Being somewhat of a historian, the man already held great respect for the Empire, and so when his disabled asteroid mining vessel was discovered adrift by The Imperial Remnant, Thetan pledged his allegiance to the Emperor and his cause. The galaxy has been a chaotic place ever since the fall of the Old Empire. We can dream of futures where democracies can endure, but what the galaxy needs most now is order, and only the Empire stands ready with the willingness, capability, and legacy necessary to provide it. That said, Alema is still getting accustomed to this whole 'Force' thing, and it seems reasonable to start at the lowest rungs of the Empire's force users.
