i'll often message the person I am threading with. Other than that I just try and make a fight or thread interesting for both of us. If I outmatch someone at the start (Master vs Knight) I'll make the environment hazardous for my character, or throw them a few NPCs to help, or suggest another PC aids them, that kind of thing.

In fact [member="Raien Keth"] became so wounded because I had him lose a lot of combat threads, I reversed the entire dynamic so that each time he lost he became stronger, using the wounds in the next fight (fun angle to use for character development)

All I am going to say is I have on two occasions once here and once in a non SW site intentionally let a character die for story purposes in a PvP setting. Characters come and go but epic story lives forever.

I have been a part of far more boards than I care to admit and been numerous PvP threads. Some I thoroughly enjoy and others, not so much. Most fights I have won were hard earned, some through story reasons, and some because default (other person lost interest or LOA). I have had characters torn apart through being outwitted or outmatched through fantastic writing and same as the wins, I've had losses over story or I lose interest or disappear.

Overall I would say I'm in a middle and my enjoyment/competitive excitement depends on whom I am writing with.

I LIVE FOR THIS S&%T.

In all seriousness, 1v1 PvP is my favourite form of RP. I don't take it seriously per se, but I write it pretty competitively, trying to remain within the bounds of reason, fairness, and what my character could legitimately be expected to do. However.

All of my favourite duels have been draws or losses. Na'Varro vs [member="Ashin Varanin"] was epic, [member="Raien Keth"] pretty much took Alen's soul when he was a lower level Knight on another board, another Sith on that board put his lightsaber through Alen's chest in one duel. All in all, all the best character development have come from when either Alen was outmatched or I was challenged/outmatched by another writer.

I love the concept of competitive PVP. I like the idea of trying to outwit another writer; be creative to achieve a goal. I think the great thing about RP that keeps me from just going off to write my own literature is the unpredictability of interaction with another writer. I don't enjoy predefined RP storylines so much. So competitive PVP is the route I prefer.

(By the way, I've lost all my PVP engagements thus far, with the exception of one private thread and one 'throwaway' that I don't understand.)

That being said, I am extremely reluctant in writing PVP. And the biggest reason for this? Handwavium of the Force, and a little bit of invincible armor on top of that. I'm sure many of us have experienced the no-hitter. E-Web? Beskar stops it all. Scattershot? Force-shield-bubble-something-or-other. Hydrogen bomb? (Obvious exaggeration is obvious.) Force-art-of-molecular-reconfiguration.

And sometimes, if you are allowed a hit on a very special Force user, they will somehow become more powerful because Force rage.

Maybe I'm just an old geezer of sorts. I have a preference for the original movie material, and I'm not a fan of what the EU brings to the table. (For example, lightsaber-proof armors, 'Force-dead' things, Force sonic booms, teleportation-on-demand, 'collapsing' black holes, etc.) I suppose that limits me a bit in comparison with other PVP writers, but I find all these extras unnecessary and not beneficial at all to friendly combat. I don't like having to look up a two-sentence Wookieepedia article of a superpower that appears exclusively in the Dark Jedi #78 comic book from the '90s. And I'm not impressed that someone was able to write text about their character making a tornado.

Yes, I actually do like the Force element. I try to give my Force users some interesting quirks and experiment with different focuses. But there is an art in simplicity and limits which I believe is imperative to make things more human.

Just my view of things. A penny for your thoughts, or keep the change. :)

I've always had one problem with pvp, and that stems from the reality that most of the time in war, most people die. Most of our lightsaber duels end with a with scrapes and bruises. Do some PCs die, sure, but few compared to the large scheme of things. Even in 'legends canon' most people just don't get to walk away with their lives, and even if they do they loose a limb or two. Thats why I bulk, because if you get incapacitated or incapacitate someone realistically it won't end well.

I found this interesting and revealed some interesting things about certain writers I didn't know about!

Typically, while it appears that I try VERY hard to win all the time, really it isn't my main prerogative when I'm in PVP. I like - no, I LOVE - being collaborative, even if it's intended to be competitive! I always find it interesting to watch characters get out of a sticky situation I lay on them, not because I'm sadistic and I want to make people's lives more difficult, it's because I want to see their creativity, and the uniqueness of their solutions. But here's the thing about Triam: even when she loses, she also wins anyway (given that she's alive of course). Nearly every single force power used against me has been countered by technology, to ensure I have some defense for future battles that may encounter it.

It's not so I can be invincible, it's so that some Jedi dude can't pull something out of his butt to ruin my day, it's so that I have options, and there is no particular single move that'll work on me to its ultimate intended effect.

So yeah.

I also what does that ratio question mean? I didn't give an answer cause I didn't understand the questions?

Where is the never option...

To be frank no one ever wants to lose a fight. Sith are netorious for this no matter what site you roleplay on. I avoid PvP at all costs unless I know the writer, and trust they are willing to communicate throughout the duel if the need arises.

I like dueling because it's fun. Because I like sword fights and super powers. My most fun fights were against overwhelming opposition. Malice Draclau way back in the day, when Cronos was an experienced padawan/rookie knight, and here, against Daxton Bane.

Yes, I'm going to try to win. If I feel my opponent is worthy, I'll take hits here and there, but they're gonna have to work for it.

I've only ever had one PvP fight on this board that I've enjoyed and that was with [member="Meric Nadun"] during the Battle of Kashyyyk invasion earlier this year. I'm also expecting a good thread with [member="Enigma"] when Mark eventually replies. [member="Ordo"] was a clean fight, but I didn't like the outcome.

My most recent PvP situation on Telti summarizes my experiences with PvPing here on Chaos. I and the other writers didn't click, I didn't like the way the replies were coming back and there was an underlying feel that everyone involved wasn't enjoying it.

It's strange that I haven't really been able to enjoy PvP on Chaos because I've spent the last ten years, of at least 90% of my roleplaying being PvP orientated. I guess the community that I spent most of my time in did it a lot differently to the amalmagation of communities that have joined together here on Chaos, which leads to a conflict in writing.

PVP isn't my favorite thing. But I don't dislike it.
The best way to describe my feelings for it? Let's talk about Drapeam Nyx's first PVP fight on the site: [member="Vrag"] curbstomped me into oblivion and I was yelling about how awesome it was the whole time. She kicked me ass. I meant my, but you know what, that's me frakking accent there, so might as well keep it. She kicked my ass. But it was fun and OI MAH GURD THE PLOT THAT CAME OUT OF IT. Nyx died. Did that make me sad? Yeah, for like, ten seconds. The rest of the time I've been going on and on about how wonderful it was.

I don't care if I lose the fight as long as it's fun. Especially if I meet a totally awesome writer while it happens.

I've found that most issues can be solved through the powers of earth, wind, water, fire, and heart. Communication, in other words.

I really enjoy good PVP but so far I can't get that in invasions, only in pre set duels in open or private RP. Why I put no answer for everything atm I havint had enough to gauge things well and the invasions tend to be placing me in spots where I can only lose 100% of the time.
