Mission to Taris

There comes a time in which one needs to stop relying on others, suck up their fears, and take on their problems head-on. That kiddo in class that sleeps through the entire lecture and then bullies their peers into sharing their notes? Yeah, tell that guy off. That lady at the grocery store who doesn't understand that her coupon's expired and there's nothing the employees could do about it? Put her in her place, she totally deserves it.

Now, of course, there were times where the issues are just too over the head for those afflicted. Like that armed robbery with hostages and everything. No need to be the hero there. No, it was a much better route to let the trained folk attempt the heroism thing.

And that, Sundara assumed, was exactly why they were even on Taris.

She had her doubts about this whole mission, sure. Like why had the council opted to assign such a mission to both a knight and a master? It seemed a bit excessive, like the council was expecting bigger opposition than they'd initially described. Regardless, there was a job to be done. One that Sundara would probably see through to the end. Better yet, even if something went horribly wrong, there was an even better chance her partner in this mission would see it through. Speaking of partner, Sundara was ready to go, she wasn't so sure about the other guy.

"Ready whenever you are, Master Graendal," she said, keeping a respectable distance from the Jedi Master. "Apparently these gangs aren't going to stop themselves."

Expecting heavy opposition wasn't the usual mindset of the Council. Rather, entrusting two bright minds to accomplish a task was it down to the letter. Padawans were always encouraged to undertake missions and tasks with their masters, but the Jedi Order had been lacking in minds and bodies to dispatch to quell these disturbances that had been cropping up. They were not warriors and they were not politicians, they were guardians and diplomats. Getting the job done and spreading hope was the name of the game.

The Council had just picked two of their best players to throw on the field.

A very wise decision, Lan thought.

Sundara stepped off the shuttle long before he did. The Jedi Master opted to remain just a tad longer, thanking their pilot for being able to take them halfway across the galaxy on such short notice. With a broad smile and a whip of his cloak, he stepped off onto the landing platform onto the booming metropolis of Taris. It was a world very much similar to Coruscant, albeit to a lesser degree in both sheer size and population. A little brother or cousin, so to speak.

They stood on a platform in the upper city. Trees and parks filled the center whilst an assortment of beings trode down the flanks. Various shops, stalls, markets, and even a medical center lined it. The atmosphere was light, like a Sunday afternoon following religious services. Kids played and begged their parents to buy them things on flashing, neon lights and your average blue-collar worker power-walked to and fro as they desperately made for their workplaces.

"I'm always ready," Lan replied. "Shall we take to the lower city immediately, or are you up for a little sight-seeing?"

He smiled. Whichever route they chose, the Force would ultimately guide them.

Sundara was momentarily taken aback by the image their objective had created versus the sight they'd stepped off to. The gentle hustle and bustle of the upper city bore a stark contrast to any area Sundara'd normally consider under threat of gangs. This was the type of place that came out of works of fiction, the part of town where a kid could play with little care for what else was out there and parents could entrust that their kids would be home by dinner.

It was the kind of place one could settle down in, at least Sundara thought. You could live a pretty wholesome life here and scarcely worry about intergalactic politics or what forces were at power in the galaxy. Why, the knight could almost envision herself in such a place, whether it be some alternate universe where she'd never been taken in by the Jedi or the even less likely future in which retirement was somehow an option.

It was as tempting as it was a foolish thought. Sundara had committed to this life of service some time ago and had every intention to see it through to the end. Half wishful thinking aside, she simply couldn't see herself retiring anytime remotely soon. That didn't stop her from wanting to see more, though.

To Master Graendal's question, she offered a bit of a shrug, something to mask her padawan-like enthusiasm. "If we've got the time, I wouldn't mind sight-seeing. What would you prefer, Master Graendal? More importantly, can this mission afford the slight detour?"
