Staff Critique Thread: June 2013

YOUR AVATAR

  • You must choose an avatar for your character before beginning to role-play.
  • Choosing the same avatar as another writer is discouraged, but we do not limit avatar selection here at SWRP: Chaos. Choose whoever you want!

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and allow some leeway, but if it's blank long enough for me to see it multiple times, I'm going to get creative. ;)

I was thinking about something, and hear me out here. This isn't a critique more than a suggestion. Possibly slightly vague.

The way I see this site is that it's now its own entity. Self-sufficient, not built on another legacy. Entirely own system, and that's great. But what happens when a new member who finds this site through Google comes across and sees all these references to 'the site that must not be named'? It sounds a little unprofessional and it's encouraged by a lot of people. I dunno. I feel that, over time, something should be done about that. I understand a lot of the wounds are fresh and this whole thing has to heal the way it is. That's cool, don't get me wrong. But I dunno. Is that a consideration that should be taken into account in the future perhaps?

Thank you for your suggestion, Allaina.

This seems to be a board-wide suggestion, as I know that Tef and I have limited the amount of references to the Gungan Council that we personally make.

If there are references to the Gungan Council and other sites in our rules, please point them out. It is not our intention to do so.

If members feel like talking about the Gungan Council and other boards, then this is no issue provided that the discussion is civil and not disruptive. Staff also cannot circumnavigate mentioning the Gungan Council due to transfers from the board, yet I understand that if staff mention it too often it may seem unprofessional.

I try to understand this point, and to some degree, I do. But a lot of people here dwell too much on the past.

We as Staff, as Apparatus just pointed out, serve only this community and no other.

The part I bolded, what if me and MAD share the same armor, but otherwise no other things being the same?

Then you'd share the same armor and nothing else would be the same. Avatar's are usually faces, so I don't think this matters a ton. ;)

Yes service us... i mean serve us.

I can honestly say the staff here has been fairly awesome and well fair. I havnt seen them making obvious clicks of people they like more or are more likely to support and seem like they try to be as neutral as possible. Which i find completely awesome, and most of them i have respected for a long, long time on the other side of the...... awesom-o-meter. But i understand what is being said and why you guys do as such, a slight bit of unproffesianalism compared to an effectient and effective community that has none of the animosity of other sites towards each other. The wounds will heal over time, and it will be nothing more then a laugh in the future when we look back but for now i think its best to keep it as obscure as possible to prevent the inevitable comparisons and bickering that sometimes emerge when people are used to one way and go to a new way.

A suggestionish not sure if this is the right place.

Ive noticed the blog area has a semi-news dealio, how about letting a few writers who want to have a place to do daily news reports, interviews with factions, battle fiel;d reports etc? Maybe you guys already got that going but just a thought.

Fun fact, that is not run by staff but by one of our members who has taken the initiative to do that himself. And you can make blog posts if you want as well. You have the freedom to jump in and get involved in doing that if you so please :)

Only negative thing I think I've had to say about anybody here so far:

Being informed twice of something you didn't know/forgot about is extremely irritating, akin to the scenes in Office Space where the main character is told to follow the same memo about fifteen times. A judge told me not to post in the tech thread once in said thread. Rightio. Good job, I was wrong. I didn't post in the thread again but later received a pm about it from a separate judge saying exactly what the other judge informed me of. It being clearly in the thread and the fact that I didn't post again should have been affirmation enough that I understood the information being given to me and did not need anyone else to tell me twice.

Besides that I don't really have any complaints, though I can see were some might get angry on how "harsh" some of the staff seem to be. Doesn't bother me, just an observation.

YOU PEOPLE ARE AWESOME, keep up the good work and volunteering your time to give us a star wars galaxy to enjoy and rp in.

The most important step is always the next one
So I have one question/suggestion/complaint.

I understand that the period of time this board finds itself in is chaotic and that multiple factions are vying for power. I get that, but logically...This galaxy map with all these influence bubbles is just crazy. There are certain Factions that are great ideas...as Minor factions, but what happens if they grow and grow and become a dominant faction in the universe.(Note: The following is not trying to point fingers at specific factions but trying to make a point at the ridiculous situation the galaxy would be in under the following circumstances aka this is all hypothetical)
Cannon Factions that matter; and those that are unique.
Imagine, the Dathomiri Witches. They have their blop on the map and their sphere of influence. Now, following the rules they obtained enough unique writers to gain Major Faction Status and begin Dominions. How? How are they getting to other worlds and taking over worlds with technology far more advanced than them. I mean no offense to them because this is obviously a character trait, but have you seen them speak? I mean, for battle they ride in on Ranchors. They use beasts of burden where the next planet over they have swoops, starships, planetary defenses and trained militias or soldiers. But if they make 100 posts on said planet with some sort of opposition they get the planet and spread their matriarchal ways. It makes sense OOC and rules wise, but IC? Story wise? Cannonly? (our cannon) Besides the entire planet of Dathomir isn't ruled by the Witches and tribes! How would it make sense to have a world taken under the Witches of Dathomir with their capitol being Dathomir. I imagine that the people that live on Dathomir would be rather confused why they were receiving thousands of credits and support.
Next example: Cooperation based factions
Okay a cooperation based faction, maybe a starship producer or private military company, regardless. They get major faction status and start taking over worlds violently and peacefully etc. and they become a dominant force in the galaxy. Again, makes sense rules wise and OOC, but why? Why would a corporation take over multiple planets when realistically, said corporations would be living within a government and selling their services out. Why do they need their own system, their own government?

My suggestions:
1/2 allow multiple factions, they are fun. But after a certain amount of time with this board alive and after a few solid events pitter it out and have your few major factions and have a plethora of minor factions. Minor factions make the universe spin. They are your crime syndicates, large corporations, mercenary groups even political parties can make great minor factions. They make the wheels turn and they ultimately push the galaxy along with their moles and grubby fingers in the major factions, telling them where they want to go. Honestly, the stories that matters most are the little guys' as they show and determine how the big guy is growing or withering and ultimatley define the world (or galaxy) we live in. Minor factions would keep their planet of origination and maybe have bases on other worlds, keeping their religions, political views, practices, ethics, cultures etc. but act as citizens to whatever faction "rules" over them.
2/2 Since everyone and their mother eventually becomes a major faction or stops being active just have one lable, faction and keep the map the way you've been doing it. It doesn't seem like there is a point in the two (major and minor) even being there if they all with a few members can be the same thing and have the same benefits.

Likely wasn't communicated between the two role-play judges that you had already been spoken with. While we try to avoid these scenarios, mistakes will be made. I apologize on behalf of those involved for irritating you, but I'm sure you can forgive us one tiny mistake. Just view it as... double-checking, haha.
