Using Pirates: Privateers and Letters of Marque

How would we feel about reaching out to pirate factions and offering them letters of marque to raid Sith and certain other factions? I think anything we can do to harry the enemy is in our best interests, and think there may be pirates who wouldn't mind acting as privateers.

Just want to caution that the use of Pirates and Smugglers may have worked for the Rebellion but you might think twice about a full fledged government supporting pirates.

Privateers are just pirates for hire. Risky business if they start doing nasty things and claiming the Republic said it was ok.

[member="Janira Fenni"], the letters of marque would specify who they were to be used against. If a proper privateer with a letter of marque against, say, the One Sith, choose to raid a GA fleet, that's for said pirate to deal with. We keep a list of who is working for us at any time. Will someone at some point blame the Republic for something we didn't do? It's impossible to say. Probably. People surprise me on a daily basis. That doesn't mean we shouldn't utilize all resources available to us.

[member="Janira Fenni"] It is a valid tactic the British Empire used it against the French and Spanish and everyone really. As it was cheap effective way to attack your enemy. If they did some thing wrong, you can remove the letter of marque, and then prosecute them. So effectively denying responsibly, for their actions.

Teeechnically, if no one has revoked it, I wanna say I passed a bill authorizing the hiring of privateers when I was FO and SC.

You weren't really the British Empire in WWII. Empires do good and bad, but the good never outweighs the bad.

IRL, nearly all countries used privateers during the 15th-19th century. But the discussion here is about bringing them into the Republic, and whether or not it will provide interesting opportunities for players and characters.

I like the way you think you, you amazing man, you. I have a pair of factions, one my own, that could be reached out to. And if wanted smuggling of good guys out of the bad guy territory could be a thing we do. Or the smuggling in of good stuff the people who are good. Anti-sith literature, or things of that nature
