The Terminus Facility (Ground OOC)

Nope we don't have a distance measure like that. All Heavy Armor has the same range (10 Hexes). I wish though, my Skocha's have a 4km range. Its much easier and more balanced this way though.

[member="Draco Vereen"], [member="Valiens Nantaris"]: Hmmm...I wish it was more detailed and calculated, all the distances and ranges, but I understand your point about balancing the battlefield a bit. Makes sense.
Though it's weird to think by that logic I'm in range to hit the facilities and the Light Infantry and Mechanized units North of me.

I guess I'll scout out targets and start shootin' then!

LOL, no insult to you, but I literally cannot win.

I actually drew up a movement chart for this, but previous times I’ve done it people go “stop turning this into a wargame! We don’t want rules! Let us RP!”

So I pruned it back…and yeah.

Still, I hope we can enjoy this thread as it is.

[member="Valiens Nantaris"]: lol, you'll be alright. Maybe.

In my experience, nothing works well without guidelines. But at the end of the day it's all about balance as well. That's why I only brought 4 vehicles, I think people operate with too many forces under their control and it affects combat-RP in two major ways: It prevents you from being detailed enough to give a truly clear picture, and it makes the battlefield crowded and confusing.
Not just that, either, but typical engagements like this wouldn't be fought with huge numbers of vehicles. Typically smaller numbers of artillery support larger dismounted and mounted forces.

I included an open challenge for a 4-on-4 tank battle, I'm hoping someone accepts. lol

All said and done, you did a pretty good job with this.

I'm planning on copying your style for the most part for other RP battles, but include metered Hex's for more detailed ranging and maneuvering/tactics. But solid example!

Well yes and no. Proper battles like Kashyyyk and Geonosis are sprawling epics which involve tens of thousands. They are not, however, RP battles, they are strategic engagements, and that’s what I want this to be. So the scale for this battle is ‘large’ but not massive.

As for no guidelines, I agree. But this is an RP site and there is a huge amount of resistance to the notion of having rules and guidelines in the fleeting and ground battles. So I try to take the middle route and make things happen.

I'm perfectly happy with the system the way it is. It's not like we can replicate PC gaming strategy mechanics on an RP forum. [member="Ali Hadrix"] :)

Good job [member="Valiens Nantaris"] and thanks again to [member="Draco Vereen"] for keeping us honest with the map.

I like it. I know I plan on avoiding the kark outa that marsh you've got on the west. I like the weapon range mechanics... though a general movement speed guideline would be good. I think someone ended up moving 15+ hexes in one turn early on....

I wouldn't be opposed to this as long as it wasn't a one size fits all thing which I'm sure it wouldn't be.

That may have been me zooming around early but admittedly I was having trouble reading the numbers on the map because they are very hard to see in the jungle area... kind of like your enemies.

I didn't even know there were numbers. I was doing all the counting manually and then my computer crashed and deleted everything. I was heartbroken.

[member=Tmoxin Temi]: Applying a simple range and speed conversion for the hexes would be super simple. It's how the brain typically wants to think about those things anyways. "How much distance does this represent?" Etc. Then again, dumbing it down a bit more and just referencing the number of hexes that can be viewed/ranged works just as well and is even more streamlined.
I'll have to drum up a super fantacular set of guides for using these hex maps. I could certainly craft something brilliant, useful, and unobtrusive. There's no way a well designed little system has to step on RP at all. All it ought to be used for is the end of posts anyways, when listing a briefing of movements/actions for that term, referencing their map locations.

As someone who played a bit of battletech, I'm basing everything I do on those mechanics.

Average movement speed is 5-9. 'turning' takes up a single point of movement. Terrain slows down movement. Large units move slowly. Cavalry, Light Walkers, Bikes, Mechanized Infantry, and jump infantry can move faster or ignore some terrain issues.

You know... general stuff.

Maybe your brain [member="Ali Hadrix"]!

This is you with the distance and speed calculations

Wait. Each hex is about 100 meters. That means Kiyron and his 2km effective range Mandalorian sniper rifle could, from the proper location, cover almost the entire map. Wow.
This is a fairly crowded map then.
