Raziel's WIP starship template update

I will keep a master copy in word with tracked changes on and will be happy to share.

Change log
  • Removed links to old armament tables
  • Consolidated ship and station dev
  • Added dev for civilian stations over 3000m
  • Added requirement to link manufacturer if chaos canon company
  • Add defense line
  • Make armament ratings mandatory
  • Outline that strengths from special features must ALL be listed under strengths and balanced by weaknesses or dev
  • Add dev guidelines to all relevant categories
  • Fixed formatting errors in "Primary Source" field
  • All templates done
  • Add civilian space stations/shipyards. Examples: : Asteroid Base, Deep Space Manufacturing Facility, Skyhook, Medical Station, Orbital Docking Platform, Space Colony
  • Split Destroyers and Carriers into sub 2000 and >2000 classes
  • Add all example ships
  • Fix examples that are in the wrong class
  • Add recommendation to use example ships
  • Update Helpful links section with easy reference chart
What this means for you as a submitter:
  • You can now see the guidance on stats that will require additional development. Note that ships will be judged on overall balance and maxing everything to the limits is unlikely to be acceptable.
  • Armament ratings are now mandatory. Judges will be instructed to focus more on these than fiddle around with tedious gun maths.
  • Defensive ratings have now been included and are mandatory.
  • The templates each have some handy example ships. You can copy and paste these and then configure them to your requirements!!
  • A reference chart summarises the example ships to help you make and customise your vessels.
  • There are now separate charts for military and civilian ships, as well as some examples.
  • Make sure you list the relevant strengths of other features and submissions you're using in the strengths of the vessel too. This is now mandatory.
  • Make sure you link to the submission of the manufacturers as this is also now mandatory.

Hopefully this will all make submitting a starship a much easier and transparent process for everyone. Try and make sure you balance out your ships primary stats: speed, manoeuvrability, armament rating, defense rating, hangar size as well as any special features your ship has.

Please choose the template that is applicable to what you wish to create. For any submission that does not fitWe recommend you copy and paste one of the categories below, useexample ships listed under the Basic Templaterelevant template and work from that. Handy reference charts are included at the end of the template to help you customise you vessel.

if we are going to word this like this in the template why use the megalight speed chart at all? The template seems like it is laying out a speed ranging from 1 to 20 for each class. while the megalight chart lines it out for ship size. it could confuse people.

I'm assuming what your question is implying is that 10 would be what the 2-3 on the speed chart is for a starfighter (because 10 would be the median/"average"), so using the chart makes no sense - correct?

[member="Reshmar"]
After reviewing another discussion on the topic of ship speeds, I believe you've misunderstood the conversation that took place in skype. It's okay to have done so, because honestly skype gets confusing, but this is the summary of changes that occurred which Spencer posted into skype:
  • 3.0 Speed chart added into Starship template's "Helpful Links" section.
  • Archived previous page that contained the speed chart in order to remove unnecessary duplicate articles.
  • Expectation made that less confusion on speed ratings and the like would occur because of the change with the update to current standards.
I believe something was mentioned along the lines of
a starfighter would be faster than a frigate
Which is true, but I think this is where the misunderstanding begins.

A starfighter with the same speed as a frigate would be faster than that frigate. This is what has been the standard since Sept. 28th 2014 at the start of 3.0 (and probably earlier).

A starfighter would still normally have a speed of 3, and so on, but placing a starfighter with 5 speed up against a frigate with 5 speed is still going to result in the starfighter being the faster ship.

We aren't altering the way we do speed ratings, and the speed chart is still accurate. The only thing that was changed was the removal of the 1.0 speed chart that was previously posted in the template. So you can still expect to see starfighters subbed with 3 speed/man, frigates with 9/9, and so on.

[member="Bianca"] [member="Raziel"] more or less yes. The Template reads that each class has the ability to have speeds from 1 to 20. with 10 being average. So this would automaticlly make the lower class faster than the one above it. Corvettes faster that frigates, frigates faster than cruiser. And yes 10 would be basically 3 compared to Rhys guide. I am not saying this is how it is I am just saying this is how the template now reads now.

No, that is the misunderstanding. We still operate the exact same speed scale, with every ship together on a 1-20 speed chart as the chart explains. A starfighter will normally be 2-3 (average) and a frigate will generally be around 9. If a starfighter had happened to be put at 5, and a frigate at 5, the explanation in skype was that the starfighter would be faster, which is still correct.

What I am trying to explain is that 10 is not average, as we're not operating off of that. The template still reads the same way it did before.

This is not how people see it. The look at rhys chart as a guide for speed over every class. IF they put their corvette at speed 5 they think it is as fast as a speed 5 freighter. There is no differentiating this on rhys chart. It is very linear.

Say someone makes their cruiser speed 8 wanting a fast cruiser. They want a cruiser that is as fast as a frigate per Rhys chart. They do not see my speed 8 frigate is faster that your speed 8 cruiser.

The fact that there is a misconception there can be addressed by an announcement via factory discussion/information, we are not altering the way we view speed ratings here now, and have no plans to do so. It is only a minor issue that someone sees 5 = 5 for different ship classes, a simple solution to this would be to state that the smaller the ship category, the faster the ship inherently (and place the same example I've given).

I most likly am just looking at this wrong IDK but per the megalight speed chart it seems like speed 8 is speed 8 or speed 5 is speed 5 so on so forth regardless of what kind of ship it is.

Thats cool. I just do not want people being confused by how the Template reads and then how Rhys speed guide reads. If a speed 9 cruiser is not as fast as a speed 9 frigate thats cool but people need to know that somehow.

This seems complex.

Why are we making things more complicated? If they're the same speed, they're about the same speed and it's up to the writers to work it out.

The ship speed chart covers the full range of ships. 0-20 across the board.

Armaments are not, as specifically stated:

Armament: (You may provide your armament in list format and must provide your vessel an Armament Rating on a scale of 0-20, where 0 is no weapons, 1 is very light weapons, 5 is light weapons/light defense, 10 is medium weapons/medium defense, and 20 is heaviest weapons/heaviest defense. Armament Ratings are scaled in relation to the type of ship,

Maneuverability Rating: (The lower the number, the more agile the ship. How agile is your ship? Can it take tight turns? Please provide your vessel a Maneuverability Rating on a scale 0-20, with 0 being infinite agility, 1 being crazy agile like a TIE Interceptor, and 20 being slower to turn than a bantha.)

Please choose the template that is applicable to what you wish to create. We recommend you copy and paste one of the example ships listed under the relevant template and work from that. Handy reference charts are included at the end of this post.

Starship Rules

Ships over 400 meters must be owned by a Faction (Major or Minor) or Company, and may be captained by the character, but in case of leaving will not go with them without exceptional circumstances and faction administrator approval.

2. Ships and stations at or above 1,000 meters will always require a development thread. Minimum: 10 posts, 1 writer.

3. Ships and stations at or above 1,700 meters will always require a development thread. Minimum: 20 posts, 2 writers.

4. Ships and stations at or above 2,400 meters will always require a development thread. Minimum: 30 posts, 3 writers.

6. Civilian space stations over 3,000 metres will always require a development thread.
Minimum: 30 posts +10 posts for every additional 1,000 meters over 3,000m (Max 10,000m), 3 writers.

5. For ships over 3,000 meters, see the Flagship Rules

Minor Faction Rules

1. Minor factions are permitted unique, PC-captained ships up to a length of 1,000 meters

Major Faction Rules

1. Major Factions are permitted unique, PC-captained ships up to a length of 3,000 meters.

Company Rules

1. Mass producing any starship will require substantial proof of income by way of development thread, higher tier company, or Minor/Major Faction involvement.
2. To produce a ship over 1,000 meters in length, a company must be Tier 3 or higher.
3. Companies may own and operate a realistic amount of non-combat starships where maximum length per ship = ( Tier Number x 1000 ) / 2
4. Companies may own and operate a realistic amount of combat starships where maximum length per ship = ( Tier Number x 1000 ) / 3 and maximum fleet length = ((Tier Number x 1000) x (Tier Number)) / 2

Flagships

1. Only Major Factions may own Flagships.

2. Flagships are a prefix located in the Star Wars: Open Role-Playing forum.

3. The requirements of the Flagship thread are as follows:

a. The thread must be a minimum of 400 posts.

b. There must be at least 7 writers actively involved in the thread.

c. The thread is public and is open to any other Major Faction to join.

Bigger ships can accommodate more Armament and more Squadron Count, but will require a development thread once you pass 1,600 in length -even if generic. This submission's Max Squadron Count: 12, with 20 being the max for a 5,000 meter ship with a low armament. Feel free to provide a list of names for your squadrons, like the notorious Red Squadron. Alternatively, you may swap squadrons for Vehicles or other items of note.)

Special Features: (Provide all of your submission's special features, including non-combat items and special weapons, here in a list. Please link to all Factory Submissions used. Ensure capabilities from features are included in the Strengths list. Links: Starship Weapons, Approved Technology, Shields, Engines)

Maneuverability: ( The lower the number, the more maneuverable the ship. How agile is your ship? Can it take tight turns? Please provide your vessel a Maneuverability Rating on a scale 0-20, with 1 being crazy agile like a TIE Interceptor, 10 being average, and 20 being slower to turn than a bantha.)
Speed Rating: (The lower the number, the faster the ship. How fast is your ship in normal space? How fast can it take off, how fast can it speed through a planet's atmosphere? Please provide your vessel a Speed Rating on a scale 0-20, with 0 being infinite speed, 1 being crazy fast like the Millenium Falcon and 20 being slower than the Dewback.)
Hyperdrive Class: (The lower the number, the faster the ship. You may use decimals. (Minimum: .5 | Max: 10.) Average Hyperdrive Class: 2 ) Links: Hyperdrive, Hyperdrive Comparisons)

Strengths: (Provide, in list format, a minimum of 3 strength of this submission.)
Weaknesses: (Provide, in list format, a minimum of 3 weaknesses of this submission.)

Love this rhys.

Especially the station templates. we can definitely use this alongside the Codex so there is uniformity now with stations in the factory as tech subs and then locations if they want.
