Balun's mind wandered as Danger Arceneau Danger Arceneau spoke about the origins of Arceneau Trade, a small family business on Tatooine that her grandfather had once nurtured. He couldn't help but imagine what those early days looked like—the grit and determination required to start from such humble beginnings. It gave him a sense of hope for Dashiell Retrofit. Though his company had the significant advantage of his father's financial support, his inheritance, and an established network of contacts, the thought that something as grand as Arceneau Trade had once started small fueled his ambitions.

At present, Dashiell Retrofit boasted a single but impressive orbital shipyard, a foundation for the larger vision Balun had for the company. In the quieter moments, he worked on smaller, more personal projects aboard The Nomad, his ship. But to see where Danger had brought her family's business—transforming it into a corporate giant—was a testament to her dedication and entrepreneurial brilliance. It inspired him, making the future seem brighter and more achievable.

"I'm sorry about your father and grandfather," Balun said after a moment, his tone filled with genuine sympathy. Whether their loss had been recent or years past, the weight of such grief was something he didn't take lightly. While Balun had seen comrades fall in battle and mourned brothers-in-arms during his time with the Aquilian Rangers and the Tingel Arm Coalition, he couldn't fully imagine the pain of losing an immediate family member. The closest he could compare was the thought of losing Nouqai, a friend he cherished deeply, or his father and brother, who he'd come to love dearly. "From what I've heard, I'm sure they'd be proud of the legacy you've carried on. Your family name is known across the galaxy now. You're kind of famous," he added with a soft smile, hoping to ease any sorrow his words might have stirred. "If I had kids someday, I'd hope they'd honor me the way you've honored them—showing the galaxy what it means to be an Arceneau."

His compliment came with a touch of admiration, subtly guiding the conversation away from the pain of loss while leaving space for her pride in her achievements.

The conversation shifted as the subject of his father came up. Balun's smirk widened, the thought of Judah Dashiell Judah Dashiell as a young man igniting his curiosity. "What was Dad like back then?" he asked, leaning in slightly, his eagerness clear. "I can't really picture him at my age. Was he anything like me? How old were you both when you met?" There was an almost boyish enthusiasm in his expression, his desire to uncover stories from a past he hadn't been part of written plainly on his face.

"I won't keep Dad away from you for long...so, don't worry if you have plans."

"I could always come and help too if you need a few days of extra hands to help get things ready."

Azula paused and watched the young girl run off. She didn't know much about parenting, but Makai was going to be exercising plenty of patience to keep a young toddler entertained in a few years.

"But otherwise I'm sure I can find something else to do. Spa day alone. Just don't let him make his back worse."

She made the offer, but then it had struck her that it was a very personal thing for Makai and Myra to finish preparations. She would understand if they would rather just have Judah visit for a few days. Hopefully he didn't put his back out.

Azula couldn't help but hear little pieces of Danger and Bale's conversation. Two things struck her. Firstly, that her referred to Judah as 'Dad'. Perhaps Judah had been tentative in describing their relationship, but clearly it was going well between them. She was glad. Secondly, the boy had left the Jedi order but needed training. That was something she needed to think about.

"I made it out alright, but I won't let something like that blindside me again," she said firmly. Makai had seen what she could do when pushed. "They'll have to do better than try and hit me with a truck next time."

Myra returned the smile and squeeze Judah gave her with a small chuckle. At least she got him to laugh a bit; she enjoyed seeing the way his face would relax and the crinkles on the corners of his eyes would appear as he laughed. Indeed, he was still a very handsome man.

"Well, we'll see what happens. Can't plan for everything but we can see what interests she'll be into -- although with our luck, it just might be rocks or fishing," She joked, grabbing her water to drink some more.

Yet the comment regarding her mama and wanting to be more excited regarding the baby made Myra contemplate quietly a bit.

"I think she is in her own way... she has been hovering around me to make sure I get the medical care I need. But considering what little she's told me regarding what happened in the past, I can understand why she's worried and seems to be a bit more measured. "

He was right, they all had a rough year.

"Yeah, we all had a rough year. Mama, Rue...then being unable to go visit daddy's resting place on Empress Teta has been a strain."

Danger's smile warmed at Balun's kind words, the sincerity behind them striking a chord in her that she didn't often let others see. "Well, thank you kindly," she drawled, her voice gentle, but grateful.

Her gaze softened further as Balun's words lingered, that touch of admiration in his tone catching her off guard in the best way. It wasn't every day someone acknowledged the weight of carrying on a legacy. "From the looks of it, you are already starting on that path. Just keep at it."

Then came the question about Judah, and Danger's expression shifted, ever so slightly. The smile didn't falter, but there was a flicker of something deeper in her eyes, nostalgia wrapped in a bittersweet ribbon. She took a slow breath, setting her glass down on the table as her gaze turned inward for a moment.

"Judah…" she began, her voice softening to a thoughtful murmur, "he was somethin' else, that's for sure. The kind of rare man who stood by his word. Had this farm boy charm about him...real earnest, with backworld morals that just don't seem to come 'round often anymore. He stood out in a sea of suits and slick-tongued entrepreneurs, like a patch of green on a desert planet."

Her lips curved again, this time with a hint of humor. "Ambitious? Oh, absolutely. And hard-working to a fault. Faithful, loyal, especially to those he cared about. That man was the definition of steady. But," she added with a light chuckle, "he needed a little help now and then, mostly when it came to marketin'. His talents weren't in sellin' the dream; they were in buildin' it. The rest? That was all his dedication to his company and to his family."

Her eyes flicked back to Balun, and the melancholy in her expression melted away, replaced by something softer and more present, then growing in amusement, "Well now, you should know better than to ask a lady her age," She joked, "But we met when Makai was no older than three or so and married to Miz Kai."

Danger's smile grew as she leaned in just a fraction, her emerald eyes catching the light. "And as for how much of him I see in you? Well, for certain, you got the Dashiell looks. And from the looks of it, that same ambition and drive to carve a place out of your own from your own merits."

"If Makai has his way she'll be an expert geologist by the time she's five."

Judah shook his head slightly on that one. He wasn't sure how his son had such passion for, of all things, rocks. Time spent beach combing and wandering through caverns in his youth. There would be no doubt his granddaughter would have some type of drive and passion considering both Makai and Myra's personalities.

Regarding Danger, he could only nod. Judah knew the Trade Queen's past in terms of children she had tried to bring in the universe, only to never utter their first cry. He couldn't imagine and didn't hold it against her that the redhead would be much more cautious with Myra Arceneau Dashiell Myra Arceneau Dashiell than he was.

"Rue seems to be doing well. Still, I know it was rough news for you to take at first. She's a good kid." Certainly had taking a shine to Makai quickly. Still being sheltered and kept back from most events, the girl's personality was slowly shining through. "I'm sure in time you will able to visit the memorial site. Governments don't last forever. Small solace."

Coming up on the anniversary of the "death", Judah still had his own sharp thoughts about a man leaving his family behind. A wife and daughter at the time. Now another 'daughter' of sorts and a granddaughter on the way.

"Maybe some time at the Farm would be just as good as visiting his resting place. Does your Ma still have those blasted nerfs he got?"

Makai listened and offered a small nod. He didn't know how to reply to Azula's offer to help. It was a great gesture, and in his mind he had intended his father helping as a way to spend some one-on-one time. A little bonding. The past year hadn't been the best for their relationship.

"If you don't mind, I wanted to get some father-son time in. Dad has a house here on the compound so I'm sure you might come along but for the actual project, I'd prefer to just hang with Dad." Brow furrowed at the mention of his father's back. "His back? I thought his shoulder was the issue....well....I guess that was fixed so it might back sense the old man has back pain now."

At least, if it was any small comfort, Makai could see Azula cared about his father in some way. How much remained to be seen by him but considering it was the second meeting - well third - between them he wasn't going deep dive. Twisting around to look at Bale and Danger, he spoke to his brother.

"Hey, I need you to help me move some boxes upstairs tonight or tomorrow morning. Put those muscles to good use. Thanks baby bro."

Makai didn't give him a chance to protest, already liking this in charge, older brother dynamic.

"Next time? You anticipate getting hit by a truck again? With Dad? So you plan on travelling with him more often now?"

Myra laughed softly at the thought of Makai enthusiastically teaching their daughter the intricate differences between igneous and sedimentary rocks. "If that's the case, I better at least brush up on learning some of the names of the rocks they point out." She shook her head, the corners of her mouth quirking into a fond smile.

Her expression sobered as Judah mentioned Rue, the weight of the conversation shifting slightly.

"Yeah, it was a lot to take in at first," Myra admitted, swirling her water absentmindedly. "But she's incredible. Resilient, you know? I think having Makai around helps, he's like this big, goofy anchor for her, especially when they both get into those sport statistics and fantasy games."

She paused, her gaze softening. "The memorial site... I don't know. Maybe one day. But you're right, governments don't last forever. It's not much, but it's something." Myra's voice dipped, quieter, as if the thought of it was still tender.

Judah's mention of the Farm and the nerfs tugged a small, wistful laugh out of her.

"Oh, she still has them. Makai found someone with a bit more experience to take care of them after we left. " Myra tilted her head, the teasing lilt in her voice softening.

"Maybe you're right. Some time there might be what we all need. Well, perhaps after this one is born. I rather not end up nauseated again if the sea air is helping me keep my food down."

Balun listened intently, a warm smile spreading across his face as Danger Arceneau Danger Arceneau recounted stories of his father, Judah Dashiell, in his younger days. Hearing about Judah's steadfast morals and reputation as a good and honest man filled Balun with pride. He had always believed his father was a man of integrity—a hope born not from firsthand experience but from the desire to see the best in the man he had come to know as his father. Hearing Danger confirm this belief made his respect for Judah feel even more justified. It wasn't that he needed proof, but hearing admiration for his father from someone outside the family was a welcome affirmation.

What struck Balun most was the idea that even Judah had areas where he needed help in his early corporate endeavors. Despite the pedestal Balun had mentally placed him on, it was reassuring to know that his father, too, had once needed guidance. This revelation lightened some of Balun's self-imposed pressure. Running Dashiell Retrofit often left him feeling like he was fumbling in the dark, leaning heavily on the advice of Judah and Makai whenever he could. It was a quiet reliance, one he preferred to keep out of the public eye. Hearing that Judah had also sought help in his time gave Balun a comforting sense of solidarity with his father.

"Miz Kai?" Balun echoed the name thoughtfully when Danger mentioned the time she and Judah had first met. He knew from their conversations that his father had been married before, but he had never pried into those past relationships. Their bond was still new, and Balun had instinctively avoided bringing up potentially awkward details about Judah's life before his birth. "If Makai was only three, then that must've been before I was born," he said, his voice trailing off as he glanced toward his brother. A thoughtful look crossed his face as he briefly considered what life might have been like for Judah back then.

Across the way, Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell caught Balun's eye, gesturing for help with something later in the evening. Balun gave him a quick thumbs-up in response, a simple yet sincere gesture of his willingness to contribute. He was grateful for any opportunity to be part of the family, big or small, especially on days like this when the sense of belonging felt particularly strong.

Turning his attention back to Danger, Balun's expression shifted into a lopsided smirk as she remarked on how much he reminded her of Judah. She noted similarities in the way he acted, spoke, and thought, drawing a parallel between father and son that Balun hadn't fully dared to claim for himself. Her words carried a weight that struck him deeply, validating his quiet longing to be seen as part of the family in every sense. Though Judah and Makai had embraced him wholeheartedly, Balun sometimes couldn't shake the feeling of being the outsider—the black bantha, so to speak. But in this moment, her words chipped away at that lingering doubt, and for that, he was genuinely grateful.

“That’s right,” Danger replied with her throaty drawl, thinking back in fond memory before sparing a smile over at Makai’s direction.

I’d add more to the story but night end up embarrassing’ Makai and since he’s Marin’ dinner, might not be the best idea to tease the cook,” the redhead teased. Takes of his speckled blue butt might not be well received.

Turning back to Balun, Danger gave a nod of her head, “Aye. It is my understandin’ Makai’s mama is around here.”

Which considering how Danger still thought Judah was pining over the woman, she figured having Thessa and the Miz Tindara around was going to be one heck of a show.

“Alright. Ima get some drinks. Y’all looking for anythin’ in particular or more bite?”

After all, whiskey just might be in the cards for her after all.

"Rue and Makai - the two unlikely sports watchers I have seen in my entire life. Yet he's a good entry point for her to kind of cling to and explore a little more, a safe base. Its good to see both of them bouncing off one another."

Myra seemed to take Rue in stride despite the overwhelming aspect. From what he could tell, the girl was transitioning nicely into life. There had been so many, and still so many, concerns about syndromes clones could get if not eased into society properly. Downtime with the family seemed to be a good building block - just like the time in Centrality that Makai and Danger told him about, he didn't come til the end after all.

"Of course,I didn't think a trip to the Farm would be prudent now."

He nodded about the sea air, not looking surprised.

"Must be the Galan genes. Thessa had a rough time before Makai was born, as in as she was in labor it was touch and go. Things didn't improve until we got a pool of warm water and she labored and birthed there. You're quite different, not a Galan, but this little one is making it known she has some type of aquatic gene it seems."

Unsettled was the word for it. For the past two days she couldn’t shake off the feeling of dread and guilt… ever since she… when the promise had been broken. Yet something like this was inevitable for an inquisitor in training. She felt terrible nevertheless, like taking a life that wasn’t in defense had also chipped a part of her. That spark within her fading each day that she progressed into her apprenticeship.
———————————————

<<I’ve just entered the atmosphere.>> She sent Balun a text as her ship made her descent onto the planet.

It was a long trip from Sithspace to Joiol and she was late for sure. But she was looking forward to reuniting with Balun Dashiell Balun Dashiell again, after all the stress and pressure in training, she desperately needed that comfort. It had been a little more than a week apart, but it felt too long away from him. The siren had been sending her quite a lot of holopics of herself to keep it interesting, some more sleazy than others.

A chance to meet his family was daunting, Falentra didn’t know what they’d think of her, a sith. What if they didn’t like her? She had park on a field not too far away from the estate and began walking towards the destination, the nervousness lurking in the pit of her stomach.

Balun blinked, his surprise flickering across his face as he turned to glance back over his shoulder toward Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell . "Oh, you meant he was married to this Miz Kai person?" he asked, his voice carrying a note of confusion. Tilting his head slightly, he shifted his gaze to Danger Arceneau Danger Arceneau , feeling as though he'd somehow missed a crucial piece of the story. Miz Kai… The name was unfamiliar, an odd thread in a tapestry he thought he understood. Perhaps it had been a fleeting friendship from years ago, one that had simply fallen away with time. His brows lifted in quiet contemplation, but before he could press further, Danger was already steering the conversation—and herself—forward with practiced ease.

She said something about drinks, though Balun only half caught the beginning. Still, he pieced together enough to understand her intent as she started to drift away, leaving him behind. Balun let it slide, turning his attention to Makai and Azula Tindara Azula Tindara , who stood nearby engrossed in their own discussion. Hands stuffed casually into his pockets, he lingered at the edge of their conversation, his gaze darting to the side as he tried to find a polite way to join without interrupting.

Before he could make his move, the muted vibration of his datapad at his hip drew his attention. He pulled the device free, tilting the screen upward to read the incoming message. A peculiar smile tugged at his lips, subtle but warm, as his eyes flicked over the sender's name: Lady Falentra Lady Falentra . The message was brief, yet meaningful, and as if on cue, a low boom echoed across the estate grounds—a ship breaching the atmosphere, descending toward the Dashiell Estate.

"Excuse me for a second, guys. Sorry," Balun said quickly, his voice carrying an undercurrent of anticipation as he turned away. His stride gained purpose as he headed toward the estate, taking the most direct path through the building to intercept the ship. A barely contained energy lit up his steps, excitement simmering just below the surface. He kept his expression neutral, not wanting to betray his eagerness to anyone watching.

Once outside, Balun broke into a jog across the grassy expanse, his gaze fixed on the descending vessel. Its repulsorlift thrusters flared as it slowed, gracefully settling onto the estate grounds. His heartbeat quickened in time with his pace. Nouqai was here, and the thought of having her in his arms again spurred him onward, the rest of the world momentarily forgotten.

As soon as the figure of Balun came into view, Falentra propelled herself towards him in a burst of force speed, closing the distance between them in a blink of an eye. Wordlessly, she threw her arms around his neck, her lips then capturing his in a fervent kiss.

It was as if all her problems and worries melted away being in his arms again. There was nothing in the world more important than this moment, two pieces finally whole. “Did you miss me, Balun Dashiell Balun Dashiell ?” She asked after breaking the kiss, a giddy smile breaking across her visage.

"If you don't mind, I wanted to get some father-son time in. Dad has a house here on the compound so I'm sure you might come along but for the actual project, I'd prefer to just hang with Dad."

"Of course I don't mind," Azula replied. She smiled fondly towards the house before looking back at Makai.

Judah was going to be a grandfather and it was important he got to spend time both with the new arrival and seeing his son become a father.

"Well now, you should know better than to ask a lady her age," She joked, "But we met when Makai was no older than three or so and married to Miz Kai."

Azula was trying to tune out the other conversation. She was accustomed to soaking up an entire room. She had survived in some dangerous places by being aware of her surroundings.

She couldn't help but smile briefly when she heard Danger's gentle rebuttal.

"Next time? You anticipate getting hit by a truck again? With Dad? So you plan on travelling with him more often now?"

"I would rather not get hit by a truck again, no. It depends on our schedules, but we'll see. They were just common criminals and it's embarrassing that they got the drop on us."

The message was brief, yet meaningful, and as if on cue, a low boom echoed across the estate grounds—a ship breaching the atmosphere, descending toward the Dashiell Estate.

Azula glanced upwards and slowly back down as Balun excused himself. It has to be his guest.

"I think," Azula said to Danger and Makai, "that I'll head indoors and get myself a drink too."

"Well, we'll find out once she is born," Myra replied, setting her glass down to rub her swollen belly gently. After a moment she gave a small exhale, panning her grey eyes outside towards the massive windows overlooking the area where the rest of their family was at.

Off in the distance, there seemed to be the streak of an approaching vessel. Her brows rose.

"Well, that must be Balun's best friend I take it?" The heiress had yet to learn of any differences between Balun and his childhood friend from the last time they talked. She knew that Makai had planted the seed that if he had feelings for her, to let her know, but who knew if anything came out of it.

Another look and she caught the shuffling of Balun leaving and others making their way over, "I know Thessa is out gathering scallops, so she should be here soon as well."

Turning back to Judah, she smiled, "Looks like some folk are coming inside now."

"That's right," Danger replied smoothly, giving Balun a polite nod. Her expression stayed cordial, the faintest hint of a smile playing on her lips, though her thoughts on the matter were locked up tighter than a Hutt's treasure vault.

"I believe Myra mentioned she was out collectin' scallops or somethin' similar to add to the meal," she explained, her tone warm and inviting, offering just enough detail to keep the conversation flowing with her trademark hospitality. "So you'll likely make her acquaintance soon enough."

Before long, the subtle shift in Balun's posture caught her attention. Seemed another guest had arrived by the sound of an approaching starship's engines, someone important to him, if the glint in his eye was any clue. Danger's soft smile widened just a touch as she made a small gesture to set him at ease.

"No trouble at all, Balun," she drawled, her tone lilting like a songbird's trill. "I know all too well the responsibilities that come with actin' the host." She chuckled low, and gave a graceful nod of dismissal, watching him walk away.

As he disappeared down the path towards the landing pads, her attention shifted naturally to Azula and Makai. When the Togruta Jedi mentioned fetching her own drink, Danger turned her focus to Makai instead.

"So," she asked in a follow up, "is there anything in particular you'd prefer? "

"Oh, yeah, I get it. I'm sure you're busy too. Aligning schedules is always hard."

The mystery deepened for himself, storing away little facts in his head. A small nod as Azula mentioned going inside for a drink. Perhaps she was also going to check in on his father. No doubt he was wrapped up talking to Ellie.

A massive table has been set up in the sand, set to the nines despite the casual get together. Food of various kinds had been prepared ; nerf steaks from cousin Caspian, various shellfish and mollusks collected from the very ocean in front of them, grilled nuna. Knowing the different tastes of his mother and possibly Falentra, various raw fish dishes had been carefully prepared and he was even grilling baby octopus on the grill as a just-in-case. Wine and various non-alcoholic drinks chilled in buckets of ice, a medley of side dishes all tucked in between the chaos.

Gaze settled on the buckets of drinks. He figured the guests weren't into wine and were headed inside to grab some hard liquor. Their home had a well stocked bar with various spirits from across the galaxy. Of course, he had always kept the favorites on hand to ensure his father and Danger could always have Whreyns on the rocks.

"No thanks. I'm not drinking in solidarity with Ellie so I'll just grab something from the ice bucket."

With Bale off to find his lady love, Azula and Danger headed inside, his Mom out looking for scallops...looked like it was him,the grill, and watching the two girls on the beach.

"Hmm...I suppose that is Bale's friend. Couldn't see who else it would be. Too small to be one of the agricultural transports I've seen."

A small nod about his ex-wife. Thessa had never been one for crowds after her accident. It wasn't a surprise that she would drift off to quieter parts of the compound to collect scallops or enjoy some time alone. It wasn't a bad idea, spending time with this many family dynamics could be difficult to manage. Exhausting.

"Looks like."
He paused. "Looks like my hiding is over. Thanks for catching up with me. It was nice. Refreshing."

"Refreshing's a good word for it," she said, turning her attention back to him. "It's been too long since we've just... talked. I missed this."

She rested her hand lightly on the edge of the table, fingers brushing the smooth wood as she set her glass down. Her eyes flicked back to Judah, catching the weariness still etched faintly into his expression. Yet, there was also a calm there she hadn't seen in a while, and it made her chest feel lighter.

"You know," she added, a hint of teasing in her tone, "you don't have to hide so much, but if you feel the need to wander a bit, there are plenty of paths down by the cove and seacliffs if you need some time. Plus Makai designed this place to be large enough for whatever kind of 'refreshing' you need."

Her gaze softened, and she gave him a small, knowing nod. "But I get it. Family can be... a lot. Still, you're always welcome, Judah. You don't have to wait for an excuse."

She had seen him do the same back on the Farm when trying to hide from her mama's fretting. She expected having some quite time for himself would be warranted from time to time.

Lady Falentra Lady Falentra practically flew into Balun's arms, a blur of motion as she left her ship in a Force-accelerated sprint. Her feet barely touched the ground before she leapt toward him, and he caught her effortlessly, his arms wrapping tightly around her as her momentum spun them in a full turn. Balun pivoted on his heels to steady himself, his body instinctively adjusting to the impact, but all he felt was her—familiar, cool, and unmistakably home.

Before either could speak, Nouqai tilted her head up and pressed her lips to his. The kiss was fervent and unspoken, a wordless greeting that Balun returned without hesitation. It was as if time momentarily folded in on itself, the world narrowing to just the two of them—her hands clutching at him, his hold unwavering and secure.

When Nouqai finally broke the kiss, her words teased at the silence, and Balun smirked in response. "How could I not?" he murmured, his voice low and tinged with affection. There was no need to overthink; anything less than honesty would have been absurd. The truth was simple, and it radiated from him as he pressed his forehead gently to hers.

For a moment, Balun allowed himself to pause, closing his eyes as he savored her presence—the steady rhythm of her breathing, the warmth of her skin against his. It was grounding, a fleeting instance where nothing else mattered but this. Yet reality crept back in, tugging at the edges of his mind, a reminder of the others waiting inside.

"To be honest, I wondered if you might've had second thoughts with the whole family being here," Balun admitted, his voice soft yet tinged with playful honesty. "But I'm really excited to introduce you to everyone. Some of them I'm meeting for the first time myself, honestly." He chuckled lightly, the grin tugging at his lips as he added, "They're all awesome, though. We better not keep them waiting."

Reaching for Nouqai's hand, Balun laced his fingers through hers with an easy familiarity. With a grin that was equal parts excitement and mischief, he dipped his head suggestively toward the estate. "Shall we?" he teased, his tone lighthearted, but his steps deliberate as they began walking toward the building—together.
