What're those?

Dominions are generally factions vs environment (though it can be vs other players/factions depending on circumstances). They are used for major factions to acquire territory without invading other factions territory.

Invasions are used when a major faction wants to control a planet that another major faction controls. They invade that world, and the two factions engage in war (PvP) where the writers come together and collectively fight, and after a pre-determined amount of time, a victor is declared. If the invading faction wins, they take the planet from the other faction.

Just because the lovely [member="Jamie Pyne"] didn't mention it:

A skirmish is a PvP setting in which no land is disputed. A faction (minor or major) attacks a planet owned by another faction, but does not attempt to capture the land itself as one would in an invasion.

Technically neither have to be agreed upon. If a major faction wants to invade another, they tell the other faction. You can't decline an invasion, but you can negotiate to delay it. The same with a skirmish. However, the other faction does not have to acknowledge the skirmish really. They can decide not to participate, whereas there is no real consequence. They won't lose territory over a skirmish. If a major faction ignores an invasion, that invasion will still happen and they would lose the planet if they don't participate in its' defense.

Ignoring RP is definitely not a polite thing to do, but it's also not against the rules to do so.

And yes, it is polite to agree to both, however neither party is obligated. A major faction can't decline an invasion though, even if they don't want to do it.

I've always assumed it polite to agree both invasions
Major factions cannot ignore an invasion. Major faction staff are required to negotiate the terms of an invasion with the opposing faction, and if the minimum member count of 5 members per side do not participate then the invasion is forfeit and the faction which did not show automatically concedes defeat.

Before an Invasion begins, Faction Leaders must convene to discuss how the Invasion will be handled by both sides to account for fairness and balance. If a compromise is not reached within 7 days, please consult the SWRP Staff Team and a Role-play Judge will be assigned.

At any point, a Major Faction may “invade” another Major Faction's occupied planet. This involves one Major Faction's members fighting for control of the planet against another Major Faction's members.

2. Both factions must have a minimum of 5 members per side. If either faction cannot meet this requirement within 72 hours of the beginning of the invasion, that faction forfeits.
