Raziel's Starship Templates

Overview
This topic is designed to provide members of the forum with some off-the-shelf templates for common types of starships.

The template is pretty easy to follow on its own, and has lots of good description in it. However, if you want to, you can easily copy and paste any of the pre-approved templates below, add an image and a good description and - as long as you don't tinker too much with the design - your ship will sail through the factory!

In this topic, after presenting the templates I also provide some advice on how to go about customising these templates to make advanced, or elite ships.

Balance
Balancing the build of a starship is based on a number of factors such as:
 • Size of vessel
 • Armaments
 • Speed and manoeuvrability of vessel
 • Advanced/Redundant shields and other defences
 • Size of hangars
 • Production (is it one of a kind, or mass produced?)
 • Unique features
Don’t worry though, we’ll get you started here and Factory Judges will help you with the rest! The first thing you have to do is choose one of the vessel classifications from the template. Decide what kind of vessel you’re after. Is it a light and fast picket vessel designed to harass the enemy, or a Star Destroyer of the line, designed to take enemy fleets head on?
 • The first section below, deals with Starfighters.
 • Further down, we deal with Capital ships.
1) Starfighter Basics

Cookie-cutter ships
Below, we’ve laid out a series of standard starfighters that you can immediately pick up, polish off and submit.

We'll start off with four simple starfighters using the template: a fighter, an interceptor, a bomber and a gunship. Note that the template asks how many squadrons are in the hangar for each carrier, but for a starfighter it asks how many are in a squadron. In the examples below there are twelve of each, except for the gunship. The gunship is large, tough and heavily armed, so there are only 6 per squadron.

Advanced Starfighter Design
This section will help you make a more complex load out for a vessel, balancing out a range of weapons and ordnance. Never forget that the Strengths and Weaknesses section of the template are great places to round out your ship and give it genuine flavour. It's also one of the first places that anyone else looking at your ship will go. It's easiest to start with one of the cookie cutter templates above and modify from there.

Armaments
The chart below shows a range of different options and a rough value of each for comparison. For example you could trade a homing missile launcher for two heavy laser cannons. Of course, you can always submit a new and unique weapon! You can now start to trade the type and variety of weapons your ship has. You could have a missile-boat type of gunship, that uses nothing but concussion missiles, for example. If you want more armaments, your vessels needs to be balanced out, generally be either reducing speed or squadron count. If you want to be faster, you'll need to drop some weaponry, or make the vessel particularly fragile.

Gun Emplacement Gun Value
Laser Cannon 1
-Low rate of fire, high power. By far the most common weapon out there for starfighters.
Ion Cannon 1
-low rate of fire, low power. Similar to the laser cannon, but takes down shields more quickly, but less effective against the hull and will only disable a fighter, not destroy it
Mass Driver 1
-Similar in scale to a laser cannon, but firing a solid slug to do kinetic damage.
Light Cannon 0.5
Blaster Cannon 1
-high rate of fire, low power
Heavy Cannon 2
-low rate of fire, very high power
Repeating Laser Cannon 2
-high rate of fire, high power
Composite Beam 2
-As seen being fired from the LAAT in EP2
Warhead Launcher 2
-Concussion missile, proton torpedo, light energy torpedo launcher, etc.
Homing Warhead Launcher 4
-All warheads have some homing capabilites, but these are particularly tenacious in chasing fighters. For example: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Bril...it the use of these ships for balance.

Working on a quick ref chart for advanced users to replace the current one:

HnwPlsF.png

It'll come with a disclaimer saying it is a guide only, of ships that would be acceptable to a FJ if kept vanilla. Balancing a ship is a matter for a FJ and submitter. This is just to help people through the template, either very quickly taking a cookie cutter ship, or getting into advanced ships

Elite Developed Vessels

Often people will do significant development to create overpowered ships. This could be a little bit of development for a particularly agile ship, or a mountain of development for a technological marvel. There is also scope in the template to submit a Flagship. An individual ship of extreme size or power.

Here are a few examples of development:
Meet the restricted material requirements for a limited production cloaked ship using Stygium.
Create a short development thread for a minor boost to one system of a ship of mass production.
Do a significant (~100+ posts) development thread to create a highly advanced warship of limited production (should never more than double the firepower of a vessel)
Complete the Flagship requirements to make a single unique flagship (no guidance provided on this, every one should be unique and your judge will advice on balance!

Significantly overpowered vessels should never go above limited production. When you start a fleeting encounter, both sets of writers should decide how to limit the use of these ships for balance.

I'd like to add this caveat.

'threads intended for use of restricted materials in starship submissions will be held to a much higher standard'

There is a difference between using restricted material for a piece of armor compared to ships.

I am not comfortable seeing multiple ships even at an unnumbered limited amount without a good development thread for that restricted material.

Quality will determine quantity in that.

I'm Sexy and I Know It
Okay, I have a minute at work to give a brief statement in this idea. I read through it and then reread it. Mulled it over for a bit, slept on it, and then reread it.

Personally, my question is "why?" Its almost identical to the 2.0 guide except with a "cookie cutter" option which, to be honest, was easily achieved under the 2.0 guide. The charts and templates are nice and all, but they're the same charts from the 2.0 guide, just put more... Artistically. Its a good effort and a great concept, but from what I understood was we need to make this easier for people to make ships, not roundabout our way to an old way of doing things. Don't get me wrong, I'm still a softy for the old 2.0 guide, but it was my understanding that the 2.0 was tossed out in favor of simplicity and to encourage more people to build starships. If I'm wrong, that's fine, but that was how I understood it.

[member="Popo"]

I get your point, we do want this to be optional information!

However, to start off with, the old guide was near 5000 words.

This is 1700 words and already needs trimming back. I'm going to try and get it under 1000.

The idea is to give some quick cookie cutter templates that people can pick out and sub easily, and then some of the more pertinent information from the older guides to help people sub advanced systems.

Many of the people I help through the new template are struggling a bit with where to go in terms of speed and armament ratings etc. I think some of the items here are a handy reference to stop me repeating myself, and provide some help, without bringing back the waffle of 2.0

I think some of the information recycled from the older guides and such need to be formatted in a more user-friendly fashion, as the gun value chart/list(more of a list than a chart) is almost all over the place. Things should have a "finished" look, as though you went back and edited things to make every thing line up, placing 4 spaces between Laser Cannons and 1 and then the same between the next line isn't going to make the 1 and the next number line up, simple things like that make things look unwelcoming to inexperienced people.

I also think that while it's a nice idea to tell everyone "hey, this is the "average" or "most acceptable" for this class of ship", we should also explain why some classifications of larger ships have less than smaller ones, and not just because "balance" - because that isn't the real reason. They should be aware that sacrificing hangar space for guns isn't just balance, but for space that would be replaced by more power sources to compensate for a higher required output. Small things like that fill in the gaps between "this number, that feature, this number, no feature". While balance is what we want to happen in the factory, it is also important that people understand why that balance is achieved other than artificial demands on our part. It makes things easier if they know the SW reason behind things, not just for the judging practice but also for how people view the factory and how they deal with the decisions/requests made on our part outside of the factory in conversation.

I get that, but any lower than what is already there and you may as well start issuing coloring books.

Starships are always going to be complex. The main problem that the 2.0 guide had was complexity. The secondary problem was the judges. Yeah, I'm old school. Yeah, I cut my teeth on the 2.0 guide. But half the problem was what we were doing, which is a reason why we were replaced.

Yes, 2.0 was complicated, but it had set limits to what you could do. It had a baseline. We don't have that right now. Sure, this guide wip is listing averages, but there's no standard. Min-maxing will always be a thing. You can't avoid it. It's like death and taxes. The only thing you can do is keep it in check.

We have ships right now that are some of the most broken things I've seen. Ships with more guns than they could feasibly mount on the hull. Ships with half their mass put into excess bulkheads. Its getting a bit ridiculous.

Was the 2.0 guide perfect? No. Far from it, but it had what this new system lacks: a baseline.

It takes some of the complexity out of the equation. "How many guns can I put on a ship? The guide doesn't say, just gives a ballpark... Well, so and so faction subbed a ship with this many... So let's double it..." vs "How many guns can I put on a ship... Guide says this is the standard maximum... Okay, I can go from there and adjust accordingly."

Conversely, it helps the judges standardize their work. How many guns can I allow on a ship of this size? It's right there in solid black and white. When you start going on averages, people either get confused or see opportunity to wiggle around the wiggle room.

Other than the lack of a solid standard, the rest of it looks fine, if a bit... Watered down. Just be careful with dumbing things down too much or else we'll start having people submit the starship equivalent of picture books to the starship factory.

Yeah that works. I'll slightly reword and do the rest of my cookie cutters in a mail merge (90s technology go!)

The structure would go from cookie cutter templates to a bit of advice on taking then and going off-template

Gun Emplacement Gun Value
Laser Cannon 1
-low rate of fire, high power. By far the most common weapon out there for starfighters.
Ion Cannon 1
-low rate of fire, low power. Similar to the laser cannon, but takes down shields more quickly, but less effective against the hull and will only disable a fighter, not destroy it
Mass Driver 1
-similar in scale to a laser cannon, but firing a solid slug to do kinetic damage.
Light Cannon 0.5
Blaster Cannon 1
-high rate of fire, low power
Heavy Cannon 2
-low rate of fire, very high power
Repeating Laser Cannon 2
-high rate of fire, high power
Composite Beam 2
-as seen being fired from the LAAT in EP2
Warhead Launcher 2
-concussion missile, proton torpedo, light energy torpedo launcher, etc.
Homing Warhead Launcher 4
-all warheads have some homing capabilites, but these are particularly tenacious in chasing fighters. For example: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Brilliant_missile[/url

Start with one of the cookie cutter templates above and modify from there. Balance out the various aspects of the ship to make something new. The chart below shows a range of different weapon options and a rough value of each for comparison. For example you could trade a homing missile launcher for two heavy laser cannons. Of course, you can always submit a new and unique weapon!

Heavy Cannon 2
-low rate of fire, very high power
Repeating Laser Cannon 2
-high rate of fire, high power
Composite Beam 2
-as seen being fired from the LAAT in EP2
Warhead Launcher 2
-concussion missile, proton torpedo, light energy torpedo launcher, etc.
Homing Warhead Launcher 4
-all warheads have some homing capabilites, but these are particularly tenacious in chasing fighters. For example: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Bril...it the use of these ships for balance.
