Intent: To provide a rapid-fire turbolaser
Development Thread: If necessary
Manufacturer: Ringovinda Systems
Model: Gatling rapid-fire turbolaser
Affiliation: Open market
Modularity: Can choose whether to have one, two or three tubes in a turret: each tube is worth 4 turbolasers
Production: Mass-Produced.
Material: Alusteel turret, turbolaser components,
ion accu-accelerator
Classification: Rapid-fire turbolaser
Size: Ship-Mounted
Length: 12 meters
Weight: 50 tons (single-tube turret; add 30 tons per tube in same turret)
Ammunition Type: Power reactor
Ammunition Capacity: Turbolaser standard
Effective Range: Turbolaser standard
Rate of Fire: 4x Turbolaser standard
Strengths:
- Common components with many turbolaser batteries (in maintenance terms, just more of the same for turbolaser users)
- Compatible with common turbolaser targeting computers
- High firing rate
Weaknesses:
- High power drain
- Effectiveness markedly decreases if fired from farther than half standard turbolaser range
Special Features: None
Description: The Gatling rapid-fire turbolaser drew its inspiration from the
KDD2055 short-range turbolaser, with modern-day turbolaser technology; with modern technology, one can now mount such rapid-fire implements in shipboard use, firing four times as fast as standard turbolaser. But such power comes at rather steep costs: it drains as much power as 4 standard turbolasers (it effectively fires four bolts with the same power as one standard turbolaser) and, while allowing faster rates, also comes with another shortcoming: because the plasma spends less time inside the barrel, the resulting plasma bolts are more unstable, causing the bolts to lose focus if fired from further than half a standard turbolaser range. Targeting solutions are similar to those use on standard turbolasers, making the transition from older turbolaser units to this one seamless for the gunners.
