"Hold onto your human bits, sweetheart!" before [member="Scherezade deWinter"] could even glare at him, Kinglsey slammed down on a big red button on the center console, kicking his XP-38 into overdrive.
They were both thrown back into their seats by sheer force of acceleration, breaking off from the others as the Hiitian and his reluctant passenger boosted ahead. Too drunk to keep heading in a straight line, it took several moments for the bird to remember that only [member="Cim Salro"] had the exact coordinates to their final destination. Before he knew it, the others were already distant specks in his rear view. He tossed a sidelong glance at Scherezade, gulping slightly the moment he saw her unamused facial expression. At least, he was pretty sure that was anger. With humans it was difficult for him to tell, it was either anger or constipation. In either case, he should probably get them back on track as quickly as he could.
"I can fix this! I can fix this!" he squawked frantically, slamming down on the handbrake and drifting the landspeeder in one massive semicircle.
By the time Kingsley had completed their circuit, both his feathers and Scherezade's hair were hopelessly askew for the smuggler had not bothered to activate the speeder's transparisteel top. They were now also behind the other speeders again, this time his speeder was the distant speck in their review. Slamming on his acceleration peddle, they both experienced minor whiplash as he struggled to coax the XP-38 back to furious life so that he would not lose track of the others.
They didn't pull onto the same city street as the Ministry of Science building until a short time after the others, and even in the distance they could hear Salro's sudden piercing cry and glimpse her slump down to her knees in an emotional display of grief.
"That doesn't sound good," he shook his head, keen eyes catching sight of distantly approaching building security even through the blur of his intoxication, "That's even worse! This was supposed to be a smash and grab, right? In and out before they even notice!"
He glanced over at Scherezade, then scanned their surroundings. He groaned.
"Looks like we're improvising," he squawked at his passenger, "I have a brilliant plan. Hold on!"
Not waiting to hear her objections, Kingsley pulled them around into a violent u-turn and then circled the block until he had turned back onto a city street that led directly to the front of the Ministry of Science. Throttling down on his foot pedal, the Hiitian's talons revved the speeder's engines a few times, and then he released his brakes and they were off like a rocket, headed straight towards the main threshold of the Ministry at the XP-38's top speed.
At the last moment, Kingsley drifted to their right and rerouted full power to their repulsorlifts, springing off the street and up the arced back of a labor vehicle. For a brief, terrifying moment they were both hurtling through the air before violently crashing through Ministry windows on the second floor of the building.
"Rrrrawwwk! Nobody move!" the drunken freighter captain stumbled out of his smoking speeder and chambered a round into his scattergun, "This is a distraction!"
