His hand froze in place as an invisible vice clamped around his arm. Fingers shook and his arm lightly wove around, like a magnet being repelled by another magnet of equal strength. The sound of Stephanie’s call echoed in Cassius’s mind, but it was almost as if he didn’t hear it, or rather, didn’t care to. He was so close… so… close…
Zora had heard the sudden shout from their friend, however, and with the darkness combined, she tripped. The holocron went with her, and in a flash, Cassius came out of whatever spell he was under. Like being suddenly pulled from the water, he was still wet, in a sense – the effect wasn’t instantaneous, but it certainly had less hold on him now than it did before.
Now, his focus was on Zora. As Sky’ito went to her side, Cassius knelt on the opposite side, grabbing her hand. She was awake, which was good – the chance for brain trauma went up considerably if consciousness was lost. He tried to reach out with the Force to scan her for any serious injuries, but found that with the swirling emotions, the lingering effects of the trance, and his own dwindling connection to the Force, he found it difficult.
More people came into the chamber, and Cassius could feel the presence from the holocron extinguish like a blown-out flame… or had merely hidden itself. The other man with them – Mandalorian, by his accent – picked up the ancient repository of knowledge. Cassius didn’t know this man, so therefore, he didn’t trust him, but perhaps he was the best among them to hold the device at the moment. So far, the only two people that had touched it were non-Force sensitives. Who knows what would have happened if Cassius had actually gotten his hands on it?
He briefly looked to the pedestal, listened to the chamber around them – there didn’t seem to be any adverse effect to removing the holocron. That being said, it probably wanted to be taken.
“We have to get out of here,” Cassius breathed out, reaching to his belt with his free hand and grabbing his commlink. Raising it to his lips, he spoke, “Tee-Four? Tee-Four, spool up the engines. We’re leaving soon.” All he was met with was intermittent bursts of static, so the message probably didn’t go through. Regardless, the time to leave was now.
Looking down to Zora, he asked, “Can you walk?” He wasn’t above carrying her out of here. Anyone could hear the almost desperate panic in his voice. The fact that he had walked so close to the line, and had to be yanked back from it had certainly rattled him. Fear was still radiating off of him like a heating coil.
