Are Both Jedi and Sith Evil?

I couldn't agree more with everything everyone said. Though I have always been more sentimental for Sith then Jedi and I find both sides are selfish in their own ways.

So great points however I still think both sides aren't "good". If anything they are both neutral and the people within them fall under a certain alignment within the scale.
While I agree on the nature of the force that they use being neutral, the Sith as a group are evil by nature and by choosing. It isn't just the selfish nature, it's what they do, how they act, why they do what they do.

Doing good things with bad intentions does not make you neutral, that is literally the most pure form of evil there is. Once you corrupt others into believing you are good, you have become the most heinous of evils and have won the fight.

I agree dearie, were all evil and magic always comes with a price, or in this case fore powers always come with a price.....I'll let that sink in for a moment.

Where the Truth Lies
I'm not entirely sure why this discussion is getting so much hate. It's not a stupid question. It's totally valid.

Yes, in the films (especially the OT), Sith are most definitely portrayed as faces of pure evil. It's very cowboys/Indians in that sense.

But, I go back to what I said in the spectrum discussion. People do not do what they do because evil is cool. If they do, it's my opinion that you're dealing with a pretty cardboard character. If the Sith simply wanted to destroy the galaxy and nothing else, they would have done it. They haven't because it's pointless. What benefit do they derive from this?

Politically, we look at the horrors of the various Sith empires and it's easy to say that they're wicked beyond imagination. What they tried to assemble was something that operates like a totalitarian society with the idea that people, in general, are not capable of controlling themselves or having stability; they must depend of a group of enlightened individuals like the Sith to maintain order.

And historically, there's evidence to suggest that. The Republic, with all it's stability and democracy, fractured and led to the Clone Wars - one of the bloodiest conflicts in history. Yes, this was engineered by Sidious, but the point was that the system could fail.

Look at how easily the Yuuzhan Vong cut through the New Republic. You can't help but think that the militaristic Galactic Empire wouldn't have fallen so easily.

I might be getting off track. My point is that while the actions of the Sith might be portrayed as evil, you have to consider that most of these stories are told from the point of view of Jedi - the natural ideological enemy. Of course they'll seem evil. But, to think that they're only doing what they're doing out of wanton disregard for everything is pretty foolish.

Morality isn't black and white. Evil is a perspective.

I like to think that I'm a perspectivist as far as morality is concerned in our world.

But when you're a creed that constantly seeks to build totalitarian empires based upon conquest, slavery and exploitation with tactics that routinely involve torture, genocide and the disregard for any value that life might hold, you're kind of an nerf herder. You're just as much an nerf herder if you infiltrate an existing institution that holds up ideals based upon the dignity of sentients, with the full intent and design of corrupting it and turning it into a militaristic warmongering state that crushes opposition and tosses respect for sentient value into the garbage in order to cultivate your own personal power.

Now in our world if you're devoid of human empathy and decency you might shrug your shoulders and claim a means to an end. Fine. But in a world where a supernatural connection between all living things not only exists, but has a "dark side" that feeds off the misery and hatred of others and is a corrupting influence that twists the minds of those it seduces, you're an evil person, regardless of how moralistically relative you try to weasel your way out of not having to feel a responsible for your actions.

Because despite being a fictional topic inside an inconsistent genre? Many writers choose to align their real-world views and real-world passions with the subject matter. It's perfectly understandable really. No different from the stirred passions of religion and politics. You get used to it. Many people come to this discussion to talk and persuade. Very few ever come to listen.
