There is no place more sacred to the Jedi

“To Ilum we must go.”
― Yoda

Lilla had researched the caves. She suspected most Padawans had done so at some point.

The Crystal Caves of Ilum were a legendary pilgrimage site for the Jedi from the time of their discovery. Located deep within the side of Ilum’s largest mountain range, the caves stretched untold kilometres into the planet and contained a wealth of precious crystals which were vital to the construction of lightsabers.

Once upon a time there was a Temple at the mouth of the cave but nowadays, the reason for travelling was for the crystals. And maybe the experience of findig one. Once upon a time, Ilum crystals were the most common lightsaber crystals used amongst the Jedi – right until up to the Great Jedi Purge. Since then, there have been an abundance of varieties of crystals found on so many planets, that a trip to Ilum became less common.

According to the records, they were similar in structure to the Adegan crystal variants of mephite and pontite, which allegedly produced the best lightsaber blades. However, while those crystals were rare, even in the Adega system, Ilum presented to the Jedi entire caves full of high-quality crystals.

And one of the pluses of seeking a crystal here were the caves themselves, or rather the Force imbued nature of the surroundings. For, to reach them, you had to pass through visions and voices. These typically represented a Jedi’s deepest fears. And they had to be faced for the Jedi to retrieve the crystal.

And despite the millennia of trips, located within Ilum’s largest mountain range, the Crystal Caves still represented tens of thousands of kilometres of a labyrinth of winging tunnels, bottomless shafts, and narrow corridors that wended their way through the heart of the mountains and deep below the surface of the planet.

And there was no map to follow to reach the crystals – and that was seen as part of the whole process the young Jedi would endure to reach their destination. Once past the entrance, there were innumerable dead-ends and crevasses, as well as a maze of confusing, winding passageways.

The largest natural entrance to the caves was still the site of the former Jedi Temple facility.

Lilla studied the read-out all of the Padawans had received, so as to familiarise them with their destination.

The interior of the caves were made of natural shiny black stone; a volcanic rock that swallowed light instead of reflecting it. As time progressed and the Jedi Order grew, the many Jedi that visited the cave recorded their histories on its walls. A variety of Adegan crystals grew unimpeded in the walls, floors, and ceilings of the tunnels, and could easily be removed by hand or with hand-held excavation equipment. In some areas the crystals were so common they littered the floor.

The caves themselves were a powerful nexus of Force energy, creating a vergence within the Force itself. Due to the potency of the Force within the close confines of the caves, the place had a disorienting effect that was high distressing to most who entered into the depths. Many who entered suffered from vivid hallucinations, and the occasional Jedi had been lost forever in the darkness.

Another effect that the caves often created in the minds of the young Jedi searching for their first lightsaber crystal masked the presence of most of the crystals. Padawans would journey through the tunnels following the Force to the crystal that called to them, and only that one was visible to their eyes.

As they exited hyperspace, Lilla sat in the back of the shuttle and finished the briefing. Ilum was a frozen world – in fact 90% of it was covered in ice. And and could typically be expected to have gown rare kyber, kathracite, mephite, and pontite crystals.

Historically, the Ilum were limited to blue and green in colour. But more recent reports suggest a wide range of hues were available, but in much fewer numbers.

Lilla closed the file and glanced around at the assembled Padawans. It was apparently once qwuite common for this type of mission to take place. It was known as ‘The Gathering’ and was typically supervised by at least one senior Jedi. On this occasion, Lilla’s own Master – a Cerean known as Mei – was accompanying them.

Less of a supervisor and more of a chaperone he’d insisted.

The shuttle skimmed low over a glacial lake dotted with icebergs.

“I will land on the edge of the lake,” the pilot informed them over the intercom. “From there you can hike up the mountain.”

“It’s not far, but it’s straight up,” he continued, as the craft came to a stop. “Just watch out for gorgodons. You don’t want to provoke them.”

“Gorgodons?” Lilla mouthed.

“Watch out for their tails,” Mei replied. “And their teeth. And their saliva. And their arms.”

An orphan now, Veera was beholden to serve no lofty orders or lords. No god, no masters. She was just the girl from nowhere. The girl with raw powers that were as of yet untrained in any substantial way.

She'd been drawn here though and agreed after meeting Lilla to join in the trip. After all it wasn't everyday a young girl got to experience Jedi History.

Her own lightsaber was in essence not her own. She'd jacked it from a collector. It was large, too big for her palms, weighted wrong and with a blue crystal. All the reading she'd done on the Holonet had all indicated she needed to build her own saber.

She hummed and then twisted the hilt, unlocking the latches with a bit of force. Tiny fingers reached in and fumbled around, then withdrew the crystal holder. She tossed them out into the snow and shrugged, then deft as a hawk reassembled the weapon.

She was a Salvager. She could do that.

Then she leaned forwards, covered in a dull grey cloak and tunic.

Lillian was there in the cockpit.

"Lilla? Are we close to landing yet?"

The girl felt out of place. She was new to the order but not to the idea she had the force. There was little experience she had with it and sought out to learn. One thing lead to another and some how she was ushered onto a ship for some grand adventure. Ciel didn't understand it, she had a saber, not that it worked very well. It was old and past its time. Maybe Building one of her own could be a good thing. A lightsaber she could actually call her own and not a relic of her family past. There was light chatter amongst the others not that she was involved in any.

Ciel was close to twenty almost an adult amongst most cultures, while the others, the others seemed younger but that wasn't her reason for not speaking much. No, it was because she didn't know anyone, not really. It didn't help that she wasn't good at communicating. Ciel stood up as she heard the kid ask the girl known as Lillian how long it would be till they could depart. The girl walked behind her and places a warm hand on the little girls shoulder. "Not much longer now, just be patient and we will be there in no time. Besides I heard this place is cold so would be best to savoir the warmth now while we have it." She said with a smile hoping that would ease the kid as she looked though the cockpit to see the ice world just in front of them. "I'm going to change into the thermals." Ciel moved away from the cockpit to get ready.

Lilla was brought back into the fold by a voice. She'd spent a lot of time with her Master, maybe too much time? Not that she minded his tutelage and sage advice - but she knew she had to spread her wings, and the Padawans around her seemed to be the logical next step in her development.

So Lilla stood and moved around the seating area, to put space between herself and her Master.

Sitting next to [member="Veera"], she smiled. "Close, very close. I suspect we'll be on the ground within minutes. And as someone that grew up on a desert planet, I'll be interested in finding out what it's like to be on a place covered with snow. Have you visited an ice planet before? Because I think [member="Ciel Bridger"] has the right idea. Thermal clothing might be the way to go."

Tana was a little unsure of the reasons to come on this trip, for the most part the whole extrusion was conducted by the Republic Remanent and their Jedi Order, and from what was common knowledge the Silver Jedi and the Republics where more just acquaintances then actual allies. On another note the Padawan had already acquired a saber crystal and constructed a personal blade. In contrast Illum was a very historical planet for all Jedi, regardless of where they came from, and participating in such a trip was like a tick on the Jedi bucket list, also being a user of Ja'kai getting another crystal and forging another blade was a thought that crossed Tana's mind.

Sitting in the hallway the voices of the other Padawan echoed throughout the ship, the talk of thermals earning a small smile, "did not know place would be cold? should be common knowledge I think". The Riben-Jin Jedi already wearing the custom made robes that had weather resistant materials integrated into it's fabric,said clothing already being used once for a winter operation on a Hoth like planet. For it would be a small waiting game, just killing time until the ship touched down at the designated landing zone.

[member="Lilla Syrin"] - [member="Ciel Bridger"] - [member="Veera"]

Going to Ilum alongside other padawans, from other factions, such as [member="Lilla Syrin"], [member="Ciel Bridger"], [member="Veera"], and possibly others, made her feel different, especially since the past few years were spent on hot planets (the Howling Crags controlled a tropical region on Dathomir) and only flying in space could possibly come close. But this time around she would also be wearing a thermal suit, and a backpack containing all the supplies she would feel are necessary on a hike, so as to ensure that she wouldn't be missing anything critical to her survival on the journey. Crackers, thermal conservator containing stim-caf native to Trandosha, protein bars, and also stood ready to learn what she could about the Force any way she can. And, of course, the lightsaber components. Of course, she would not expect non-Silvers to recognize her, much less know about the hotel she was running on Trandosha. I'm not here to advertise the Crown Nebula Hotel, I'm here to build my lightsaber, she thought, while realizing that her titular master gave her a lot of operational freedom beyond learning the basics.

"Varindar Asyt here"

This promised to be a new experience to the sole droid in the group. Perhaps he was seen as odd, for in and of himself he had no Force capabilities. He could not control or feel the Force. It was only through his ally built into the suit he wore that he was, by proxy, a Force-sensitive. Ultimatum was in his suit at the moment, mentally connected with the Shard, Upari, and thus he was able to in a small way sense the Force around him. He had not yet trained in the Force, though it was not actually the droid that needed it as much as the Shard within. For them the Force was uncontrollable. They felt it, they could see it, but they could not utilize it. Perhaps other Padawans could sense that in them, the lack of experience, though Ultimatum was unsure if they had any better knowledge of the Force than he did.

The planet outside promised to be cold; they had studied enough about Ilum to know that. They wondered how long the body could last in the harsh weather. Certainly no longer than the battery life, which limited them far more than most other persons. They could not rely on hunting for food and melting ice for a drink in order to survive. It was a robotic limitation that their power source was solely of electrical origin. Of course, they had some advantages. Some strength and durability over most people, though it was unlikely to help in the situation ahead.

This was to be the first actual expedition into the Force for them. Ultimatum hoped to learn more about the Jedi as well as potentially locate a crystal. The idea of constructing a lightsaber was most appealing, if not for its own use as much as studying it for developmental purposes. But his main hope was to find out more about the philosophies of the Order. Perhaps they would join one of the Force orders, but maybe they would not. It was an uncertainty, and they hoped to figure it out before long.

The droid sat towards the middle of the ship. While in his suit he stood taller than most of the people around him, a pleasant change for his smaller body would probably have been shorter than all of them. For most of the trip, the droid had remained silent, conversing with Upari in thought. It was a new experience, and one the both of them were acclimating to. A collective mind, two being one, yet still distinct. Perhaps it sounded like a contradiction, but reality sometimes appeared that way. He decided that since the ship was preparing to land, he would begin to speak with the others.

Looking up towards the cockpit of the craft, the robotic voice resonated clearly, "What is the likelihood of meeting aggressive local fauna near our landing zone?" For some reason, he had a nagging fear, very peculiar for him, of landing in open combat. He did not recall much of his previous existence, but maybe he had taken part in a wartime landing. Whatever it was, he wondered if it would actually effect his ability to continue or if it were just a minor inconveniance.

Lilla looked around. The imminent landing appeared to have made people more sociable and restless it seemed. She smiled at [member="Tanaski Yumi"]. "Having never experienced cold, I suspect this is going to be something of a culture shock to me, so I'm glad I came prepared."

She also smiled at [member="Varindar Asyt"] - someone she knew by name from the manifest, but had never met formally. "Hi," she offered before her eyes alighted on [member="Ultimatum"]. She'd read about a droid once that could connect to the Force, but she suspected - and up to a point sensed - this was different. "There is a 100% chance that I'll do my best to avoid aggressive life forms. But that's the thing with wild animals. They're...well...they're wild."

[member="Veera"] [member="Ciel Bridger"]

She glanced around the passenger area.

Robot, weird lady, and another weird lady. Too many weird ladies, but the touch from Ciel was unexpected. she glanced over and nodded.

"I'm not totally lost ya know. Did survive on the streets of Nar Shaadda for a while."

She rummaged in her bag and pulled out a set of thermals, then wound her grey cloak over the bunch. Last she completed her load-out with a standard Jedi Utility belt, attaching a small Mer-Sonn blaster to it. It'd been her bread and butter since before she found or Stole, her light-saber.

While someone else's light-saber. But hers soon to be.

The ship touched down in a few minutes, and she nodded.

"So now we venture into the caves eh?"

And after [member="Ultimatum"] mentioned wild animals, Varindar was grateful for bringing in her 10mm ripper, with one ammunition drum already loaded and the other drum in her backpack, and also she smiled when seeing [member="Tanaski Yumi"] once again. Especially after the stay at the hotel. Sure, it has been a while since Varindar last saw him, just that, in the meantime, she did her best to avoid mentioning her meal at the restaurant with one Zavii, and yet she appeared in rumors about a possible love triangle between the three of them. [member="Lilla Syrin"] and [member="Veera"] were very close together, and upon mentioning that they were about to venture into the caves, and that they had to watch out for... gorgodons? From the moment she stepped out of the ship, she remained close to the other padawans, including [member="Ciel Bridger"]. In the cold environment of Ilum, she couldn't help but talk about the hotel she ran, in a rather low voice so as to not to startle the gorgodons. But only Tanaski would know what staying in there actually means. I guess, Trandosha is not very popular in the first place, so there are not many no-shows; I'd be unlucky to get one on most nights, she thought, while realizing that more popular destinations tend to get more no-shows on the room side, but no-shows on the restaurant side seem to depend less on the location.

"If any of you wishes to go to Trandosha afterward, I can't exactly blame you; if you did go to Trandosha, on the other hand, you may want to stay at the Crown Nebula Hotel for a night, provided there are any vacancies; otherwise, you may still want to eat at its restaurant"

"Used to cold I am, other temperatures too, though I have been told warm inside cave compared to outside", thought that could have have been just a rumor, but anything to make [member="Lilla Syrin"] feel a little more comfortable. Did not want the crystal hunt to be more focused on staying warm that passing the trial or test one had to endure while attaining the force sensitive rock. Though that did raise a odd question, why was [member="Ultimatum"] here? mother had told Tana about the droid, but that only just confused the Padawan even more, the being was a confederacy droids, that was coming on a trip usually reserved for Jedi. In addition could the droid even find a crystal? not only did droid foundries try to make their droids impervious to the force and illusions, but would a droid even be able to locate a crystal? pass a trial to earn it let along sense the force.

If droid became fore sensitive, well that would make the confederacy very powerful, but if such was a case force sensitive droid would have taken over the galaxy, probably due to force powers that could crush droids at a mere thought, questions for later. Making sure that the all equipment was ready the Riben-Jin Jedi took place next to [member="Varindar Asyt"], returning a smile to the hotel owner as they slowly disembarked from the ship, a small chilling wind poking the face, but nothing over the top. "If we stay at the crown nebula hotel after this perhaps can put suite room to use, many beds go un-use for just two", may also make some publicity for the hotel, perhaps more Republic Remanent members would use it when visiting the Silver Jedi.

[member="Veera"] - [member="Ciel Bridger"]

That was likely the best they could expect; animals were beyond their scope of psychological prediction. Perhaps that was something to study at a later date. Upari reminded Ultimatum, and they replied, "Appreciated."

As the ship opened for the personnel to leave, Ultimatum felt the excitement of Upari within himself. There was a part of him that was interested in learning more about the Force, but there was also the physical aspects of the world that intrigued Ultimatum. These crystals grew in an area steeped in the Force; it brought questions as to how this came about. Upari countered that the query relied on an understanding of the Force, an understanding they did not possess. Therefore the inquiry should be focused on the Force at the moment rather than its history.

The offer of Trandosha, while interesting, was one that would need to be postponed until after the expedition. They believed it would be a poor decision to make before a potentially lethal adventure.

Stepping out into the cold Ultimatum let his thermometer stabilize. As expected it was freezing. Unfortunately, he could not be entirely sure about the temperature, given that his method of measurement relied on a tool that could be affected by the heat generated in his body. Being new to this place and the mentality, they asked, to anybody who may be able to answer, "Apologies if this sounds foolish. How do we proceed? Directly to the caves or is there anything that must be done beforehand?"

"What is a crown nebula?" She asked.

Then she kept going, small feet moving her past the woman and to the droid, whom she sized up with a quick glance, wondering what his scrap metal value was. She calculated she could disassemble him in less than fifteen standard mikes.

"Well tin can, not really. You go, follow the force. And then when you get deep enough the caves test you. You pass and well.....well I just read about it so whatever."

She slipped past the droid and into the snowy winds of Illum. At the mouth of the caves she paused and looked back, drawing her cloak closer over her thermals. Somehow her body felt warmer now, and she used the force subconsciously to regulate her heat.

"You guys coming?"

Lilla Syrin

Lilla smiled as they began to disembark. She was still not versed in social etiquette or small talk, but she could tell there was already friendly banter and that could only be a good thing.

The smile lasted only a fraction of a second before the icy cold ripped it from her face. "So..." she said, doing her best to stop her teeth from chattering. "That's what cold feels like."

Her body was warm, but it mattered little. Her face was exposed to the wind and the horizontal snow being whipped off the surface of the lake and directly into her eyes. A paranoid Jedi would say the Force was doing this on purpose.

Then, to no-one in particular, she pointed to a spot halfway up the hill that faced them. "Up there. We need to get to that opening up there. Then we can get into the caves. And then we can follow the Force. It is said it will lead us to the crystal that is most attuned to us. Almost as if the crystal chooses us and not the other way around."

She hoped that climbing would mean the wind would subside, given her face would be inches from the side of the hill. It was, she suspected, a forlorn hope.

[member="Veera"] [member="Ultimatum"] [member="Tanaski Yumi"] [member="Varindar Asyt"] [member="Ciel Bridger"]

Upari agreed with the young woman who answered. "This is not an exercise in physical prowess, but in our connection to the Force."

There was no response Ultimatum could invent at that moment, and so he nodded with a perfunctory, "Thank you." Turning his focus to the one in charge, she had just indicated a cavern entrance, and Ultimatum quickly began to move towards it. An issue became quite evident as the droid stepped into the thicker snow, his heavy frame sank further than those of his current compatriots. "Perhaps there will be solid ground in the cave system itself," He spoke quietly to himself.

"If there is not, then it shall simply be an additional hardship to overcome." That it would be a hardship Ultimatum agreed wholeheartedly, the question of overcoming for the sake of this expedition he was less sure about.

He decided to reiterate what had been explained to them, just to be certain that they understood what the plan was. With each step, perhaps comical in appearance with the lopsided gait he had started for the snowy walk, he spoke to the rest again, "To recapitulate, the tactic involved is as follows: The group reaches the cave, the group them may disperse as each person follows the Force, and hopefully will eventually find a crystal that is most in tune with them. The team will then re-coalesce at the entrance. Is this accurate?"

Upari replied in thought, "That sounds about right, but we'll see. We're both new to this. It would seem the others know more than us."

"Of course they do, many of these appear to be more experience Force users than us."

"That is not saying much."

[member="Lilla Syrin"][member="Veera"] [member="Tanaski Yumi"] [member="Varindar Asyt"] [member="Ciel Bridger"]

"The Crown Nebula is the hotel I run on Trandosha" Varindar answered [member="Veera"], while trembling under the cold wind. "Probably best to rent an executive suite for all of us to stay in then"

After she reluctantly answered Veera's question would she even think of climbing the hill, which was, well, different from going into this blizzard on level ground (as level as ground could be when there is snow everywhere), with [member="Lilla Syrin"] and [member="Ultimatum"] moving in before Veera started to do so. Much less [member="Tanaski Yumi"] or [member="Ciel Bridger"]. Then again, if what she heard about what would be happening once at the cave is correct, she will have to follow a specific trail in the Force, leading to a specific crystal. Then why couldn't I get a crystal on Ruusan? she thought, while reflecting on the reason as to why the attempt on Ruusan ended in a failure, as she climbed her way to the cave, at first not using the Force to aid her body in climbing, and also realizing that perhaps there was good reason not to land closer to the entrance to the caves: the area where one could safely land a ship on at that place was too small. But once she made it to the cave entrance, she starts wondering about the possible directions she could be pulled into, especially since she could feel that there was more than one path leading to a lightsaber crystal.

The cold felt like, well the cold what else, but in addition to the chilling atmosphere their was a strong pull on the force towards the mountain, one that seemed to abate the cold a little. Wandering through the snow a little Tana's gaze turned up to the small opening [member="Lilla Syrin"] indicated to, a definite strong point in the nexus that enveloped the planets surface, "I guess a small amount of rock climbing is in order".

Taking a few steps forwards the pale skinned Jedi followed behind the others, but could not help turn an eye to [member="Ultimatum"], the droids presance just becoming stranger and stranger, it would be interesting to see how the 'tin can' man, as [member="Veera"] dealt with the cave. 'I wonder what trial he face, what problems to over come, or lessons to be learned, interesting very much'.

Continuing on the small trek [member="Varindar Asyt"] voiced a small response to Tana's comment on renting out a suite at the hotel along with answering Veera's previous question on what the Crown Nebula was. "What ever work best... But now tally ho my good friend to the cave we must go, haya"

Lilla Syrin

Lilla pressed on. The group was spread out now, with some forging ahead and others straggling behind. But there was no clear and imminent danger, so the young Padawan moved towards the front of the line and noted her master brought up the rear.

She reached the sheer face of the cliff soon enough and began to climb. Climbing was something she was adept at - she'd had years of training back on Tatooine. Compared to the smooth walls she'd practiced on, this presented little challenge - albeit the cold was a small disadvantage.

As she climbed, and noted others were less sure, she called down. "Follow my lead." She fished a small canister from a pocket and marked each foot and hand holders she went along. The dye would fade in under an hour, with no harmful side effects for the rock, but for those following, it ought to be a boon.

Soon she was on a small plateau, at the mouth of the cave, and despite a desire to rush in, she held back, waiting to enter with at least one or two others.

[member="Tanaski Yumi"] [member="Varindar Asyt"] [member="Ultimatum"] [member="Veera"] [member="Ciel Bridger"]

The answer appeared to be correct, and thus Ultimatum began to follow the others up the rough terrain. The cliff was a challenge for the droid, whose larger frame required more pronounced grip points to handle the weight. Ultimatum hoped that those beneath him were patient with his cautious clambering. Occasionally he had to search for a different hand or foothold than the one indicated, just to ensure that there was one capable of holding under the exertion. Aside from that, it was not particularly tricky. The physicality of the work was simple enough to handle, and very little of his processing power was required. His brain could coordinate with Upari with the hope of better connecting to the two minds.

As he finished the climb and pulled himself from the ground, Ultimatum stood near to [member="Lilla Syrin"]he gazed into the cavern. He could feel the influence drawing him to enter, and while he wished to acquiesce, Upari felt compelled to go, the robot knew it was better to wait for a group rather than rush in alone. He then had a momentary thought that led him to ask, "How long can we expect to be in there? Will we search for someone who has been gone too long?"

[member="Tanaski Yumi"] [member="Varindar Asyt"] [member="Veera"] [member="Ciel Bridger"]

Now that Varindar was at the top of the cliff, and on the same plateau [member="Lilla Syrin"] was on, she knew what was left for her to do: following the trail of a crystal in the Force, into the caves, and then [member="Tanaski Yumi"], and finally [member="Ultimatum"] made it, with [member="Veera"] and [member="Ciel Bridger"] still climbing the cliff. Yet she was psychometrically overwhelmed by the sheer number of Force-signatures that walked through those caves, and also their collective knowledge; because it's so dark in there, she fetched one of those branches, calling upon whatever knowledge she could fetch through psychometry, started using the Force to induce friction on the top part of the branch, and, sure enough, the branch began to light up under repeated Force-induced friction. But it took a while for her to do so; once that she had a makeshift torch at her disposal, she could see a lot more clearly in these caves, and, of course, the light reflected by the different crystalline facets being precious guides along the way, feeling that she was, in fact, closing in on the crystal that may as well become the one fitted into her lightsaber down the road.
