The Union Jack: To most Irish that is a symbol of oppression, slavery, and potential Genocide. I have friends on this site and in RL that are English and have no hatred in my heart for them or what their ancestors did. However most Irish do. From 1110 to 1920, Ireland was oppressed by the English and Irish Protestants. Catholic (and Irish Pagans) homes/farms/businesses were ripped away from them and granted to English and Irish Prots. Slavery, the total loss of Irish life is in the millions. Slavery was also not just about forced labour but forced military enlistment. Irish that were forced conscripted got lesser equipment (sometimes weapons such as guns didn't even work) and were rarely trained. Cannon fodder. Genocide....one name....Oliver Cromwell. The Lord Protector proclaimed...."The Irish are no different than cattle grazing in the fields....slaughtering them like cattle is the proper direction to take."
Off topic, but I do think ties into it

What darth vendefica said is mostly true, about our nations history. Yes we oppressed people and did other nasty things, but then again how else do you conquer quarter of the globe. Though some of people listed were also consider oppressors here such as the Normans, and to some extent Oliver Cromwell. After all after his death, he was hung drawn and quartered. Though that said the British did not lot of nasty things, hence we had pop of a few million and conquered quarter the planet.

Though we do have things to be proud of in our history as well
We stopped Hindu from burning widows on the dead husbands funeral fire
We stopped international slavery (yes we where part of it, but we also stopped the shipping of slaves) in 1807 america 1865
We had strength to stand up to Hitler, and stall him. As well as many other possible dictators and tyrants.
In the end we gave all up peacefully
Apart from Ireland, but that story is still on going

So yes my flag has blood on it, but also has been force of good

Can you who support the Confederate flag say the same.
If not let it die
If you can promote that, and show that this is what it should mean. Do it and prove it.
I personally no real view on it, as I am not a southerner, I am not even american.
To me its not even a thing
Though [member="Darth Venefica"] gave me food for thought, and I thank her for it.

Wow, where did you learn those killer debate skills? Name-calling and googling memes. Impressive.
Not wanting to start a war or anything, but as we got to talking about debating skills, I thought I'd point out the following is not a respectful thing in a debate either.

I have to be honest here, this thread (and the whole debate in general) actually disgusts me.

You're disgusting people.
EDIT: Well, unless American debate allows dishonouring your opponent and calling them disgusting.

Didn't bother reading the thread. Didnt bother watching the news either. I'm more concerned with things like global warming or world hunger or something actually tangible rather than what a flag does or doesn't stand for who can and can't show it.

There's more important things than dyed fabric hanging on a pole.

I'm not gonna lie. I normally have a nice comeback for that type of response. Unfortunately, I got nothin'. Nada. Was totally not expecting that one. I'm gonna go back to the roleplay sections now. My foray into the water cooler has brought me nothing but confusion, head scratching, and discomfort. Reminds me of when I first found 4chan.
