Getting Out of a Fowl Mood (Skylar)

Jan VonFowl

Part-Time Party Crasher
Jan raised an eyebrow at Skylar's question, sensing that the conversation probably needed a bit more attention than he could muster while he was driving. He set the controls to autopilot and moved his chair back so he wouldn't accidentally interfere with the systems.

"I sort of assumed it was something important, and then decided I wasn't going to ask about it too much. Why?"

"Well I thought you might be curious about me and my past.." Sky cut off, but then shook her head and continued.

"My mother must have given it to me before she left me, and I've always been lucky when I wear and not lucky when I don't, so I never take it off. I think it's the reason I survived when my building fell." Skylar played with the necklace a bit before letting it hang in its familiar spot, waiting for Jan's reply.

An old line about hokey religions and ancient weapons popped into Jan's mind, but he ignored it. Luck was a solid enough belief to have. Definitely better than praying to microbes, or whatever it was that Jedi did. He smiled at Sky and gently poked her in the cheek.

"Better keep it on, then. Never know when you'll need some extra luck."

"Yea.." There was silence for a while, before Sky thought of something she'd been meaning to ask Jan.

"Why do you have stripes in your hair?" A childish question, but she thought it was fascinating and wanted to know why.

Jan grinned sidelong at Sky as he looked back out the front window and took control back from the autopilot. The stripes had been part of a bet he'd taken shortly before the last time he'd left Antecedent. At least nobody here had really gotten to see him with the weird dye job, even if he did love it to the point where people thought he was a nutjob.

"Part of a bet I lost... Sure as hell grew on me, though."

"Heh, it suits you." As she said this they pulled into the restaurant, a small one, like a cafe, but it was nice.

"Well I guess we're here."

"Well, that's at least one quirk I know you like."

Jan landed the Fowlmobile in front of the cafe-ish place. It looked nice, and something smelled like coffee. That was also nice. He got out of the speeder and walked around to slip his arm around Sky and partially scoop her out of the passenger seat.

"Coffee time, Sky."

Sky felt Jan's hand around her waist as he scooped her out of the speeder.

"I've been looking forward to it." She giggled like a kid, an innocent laugh. A few of the customers gave the couple amused looks, while others gave annoyed ones instead, but Sky payed them no heed as she and Jan were seated and given menus. She eagerly looked at the listed items.

"What are you going to get?" Skylar smiled brightly with an air of innocence she hadn't had since she was a baby. The truth was she had never really been to a nice place like this and didn't know what to get.

Jan shrugged a little as he looked over the menu. He hadn't exactly been hanging out in cafes lately, but he loved that Sky thought he knew better than she did. And that smile on her face made him happy. It didn't really sound like she'd had much to smile about before yesterday. He finally just leaned his chin on his hand and smiled back.

"Pancakes."

"Mmm sounds good." Once the waiter came and left with their orders, Sky leaned over and squeezed Jan's hand.

"So what are we doing after breakfast?" A waitress came over with their coffee and set it down with a bowl of assorted creamers and sweetenings. Sky used a few of the creamers and took a sip and sighed approvingly.

Jan sighed happily when the coffee came. And then he dumped something that was probably the equivalent of a small freighter's weight in sugar into it. Yum. He sipped at his drink, grinning at Skylar.

"After this, we're playing dress-up. We've got four hours to doll ourselves up like eccentric rich people."

Come to think of it, he didn't know how to dress like an eccentric rich person, and he was an eccentric rich person. Fun.

"Sounds fun." Sky nodded and took another sip. Wow this was good coffee. She wondered how she was going to dress up. Maybe wash her hair really really well then pull it up in a messy bun, or maybe a braid? This was going to be exciting.

"How are you going to dress up, Jan?" Sky smiled as the waiter came back with their food, which they began to dig in to hungrily.

Jan nodded and grinned as he began tearing into a stack of pancakes that was probably bigger than his head. Yum. He stopped and took a moment to drink some more coffee, sighing happily again. Then he smiled at Skylar again.

"Well, that is what you're helping me decide. Only clothes I ever picked out for myself are the ones I'm wearing."

Then he put down his coffee and put the rest of his pancakes out of their misery.

Sky laughed and followed in Jan's stead and devoured the pancakes, leaving a bit of one on her lip, before asking another question.

"Have your ever crashed a party like this before, Jan?"

Jan slipped his arm around Sky after they finished eating, smiling at her question. Of course he'd crashed a few parties before. Who hadn't? Never something as fancy as this one, though.

"Bar parties, casino parties, stuff like that. Never a gala or anything like the one today."

He found himself looking at his girlfriend's face, and leaned in to kiss her as he noticed the pancake crumbs on her lips.

"Mmm, syrupy."

"So this'll be new for both of us. Well th- Mmph!" Jan's kiss cut off whatever Sky was going to say, and her mind went blank for a second, until Jan pulled away. She smiled shyly and chided Jan teasingly.

"Jan! I forgot what I was going to say!"

Jan smiled back at Skylar, squeezing her and nuzzling her with his cheek a little. It felt weird, but really good, showing affection towards another person.

"My kisses are that distracting, huh?"

He moved his chair over a little bit so he could be more comfortably cuddly.

"Anyway, you seemed to be saying 'well, then'. And now you're doing your whole cute shy bit."
