Question: What is the Process for Making a Lightsaber?

Rakieh Atur

The Watchman's Apprentice
So I've been wondering: what is the process for making a lightsaber? Is this one of those things where I have a 50 post thread and then submit a factory dealio and wait for approval? If so, what sort of things do dev threads encompass? This would be my first time doing something like this so I'm a bit confused as to what the process is.

Well, Factory is closed right now while they revamp it to not include Dev threads. So...that part is out. For now.

As far as they go, if you're using a plain, vanilla lightsaber you can just say you built it. No thread needed. I personally prefer having threads for items like that, as do some others, and as such they make build threads. Depending on the special features you include, you may be asked to submit your lightsaber to the Factory for PVP balancing, and if it's excessively overpowered will be asked to tone it down and/or make a dev thread for this. Of course, that last part was when the Factory was open and dev threads were a thing, so we'll see there.

What kind of features were you looking to have in your lightsaber?

I can confirm that there is no need for a Factory sub if all you're looking for is a normal lightsaber, without any special components like rare materials, etc. The Factory would be overflowing with lightsabers if such was the case. :p

Thanks for information guys, it really helps a lot.

I wasn't looking to do anything too fancy, but i wanted his first lightsaber to be more like a light spear, if that makes any sense. It would look kinda like this:

My only concern at that point would be the shaft, which would be vulnerable to lightsaber strikes, so i was considering making it out of beskar, but i don't know how factory judges would take that and what i would have to do if i went that route

Beskar is a restricted material and thus you'd need to complete one of the following objectives:

Cira said:
Objective: Perform a mining operation, a raid, an excavation, or steal to obtain Mandalorian Iron Ore from any of the following planets: Mandalore, Concordia, Echo'lya –OR— inflict a devastating defeat on a Mandalorian character and have them verify it. Characters belonging to the Major Faction whose influence covers Mandalore and/or Concordia are exempt from fulfilling this objective.

Which also means you'd have to go through the Factory for judge approval. However I'd wait for a bit considering we're in the middle of discussing removing development threads entirely, and we don't know how that'll affect restricted materials yet.

[member="Thurion Heavenshield"] The factory updated the policy on beskar and phrik. You no longer need to do a mining thread for any item set at unique production, thank God.

This rule covers Beskar, Phrik, Cortosis, Songsteel, Echani Graphite, Ionite, & Pyronium.

Looking at what [member="Rakieh Atur"] wants to do, he should be able to get this through the Factory with zero issue.

No matter which of the situations i have to endure (what Suravi mentioned being nothing it seems), I'm quite happy knowing it can't be all that difficult. I appreciate the help! It means a lot. I was super confused as to what I would need to do, and now everything has been cleared up. Thanks guys!

[member="Suravi Teigra"] Yeah, it is a little confusing. I feel if I did a little more reading though I would have eventually found what I was looking for.

Do we have any idea when the factory is supposed to be up and running again?

I hope you don't mind if I base my pike heavily off of your design. Also was planning to use Bes'kar but kinda thinking of having a wooden trim. Also on the site you used there are two long shafts for lightsaber pikes.

I dont mind at all [member="Vitha Sat-thuron"]

Yeah, I saw those, but I didn't find them particularly appealing, as they were slightly thinner than the average handle and I thought it looked kind of odd.

Keep in mind that beskar is heavy. A beskar finish or casing would mitigate the weight but also lessen the protection somewhat. That isn't to say it's not doable, just giving you that heads up.

No, i appreciate that... How much heavier are we talking? I just placed some subs into the pre-factory, and I don't think i got the weight right with the information you just presented me

Thing is though weight in a lightsaber pike is a good thing. With the fact it can be used very effectively for non-lethal or as a club against an armoured opponent. Plus you can reverse the bottom up in an attack like you would with the rear blade of a saberstaff.

Perhaps. If i wasn't trying to mimic traditional spear play with it, youd most definitely be right. Not that using it as a club and being a bit more flexable with how it could be used isn't bad, I just don't seem him two handing it enough to offset the energy expended using in the form it was designed for, Ataru.

Or maybe I'm putting too much thought into it.
