Staff's Currently Voting On Hybrid Species Restrictions in Character Creation

[member="Ludolf Vaas"]
I agree on the part of species, but the issue isn't about species at all. It's about species and races, as Epicanthix, Vahla, etc, are all Near-Human species that are genetically and biologically compatible.

My thing is, people species blend to get unreasonable affects and advantages. But if we banned mixed breeding how does that stop people from genetically modding their characters to get the same said effects?

[member="Lisette Vantai"] It seems to me that even near-Human species are still distinct species. They're not categories of Humans (a.k.a. races).

Even with these near-Human species, I see no reason to mix them. In a perfect world I say just pick one.

Genetic modifications alter the genetic structure of the person and make them an entirely new species. This falls under the rule for custom and non-canon species for the board. It must go through the codex for approval.

How about 10% Dragon,15% Gundam, 20% Sith Lord, and 110% Tom Brady?

I don't know what this is but I love it

Lack of reasoning has nothing to do with it. The actual wookepedia articles for most of the Near-Human species states that they are capable of interbreeding with baseline humans and in many instances each other. In a perfect world I would say to research the race you wish to be rather than just slapping abilities and "strengths" known of certain species and ignoring their weaknesses.

This literally would never have come up if me and the other seven people trying to write Alphas hadn't made these characters. It makes me more than a little bit angry, but that's not your problem, any of you.

Anyway, even if I hadn't been writing Luster, I still would've said "no". Reason being, that there's a handy dandy 'report' button for this kind of thing. Sithspawn are biological Frankensteins. It'd be pointless to play them, if you couldn't throw species and odd animal traits into the mix.

On the other hand, though, I wouldn't enjoy having to fight Revan-esque Space-Jesus-es every time I come across one. But honestly, that's not what the Alphas are. They're literally each focused on one power or trait.

As I mentioned before, this is for the handful of people who just joined the site or just created a bunch of characters to fill in a niche idea that one of them had. The idea isn't bad, the characters aren't bad, but there are set-in-stone requirements already in place for custom species and sithspawn races that require non-canon races to be submitted to the codex prior to use in roleplay. This isn't about restricting people's Vahla, Epicanthix, and Zeltronian characters, it's about keeping people from creating intermix species to circumvent the codex.

I made this character as a sort of genetic experiment type, since Arkanians are known to try and mess around with genes.

I know you're going to laugh when you read the combination, even so: Arkanian/Anzati/Stennes Shifter

Now here is the strengths and weaknesses page. You get some of the strengths of the races, but you get all the weaknesses and more:

  • +Vision: He is only capable of seeing in the infrared spectrum, which is very useful on cold worlds.
  • +Telepathic Shroud: as with Stennes Shifters, DĂ»vain has an innate affinity for a telepathic ability that clouds the minds of others and allow him to go unnoticed in crowds. The ability will not work if he is not in a crowd, nor will it work on Hutts, droid sensors, Epicanthix, and Force Users (specifically Force Users who are either aware of the telepathic effect, or more powerful in telepathy than DĂ»vain)
  • +Force Eater: Capable of absorbing expended Force Energy, as with a Stennes Shifter
  • +Rapid Healing: His Anzati nature is dominant and includes a heightened healing process.
  • -Vision: As he is only capable of seeing in infrared, he is easily susceptible to harsh lights that can range from blinding him for a few minutes to blinding him for days. If he were to step out into the Tatooine sands during a particularly hot day, for instance, and stare up into the sun he would be blinded for the rest of that day. If a flashbang grenade went off in front of him he would be blind for several days.
  • -Starvation: requires a steady diet of humanoid brains in order to survive, 12 every month to be healthy.
  • -Sterile: An amalgamation of various entities spliced into a single being and grown in a tube, DĂ»vain is unable to reproduce.
  • -Disease: He is highly susceptible to any diseases plaguing the Anzati, Stennes, and Arkanian species. As he was grown in a tube his immune system has been unable to develop resistances to many types of bacteria and viruses. The common cold could indeed be dangerous to him. In addition, if/when he ever does catch a disease he will have to be treated by specialists. No simple hospital will suffice as the wrong medication and treatment could easily kill him.
  • -Bacta Allergy: He is severely allergic to bacta, which itself is a bacteria that helps the healing process. Unfortunately, in his case it will cause swelling in the throat that can suffocate and kill him.
  • -Aggressiveness: The scientists who created DĂ»vain intended for him to be the genetic blueprint an Arkanian warrior subspecies. As such, they focused on activating genes that increased aggressiveness. However, they also completely shut off the genes that enable compassion. Thus, DĂ»vain is hyper-aggressive and tends to react violently to 'fix' situations.

If you think that's fair, like I do, vote 3. I also welcome any suggestions for more weaknesses, because i think overcoming weaknesses is what makes characters great. The more the merrier.

Although the alphas aren't the only ones guilty of this and I would not quote or tag you if you hadn't posted first... I kind of take issue with ANYONE who starts off their character being super great at anything. Hence my earlier watching too much Avatar comment.

Just rolled your character? Have done no training? At most you might manage some power manifestation when totally freaking out and scared. This whole magic fire/ice/earth whatever with no training is.. a steaming load of bantha poodoo.

BUT!

We do have that handy ol' report button!

And again, my comments are not aimed directly at the Alphas, though they fall under this, so do a bunch of other folks. I mostly just want meaner RPJ's ;)

2, but they should be reasonable.

Human hybrids are reasonable. Near-Human + Human hybrids are reasonable. Basically in canon, I have seen anything + a Human race. I have yet to see, for example, a feline species mates with a avian species to form a hybrid feline/avian species.

I feel like hybrids should be for the sake of RP and appearance, rather than actual benefits. Hybrids for the sake of getting benefits of both races or negating a weakness just makes it obvious that the character/writer is just trying to make their characters OP. ((EDIT: Human races being kinda a "norm," with no discernible difference/advantages other than a cultural/societal one. For example, a Corellian being a better pilot because that's their background rather than physical/genetic advantage.))

On that note, more ways of making people less OP/godmoddy?

All created species go through a submission process, even my hammer wielding super soldier did.

But, the Alphas are doing their dev thread now, so they're doing fine.

This thread isn't so much about them as other hybrids.
