Elijah had thought the Ossus had escaped the worst of the meteor shower from the combined efforts of himself and the forces on the hemisphere facing the First Order, but he was proven wrong as a massive asteroid was detected barreling straight for Med-Beq's formation. Other asteroids had breached the gates and shields to smash into several settlements on the surface, resulting in the death of tens of thousands of civilians.
By this time, the Sowa had now discovered the source of the rogue shower. The asteroids were somehow being towed and accelerated by ships interspersed within the fields. Their profiles and drive signatures matched up with models in the SJO databanks known to be fielded by the First Order, produced completely in-house by state-owned manufacturers.
Shortly thereafter, Elijah could hear Med-Beq's alert about the attackers being First Order, and Grandmaster's Kitra's distress call about the whole planet now being under attack.
"Those bastards..." he muttered under his breath as he took in the information, a shocking revelation.
(Decent) Militaries had shied away from the effective but crude tactic of the asteroid flinging because of the indiscriminate nature of the attack that usually resulted in massive collateral damage. Modern warfare was as much a contest of managing public opinion as it was about besting opponents in a strict combat sense. The hearts and minds of the public weren't won by leveling cities and slaughtering innocents.
"General Med-Beq, I'm bringing the
Bahamut in for intercept. Standby!" Elijah's stomach began turning knots as he prepared to make his orders. This wasn't going to be pleasant.
<Subutai, micro-jump us on a trajectory that will allow us to deflect the largest asteroid into the planetary shield. Then prepare to unload everything on that damn thing after we jump.>
While interdictors were active, the
Bahamut was far enough away from them to initiate a jump, and its HIMS would prevent it from being pulled into any undesired location.
<Roger, calculating jump now.>
<All groups, condition red! The rest of Roosevelt head straight for the enemy formation on a flanking route and distract them so they can't fling any more frakking asteroids. Jefferson, disperse and loop around the formation's rear. We'll wipe them with a multi vector attack.>
Roosevelt group diverted, racing right for the First Order formation at full combat speed, starfighters streaming out of hangars in advance of combat. As they approached, they began to fire upon every FO vessel along the closest flank before them.
Roosevelt was currently out of range to deal any serious damage to Imperials, but that wasn't the point. Their aim was disruption of the asteroid hauling and providing a distraction for the stealthy ships of Jefferson group to move into position for the coming strike. Jefferson group had all their stealth systems engaged, including GAMs to prevent the usual detection of stealthy vessels via mass detectors.
<Astrogation solution acquired. At your command.>
Elijah took a deep breath, staring at the readouts for what seemed like an eternity in his mind. His next words would likely send hundreds or thousands to their death, and maybe cost him the whole ship.
<...jump.>
The feeds of space and the beautiful vista of Ossus disappeared for a few moments, briefly replaced by the scene of blue tinged shafts of light of hyperspace. Ossus returned to view again as quickly as it had left, alert icons appearing all over the overlay from hundreds of impending collisions from the asteroids chucked by the First Order, and the from Elijah's own allies as he had crossed into their line of fire.
Bahamut began to fire upon the monster asteroid as it automatically intensified its starboard shielding and anti-concussion fields for the impending collision. The near face of the asteroid was wiped from the face of existence in an explosion of gamma rays as thousands of positron bolts found their mark inducing matter-antimatter annihilation upon impact. The
Deimos were by far the most effective weapons out there for the task.
A good chunk of the asteroid had been destroyed, and it had been deflected somewhat from its original course but that still wasn't nearly enough for Elijah to abort his maneuver.
"All hands, brace for impact!" Elijah called over internal comms as he gripped the arms of his command seat.
5 seconds...4 seconds...3...2..1
Bahamut crashed against the incoming asteroid along its side, firing into the asteroid all the while with guns and launchers. The middle third of its starboard side deformed inward from impact, instantly killing the thousands of crewmen and marines stationed in the affected sections. Elsewhere on the ship, people tumbled against walls and ceilings, compensator fields unable to cope with the impact of that magnitude. Elijah's seat rocked madly, and he would have been thrown off if he hadn't already been strapped down. All around him, he could hear the terrible screeches and groans of twisting metal.
It was only because of shields, composite armors, anti-concussion fields that the
Bahamut wasn't completely totaled, a testament to its awesome defensive capabilities. There was nothing out there quite like the Tenchu.
After a few moments, the ship lost its bite on the asteroid and then parted with a terrible grind, shearing away a good portion of the
Bahamut's hull. Hundreds of bodies of the living and the dead alike were sucked out into the breaches along the side of the ship until emergency bulkheads sealed shut, many shredded apart by the tons of metals and composites now flying away from the ruined battlecruiser. Following the bodies would be a swarm of
rescued pods launched from the
Bahumut, aiming to capture all survivors drifting through space.
Bahamut continued to fire at the asteroid with its remaining emplacements, which by now had been successfully deflected off course into the shield. The power of the planetary grade shielding should have been enough to vaporize whatever chunks remained to the asteroid, but who really knew. At the same time,
Bahamut took the initiative, firing volleys of
Genies and
diamond boron missiles at the smaller asteroids.
<Subutai...report.>
<The asteroid has been deflected, and I have engaged in successive strikes against the remaining ones. Large-scale breaches on starboard decks A-6 through D-7. I estimate 4,500 casualties from the collision. About 65% of all starboard emplacements and maneuvering engines have been rendered inoperable. My main gun has been knocked out of alignment and will require spot maintenance to be usable again.>
The news was crushing to an Admiral that cared deeply for those under his command, but it was a necessary sacrifice to save the millions down below on Ossus.
<Very well...continue attacks and rotate our damaged side away from the First Order formation. Get me an open channel, too. I need to say something to our fascist friends.>
<Rotating now. The line is now open.>
Elijah gritted his teeth, then began speaking with a greatly strained tone. "Attention all First Order vessels, this is Admiral King of the Silver's Seventh Fleet. I don't know what the hell crawled up all your arses and made you come up to Ossus, but for Ashla's sake stop it with the
asteroids! Do you understand what happens if any of those are allowed to impact the surface? You all like to masquerade as being decent, yet you do things like this? Why do you all cry over Kaeshana when you've probably just killed more civilians here than the GADF ever did there? You sully the memory of your compatriots with this gross display of hypocrisy."
While they were enemies for some strange reason, even after the SJO had
offered a hand peace between the two powers, he hoped that he could appeal to any shred of decency the FO commanders may have left. More than other Imperials, the First Order seemed to care about the image it projected. Thus far the FO had played the victim card fairly well against the GA after a whole host of military fiascos, but that narrative was being shattered right here at Ossus as the FO had devolved to using the tactics of the very Sith they had denounced at Panatha.
Elijah was quickly coming to the conclusion that the only good Imperial was a dead one. Whether by their own volition or through his intervention, the First Order would be made to cease all attacks.
