Who is Snoke?

Two sides of a singular coin

Personally, I believe Snoke is actually Plagueis as first, it wouldn't make that much of an impact, storywise, if he was just brand-new character. If you listen carefully to the official soundtrack for the force awakens, the specific piece named, Snoke, is very similar to the piece in the opera house scene in Episode III when Palpatine is telling Anakin about Darth Plagueis.

Anyways, this is where you can discuss who you believe Snoke actually is and how he will tie more into the story in Episode 8 and Episode 9.

Could be.

In new canon all we have in information regarding Plagueis is what Sidious tells Anakin to seduce him to the Dark Side in the opera scene.

And we all know that we can't really trust Sidious' word, and most likely if this is true then Sidious could've been ignorant about Plagueis' survival.

Now, this is just the loud, obnoxious opinion of a Padawan who likes to be loud, obnoxious, and brutally honest...

...But I'm pretty sure Snokes is just an ugly-as-butt person who is jelly of the New Republic for having a more colourful (and younger looking) army than him. NR's got the rainbows going on, but Snokes? He's stuck with a boring black-and-white-with-a-little-bit-of-shiny-chrome-to-shake-things-up colour scheme, and an apprentice who's 1) not very intimidating once he takes the mask off, 2) gets his face scarred by someone who's greener than a novice when it comes to REAL lightsaber combat, and 3) someone who probably has a fethton more fangirls than Snokes will ever have (I blame it on his nose).

Just my two cents xD

I feel Palpatine's story to Anakin in the Opera Scene explains that Darth Plagueis the Wise's death was the entire point of the story. It was irony how a man so powerful could keep others from death, but not himself. That entire story would have no signifigance if Darth Maul failed to kill Plaguies in his sleep like Palpatine said he did and somehow, Palpatine's already aged master managed to hide from all events that happened in the prequel AND original sagas, and then finally make a surprise reappearance after Palpatine's demise.

Just doesnt make sense to me. I think people who think Snoke and Plagueis are the same guy are overthinking it. They're the same race. That's it.

Well they could work to bring in more from the EU and have transfer essence become something that was used. I am honestly wanting him to be newish... He should be strong and interesting but have something connecting him to the previous movies. Some knowledge, some purpose or thing so "this was happening and I was sent away" He doesn't need to be some ancient and powerful sith lord in hiding.

The music used between Snoke/Ren is very similar to Palpatine/Anakin - that elongated, deathly choir music. I mean, we can't ignore the prequels and have to remember they ARE part of this overall story so I guess we won't know for sure but it's possible if they want to keep an overall threat going on from even before Episode I, to be the "one" villain linking them all.

Oh yeah. I totally know. If, of course, totally knowing is not knowing a single thing. But, then I'd be a liar, because I do know a single thing: Llamas are larger than frogs. :p

Perhaps Snoke is simply an inquisitor who survived the fall of the Empire, since the Inquisitors are Canon now and an established Dark Side/Non-sith group and Abrams stated that Ren is not a Sith.

The script writer never even knew what SW EU was, and when asked about the origins of Smoke in relation to canon, his answer was "What canon?"

Snoke was originally intended to be a woman, too, so I doubt he is Plageuis.

The novel gives a tiny hint to his origins, well, his past before 'TFA', and his feelings. Here's a snippet for those who haven't read it...

"The historians have it all wrong. It was neither poor strategy nor arrogance that brought down the Empire. You know too well what did."

Ren nodded once. "Sentiment."

"Yes. Such a simple thing. Such a foolish error of judgment. A momentary lapse in an otherwise exemplary life. Had Lord Vader not succumbed to emotion at the crucial moment - had the father killed the son - the Empire would have prevailed. And there would be no threat of Skywalker's return today."

It also reveals that he’s been working behind the scenes for quite some time, even during the Original Trilogy. In one of their several hologram chats, Snoke reveals to Ben that he actually had apprentices before the fallen Solo. But Ben shows the most promise, because he didn’t begin his training as an adept of the Dark Side, but was corrupted and fell from the light, something Snoke hadn’t experienced before.

Snoke then recalls to Ben that he saw the Empire “rise, and then fall”, and even that he knew that Darth Vader was Luke’s father. This is something that he may have learned while seducing Ben to the dark side, but in the book it’s implied that it was something he already knew at the time. The book really emphasizes that Snoke was a major presence throughout the events of the previous films, though, more than the film did—and that he has a vested interest in the Skywalker family lineage.
