The Girl and The Robot

“I guess so.” Kaili shrugged as she continued prodding around at the eggs. “Figured we’ll get it started. Keep mind off of... Things.” More like people, but that was hardly something that needed to be said. “Why don’t you give the magnetic toy a lookover while I cook, huh? Get to know it and all that.”

The eggs were still frying in the pan, the thin-sliced meat pieces still cooking in the pan. The smoky smell spread throughout. Kaili had her full attention on not burning anything. Yesterday made a good reminder of what absent-mindedness could bring.

“Remember, the force is a part of you as much as it is a part of it. Focus on yourself and expand your own mind until you can see the-” Why was teaching so annoyingly abstract? “Fark it, nevermind. Just focus on the toy. With practice you will become accustomed to the way it work with the force.”

The eggs were just about done. Kaili continued to stir them around for good measure. Flipping the meat all the while.

"You sound like one of those old man Jedi when you talk like that." Allyson stood up from the table and wandered towards her pack where she had put the toy after she messed with it the other day. Grabbing it she wandered back and sat at the the table. She could smell the smokey from the pan and just smiled. It was nice to have someone cook you food and not have to pay them. She placed it down on the table and stared at it. It was different and there weren't any schematics to mentally download. So Allyson was left blank.

"When I use the force on Bait I can see how he functions, I can't really do that on this. All I see is a blob with static all around it." Frowning, she figured the static was what she was trying to manipulate. Resting her head on her hand, she leaned on the table and sighed. The static was electricity, which was in machines as well, energy and the force were the same right? "Any particular shape you want? Or still the rectangle?" Frowning, Allyson mentally went to work, the putty moved and took shape at first into the triangle. Groaning with frustration she decided not to be so forceful on one direction. Spreading the influence she moved each side till it became a cube.

"Well close enough. How good are you with this thing?" [member="Kaili Talith"]

She did sound like one of those old Jedi when she talked like that because in a sense she was old Jedi like that. Or well, jedi at least. Her mother had instilled that in all of her children. Do the right thing, steer away from the dark side. Never give into passion and always be vigilant of what you do. Kira was a very good mother, but since they had only just gotten themselves out of a pit of lonesome despair there was no need to go back in there with a ‘talk’ about how great mothers are. Lucky was Kaili who got an opportunity to show off in front of her new student.

Her first student, come to think of it.

The food was deposited onto a plate each. With one hand extended Kaili ensured that one plate hovered ever so gently over to Allyson and landed in front of her. With a swift grab at the second plate, Kaili walked over to the dining booth to take a seat opposite of her.

“Well, since you ask.” Kaili gave Allyson a grin. The kind of grin that said ‘Oh, I can show you.’ With all the cockiness that came with the attitude. “Here.”

The puddy slowly lifted from the ground. Kaili closed her eyes and focused on the toy. Shaping, shifting and forming all that it was into something new. At a far more rapid pace the gelly seemed to assume a pose. It split in two. Feet were formed, legs took shape and not long after a small miniature of Allyson stood proud next to the real-deal’s drinking glass.

“Or,” Kaili’s grin was still going. “We can try this.”

The figure animated. Arms reaching for the ground to catch its fall.

It took a seat in front of the plate that Allyson was eating off of.

“Nothing too serious, you know.” Oh that grin. That grin that could devour spilling. “Just a decade of practice and daily use.”

[member="Allyson Locke"]

“Oh now you’re just showing off.”

The display of control and finesse with the toy impressed and also created a little jealousy in Allyson. The mention of a decade with the toy meant that Kaili had the toy since she was eight years old. The benefits of having parents who were force sensitive, they knew what they had to do to hone the girl’s talents. Using a fork she stabbed through one of the eggs and began to eat as she watched the miniature replica of herself move and then sit in front of her. “Impressive.” She also reminded herself that Kaili had a better connection to the Force than she did - which also made her a little jealous. The Force barely touched Allyson, the only thing she was capable was with machines. Her nose wrinkled slightly as she took another bite of the food.

“Its good breakfast yep.” It was the best she could do praise wise between bites. She kept her eyes locked onto the toy as she tried to understand it the best she could. Shaking her head, she was over thinking all of it. It was just like a magnet. Laughing, she leaned back in the booth and shook her head. “Magnets. It's what helps it keep its shape, well no magnets inside of the toy I presume it's the field around the toy that reacts to the Force to help shape it. Though I never even thought or did anything with that well consciously until now.” A breakthrough as she took another bite of the food and looked at Kaili.

“You’re a good teacher, I’m lucky, Master.” Allyson mused at her small discovery and knew it was just going to get better from here on out. This also meant she would be closer to learning how to break locks with the Force. A very handy trick any smuggler would need to have. The Underground business would benefit the most from that handy skill. “So if I use this toy a lot and master manipulating it, I’ll be better with technomancy? Are there other things I can do besides play mold the putty?” [member="Kaili Talith"]

Kaili smiled. Both at Allyson’s realisation and the compliment. There was something to what Allyson was saying. Eight years with the toy had attuned Kaili to the entirety of the magnetic little toy, and she was a pretty good master too. It was the magnetic fields that were being manipulated, not the item itself. That was, indeed, why Allyson would find herself running uphill when she tried to use brute force to make the toy bow to her will.

If it was any consolation, Kaili had done the exact same when she first started out.

“Well, good then,” Kaili’s smile turned into a grin again.” ... Apprentice.”

“Oh you can do a lot of things. Not all of it would be... Socially acceptable, but I haven’t really let that stop me.” Kaili shrugged and the grin turned back into a smile. “You can trick any machine into doing what you want. Candy dispensers, lock mechanisms... It’s all in what and how you get to know it.”

“Other than that?” Kaili shrugged again. “Assembling droids, disassembling droids... Utterly destroying them. Though I tend to keep the droid experimentation to a minimum.”

Headshake. “It feels a bit like murder-torture, you know?”

[member="Allyson Locke"]

Allyson nodded. There were so many uses for this skill and it made her not feel so useless. Of course she wished she could have the same skills as all the other Force users that she’d met along the way. They seemed so complete with it and comfortable within the Force. On the other hand, Allyson felt so alien to the whole concept. She felt as if someone just marked her and went along their way without telling her what the mark was for and why her’s was a different color or something like that. The analogy in her mind was silly, so she refrained from mentioning it.

“Ah, I can see why some people wouldn’t appreciate some of the things that can be done. Though in a jam they seem to be the most useful.” Allyson pondered things like being arrested by a local government for smuggling or other work she could and probably would pick up. Diving into the meat, she took a bite and moaned with satisfaction as she took another bite. “Meat’s really good Kaili.” Another nod, she looked down at Bait who was still ‘sleeping’ for the most part. “When I put Bait’s arm on, I asked permission, it's funny though I felt as if Bait was helping me.” Shrugging, she looked back away from the Droid.

“Ships, I can do things with ships. I always feel like I have to ask permission - it's funny how willing something is to trust you especially if it's broken.” Allyson mused over the Sith Lord and his broken ship. “Using this to destroy something seems unnecessary. Is there a way let's say a droid is like a war droid and I’m like ‘oh no don’t kill me’”, Allyson leaned back in the booth and mimicked an overreaction of her being scared. “Is it possible to control and change its wiring like how the Jedi can mind trick people?” Leaning onto the table she looked at Kaili.

“Do we have droid mind tricks?” She was wide eyed and full of curiosity. [member="Kaili Talith"]

In all honesty the rest of the abilities that the other force users could employ were all overrated. If you found the thing you loved, and if you happened to have an affinity for it, then there was no shame in focusing on that. It was a bit like eating a sandwich. Yes, you could go for one with all, but the taste would be bland and boring after a while. However, focus on the one particular ingredient you liked and expand from there, and you had a greater chance at truly mastering it.

Though little did internal monologuing matter.

“I’d like to think Bait was drawn to you much like you was drawn to him.” Kaili looked at the droid. “So yeah, a droid mind trick, I guess. Only a little bit more unintentionally intrusive. They seek you out, because you can speak their tongue without speaking a word at all. You just understand them, and you understand exactly what they need.”

“Asking for permission is, in the end, really just a courtesy owed.”

Kaili finished eating her food. Took the last sip of her tea and looked to the door at the other side of the room.

“So, you said explore the island, right?” Kaili turned back to Ally. “Anything specific you had in mind?”

[member="Allyson Locke"]

“Sounds about right. I do remember when I was salvaging on Jakku, he was beeping for help. Of course, because I apparently took too long he got impatient and started yelling at me. Found the little booger in pieces had to put him together on the spot.” Chuckling, Allyson finished her plate as well. Kaili mentioned something about exploring and Allyson remembered it was something she had wanted to do. It was a rare treat to be on a planet that she didn’t have to salvage on or smuggle something on or off. It was like a vacation sort of. Musing over the possibilities of a grand adventure, she grabbed both plates and headed to the sink. Kaili made breakfast it was only polite to thank her by doing the dishes.

“Anything that doesn’t involve me scrapping or smuggling. I don’t really want to head into any of the towns. There seems to be a lot of vegetation on the Island.” Rinsing the plates off she continued to clean and put them in the small washer to be sanitized. “Anything cool to explore like hidden caves or anything”

Remembering a book and probably one of the only books she had ever read in her life. Allyson wandered back to the table and leaned against it looking towards Kaili. “There has to be an underwater caverns or something to explore around here?” Laughing, she joked about the underwater cavern. Though the book of course had an underwater cavern and a monster living inside. Still, it sounded pretty fun - even if it didn’t exist. “Anyways I’m sure we can find ourselves some trouble to get into, of course if you’re up for it Master.” [member="Kaili Talith"]

There they went. Jakku, again! As weird as it felt to say, Allyson was not the first one in her shop who had been there. More to the point, she was not the only one who had entered the shop that had found or bought a BB-unit that had been located off of the eponymous desert planet. It was a weird sort of influx in popularity. Kaili couldn’t really blame them though. The BB-unit was solid in design. A tool underestimated by almost everyone, and underutilized by the few that owned them.

Not Allyson though.

“Well, we do have hidden caves.” Kaili mused as she got out of her seat and tilted her head ever so graciously at Allyson doing the dishes. “Plenty of wildlife too.”

Most of which, Kaili never really got along with.

“I am not much for being underwater.” Kaili shrugged. “Besides, are you certain moving around half-naked is what we want to do right now?” Memories of yesterday and the beach. Kaili gently shook her head. “Might be something nearby. There’s plenty of jungle out there.”

[member="Allyson Locke"]

Allyson tilted her head at the mention of running around half naked. Her perverted mind wanted to say yes. It was hard to deny the fact that Kaili looked fantastic in her bathing suit yesterday. The thought made her unknowingly bite her lower lip as she remembered the way the fabric clung to her and left the funner bits to the imagination. The wonderful thought was soon replaced by the feeling of rejection. Yesterday wasn’t her best day - especially with being rejected by a girl that said she wanted to, but that she wasn’t ready.

Nodding, Allyson showed her agreement with Kaili and did her best to push the thought of the blonde in her waterproof underwear out of her mind. Thoughts like that were what tormented her more than the back and forth of Kaili’s emotions. Folding her arms in front of her, she thought over the idea of wild animals. This meant that they could come into contact with one and possible get attacked - though she assumed they were more afraid of making contact with them than them making contact with the animals. Shrugging, she pushed herself off the table.

“Let’s go into the caves and see what we can find. There has to be some sort of treasure or something down there. Especially since I feel like this Island isn’t visited too often by people randomly looking through the jungles.” Once again remembering the wildlife, Allyson grinned. “I’ll protect your pretty blonde head from the wildlife - don’t you worry [member="Kaili Talith"].” Allyson used this moment to move towards the place where she slept to grab another outfit of clothing. She quickly changed and pulled on a pair of boots. Digging deeper she pulled out a small blaster and strapped it with its holster on her thigh. Dusting herself off, she adjusted the v-neck collar of her white shirt and waited by the door. Looking down at her watch she waited for Kaili. "If you take any longer the animals are going to be extinct before I get to protect you from them." Thinking she tilted her head and chuckled under her breath. "Or protect them from you"

There was a euphemism there. Kaili didn’t say it outright, there was no need for it. Even if mention of ‘going into caves’ was almost too good not to. But considering the present company, feelings and overall mood, there was little good that would come out of it. Instead Kaili got herself changed. Jungles weren’t exactly dangerous. The only real danger would be getting lost. The kid quickly got herself changed before sneaking into her coffin to check her datapad. As much as home was great, home was still home. Home was not a new place, but Borleias was a planet made entirely out of tropical islands. There was bound to be an island or two with little in the way of people living on it.

“I’m coming, I’m coming!” Kaili called back to Allyson after barely picking up the sound of her voice. “Was just checking out an island a bit further south-southwest from here.”

The kid knelt down on the ground to let Henry climb up on her arm and place himself on her shoulder.

“Anleidnin.” Kaili instructed her droid to keep it in memory. “Henry will help us not get lost. He’s good at that.”

A wary eye set on the blaster by Allyson’s thigh.

“Hope we don’t have to use that.”

[member="Allyson Locke"]

While Kaili was getting ready, the sound of beeping echoed as Bait was scolding Allyson about not waking him up for this fun mission. He continued to beep despite her apologizing quickly and mentioning things that they had talked about before hand. Not caring, he spun around her and then ran over her feet. Cursing, Allyson knelt down and rubbed her toes through the leather boots. He calmed down by the time Kaili had wandered over and looked at the weapon at Allyson’s leg.

Having attention brought to it, Allyson blinked. “I hope not as well, but I have it just in case. There’s no reason for us to not be prepared for the worse.” Frowning, she looked away and slung her pack which was somewhat empty over her back. “I can’t let anything happen to you.” The concept of Kaili being a Force Master didn’t register for Allyson. All she thought of is these wild creatures that lived in the jungle of Borleias.

Leaving the home, Bait and Allyson were followed by Kaili and Henry. The smaller droid would help with keeping them from becoming lost, which made Allyson feel a bit at ease. A part of her didn’t mind getting lost in the jungle with Kaili, having to survive on the land until they were able to find society. Daydreaming was cut short as Bait ran over her toes again in his own way of telling her to stop daydreaming and to get going. Bait was a huge fan of Adventures, he was excited because they were going to actually be doing something.

“Okay Okay. Kaili, you and Henry lead the way? You know if anything is on the island you said you were looking at?” Allyson wouldn’t have minded if the adventure turned into a salvaging expedition, extra cash would help especially after last night’s dinner. [member="Kaili Talith"]

“Nothing would happen to me, though I appreciate the thought.” Kaili grabbed her keys and headed for the door. “Might be a factory or two, though the island ought to be big enough for the two of us to not run into them. Ought to be.”

Allyson was ushered through one door and another with Kaili following close behind, locking the door and ensuring three times over that she did. All things considered this was the first time in a long while where she left home to go somewhere rather far away. Far away enough for her to not take the risk of burglars. Not that they had much on her homemade anti-theft system any way, but still...

“We can grab a cab to a nearby island after which we should be able to rent a boat to take us to where we need to go.” Kaili brought out her pad to check everything again. “By my estimates that’s... Roughly three hours just to get there.”

Deep sigh. There was an alternative to that in her garage. Hidden underneath a huge white blanket cover. Kaili didn’t like using her own speeder. Not since the crash. Maybe one day that would change, but not any time soon.

Or so it felt like. Then again...

“Wait.” Kaili stopped before they got too far away from her shop. “I mean, we could probably cut that shorter, but...”

“I dunno, it might be all covered in dust and stuff...”

Yeah, it was vague. Kaili hadn’t finished her particular line of thought before speaking. A classic mistake. She looked over at Allyson and then at the overgrown garage port. Vines were supposed to cover it like that. It was a choice she had made.

... Or something like that.

[member="Allyson Locke"]

Allyson nodded and groaned at the length of time it was going to take to get to this place Kaili had found. She stopped though seeing that Kai had told her to wait. She waited and let the girl mumble and continuously look towards the building or something that was covered in the jungle vines. Blinking, Allyson really wasn’t catching on to what would have dust and stuff. “Dust never hurt anything.” Looking at the building again she stepped towards it for a moment. “There something in there?” Something or someone was over there and Kaili was obviously nervous about it.

“Show me.” Allyson offered her hand, but soon took the initiative and grasped the blonde girl’s hand and led her towards the garage. Whatever it was, it was something that would cut their travel time down and Ally was always up for that. She stood in front of the building after pulling Kaili behind her as delicately as possible seeing that it was something that made her nervous.

“Whatever it is Kai, I’m sure we can handle it together...so what’s inside?” Allyson had a general idea and figured it had to do something with a ship of sorts. With hearing her story and why she stayed cooped up in the shop - it had to be something like that. It was fear and nerves that was written on the young Talith’s face and Allyson was determined to help or at least find out what was hiding under the vines. [member="Kaili Talith"]

What was buried behind the vines?

“My dreams.” Kaili sighed and withdrew her saber. “This was what I nagged my father about as a kid.”

Fingers wrapped themselves around her saber. One hand extended to keep her balance, the other to make the precision cut needed to not cause any damage to the integrity of the garage door. She flicked the switch, the blue blade sprung to life and with two swings at the side and one at the top she caused the vines to plummet to the ground. The last few stragglers were torn away by hand and not long after that Kaili let Henry down on the ground.

Two beeps were heard and not long after the garage port began to split and whine as it separated, going both up and down to expose a garage that made the previous state of the workshop seem like nothing. Kaili took the first step inside, leaving tracks in the dust for Allyson to see.

In the middle of the room was a large object covered by a huge white blanket. A hand was carefully extended to grab at the coarse fabrics. Deep breath. The second hand joined the other. Deep breath...

... SNEEZE COUGH! Relieved snivel.

Kaili tore the blanket off of the object only to reveal a speeder. It was worn, signs of repairs were evident here and there. Testaments of when Kaili tried to learn how to handle the machine properly. After the curse had been ‘lifted’ by the penchant around her neck.

An uneasy look set at Allyson. “It’s been a while. I’m not sure it even works.”

[member="Allyson Locke"]

A series of sneezes occurred as Allyson followed Kaili into the dim garage. Reaching around she searched for a light or something and pulled the cord from the ceiling. The light didn’t help much, but it was enough for her to see what was under the blanket. A wide grin spread across Allyson’s face as she saw the speeder. She had never personally owned one, her dad had a family sized one, but this was something better - sleek and fast she could just feel it. Walking up to the speeder she placed her hand on it, the machine felt alive which was a good thing.

“He’s still there.” Allyson could feel the speeder’s wanting to be free from the garage. Frowning, she sensed something was wrong. “Hmm, let me just look…” Moving about the speeder, she found the small wire compartment in the back panel. “Something is shorting out - he seems uncomfortable.” Reaching in she felt around and found the pesky wire that had its bearings showing. “I have this wire on me actually haha.” Reaching into the pack she pulled out the small spool of wire. Removing the old one she replaced it and then ran her hand again against the speeder.

“There we go, purring like a nexu.” Reaching over to the driver’s seat she patted around and make sure everything was good there and nodded. Continuing to pat her hand around, she frowned as she remembered how she would steal speeders when she was younger. Taking a deep breath she closed her eyes and focused on the speeder’s innerworkings. “Come on just trust me…” After a few long minutes, the speeder’s engine roared to life.

“I still got it! Michael seems to be happy to see you Kaili.” [member="Kaili Talith"]

Fingers traced along the smooth metal surface. Shivers went down Kaili’s spine as she thought on just how much she had wanted this when she was younger. It all felt so distant, like a dream almost. That once upon a time she too would have felt the same glee that Allyson was currently experiencing, yet all Kaili felt was fear. The same unfathomable fear that kept her in the shop. The amounts of crashes this speeder in particular had seen was remarkable, yet ‘Michael’ still held together. Kaili snickered, funny how Allyson knew the name she had given it.

“Yeah.” She seemed dejected. Much like she had been every other moment when her fears wanted to remind her of who she was or what she had done. “I’m glad to see him too.”

Kaili licked poked her tongue to lick her lips, let in a staggered breath and swallowed air for good measure. With a sharp exhale she took her seat as a passenger. She wasn’t panicking, but she was still uneasy. There was just something about knowing what was coming. The potential disaster that she could avert right now if she just turned Michael off and insisted they took a cab.

But that would be selfish.

The kid closed her eyes and nodded.

“Just go. Out of the garage, we’ll see how this goes.” She continued to keep her eyes closed and tried to stay calm. “The port is automatic, it knows Michael’s signature and will close and lock itself once he’s out of reach.”

The two droids had taken their seats in the back. Everyone was good to go. Everyone except Kaili, but that mattered little to her. She didn’t want to bring everyone down again.

[member="Allyson Locke"]

[SIZE=10pt]Digging in her bag, she pulled out a pair of goggles and strapped them to her forehead. Allyson was over joyed to be in the cockpit of something. She had been planetside for 2 days and she was freaking out about not having something to pilot. Her entire life involved starships or speeders and now she was in a pretty slick speeder. Looking behind her, the droids seemed happily tucked away with no threat of them flopping out of the speeder. The engine roared with excitement as she backed the speeder out of the garage. [/SIZE]

[SIZE=10pt]Despite not being ran for some time, the engine and everything felt in perfect order. Seeing Kailie displaying all sorts of uncomfortable, Allyson sighed softly and adjusted the controls so that she could still drive unhindered. Reaching over towards Kai, she offered her hand palm side up. Smiling towards the girl, she left the speeder hanging out near the shop as the garage door closed. “We’ll go slow, everything will be okay.” [/SIZE]

[SIZE=10pt]Allyson smiled and offered the comfort the best she could. She wouldn’t move the speeder until Kailie was as comfortable as she could get – despite the circumstances. “Just let me know when you’re ready, you’re my copilot and navigator, I need you.” @Kailie Talith[/SIZE]

Kaili grabbed the hand and squeezed it tight. She was needed in a state that wasn’t this. Silly as it had sounded, Kaili needed to take herself back to the LAA again. The small courses in navigation, the way to work your way around a gravity well and all such things. Though that was hardly applicable to the current situation. Kaili took a deep breath and sighed. With a final squeeze she set her sights on the road ahead and withdrew her datapad.

“We can just go straight to the island from here. Bearing two-fifty-three, ten kilometers.” Kaili hesitantly let her attention set on Allyson. “This trip might take a while, but...” Air swallowed. Panic to keep contained. “But, you know... No rush.”

The kid remained still like a statue. She couldn’t look down, wouldn’t think on the distance that separated the speeder and the ground. Would not think on the speed that tugged her back into her seat or the fact that it reminded her of the exact same feeling that she had felt moments before the crash. Part of her fully expected the dashboard to turn itself into a pillow at any moment. Just blast itself open and catch Kaili as she got herself re-acquainted with the fear that paralyzed her once before.

“I am terrified, if you hadn’t noticed.” Kaili said and let out an awkward chuckle as she looked at Allyson again. “I haven’t been in a piloted aircraft since...”

“... Since-...” The panic mounted. “We need to stop. We need to go back, Allyson. I can’t- We shouldn’t- No, I can’t. It’s-...”

Kaili’s breathing picked up the pace. Her eyes began to well up in terror. Words failed her and she looked to be on the brink of another breakdown.

“I can’t breathe.” Kaili choked up. “Help, Allyson.”

“No, keep going I can’t let it-”

“Go back!”

“No, don’t!”

“I-... I-...”

[member="Allyson Locke"]

The speeder was creeping along, but with the way Kaili was acting Allyson pulled it to a stop. They hadn’t made it far from the garage which was a good thing in this case. Kaili tried to hide it the best she could, but Allyson had already learned the habits of her breakdowns especially after the one at McYoda’s. Remembering how the girl was the speeder stopped and turned off. There was no need for Kaili to push herself more. Ally didn’t say anything she listened to the girl continue to ramble broken sentences. She wasn’t upset or anything of the sort, she was more worried than anything. There was history with this speeder and despite Allyson being a good pilot – Kaili wasn’t going to relax.

Closed cramped spaces. Allyson remembered and with the best effort she had, she pulled the datapad from Kaili’s hand and grabbed the smaller girl from her seat. Dragging her across the middle console as carefully as possible she placed Kaili on her lap facing her. Taking a deep breath, she smiled and wrapped her arms around the girl pulling her in tightly. A hand rested on the back of her head, caressing the blonde hair comfortingly – as comfortingly as possible. The last thing Kaili needed was another break down in the span of three days. From what she had said, was that she was getting better and Allyson didn’t want to be the cause of some sort of regression.

“It’s alright Kaili, we’re not far from the garage we can park back and take a cab. It’s alright.” Allyson continued to hug the girl until she hopefully calmed down. A part of her felt guilty knowing the background of Kaili’s fears, yet still pressuring her to get into the speeder. It wasn’t her choice; it was Kaili’s that needed to be made. Sighing softly, she held her until she didn’t want to be held anymore. [member="Kaili Talith"]
