Ardgal Raxis
More than a Man
Location: Edge of the City Center
"Soldier down," Virgil's voice rang out over the comm as Ardgal moved through the haze of the permacrete dust. "Prometheus has been hit, I repeat, Prometheus has been hit, he's not moving."
"Hold your fire," Ardgal ordered, ducking behind a half-melted shelf of snack goods. "Homer, on my mark, move in to treat Prom."
"Good copy, sir."
Ardgal's auditory amplifiers could pick up on the sound of approaching foot steps and voices talking. He could hear them getting closer, his echolocation matrix in his helmet gave him a visual on where the approaching hostiles were. They stepped through the rubble into the building. One of them coughed on the dust in the air, "Damn, you think they lived through that?"
"Doubt it, glad to have those crapwads outta the way though," another grunted.
"Real talk, way to blow them outta the waters, bro," laughed another. "Busting those hardasses outta the water like a buncha freckin--"
Ardgal rose over the melted shelf, a single shot from his carbine cutting him off with a trio of shots. "Homer, take, take, take."
Virgil popped out from behind the crumbled counter, raising one of her pistols and firing off a pair of shots that sprayed the survivors with his blood. The three others raised their blasters, torn between shooting at the demon behind the counter and the monster in front of them. A shot bounced off Ardgal's pauldron, jerking him off target as he squeezed off a second burst. The soldier recentered, his second burst turning the assailant's skull into a charred cinders. Virgil's second round of shots blasted a quartet of holes into her victim. The sole survivor threw his weapon down, feeling as fast as he could in pure horror.
"Mine," Virgil growled, leaping over the counter.
He was fast, but he didn't stand a chance against bio-engineering. Her fist jutted out, slamming into the back of his neck as her vibrokuckle plate ejected with a sickening shlick. The young man seized for a fraction of a second as death took over and he fell limp.
"nerf herder," she growled, marching back.
"How's he looking, Homer?" Ardgal asked the medic.
"He'll live," the doctor said as he leaned over his patient. "We have some head injuries here, but nothing new. I'll stay with the kid to make sure he recovers. Press on."
"You sure?"
Virgil reached over the counter, grabbing her rifle with one hand, the other hung limply at her side. Judging by the way it was hanging, it looked dislocated.
"I can hold my own, boss, you know that," Homer said injecting a needle in the the soft spot of Prometheus' thigh.
A sickening pop came from Virgil's side of the room, followed by a string of expletives. "Let's move, Ard. We don't have time to waste."
Ardgal patted Homer on the shoulder before moving into the broken street with his cousin by his side. The pair began sprinting down the street, moving down the street at speeds that could best be described as impossible.
"Star, inbound. Virgil in tow. That security should be down any second," Ardgal reported over the comm between pants.
