As he peered up at Corbin, who was looking down at him, Gatz said, "that I am! Why don't we get you guys out of here?"
To say that Gatz was relieved would be an understatement. They weren't pirates, they were actually just people in need. He wasn't sure whether he should thank his luck, his gut instinct, or the Force. Perhaps all three were deserving of such gratitude.
The first woman to board the ship, he knew it was Rika from her voice, seemed to take offence with the state of his ship. Well, he couldn't exactly blame her. With only R4-A1 to help with repairs (he didn't even know if Ay knew how to use a hydrospanner), Gatz didn't exactly have the time to fix things properly. Kriff, he didn't even have the know-how to fix things properly, and he certainly wasn't going to let any odd engineer poke around his ship.
"Unfortunately, in my line of work, I don't have much time to fix things properly. And this bucket of bolts," Gatz patted the green R4 unit on its dome, it having just rolled in behind him, "does more harm than good."
R4 let out an indignant beep at that, but Gatz chose to ignore it, "but, she flies just fine."
Gatz didn't pay much mind to the second woman to march onto his ship, other than noting that her skin had an orange tint to it, which he thought was kinda cool.
The man that followed her, however, made Gatz feel uneasy. This man, he almost certainly knew, was the one who probed his mind through the Force. Gatz prepared himself for another assault, only to be pleasantly surprised when the man instead gave him a literal pat on the back. He seemed nice enough, and was quite polite. As the man made his way to speak to Ay, Gatz decided to forgive him for prying into his thoughts.
Of all the new people to walk onto his ship, it was the woman in coveralls that peaked his interest the most. She had snuck in behind Cassus (Gatz was pretty sure that was his name, right?), and had immediately made a beeline for all the obvious patch jobs. The way her eyes scanned the exposed wires and patched lines, implied that she had a certain expertise. It was almost like she was figuring out how to properly fix all the things he had jerry rigged, and if R4 hadn't bumped into his leg, he would never have heard her question, and would have instead stayed transfixed on her keen eye.
"Well, the last time I let an engineer on board, he tried to report me to the authorities for all the illegal cargo I was hauling. So, uh, five years ago?"
The last bit of the sentence came out sheepishly, almost as if he were expecting a verbal lashing for his very obvious lack of care. But hey, the ship ran just fine, so what did it matter if it wasn't pretty on the inside?
