Roman grinned as
Kuhbee
jogged back onto the court, a determined glint in his eyes.
"Alright, cub!" he boomed, slapping a high-five onto Kuhbee's outstretched hand.
"Let's see what you can really do, huh?" He was genuinely eager to witness the young one's skills. As he turned his attention back to the game, his gaze swept across the court, and he caught a blur of motion out of the corner of his eye. Vera. And a dodgeball on a direct collision course with his chest.
His eyes widened in a brief moment of panic, his mind scrambling for a way to avoid the hit. It was coming in hot, no time to dodge, before, a strange purple light flickered into existence, a circular rune hanging mid-air between him and the ball. The ball vanished, swallowed by the rune as if it were a hungry monster. Roman's jaw dropped, his gaze snapping to
Vera Noble
.
Of course she could do something like that, he thought, a mix of awe and exasperation bubbling within him.
As he was still trying to process the disappearing ball, he registered another faint shimmer, the hum of energy, and a second rune appeared behind him. His head swiveled, recognizing the danger immediately.
Oh chit. But before he could react, a blur of limbs and a muffled
thump told him that his luck had changed, slightly.
Aadihr Lidos
had done something crazy acrobatic and was in between him and the incoming projectile.
"Thanks, friend," Roman said, giving Aadhir a thumbs up, before catching himself and awkwardly lowering his hand. Right, the Miraluka probably couldn't
see thumbs up. The gesture fell flat and Roman felt a bit foolish. He focused on the game again, moving to stand in front of Aadhir to provide some cover for his friend as he recovered. It was time to retaliate.
Roman launched ball after ball back at Vera, his brow furrowed in concentration. He was bound and determined to get that pesky Noble child out. He almost had her… just one more throw... before the world went into slow motion and a dozen balls soared through the air in his direction, all at the very same time. Roman's eyes widened in shock, but he was unable to react in time. The onslaught of dodgeballs hit him from all angles, leaving him stunned and defeated. He stumbled to the side, a loud sigh escaping his lips.
Walking towards the bench, he plopped down heavily, his gaze meeting Vera's smirking face. He stuck his tongue out at her, a playful gesture. At least she hadn't gotten him out. Not
directly, anyway. Besides, he was sure he'd get her next time.
