Five-Star Learning

Varindar might have an idea of what makes a good guest experience, but she was still pretty raw as a hotel manager, managing an equally raw staff. I get that promoting internally usually makes changes in management less of a hassle, but one would think most Jedi that might have wanted to run the Crown Nebula would be more interested in using the hotel for catching criminals over actually running the hotel, she thought. With the funds seized from the Ta'jar Blood Gang on Trandosha, she was able to pay out salary arrears to the hotel's past and present employees, as well as repairs to all the rooms. Said Bloog Gang was wary of attempting to continue especially since the new management eased up the cancellation policy, whereby only the first night would be charged if somebody cancels within three days of the check-in date on the reservation, and is refunded in full before the three-day deadline occurs. Much better faith and much more flexibility in those areas. And, of course, regular cleaning of sheets and linens after guests leave, and every three nights for longer stays unless the guests ask otherwise.

With the Crown Nebula Hotel coming under new management, Silver Jedi members enjoy rooms and meals at a discount at the only luxury hotel on Trandosha. More surprising is that the Crown Nebula hotel is perhaps the only luxury hotel in the galaxy that is directly run by a Jedi. That said, even if you don't wish to book a room, or to book a table at the restaurant, I still need some Force-training; my knowledge of the Force is rather rudimentary. You understand, perhaps, that my employment contract with the Silver Jedi calls for continuing education, in part in the Force and in part in other topics that may be relevant to running a hotel; however, due to conflicts of interest, the Jedi responsible for closing the transaction cannot take me on as a padawan. If you're interested in taking me on as a padawan, I'm open to that. In that case you shall be given a loyalty card for the hotel.

Varindar Asyt
General Manager, Crown Nebula Hotel

Morse was reading the note itself as she looked at it. The holocron on her belt almsot reacting to her eyes as she tried to figure out about it. "What the..." She was one for training but education contract with the silver jedi... this wasn't some college course you did for credit during military service to have credit. She was trying to figure out the rest and brought a hand up to touch her hair. The skylar robes she was wearing darker with the inth metal protective sections. "I am so confused.... but if she needs a master maybe I'll be able to get through to her." She was wondering and moving with the force itself as she spoke mostly to the ghosts of her family. When she was thumbing the holocron it always felt like they were right there with her. Watching, waiting to offer advice or something before the jedi set the course into the ship. She looked at the pass and slid it into her field kit on her hip before touching her saber. "Alright, lets go Ulic and see what we might be able to do with this one." Cynna had been busy and unable to do a great deal until she allowed the ship to come in orbit towards the planet. Using one of the orbital insertion pod to get down to the planet when she allowed the force to guide her movement in.

It was not, per se, a training contract, just a provision in her work contract as the general manager of the Crown Nebula hotel; the contract gave some guidelines for the content but still allowed some level of freedom. And then, the planetary insertion pod was seen in Trandosha's sky, with most Trandoshan residents in the neighborhood being oblivious to its fall, as were the guests. What a way for a Jedi Master to make its entrance! Assuming, of course, it's not coming from some ship that had to be abandoned for some reason, she thought, while the pod made its landing in the hotel's parking lot, hoping that the occupants made it out alive, and also that they would not need medical attention even if they did survive. Her wishlist of Force-training was about what would be useful for her to have around when working at the hotel so that she can cater to emergencies with guests or other situations where a problem arises at the hotel. Now, she was serving another set of guests before her prospective master arrived at the hotel's front desk, hoping that the guests can be dealt with before [member="Morse Sunrider"] actually shows up at the front desk.

"Welcome to the Crown Nebula hotel. What can I do for you today?"

"We have a reservation for six nights, in accordance to the hunting preserve vacation package, for a room with two double beds. The reservation was made under the name of Utkarsh Pandit" Utkarsh showed Varindar his passport.

"Your reservation is in order. All right, Utkarsh, your room is going to be the Latrobe Suite" she announces Utkarsh while handing him the keys to the Latrobe Suite.

[member="Varindar Asyt"]

Morse looked at the readings from within the pod as she opened it with a small push. Reaching out with the force energies before she rolled her shoulders. The hilt of her saber on her hip while she was walking with her eyes flicking back and forth. Morse strode towards the hotel though as she was wondering what this was going to be like before she opened the doors and stayed there. "What is this place." She said it less as a question, she could see what it was but she was old, her family line going back deep into the jedi order. Males and females both with the Sunrider name that dedicated themselves to upholding the ideals when her hand went against and touched the soldi side fo the holocron.

As the set of guests checking in were given their keys to the Latrobe Suite, she accompanied them to the aforementionned suite, with their baggage on a cart. They will discover, upon arriving to the Latrobe Suite, that the welcome package includes a bag of ground caf, a bag of popcorn, a set of stationery, as well as a set of bath products that they are allowed to take out of the room at check-out. While, of course, the publicity obtained by the arrest of the last owners on slavery, drug trafficking and moneylaundering charges was enough to attract a few guests on the short run, to sustain that on the long run, she had to capitalize on the nearby attractions and offer packages based on those. Now, I may be wondering what will Morse ask for: a room, a restaurant table, or something else that may or may not bring in any revenue, she thought, hoping that the receptionist on duty will be able to take care of all the guests while she was doing her Force-training. Hopefully she had a loyalty card ready for Morse, especially if Morse clicked with her as a master, in which case she will be able to use the card at any time she goes to the Crown Nebula for any reason whatsoever. Now that Morse asked where she was...

"Welcome to the Crown Nebula hotel, what can I do for you today?" she asked [member="Morse Sunrider"], upon Morse's arrival at the front desk.

[member="Varindar Asyt"]

Morse was looking at the womana nd her face remained blank. "I am here searching for Padawan Varindar, this distraction of hers is in conflict with her duties." She stood there before motioning with her hand. "You will get her for me." She didn't really use the force just spoke sternky and turned to lok at what there was. She was uncertain about all of the activity that was going on here and she wasn't certain what was happening. THis was whag her families legacy had become, the jedi order running a business that catered to what.... people looking for a thrill? She was reaching out with the force and maintained a sour expression while crossing her arms.

"I am the Padawan Varindar you seek. Do you wish to book a room, the hotel's conference room, a table at the restaurant or some other facility for our training? Or you would rather train me off-site?"

If Morse was the kind of master to look down upon my role as general manager of the hotel, perhaps that might explain why I was placed in this hotel; however, from what I heard back on Dathomir, the sort of Jedi master to look down on a duty like this one is usually the kind of passive master to mostly meditate and act in limited capacities otherwise, she thought. Rumors were that the big business of the SJO, the Silver Engineering Corporation, was also run by Jedi, the same as this hotel. Making sure there would be a receptionist to cover for her while she was off training with [member="Morse Sunrider"], Varindar was now off the hotel's front desk, while knowing that, if the hotel's conference room or a room was going to be booked, the receptionist on duty would have to deal with it, and not enter bookings herself. If, on the other hand, she was going to train outside the hotel proper, the Vratix receptionist now on duty won't have anything to do with the rooms. So she wonders where to go from there, and what she will learn from Morse tonight. But the distraction from duties was a thorny issue, because of its subjectivity, or how she perceives it anyway.

"Distraction from duties? There are so many different interpretations of the Jedi scopes of duty that I am not sure where to begin"

[member="Varindar Asyt"]

She raised an eyebrow at her. "What, get your training saber, get your robe and get outside." She said it while walking. "Move it now padawan." She continued to look at the things here and went out, removing her glove as she touched the ground and closed her eyes. Whispering the words to herself when she was going with the jedi code to focus herself before she was running a thumb on the holocron at her belt while the gatekeeper appeared. "THat was fast, welcome back Morse." She stood straight while looking around. "THis padawan runs a hotel.... ancestor." She said it when she was looking it over and cleared an area with the force so the two of them could stand there. "Well then find a way to understand them Morse. We fought and died for a thousand years for the jedi to have chances like this... somewhat."

Oh well, Morse didn't take the bait, then again, a five-star hotel is not for everyone, not even at the current prices which, while lower than the prices under the Ta'jar, are still rather steep, she thought, while she was opening her padawan's starter kit containing a robe and a practice lightsaber that she obtained as a signing bonus to run the Crown Nebula on behalf of the SJO. So [member="Morse Sunrider"] wanted to introduce lightsaber lessons at some point? No biggie. Now that she was out of the hotel and into the hotel's parking lot, she was now off-duty as far as the hotel is concerned; however, if that was a lesson she had to take to ensure that she will be able to run the hotel once knighted, so be it. Varindar just had so much to learn about the Force, and so much more to learn that may be related to her Jedi duties but that wasn't specifically about the Force. She now stood at attention and awaited further instructions before she could do so much as get her Force-lessons started. Her wishlist of Force-knowledge was rather long and she knew it, plus she had no illusions that she would be able to cover it all at once.

"I'm ready, master. However, I'd rather learn telekinesis before even thinking about using a lightsaber"

[member="Varindar Asyt"]

Morse kept her eyes on the girl when she came out and was still talking. "That is nice, your job is to learn padawan. You don't have any training to understand skills in the force that are advanced." She crossed her arms over her chest though while she was looking at some of the things here, where she might be able to train her. Morse radiated calmness and her own poise as she spoke. "A jedi needs to have the most dedication, the commitment to helping others and not just yourself. It is a tradition that has lasted for thousands of years, since before the foundation of the Republic and the Sunriders, my family has been apart of it. I will teach you but conduct yourself as a jedi if you wish to learn."

"So how to go around helping others? There are so many ways to go around doing that, but proper training is necessary for nearly all of them. That said, under the proper circumstances, a five-star hotel can be used to help people if done properly"

Varindar was under no illusion that she could actually learn anything more advanced than telekinesis at this point. But there is direct helping and indirect helping. With the hotel I'm engaging in indirect helping. My hotel's recovery is still fragile, but I could be building, in the long run, an oasis of integrity and transparency in a desert of scum and villainy, just that I have to deliver on the integrity and transparency parts. Yet, just because I deliver on the integrity and transparency parts, doesn't a Jedi make. Running a hotel, even a five-star one, will test a person's patience and nerves, especially if you have ungrateful guests, she thought. It was obvious that she was irked, but she tried her hardest not to let that show, and [member="Morse Sunrider"] seemed to be dancing around the pot. Perhaps there was a lesson to be gained by an instructor that dances around the pot, but it might not be obvious at first glance, no matter its value or where it fits in Jedi-hood. Unsettling that it was for Varindar, Varindar may as well be an exotic kind of padawan for Morse.

[member="Varindar Asyt"]

She looked at her as she spoke and spoke. "How? How does a five star hotel help someone? This rating is higher yes? it indicates opulence, it indicates credits, wealth and time. These people are going on vacation. They are more then likely not in need." She remained there before walking forward and looking at her. "A jedi's first duty is to seve the people, all people not just the ones who can pay for your services. We protect the weak and oppressed often from the rich who would seek to exploit them for their own benefits, you don't seem to be using this as a means to incarcerating criminals who show up here. From all that you have said the proceeds don't seem to do anything worthwhile except go to you or your staff."

"The hotel is officially the property of the Order. The Order does whatever it can with the profits, but, in an emergency, I may as well be using the hotel to host refugees, sick and other people in need, provided the Order asks me to use the hotel in this capacity. In fact, the hotel was seized from criminals that used the hotel to launder money and hold slaves in escrow, the Ta'jar Blood Gang, and the Order is using the profits from its businesses to serve the people. So, while it may seem to be a little hypocritical, you could say that the hotel amounts to stealing from the rich in a sense. The Order is helping out the people all right, but doing so comes at a cost; it's just the financial model of the Order that is different here compared to other Jedi orders, past or present"

Why would [member="Morse Sunrider"] think Varindar owns the hotel in the first place? She expected different things from Morse, and, if a boutique, five-star hotel, was a hazardous business for the Order to run, then the Silver Engineering Corporation was even worse to Morse's eyes. The Order, running a shipyard? These businesses may as well be state-owned, but it was obvious just how far apart they were in where the hotel fit Jedi-hood, and Morse didn't seem to know just how the hotel landed in the Order's hands, nor its history. This isn't going anywhere, I'm not sure about when the Force-lessons will actually take place, so I don't feel so great about Morse. Even then I have to make sure I don't come across as arrogant, and it's not just about my relationship to the guests of the Crown Nebula, she thought, while expecting to be lifting pebbles with the Force, or some similarly-sized item. But perhaps if she cut the discussions of whether or not her position of running the hotel on behalf of the Order will she actually get to the lessons she wanted, maybe two or three Force-powers.

"Jedi have a collective responsibility, more than simply an individual one. The hotel's entire staff is made up of refugees from warzones that lost their livelihoods at war. To the extent I would attempt to market the hotel as a refuge of integrity and transparency in the jungle of scum and villainy that is Trandosha, I actually have to be honest and transparent for that to work, and also it would be important to Jedi even if I wasn't running a business. However, perhaps I feel this is going nowhere, and I apologize if this is going off the rails"

She raised an eyebrow again and turned on her heel. "Lets just begin the lesson, enter a ready stance and prepare yourself." She said it turning around and removed from her pack three of the training stones with a look on her face. "First step is to gauge where you are in your training, based on this Imagine it is very far behind for your age. By now you should have been either a knight or even with a master who could leave you to take your own missions. Instead you seem to have squandered your talents." Morse remained there and started to levitate ion her hand the training stones with her vision narrowinfg and she was focusing on the padawan herself.

Squandered my talents? More like I never had the opportunity to develop them: I was doing housekeeping with the Howling Crags and then the Ta'jars saw fit to use me for front-desk kind of stuff. Now, the day I will actually be able to train other Jedi, I will probably take care of my padawan the way I would take care of my hotel's guests, she thought, while the three training stones were being brought out of the pouch by [member="Morse Sunrider"]. Now that the training stones were in position, she would adopt a ready stance to get the telekinesis lesson started, and then clearing her mind of conscious, parasitic thoughts. Now it was time to reach out in the Force, and attempt to lift the smallest of the three practice stones without physically touching it. It got the first stone up about a feet, and then her hold on the stone is slipping away. It was a whole new world to her, but she wondered where her room for improvement would be. What she needs to work on. However, she knew that she could use various hotel items to practice telekinesis, either with the guests or without them.

[member="Varindar Asyt"]

Looking at her she could sense she had some thoughts.. a retort perhaps but thankfully she didn't say anything with Morse standing there. She looked at the stone rising and snatched it as she spoke. "I didn't say to start, I said get ready padawan." She stood there when she was looking at a few things and held the stone in her hand. "NOw I am going to pass these to you, you are going to catch them and send them back. Not deflect and make it random, you are reaching out to properly send it to my hand. THis will teach you control and focus while showing how much stamina you have." She was looking over at it and she flicked one stone up with her hand before sending it

The first stone sent by [member="Morse Sunrider"] her way was faster than her previous attempt at telekinesis. So she focused on slowing down the stone, with her hand positioned as if to catch a stone without the Force. And it happened that she had more focus than last time; she was thus able to stop the stone a few centimeters from her fingertips, and her arm recoiling somewhat from the attempt at using telekinesis with the stone. But catching the stone was the easy part: with forward movement of that arm she thrusts the stone in the direction of Morse's hand. Slowly but surely, she could feel her mind heating up as the stone was kept on the move by telekinesis, at slow speed, towards Morse's hand. Much, much better than last time. And yet, the stone slowed down to a crawl and then a snail's pace while the stone was on the homestretch towards Morse's hand. She had to be mindful of the Force-batteries and of the mental fortitude simultaneously as the stone was slowing down, finally landing in Morse's hand. Phew, I might have smarts all right, just that I had no idea what sort of mental stamina I have, but mental stamina is distinct from one's Force-energy pool, she thought.

[member="Varindar Asyt"]

She was looking at it and allowing her mind to reach out, increasing her sphere of influence to feel all of it. She wanted to be able to feel the force around here and get an idea of how much this one could use the force and... it was not good. For her age she should have been a lot further along the path, most of the padawans she had seen, had grown up with were skilled. You learned with your age group to get stronger and stronger within the force itself. She was trying to understand about it, how best to teach this padawan. "YOu show less skill then I would like. Your stamina and capability is something that needs to be worked on, more then that it shows what your distractions have done. You should have been raised and taught this since you were little."

[member="Morse Sunrider"] definitely seemed to be a traditionalist, Clone Wars-era Jedi, but she knew several people became Jedi later in life, like her. While, of course, she suspected that First Order-era Jedi were trained later in life out of necessity, some trade-offs needed to be made. It's obvious I still have work to do, I still have a long way before I can actually become a Jedi. There is more to Jedi-hood than just using the light side of the Force and a lightsaber; it is obvious that Morse is struggling to teach latecomer Jedi, she thought, while realizing just how negligent the Howling Crags were with her. But she still had the energy for a few additional attempts: it's just her skill that is a little lacking. She heard rumors that some of those Jedi, while functional in battle situations, were not nearly as functional in others. Highly specialized, perhaps overly so. She would just love to discuss the topic with somebody that could actually have an understanding of the implications of both methods. Maybe even with a guest or staffer if she had the chance. But, for the time being, she had to do something to improve her skill in telekinesis, which is still very raw.

"Perhaps another... rep could be in order here"

[member="Varindar Asyt"]

Morse was looking at her and she gave a nod of her head. "Very well." She remained there watching the girl and reached otu with the force. Probing and moving the stones up. They were made for training purposes and she wasn't one to put aside the situation. So the more she raised them the slower she moved them back over towards the padawan. To give her a chance to work on and try to guide them back over. "Take your time, clear your mind of distraction and focus the force into your hands. The extend them outwards, invisible hands gripping the stones to guide them. The training will take time but eventually we will be able to build up your ability."
