I've said it a few times now: I've as much confidence in this as Disney seems to. Marketing should have started ages ago, but here it is, three months before release, and we're just now seeing trailers, posters, and what have you. Looks to me like they're trying to hedge their bets, that way if it flops, they have an excuse.
Does that mean it's going to be awful? Maybe, maybe not. Ron Howard is an excellent director, but there's only so much you can do to polish a turd, and they brought him in partway through a very troubled production cycle. The visuals look as polished as usual and I'm sure we'll see plenty of action, but the lead doesn't look or sound much like Ford, and Emilia Clarke isn't so much a good actress as one that's had years to adapt to an iconic role. Maybe they'll pull it off, but it's not confidence inspiring. Donald Glover absolutely looks the part of a young Lando, and we can all count on Woody Harrelson to be Woody Harrelson, so it's a bit of a mixed bag.
Maybe Solo will blow us all away by being the best Star Wars movie of all time, but at this point, I'd rather go in with low expectations and be pleasantly surprised rather than get my hopes up.
