OLD Factory Q&A

Not open for further replies.
So I have a question regarding Witchcraft. In the SWU, most anything associated with Witchcraft is Darkside in nature for the exception of a few spells I see here by some of the writers that have Witch based characters.

My question is this: I know there isn't much in the way fo creating new Force abilities, I think everything that is everything has been covered. But what about creating spells through lightside magick? If the work is put into it and it is made to sound reasonable, can it be possible.

Let me add that I would not attempt a lighter version of necormancy, that's bad already but something different. I don't have a single example to use other than creating a spell that revives a dead tree or plant. Those and human physiology are different and I think the Force could be used to do such a thing (again no proof that exists) but I'm referring to a spell not Force infused.

We do not judge/review/approve force abilities in the factory or codex. You are free to use the force as you interpret it, and its use is relatively unlimited. Simply follow the site rules and you will be fine.

Wait so is there a place where these type of things would be submitted or reviewed? Reason I ask is I remember back when I started there was an issue with Dar'rak here having Force Lightning abet a very underdeveloped version as a Padawan. I also see 'training threads' listed on a lot of profiles I sneak into and read. Is that no longer a thing and something that got phased out somewhere? I know character development wise it is good to have RP where one is training and honing a certain skill but is it no longer a requirement that I thought it was?

No, we have not ever and never will judge/review/approve force abilities.

Huh....

Well Thank you for that [member="Darth Vitium"]. You've been a very helpful Sith Lord and hope to possibly meet you in the Thread with the space squid and Galactic Force Storm. I had nothing to do with either of those, honest.

Question: Can Factory Subs' Development threads be used for multiple items? For example say a material requires 10 posts and a starship requires 40. If the topic were 50 posts would that work for both of them? On a related note, what if the requirementss for one of the restructed materials was met durring a development thread for something else. Could it still be used for the suggested material as well?

Ok one more I think... How many people can benafit from a single Development thread? Reason i ask is becasue my Lightsaber thread now has 3 posters and while they are nice enough to help me along for my own development I wanted to know if they could also use their own posts for their own thing as well. If so inclined.

  1. Generally, yes. Assuming you are only using it for those two submissions and you are being asked specific for 10 (or 20) posts for item one, and you are being asked for 30 (or 20, or any other combination of the two) posts for item two (say a lightsaber and a starship), you should be fine doing it with them both. However, you cannot use a development thread used for a restricted material (let's say cortosis) for another restricted material (let's say ultrachrome) or other submission except in very circumstantial cases - which is explained in our Restricted & Banned Materials list in the Restricted Materials list rules. You cannot double-dip a 40 post stygium development thread (just an example) for two starship submissions that require it (again, only in circumstantial instances - which you should ask when the circumstance arises).
  2. I think this is answered in my answer for your first question, but it's very circumstantial. It would be better to ask when you have the thread ready and have a general idea of what you are submitting. For example, if you submit an unique Phrik armor with a development thread that fulfills Ultrachrome at the same time you will likely not be permitted to use that thread for that other submission.
  3. Everyone who is involved in a development thread can benefit from the thread as long as they complete the requirements of the restricted materials they wish to utilize the thread for. And if it isn't for a restricted material? Everyone who participates can utilize the thread for development, as long as they contributed to it.

I have a few questions that I would like to ask.

1) I know that Phrik and other such materials have an immunity to lightsabers, but, does that immunity carry over to things like Force-Imbued Swords (Jedi/Je'daii Katanas) and Sith Swords? Or would it just become a typical sword against a highly durable plate of metal situation?

2) If you look at the Wookipedia page for Sith Swords, it seems to list a couple of stages. The transmutation of metal into an alchemical metal that resists lightsabers and such, then an alteration to the atomic structure to keep it ever sharp and clean and finally a reverse of its magnetic polarity that makes it able to reflect blasters and lasers. If I'm reading the page right, would it be possible to only use one stage and miss out the others?

3) If the answer to the above question is yes, and since from how the Wookiepedia page reads, would simply reversing the magnetic polarity alter the weight of a sword? Especially considering the Wookie page makes it sound like it is the transmuted metal that alters the weight.

4) If I were to have Xavka wear Alchemised Terentetek Hide armour, would he not be able to use Force Steal and Cloak? Would they be nullified by it?

(Edited to add Q3 & 4 as they are recent problems that came up in my plotting.)

[member="Darth Vitium"] I think I get it. I cannot use the same posts for two different developments but if the topic exceeds the required posts for both together they may be used. Makes sense. No double dipping from the same post.

So is doing two restricted materials in a single thread is not allowed. Is that per poster or period? Meaning my posts that complete an objective for one type of restricted material and another's who somehow completes a different objective, for a different one, we could not both get it? What if I were to somehow manage to complete two different Objectives in the same thread, such as the Invasion one?

While I am note sure what it would be used for, My character could be open for the following materials for example.
Cortosis as I am beginning a duel with a Dark Side force user.
Impervium Again because of the same duel as above, if I happen to win and escape to duel another within the same thread.
Ionite I almost managed to do this unintentionally but there were no other vehicles in the area that I am aware of.
Pyronium Not sure how one goes between Tiers for Dominions but Dar'rak is in one right now. Not sure if it is T1 or T3.
Ultrachrome This is a big one as I almost have this one already in my Development thread for my Lightsaber and the main reason for the question after reading its requirements. Should another PC somehow be able to be on the same seemingly hostile planet that would be the "two or more characters your character is not familiar with, become trapped in hostile territory and escape". With my ship in a tree and him without one, all we'd need is one more PC to become trapped correct? As an NPC could not be used to complete this objective.

So While I could use my thread for my Lightsaber as that is the intent, could it also be used for the Ultrachrome objective for either myself or my posting partner(s) if they so choose?

[member="Darth Lykos"] Can I just say that this last line makes me a little worried? Though not a Judge, I would not think that changing the mangetics of anything would change its weight. Since weight is derived from the force of Gravity on an object and no so much the magnetic polarity of it. Though if the new metal weighs differently that would make sense to me. Like changing something from aluminum to steel.

  1. They are resistant, given time even phrik and beskar melt when exposed to the blade of a lightsaber. That being said, force imbued blades and sith swords generally are already lightsaber resistant, so unless your purpose was to remove that lightsaber resistance than there is no reason why it should not remain such.
  2. Yes, you can go with just one stage or go with them all - have fun with it. It's always nice to see a piece of alchemy that isn't by default resistant to the blade of a lightsaber.
  3. It is the process of sith alchemy in which materials are added to the sith sword (or that's how the wording seems to be on the wookieepedia article, there's no straightforward explanation of what causes the weight increase) which changes the weight. Generally we'll be looking for a weight change if you want a sith sword to be able to block lightsabers and for other such things which would necessitate it. If you're making an amulet that helps you focus, though, we're not going to ask for it to weigh an absurd amount.
  4. Terentateks do not nullify the force - the closest thing to nullifying the force would be a Ysalamir. If the terentatek dampens or reduces the effect of the force on your character, however, then yes - it would impact your character as well.

It's per character.

So if you complete two objectives with Dar'ral you can choose one of the two restricted materials and use the thread for that. This will not make someone else unable to utilize that thread.

Isamu Baelor

Protector of The Iron Realm
I need some clarification on starship armament, and defensive, ratings. It's something that I just can't get my head around.

So, using the Heavy Cruiser Template, and the Capitol Ship Weapons Exchange Chart, as an example:

400 Turbolasers, 20 Heavy Warhead Launchers, and 30 Quad lasers would equal about 1,120 "points" per the value chart. Assuming I'm on the ball with what each thing is worth.

So, if I were to sub a heavy cruiser, I would have 1,120 points to play around with, in arming it. Assuming it's a no-dev sub.

And here's the confusion. A number of former, and current, Factory Judges have told me a turbolaser has a value of 1, while the chart lists it at 2. So I'm a little confused by conflicting info. Any clarification would be great.

Additionally, what is the difference between an armament rating of, let's say, 15 as opposed to 16? I'm assuming that 15 would have a lower overall point, but by how much?

Same with defensive ratings. What constitutes a rating of 15 versus 16?

So yea, I'm likely dropping the ball hard with how this is all works. So any clarification would be super appreciated.

When looking at armament rating, rather than looking at a gun count, what we look at turbolaser equivalents. i.e; How many turbolasers is this gun worth.

The gun value chart shows how much each type of emplacement is worth versus the other (so a turbolaser is worth 2 defensive emplacements, a quad turbolaser is worth 8 defensive emplacements but 4 turbolasers) rather than the actual numbers we look for.

So regarding your total amount of weapons on the proposed vanilla heavy cruiser, that'd be 400 Turbolasers + 30 Quad Lasers (15 Turbolasers Worth) + 20 Heavy Warheads (200 Turbolasers worth), or 630 turbolasers worth of weapons to work with at 16 Armament rating.

We don't have a conversion chart or a set equation for how much an armament rating means in terms of gun math, so we'd be looking for a range that is somewhat lower than the example 16. The amount of guns on a ship, however, is secondary to the rating you put. If you put 500 turbolasers worth of guns on a ship and call it 15 then you'll be fine, same thing if you put 550, or anything reasonably close to 16's 630 while remaining below it. An armament rating 15 ship is going to be an armament rating 15 ship regardless of if another 15 has a handful more guns or not.

Isamu Baelor said:

16 is just more heavily defended (maybe a reinforced hull?) as compared to a 15. There's no exact definition of one versus the other.

You don't have to sweat the exact details of gun math, just make a reasonable list of weapons and put an armament rating on it and you'll be golden. Regarding defense ratings, the same thing can be said of that - features like shield types, hull strength, can impact it. We, the factory, look more heavily at your rating than the weapons or defenses that are given that rating. So if you have 650 turbolasers, 630 turbolasers, or 700 turbolasers (these are just examples, not hard limits/numbers) you can still put a 16 armament rating and be just fine.
